Harold Reynolds was the winning run in extra innings. Then I saw something that made my jaw drop. Bo was on the frickin warning track when he launched that throw to home to nail Reynolds on the fly. Ankiel had one of the most underrated arms ever. That dude had a cannon! Considering he came in as a starting pitcher turned outfielder, he was a decent all-around player.
Those in the game knew his arm wasn't under rated. The sad part of Rick Ankiel's career is that he couldn't stay in the game long enough to show it off more. Had he been able to hit .225, he would have stayed in the game longer.
Let's examine the highpoints of Rick Ankiel's career. Yeah, he struck out 194 batters as a 20/21 year old in 2000. He struck out Barry Bonds 3 times in a game that year. And then, he later returned as a power-hitting outfielder. He hit 33 home runs in the calendar year following his callup as an outfielder in August '07. But he fell off pretty quickly as a hitter, with an OPS in 2009 that was lower than his OPS as a pitcher in 2000. Out of all that, I think people remember he was a pitcher, but I don't think everybody quite realizes how dominant he was for a brief time with hall of fame level stuff. And, I don't think people typically remember his all-around great 2008 season (hitting 25 homers as a full-time CF). But I would say that by the end of his career he made it onto the shortlist of the 4 or 5 best outfield arms in the eyes of most baseball fans. Rick Ankiel was the quintessential "highlight reel player." And he had to be a pretty damn good athlete to do it. I mean, Ohtani can pitch and hit. But he doesn't play a plus-plus centerfield defense. Ankiel pretty much did a little of everything in his career.
Down by 3 runs leading off the 8th inning, and you get thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double? Yeah, that's a mistake. Your team needs baserunners at that point, and you can't risk making an out on the basepaths when you've only got six outs to work with.
It’s not common, but not rare, either. With a slow runner and a hard hit ball to right field, someone with a decent arm has a good shot at pulling that off.
Andre Dawson in his heyday playing right field would gun dudes out at first pretty often. Sometimes you just have to respect the fact some of these dudes have absolute freakish throwing arms.
@@kendallevans4079 Really? Pulling the race card? That entire inning was so emotional that it's amazing he didn't fling that bat into the Rangers' dugout. As it turns out, it only went about five feet. And I've seen several white American players flip their bats.
As a young boy, I was fortunate to see Roberto Clemente play before his unfortunate demise at sea. He was truly special. In addition to that missile he had for an arm, he was smart.
