The Gary Matthews Jr catch to me is in the top 3 all time. He took his eyes off the ball, had about half a second to track it, then caught it blind. Still makes my jaw drop.
this and Kevin Pillar's catch for Toronto in LF are my two favorite of all-time. Also, Austin Jackson catching the first out of the 9th inning of Gallaraga's perfect game on a dead sprint toward the CF wall still gives me chills
The Matthews catch is my vote for number one of all time. There are lots and lots of lots of choices (frankly I'm not even sure the Jim Edmonds one was HIS best, let alone one of THE best) but when I think of all the baseball I've ever watched, I always come back to this one. Also, Jackie Bradley Jr had one in extra innings against Baltimore that was equally ridiculous.
Jim Edmonds going full speed and completely laying out with his back facing home plate is the greatest catch of all time! Andruw Jones over the shoulder "Spiderman" catch is also top 10.
Agree on Edmonds full sprint over the shoulder straight back catch. I commented: "Wasnt even Edmonds or Griffey's greatest catches. What's amazing about #9 is that Devon White turned that great catch into a triple play in the World Series. It's too bad the ump missed it. Jays won their 1st championship despite bad officiating throughout
Otis Nixon being snubbed is a shame. The old Fulton county fence was like 12 feet and he caught that ball almost another 2 feet above the fence. It also had HUGE implications as it was in the midst of the race to the playoffs with the pirates that lead to the famous sid bream slide.
100% agree. One of the best catches I've ever seen live. Kept the long winning streak alive and was just so beautifully timed. I've never seen Otis's catch make a list, and you're right. It's a shame.
I saw the video of that catch and it doesn't look like the wall is 12 feet. Looks more like 10 feet. I paused it right when Nixon was against the wall and doesn't look like the wall is twice as high as Nixon's height. On of the greatest catches I've seen though.
Willie Mays was always my favorite growing up as a baseball loving child...he was a legend, sure, but he was also the nicest guy ever...easy to appreciate how he gave his all on the field. RIP...God bless his family! I am now watching the wonderful tribute to him in Alabama between the Cardinals and the Giants...great stadium where he played in the Negro League as a young man.
Willie Mays could beat opponents at every facet of the game except pitching. He could patiently get a base on balls, steal 2nd, go to third on a ground ball and score on a sacrifice fly. He could beat the rivals by hitting a home run. He could beat the adversaries with either a great catch or a great throw, sometimes both in the same play. He was a clutch hitter with runners in scoring position. He could beat the other team with his legs, his arm, his glove, or his bat. Great player and a decent man who endured a fair amount of racism.
I made a "Willie Mays" catch one time messing around with friends. A buddy was hitting fly balls to us. He really gets a hold of one and off the bat I was like, "shit...I'm not getting that one", but then I was like "screw it....give it a shot", just turn and ran full steam to where I thought it was headed. Put the glove out in front of me, heard a whistling sound near my ear and out of the corner of my eye I see the ball sail over my shoulder and perfectly into the glove....lol. Best catch I ever made...in a mean nothing moment....haha..
As a lefty playing RF, a ball was hit down the line by a right handed batter. It was hooking to the foul line away from me. I took off after it and didn't take my eye off the ball. I stretched out and made a diving backhand grab about 6 inches off the ground across the body. I bounced up and threw the guy out that was running from first to second as he took off not giving me a chance to catch it. The boys loved that one. There were a couple dive over the fence catches but those were on short fences. Tore my pants on one I had to leave the game. Love the game but hockey was a more engaging sport and there was no stop and go like in baseball and the physical aspect of the game appealed to me. I'm close to 70 now and enjoyed reminiscing.
Agreed. His best catch is even better than Willie's catch. I have Willie's catch as #2 because it was one of the first is in its kind and so iconic but Jim's catch has been the best I've ever seen to this day
Yeah. As a NYer the Chavez catch always comes to mind first. I thought the stage would be set for heroics in the bottom of the inning when Chavez came to bat, but... :(
To me the best part of Willie's catch isn't the jump he got, the route he took, or the catch itself. To be running like that and basically stop on a dime to throw it to the infield is just insane
Dwayne Wise definitely deserves to be on here. He robbed a home run and saved a Perfect Game for Mark Buerlhe. He almost dropped it after bobbling and eventually caught it with his bare hand. This dude came off the bench to pitch hit in the 8th and played center field in the top of the 9th. Under these circumstances, this is the greatest catch ever made.
In SD, I remember watching it live. The most underrated catch ever, I've never seen it on any of these "top catch" lists. Diving away from the plate, bare handed... the most difficult catch I've ever seen.

On August 1st, 2017, Austin Jackson of the Indians flipped over the right center field wall in Fenway Park to rob Hanley Ramirez of a homerun. He landed in the Red Sox bullpen. Red Sox fans gave him a standing ovation. That is more impressive than about 5 that you listed here.

Awesome play, & we couldn't even win that game. Boston Red Sox suck.
If Vic Wertz had been able to pull that ball the least bit, Mays wouldn't have had the room to run it down. Since straight-away center at the Polo Grounds was something like a mile and a half (sic), Willy was able to catch up to it and make that spectacualr catch.
It’s not true. Runners were on first and second, no one was on third. And he didn’t throw anyone out. Larry Doby ran on contact from second and had to return to tag up before reaching third.
Griffey Jr had so many incredible catches that should’ve made the list over the one that did. Dewayne Wise’s catch that preserved Mark Buehrle’s perfect game should be here too. The greatest catch ever not shown.....Jim Edmonds running and diving straight away from home plate. It was like Willy May's catch if Willy had to dive for it. Shown on ESPN as the greatest catch ever.
Yeah, no. If Mays was going after Edmonds ball, he does not have to dive. If Edmonds is going after Mays' ball, he does not even come close to it and it is a triple.
You missed Edmonds straight away dive back to the batter. And you missed Andruw Jones over the head basket catch while climbing the wall. 2 best catches I’ve ever seen, and none of these 10 match up.
You left out Ron Swaboda’s miraculous backhanded diving catch for the Mets against the Orioles in the 1969 World Series. It is right up there with May’s catch off the Vic Wetrz fly ball. Search RUclips for it.
Gary Mathews Jr then Edmonds, Endy Chavez. Sousa was timely. Wise saving a no hitter as well. Jeter showed incredible focus. Mays was a great catch too. All these guys are terrific.
Number 9 and 8 were good but not top 10 good, edmonds had another catch besides the one they showed that was imo the best catch of all time. But man that gary Matthew's catch and the Souza catch were freaking great.
Sorry. David Wright was a terrific player, but as far as I'm concerned, there's one player from New York who deserves the title "The Captain", and he didn't play for the Mets.
That diving, bare handed catch in SD by The Captain is never on these lists, yet it's better than the overwhelming majority, by a wide margin. Instead, we get a routine, lazy fly ball in the middle of the ranking... 🤔
Not sure how you can have a top ten and the only Griffey is the catch in front of his dad? How about the one where he fly into the wall and broke his wrist? Or the home runs he robbed? Plus trout had a monster few as well.
All of these lose to the catch Otis Nixon made on Andy Van Slyke in Atlanta, preserving a 13-game winning streak for the Atlanta Braves. Otis Nixon had to catch the ball over the wall in Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. The wall was around 11 to 12 feet high. Imagine if basketball players had to dunk on a 12-foot high basketball goal. The fans gave Otis Nixon one of the greatest standing ovations ever! You need to check that one out! All of these catches pale in comparison to Otis Nixon's catch!
I remember that catch by Endy Chavez! Unbelievable!! I really the tide turned n Mets would win that game. Fred Lynn made some Unbelievable catches in his career n one in the 75 WS.
Yes - unbelievable catch - running full tilt- diving catch - held on to the ball despite hitting the warning track laid out. “And he………MAKES THE CATCH! “, Kuiper.
Thank's for showing the Gruber replay. It was a triple play. Shame the ump missed that call. If I recall, it would have been the first triple play in WS history? Anyway....White's catch was amazing.
Game 7 of the 1955 Series: Sandy Amoros' catch is one of the finest ever. Same as Endy Chavez on this list, if Amoros had been a right-handed outfielder, zero chance he would have made that play.
The Jeter catch is so overrated. Uribe's catch in the 9th inning of the clinching game of the 2005 world series is a significantly better play but everyone just seems to forget that team. Oh and Wise to save Buehrle's perfecto? Guess people aren't fans of the Sox when there's a Yankee to throw in the mix.
Before I watch this video Jim Edmonds HAS to be in this clip. I'll update my post after the video... Ok so there was an Edmonds catch in the video. However that is not his best catch. The dive straight back, full lay out, was his best catch. Anyone who has played outfield knows that is a really tough catch
Andrew Jones should be on this list. Same with Darin Erstad robbing Posada of a game winning hit. Ichiro’s best catch isn’t on here. Griffey obviously had better catches than the one shown.
No Dwayne Wise saving Mark Buerhle's 2008 perfect game? Or Juan Uribe's dive into the seats against Houston for the next to last out in the 2005 World Series?
Kirby Pucketts 1991 Game 6 World Series catch to prevent the Atlanta Braves from extra bases, should have been on this list or everyone's top 10 list of this type of category, compared to a couple of others that's aren't even a top 20 in mt opinion, because without that catch hw doesn't hit the game 6 game winning home run and the Braves would have been 1991 World Series Champions beating the Twins 4-2 instead of Minnesota winning it 4-3. And we never get the great phrase "We'll see you tomorrow night."
@@cygnusx-3217 I believe it was the next to last out of the 2005 World Series. Jeter's was in June or July. It's such an obviously absurd comparison that I really don't even know what else to say. 🤷

Great stuff to be sure, but you should see the catch Fred Lynn made in right field that used to be on the introduction to wide world of sports (something like it) in the 1970's. Yeah, no. If Mays was going after Edmonds ball, he does not have to dive. If Edmonds is going after Mays' ball, he does not even come close to it and it is a triple.
@@bauerj3398😂 false
@@gregcook1060 is this you pretending that Edmonds had anywhere near the range of Mays?
To be fair, ESPN is awful
Edmonds all day long with the Angels. Absolutely ridiculous
Great video! I like the replays of each catch. 🍻
Bo Jackson running on the fence.
Edmonda has at least 4, that should be on this list.
A whole list and no Kenny Lofton climbing the wall like spiderman? Smh...
Gary Mathews Jr then Edmonds, Endy Chavez. Sousa was timely. Wise saving a no hitter as well. Jeter showed incredible focus. Mays was a great catch too. All these guys are terrific.
Ron Swoboda in the '69 Series
Otis Nixon's catch robbing Andy Van Slyke was the best I've ever seen and surely some of Andruw Jones catches should've been on here!
Number 9 and 8 were good but not top 10 good, edmonds had another catch besides the one they showed that was imo the best catch of all time. But man that gary Matthew's catch and the Souza catch were freaking great.
this is a weird list tbh but I like that you picked some catches I haven't seen in a while
Where is Kirby Puckett's catch from game 6 of the 1991 World Series. That is better than most on this list. Please update to include that catch.
David Wright had a catch deserving of this list. All these are worthy, just sad the Captain isn’t in here.
Better title: "Some really cool catches I cherry-picked, along with a goofy one by Ken Griffey Jr." Top 10 in the history of MLB? Not even close.
i love that edmonds’ catch happens damn near every game in the show 😂
Not sure how you can have a top ten and the only Griffey is the catch in front of his dad? How about the one where he fly into the wall and broke his wrist? Or the home runs he robbed? Plus trout had a monster few as well.
Don’t forget Duane Wise coming off the bench in the ninth to save Mark Buehrles perfect game.
Torii Hunter robbing Barry Bonds in the 2002 All-Star Game.
Dewayne Wise making a leaping catch to save Mark Buehrle’s perfect game in the 9th inning.
I remember that one. He climbed the wall with his spikes and reached 2 feet over the wall to nab it. Unbelievable catch!
I remember that catch by Endy Chavez! Unbelievable!! I really the tide turned n Mets would win that game. Fred Lynn made some Unbelievable catches in his career n one in the 75 WS.
That wasn't even Edmunds best catch, the one he made with the Angels was the best catch I have ever seen.
Gregor Blanco saving Matt cains perfecto was something else also.
Where's Edmunds catch when he's running towards the center field wall and dives to make the catch ala Willy Mays
Game 7 of the 1955 Series: Sandy Amoros' catch is one of the finest ever. Same as Endy Chavez on this list, if Amoros had been a right-handed outfielder, zero chance he would have made that play.
Barring any context, it's gary Matthews Jr catch for me
And it's over 70 yrs later and Mays is still the King. Long Live the Legend.
Awsome video
The Jeter catch is so overrated. Uribe's catch in the 9th inning of the clinching game of the 2005 world series is a significantly better play but everyone just seems to forget that team.
Oh and Wise to save Buehrle's perfecto? Guess people aren't fans of the Sox when there's a Yankee to throw in the mix.
Kenny Lofton, sandy Alomar, Jim Edmonds with the Angels. There are quite a few I would put above some of these
As a New York Mets fan, in defeat, the Endy Chávez catch should be ranked higher instead of a Jim Edmonds or Ichiro catch
There are probably 500 catches that are just as amazing as some of these
As much as I hate the White Sox, Dewayne Wise made a catch at the wall in the 9th to give Mark Buehrle a perfect game. Just as good as Souza’s
Out of all the Griffey catches this one got picked. Surprised to not see Lofton, Trout , or Griffey Jr in the 10
Where is Jim Edmonds over the head catch??
Andrew Jones should be on this list. Same with Darin Erstad robbing Posada of a game winning hit. Ichiro’s best catch isn’t on here. Griffey obviously had better catches than the one shown.
I know there was that jim Edmonds catch but what the diver with his back facing home plate!!!!!!!!!!!! That was the greatest ever!!!!!
No Otis Nixon?
How about Tommie Agee's catches in the 1969 World Series?
No Dwayne Wise saving Mark Buerhle's 2008 perfect game? Or Juan Uribe's dive into the seats against Houston for the next to last out in the 2005 World Series?
Ok Your Missing one Of The most important Catches regarding the circumstances. Mark Buerhle’s Perfect Game Catch Caught By Dwayne Wise😊
Great catch.
Juan Uribe's catch diving into the stands was better than Jeter's, and it happened in the World Series!!
Agreed. Far better catch and far bigger game. But White Sox aren't allowed on the list.
@@cygnusx-3217 I believe it was the next to last out of the 2005 World Series. Jeter's was in June or July. It's such an obviously absurd comparison that I really don't even know what else to say. 🤷
@@FleaRHCP97 NY Yankees' bias.
That Jeter play was such a dagger. But even as a Sox fan it did make me like Jeter as a player. He was such a worthy enemy
You forgot Aaron Rowand face planting into the fence and Edmonds over the shoulder catch running away from home plate.
Should've used Jim Edmonds' "The Catch" from 1997 vs the Royals. To me *that's the second greatest catch behind Willie Mays.*
All great catches to be sure…but HARDLY the top 10 catches of all time. Some of these are absolutely on the list, but there are others that are more deserving of the title. IMO. 😉
Shoutout Travis Janokowski
Great stuff to be sure, but you should see the catch Fred Lynn made in right field that used to be on the introduction to wide world of sports (something like it) in the 1970's. He was laying on top of the fence and caught the ball 4 over it, scratched his side up some as well. Then there is the crazy stuff the Kevin Pillar did in Toronto for a few years. Pretty special.
I believe that was for the intro to This week in Baseball
Pillar was insane diving like that in a dome - that cement is not soft
@@GeoffC19 Yes, but its no longer the 1980's. The Toronto dome was using 'Field turf' and it gives a lot more like grass. Years ago it was just a thin carpet and that must have been tough
@@henrivanbemmel fair enough, thought it was still being used - 80's ruined a lot of outfielders knees with that turf
@@GeoffC19 Yup. I was at an indoor athletic venue (The Hangar') that had bought the dome turf used before Pillar's turf. Pretty amazing stuff
Otis Nixon against the Pirates
that bare hand catch was insane
These are all good catches, but ridiculous click bait title. Among countless others, check Yastrzemski’s 1967 catch in the Billy Rohrs’ near no-hitter.
Where's the dude running through the outfield wall
Jim Edmonds has an even better catch if you can believe it.
Jim Edmonds with the all out over the shoulder catch was not included but I put that in top 5 along with two Griffey Jr. catches. Baseball is life!
Agreed! The Griffey catch where he broke his wrist on the wall and the home run robbery should’ve definitely been on here.
Number 9 should have been a triple play.
I know there are some awesome throws here, but I have seen Ichiro do this regularly from all points in the outfield over a very long career. So I'm going with him.
Yes Ichiro and Vlad Guerrero Sr. Would do this daily lol
Throws or catches? Cause this about catches. @@frankie3791
You are right about #1, Willie Mays did make the greatest catch in Baseball history.
The one Jim Edmonds catch on this list is only at best his 3rd best catch.
