Tom Finney described this as the performance of the century and while its over 25-years no now, I wont forget it. Steve Sutton was arguably man of the match. Forest had a very good side at the time and as said they didnt play bad, but Liverpool played supreme football that evening as they had been doing all season filled with home grown players. A great side denied true greatness by a European ban. I think this is one of the greatest league teams I have seen. They really were a team.
This is the team that made me fall in love with English football, and particularly Liverpool. I loved their passing esp in the box, John Barnes my favourite, and appreciated that fact that they played cleanly as well.
Have to say, as a Forest fan, I remember watching that on TV at the time. I still think it was one of the best team performances I have seen. Forest were a top team and couldn't live with Liverpool that night.
I was lucky to be on the Kop that night with my dad. A magical time that should've led to a second 'double' in two years. Probably the most exciting team to watch at that time
started supporting Liverpool this season through Barnes who deserves the player of the year award he went on to pick up this season. ....still the best ever Liverpool side I've ever watched, was almost Brazil like the football Liverpool produced especially in this game
This performance against Notts Forest, who where 2nd in the table, was the cherry on the cake of a LFC dominance that had lasted 15 yrs.. With the nadir of Hillsborough a year later .. LFC, the institution, where never to be the same again. What a performance by a great group of british players.. LFC look like they could be building a new dawn.. but this team are a global team and LFC are a global brand owned by those around the world! It doesnt mean much to me .. but 1988 that team was for the fans and most came from about 1/2 hr or closer.. I was a proud supporter..
Class personified..... Team telepathy, commitment for the cause and desire in perfect harmony. If it wasn't for Sutton and some wayward finishing it could have been 10
I remember watching this as a 12 year old kid and it is still the most perfect team performance I have ever seen from an English side. Yes, I am biased but it really is quite sensational. Y.N.W.A.
Now that was a boss scouse team, the most scintillating football I've seen played by that team in 87/88, like Brazil 82/86 at their best. The front six were interchangeably amazing in quality work rate and invention. Steve McMahon, what a fucking player he was. Arsenal in 88, he made that game his own. What makes this result all the more impressive is that this Cloughie line up is actually a superb Forest team, good contenders from 85-91 as I recall. John Barnes had his best season here....
Remember going to this game and to Wembley a few days later when everyone expected the reds to do exactly the same to Wimbledon as we did to Forest. That is why i never take any team for granted, "it's a funny old game."
What utter bollocks. It's impossible to say how teams from different eras would perform against each other. What I do know is that tactically, this Liverpool side were streets ahead of most others in the OldFirst Division, and it's a shame they couldn't compete in Europe. Barnes and Beardsley were, what you'd call today, 'technically' brilliant. And this comes from a United fan who had to suffer Liverpool's dominance, and begrudgingly admire it.
I remember being there on the night, and just wanted John Barnes to always have the ball, he was brilliant that season. Not one foreign player on the pitch in either side then
I see people saying these players couldn't cope with the game today because of the physical demands. If these players where at the same level of fitness and conditioning of today. They would win it all it's all about technique, touch and ability on the ball. The reason I fell in love with football these players and especially the front three of Aldridge, Barnes and Beardsley amazing.
I remember someone said after this game, Liverpool played like prime Brazil national team from 1970s. Everything was too simple for Liverpool that night
How good were we then ? I remember us getting Barnes and Beardsley so clearly and this game was so good , even Sir Tom Finney said it was the best football he,d ever seen . Enough said really YNWA

But why would you think that this Liverpool side, with all the football of the 30 years following them, wouldn't be playing football like them. Football progression and development is about ripping off other ideas and adapting them for your own. Your denying this side that option. In the late 80s there is only one side better than this Liverpool team and that's the AC Milan side, and in 87-88 they are still a couple of seasons away from hitting their stride. That AC Milan side are still considered one of the very strongest to ever play in Europe and Liverpool would have certainly been a match for them. Unlike other European competitions, Spain and Germany especially, the English league and cup double was, before the Premier League era, very, very rare. Liverpool had 4 cracks at it in 5 seasons, with Barnes and Beardsley taking this side close 3 seasons in a row. That was a fantastic team. Like Sword said, a very good Forest team completely undone.
Nice to hear a TF reference, he was my Dads favourite, as mentioned in other comments this was a great team, Beardsley though, what a player.

Man of the match - Steve Sutton. It would have been 10 without him in goal. Beardsley was unplayable.
