Hey Filthy! I know you'll probably never see this but you made my quarantine liveable. I'm sure people will see this comment a long time from now and be reminded. I found your channel at just the right time and I have genuinely watched countless hours, (Like most people would watch TV) for months and months. I've improved my game, and set up a server with friends and acquaintances found this game and plan to watch because I upgraded my warrior to a ram with a ruin and took out my friend on turn 13. I have literally never laughed harder but as the game has progressed I realised I did not know how to effectively capitalise on it. Come here to learn from the master! Thank you for making my year so far Filthy!
Funnily enough, same here. Hadn't played civ in a long time, and while i mostly play single player (because my friend group's schedules never match up to play a full game), I started playing a bunch more during quarantine and his videos have helped immensely in things i never knew about the game. The highest diff i was ever able to beat the game on was Emperor (6), but after watching his tips and stuff I've finally beaten the game on deity (8). So many small min/max things that i never took into account
I found his channel during quarantine as well, these videos are a godsend. I've learned so much from Filthy, I can attribute getting a great prophet on turn 10 to him teaching me the ways of faith! :D
Actually bought the DLC 2 days ago, makes it somewhat better but compared to civ5 it's still a bit shallow. But i do like the game, always nice to leave earth on civ 5 and continue in beyond earth :) For sure not worth the asking price so better look out for sales.
Watching this game much later, I noticed that Geneva's population was outstripping Atilla's Court. City-states usually grow so slow that I thought something had to be up.
It's funny when things like that happen. I was allied with a city state that wanted me to connect aluminum to my trade network and they had it in their borders... they got the tech, explored it and gave it to me. That counted as connecting and I gained influence.
In retrospect there was a chance that Antwerp would naturally expand to cotton luxury resources but for it to happen you should have bought a plain tile on opposite site of river from horses. This is based on your guide about border growth.
the only person who i can compare to you is EthosLab. most def not cause of personality but because it's the two channels I've consistently watched ever since a kid until now.
Filthyrobot has made a civ 5 tier list for civilizations, that is a good place to start. Though if you play against AI the list isn't quite as valid, though still really, really good.
Definitely worth watching Filthy's tier list. The strong civs have bonuses that are either very powerful, or very consistent - and ideally both. Good bonuses are things that give you more science, growth (food/happiness), or production; or they have units that are very strong and give them a definitive advantage at the appropriate time in the game. Russia is quite good in multiplayer (and to a lesser extent, single player) because of the extra production they get from strategic resources. In the early game when your cities are maybe working 3-5 tiles and some of that is food, extra production is a solid bonus, It helps you get stuff done faster and build wonders and so on. Maybe you use that advantage to rush a wonder and beat someone else to it. Maybe you use it to ram more military units down an opponent's throat and crush them. The doubled quantity of resources can be impactful too. Egypt is strong because their unique War Chariot is a chariot archer (you see the unit Cole tried to attack with) without the usual restriction on quantity for needing horses. Their burial tomb is added happiness on a building you're likely to build anyway (and no upkeep, therefore you have more gold). Finally the wonder-building bonus means you can crush others out of having important wonders and have more time in your build order. A 6-turn wonder for others is a 5-turn for Egypt and that means you get it, and have another turn free to build stuff. Another couple strong civ examples: The Aztecs (not in this particular game) can use the Floating Gardens to produce tons of food, therefore growing their cities bigger and faster. This translates to more science, production, and everything else good that comes from citizens, making them a strong later-game civ. Last example - England: they're terrifying because they get powerful upgrades to strong units that already decide wars. Crossbows are very strong, probably THE unit that people attack with most and early, and England's are just better and preserve a good advantage when upgraded. Meanwhile, Frigate wars are already scary (you'll hear Filthy thinking about them in the Ancient era, simply because being on the bad end of a frigate attack is game over) and England's frigates are nightmares - substantially stronger than everyone else. If England is in the game, you DO NOT want to fight them on the ocean, ever. Their Ships of the Line will just ruin you. As to weak civs, they get bonuses that are just inconsequential or improbable. Polynesia gets an upgrade to the Warrior that basically doesn't matter, a tile improvement that is very hard to use or take advantage of in any way, and a bonus to embarking that doesn't do anything on these Pangea maps. Japan gets a small bonus to culture off Fishing Boats that depends hard on actually getting a lot of sea resources, and still doesn't apply to many tiles - and then a Swordsman replacement (a unit that's not around very long at all) and a Fighter replacement that often doesn't show up in games because you just don't build many Fighters and it's not stronger. The 'bad' civs still have access to all the usual buildings and units for the most part, but this game's a good example of a strong civ thriving. Filthy built ONE unit and basically captured Antwerp for free because the Battering Ram is so strong. Meanwhile he is just mildly annoyed Polynesia is attacking him when it happens and he scoffs at the 'you're vulnerable' comment from Cole because Horse Archers are a scary early unit and he knows that Cole is basically screwed in that attack.
All improvements apply immediately and some have significance that turn (roads, forts, happiness from lux, etc.). Other than that, it gives me a turn by turn double check on where my workers are and what they're doing. I do it more than strictly necessary as a habit.
Thia channel made my skills in civ 5 better. I have been looking for better tactics beyond great library rush for scientific dominance. But sadly I didn't have people to play it with 😢
Other civs can capture your worker and give it back to the city state for influence. Also, declaring war twice to the same city state will make new city states to refuse giving you gold upon meeting. Renaming is a way to keep track of these factors throughout the game. Hope this info helps.
City states grow wary if you declare war on more than 1 city state ever in a game. Pretty sure. I know for a fact that city states do not grow wary from tributing.
Hmm, I did test it recently and tributing doesn't make them wary. Dunno what I was referring to, it might have been me warring the city state to steal a worker multiple times when i was tributing them just before doing so.
that's why they're playing in the no-quitter group, where not quitting mid-game is rule number one. if someone still quits, they'll likely get kicked out. either way, the game will probably continue and the AI takes over instead
Thyreus123 if the forest is in your land you get more hammers (production) for clearing the trees. So filthy waited for the borders to expand over the forest tile to give him max hammers. You can see where the borders are gunna expand in the city menu.
It is "enhanced user interface", it is a modular mod available on the web (not on steam) if you are interested look it up and there is a guide for the instalation.
FilthyRobot Guess i ruined it x_x, On a side note thanks for the videos, i haven't caught your stream yet but i suck at this game and find i enjoy watching you play more then playing itself. Keep up the good work!
Techs in the same column in the tech tree cost the same as each other (95% of the time). Techs are slightly cheaper if somebody else you know has researched them, and hovering over techs in the tech tree tells you their current cost, so if it's lower than others in the column, somebody else has researched it.
@big difference between watching some videos about it and then actually playing it. Games can take up to several hours and if you are playing with humans you cant just leave
Civ doesnt take thousands of hours to get good at. After thousands of hours youre a god. After maybe 100-200 hours youre good and basically know everything. Took me 50 hours to learn the basics considering ive never played a rts game

I just found his channel after like 5 years of not playing the game very much.
Same.

It's fun enough for a few games. Then go back to a proper game

Geneva: Filthy, find us a new Natural Wonder!
Filthy: OK, nice lake you've got there by the way.
Geneva: Well Done!
Watching this game much later, I noticed that Geneva's population was outstripping Atilla's Court. City-states usually grow so slow that I thought something had to be up.
Natural wonder found for Geneva in their own borders... XD

Okay, where do I start learning Civ5 from scratch, like why are Egypt and Russia Tier1 civs and Japan and Polynesia are T2?

Hey Filthy, why do you reassign workers to the same tile improvement each round? Peace from 2021 ✌️
All improvements apply immediately and some have significance that turn (roads, forts, happiness from lux, etc.). Other than that, it gives me a turn by turn double check on where my workers are and what they're doing. I do it more than strictly necessary as a habit.
How did the scout at 56:20 move 4 times?
Altitude training promotion from Kilimanjaro natural wonder.

What game setting are you using? Seems like a lot of resources everywhere.
If you CIV, they WILL COME!!!
4:10 little did he know
A little late for this question but why does filthy re-name the workers he gets from city states?
Other civs can capture your worker and give it back to the city state for influence. Also, declaring war twice to the same city state will make new city states to refuse giving you gold upon meeting. Renaming is a way to keep track of these factors throughout the game. Hope this info helps.
xXAl3xGamingXx Thank you!!
I love how ppl are still watching
Hey filthy, why is it that you can tribute 2 times back after back and get no city state hate penalty, but when I do it i get city states grow wary?
City states grow wary if you declare war on more than 1 city state ever in a game. Pretty sure.
I know for a fact that city states do not grow wary from tributing.
Hmm, I did test it recently and tributing doesn't make them wary. Dunno what I was referring to, it might have been me warring the city state to steal a worker multiple times when i was tributing them just before doing so.
Why is it good to start next to a mountain?
Observatories.
Building that you can only build if you're next to a mountain, that increases city science by 50%..
Also a few wonder that require mountain's best of which machu picchu
In addition to the observatories that ppl mentioned, usually mountains provide some great defense that block enemies
I also really like neuswanstein wonder
I wonder if someone quit the game in the middle of the match, what will happen ?
that's why they're playing in the no-quitter group, where not quitting mid-game is rule number one. if someone still quits, they'll likely get kicked out. either way, the game will probably continue and the AI takes over instead
What if i lost my fingers?
Heheh.. going all teddy with that big stick diplomacy ;)
Why did filthy killed Antwerp, the city looks garbage
2 year late comment I know, but the quick answer is "map control" and to prevent its alliance with another civ.
What mods are you using here?
+Astrolonim Deimond You can't use mods in mulitplayer, but he is using enhanced ui if thats what u were asking
+lemons Yah thats what I meant. I understand how Civ V mods work. Sorry for the bad wording
It's possible to use mods in MP, they are using NQ actually(it works as a pseudo DLC).
how can you see, that someone has researched a tech on the tech tree ?
Cost. Tech cost goes down for each player that has researched it.
Yo Homeslice, can you explain the not wasting forest chopping until the city grows? Whats that all about
Thyreus123 if the forest is in your land you get more hammers (production) for clearing the trees. So filthy waited for the borders to expand over the forest tile to give him max hammers. You can see where the borders are gunna expand in the city menu.
oh the tradition free monuments don't apply to cities you capture?
Nope
Why does his interface look different?
Helix Ryn it's a interface mod that I cant remember the name of. I think there is a post about it on the nq reddit
It is "enhanced user interface", it is a modular mod available on the web (not on steam) if you are interested look it up and there is a guide for the instalation.

Back when rankings were a thing he was one of the better players iirc. Tbf I didn't pay much attention to Filthy back then as I mainly watched Arvius.
