Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order PS5/ Xbox Series X/ Series S - Next-Gen Patch Tested!

- Опубликовано: 13 янв 2021
- Wow, that came out of nowhere! Respawn Entertainment has updated Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order to tap into the extra horsepower of the Xbox Series X and S consoles, plus of course, PlayStation 5. It's 'back compat plus' as Rich calls it, so relatively limited compared to a native next-gen app - but here's how it looks and plays on all three systems.

Finally devs are targeting 60 fps no matter what resolution the consoles can get.
This is what we wanted
Nintendo out here at 540p 20 fps
Don't get to excited. This is exactly how the last generation started until devs decided to target 30 fps fidelity. The problem is developers wanna get the most visual bang for their buck and unfortunately, that means targeting a frame time of 33ms. It makes developing easier. I am confident this generation will be different BUT I am not holding my breath yet. Try not to get to hopeful cause Devs can change their minds pretty damn fast, especially once they start learning the hardware and start hitting walls.
I highly suspect this game is coded to run 60fps. I tried to lock 30fps on PC but screen tearing just won't go away, no matter what vsync options I choose.
I understand what you are saying but I think next gen consoles at 720p is unacceptable
@@madezra64 Ps4 launched with Killzone ie. 30 fps and then Game developers focused on delivery the optimised 30 fps experience. I barely remember any ps4 60 fps games with the exception of couple indie games.
Hoping this is the first of many next-gen patches
Rdr2 please!
Id love to see farcry 5
Same here man, I hope so too. It’s taking them long enough though so I wouldn’t be surprised if most developers don’t bother and/or scam console gamers by selling a separate “remastered” version.
Apex legends at 120fps is a must need update
@@mmm.3839 nah we need Respawn to make new games
I came to hear Richard say "bespoke" and I was not disappointed.

Lmao I love when he says that too
Crazy, i came for the "by and large" lol
I just started this on Series X, I never got the chance to check it out on the previous consoles or pre-patch so this was a real treat. Pretty awesome game so far.
Yeah its on gamepass its a really good game
Thanks to no EA stuff on the Game Pass PC yet (delayed on the day it was meant to launch and no update on when it's coming) I ended up playing it on my One S and it's a rough experience. It's super low res, textures don't load in and the frame rate is all over the place. It just ended up feeling sluggish as a result and lead to a frustrating experience. Add in all of the bugs that have still yet to be fixed and never will be. It's all well and good EA saying they're going to make single-player story driven games with no mtx but then barely support the game after launch despite it selling extremely well (second best selling game of 2020 behind Modern Warfare).
@@mrcraggle yeah but one s is really weak lol and star wars fallen order is really cool and they never sqid ea games will be dayone on gamepass lol only xbox studio games
@@mrcraggle all of that is mentioned in the video, it's why this video exists bro.
Yea. This really is a solid game. I was playing it on my one s and heard it was getting an update on the new console so I put it on ice. I'll finish it up now
I think those stutters, especially the cutscene stutters are likely more of a fundamental issue with the game as opposed to hardware.
Seems likely. I experienced them in the same places on PC, regardless of settings.
Agreed. But John Linnerman always says Xbox stutters are down to hardware. But if the stutter is on PS5 he says it’s “minor” and “is a bug”.
@@BrianWRobinette I can't remember to have any of those stutters but I played it on a really good colled pcie ssd.
Yup. Those stutters happen in the same place on PS5.
@@ThisBrownGeek He literally said that he's hesitant to make any kind of comparisons since they can't get a like for like scenario for benchmarking, so we shouldn't take it for granted. Then he says that the PS5 looks softer, an it's lacking the quality mode - obvious cons. Still, looking at the footage of the same locations I'd have to agree, that the stutters on the PS5 seem to be less pronounced.
I'd personally chalk it up to a slightly slower SSD, and dividing the RAM bandwith into 10 GB @ 560 GB/s
& 6 GB @ 336 GB/s on the Series X, and I'm afraid that it's going to stay like that. Every single game since launch has been loading 10-15% faster on the PS5, and has been experiencing less memory/loading related issues on the PS5, at least to my knowledge. To be fair though, these machines seem to be pretty evenly matched, and you can't go wrong either way.
It's funny and sad at the same time to hear John tip toeing so hard to avoid upsetting crazy fanboys.
Yeah... its a shame. I think i saw some tweet from this fall/winter from one of the DF guys mentioning how sad it is that their videos get weaponized the moment they release.
It's funny because they only tip-toe when there is a possibility on upsetting sony fanboys. They love to unleash hell on Microsoft consoles.

@@one_up907 Don't you mean the 1 or 2 people who are lucky enough to actually own a PS5 or Series X?
@@unpotat7672 Agree 100%. Watching this, and other, videos, it seems there is Playstation bias. When talking about the PS5 running at 1200p and the Series X running at 1512-2160p and then saying they're basically the same, I was like, "what??" And they even say it looks better, two modes, etc., but he picks out one thing they BOTH do, stutter/drop frames sometimes and says he thinks the PS5 does it a little less. And always trying to make excuses for the PS5, etc. Wow, biased much? lol I played this game on PC too, but it's painfully obvious that dude is a PS fanboy.
@@adamaj74 The narrative definitely doesn't seem to follow the data. That said overall we know there are times the PS5 does better in other games. Apparently its dev kit is really good and software wise its more efficient, I think this is a case where both are running the old code from last gen so that benefit is gone, hence the lead for the XSX.
It makes you wonder why they opted for a fixed resolution on PS5, as the fact it can do that means there would be situations where it can bump up the render resolution. Alas for whatever reason the XSX renders at a higher resolution @ 60fps and offers a 30fps option, can't think of too many reasons the advantage isn't really mentioned.
It feels more like old school prince of persia than dark souls honestly
ha. was just playing Prince of Persia (2008) and the wall running is very similar feeling. In fact, jumping out and force pulling a rope feels a lot like when you jump and get the assist from the Princess.
(still a fun game that looks great too... might have had to force VSYNC on in NVidia Control Panel but it works great now.. smoother than Jedi Fallen Order by far though there's obviously a lot less going on)
I was about 5 hours into my first time playing this, and then saw this patch, thank goodness, the 60fps on PS5 was nice, but was way too soft, this update helps it quite a bit.
Dude literally same. I was saying to my self “man It would be awesome if a patch came out.” And the next day it happened haha
Same man. Lovin the sharpness and smoothness of the update.
Is 1200p that big of a jump over 1080p?
@@leomariano2735 it wasnt really 1080p. It ran mostly at 800p even on the pro. And on the next gen, something was limiting the consoles from running at 1080p but the fps was 60fps. So from 800p to 1200p. Is still pretty good.
@@leomariano2735 depends on your monitor/tv size. ie. Playing a 720p vid on a phone is watchable but on a 65 inch is unbearable.

Those frame stutters and hitches remind me of Borderlands Handsome Collection.
That cutscene with Saw Gerrerra is bugged. I had to watch it on RUclips because the scene was completely unwatchable on my Xbox.

If this jump right here doesn't tell you what's bad about motion blur, then nothing will. I agree there are benefits, but there are also clear image quality issues as well, it's an aesthetic choice not without its tradeoffs.
Thats a visual effect thats part of the game, even if you turn it off some jumps have a blur effect.
@@Kuuki21
Right, there is a difference between full camera motion blur and per object motion blur. This is an example of per object motion blur being a little broken and distracting. On the whole I prefer per object to full camera. With both there are tradeoffs and conditions. John Linneman also praises the motion blur in Sunset Overdrive which I think looks great in the game's night time but horrible in its daytime, I love the way all of those post effects look at night in that game.
I've only started this since getting my SX, it is a fun game and already ran pretty nicely before this patch. Looks good now.

Motivation for a NG+ playthrough on PS5, goes from playing good to great, feels like the way it was meant to be played.
Curious, are you capturing your series X footage in HDR, then processing it afterwards? The color looks washed out compared to my own captures, which is what happens to mine when I upload them to RUclips without first correcting the HDR data manually.
I also noticed something else I never picked up on until watching this: The stutters in Kashyyk happen when it loads the sort of "gum tree" model. You can see it plain as day, it loads one right behind the imperial facility when Kal swings on the vine. My guess would be that the assets for some models are not well organized in game files, or are poorly optimized. Reminds me of when World of Warcraft redid the Elwynn tree models, because they were a huge hit when people flew into Stormwind.
@@RyanLeCocq dude you're right on the money. I never realized that until you mentioned it.
Honestly I feel like hdr on last gen consoles wasn’t all that great. Only last gen game that actually looks good with hdr on ps4 pro at least was days gone. But when I play demon souls or the new assassin creed game on ps5, the image quality is top notch I expect hdr this generation is actually gonna look nice cause I have hdr on the Star Wars game on ps5 but running the ps4 version of the game and it looks washed out, same it’s uncharted 4 and red dead
@@Ozzyozzysheesh I had a PS4 Pro that died, bought an Xbox One S, then recently upgraded to the Series X and that totally matches my experience. Both the PS4 Pro and One S had really overblown whites that made the whole scene look washed out with HDR on. The Series X and PS5 both seem to handle it properly and it's more comparable to watching HDR videos.
@@NarcanMedic One of my favorite things about DF videos. Their captures are so clear and the footage so well edited, that I often see new things even in games I've played a ton.

Damn you guys did this fast.
10:15 Seems that John is being very cautious with the way he worded that basically PS5 has less slowdowns than Series X. I think that the fanboys got to him. If either console performs better, there's no shame in pointing it out. Also, I think your work has had a positive impact on the performance and patching of games.
But why? Who would be worried about upsetting a few Xbots that are the minority? Even if they are screaming murder, they will be still doing something stupid tomorrow like defending series s and how it isn't hurting their next gen gaming, even though you can ask any Xbot right now and they would claim that 343i need to remove Xbone from the Halo Infinite dev pool. What a difference a few months makes to the average hardcore Xbox fan.
So if they had anything to say, all you can do is laugh at them at this stage.
@Takln Trash Not really.. the consoles aren't that powerful. They lose to the 2080 in most games... the 2080 cant run every game at 4k60.
@@andrewsqual I mean after watching the video both PS5 and Series X have basically the same frame rate. Evidently stutters are on PC too. However Xbox is running at a higher Rez. Based on the video series X is the optimum console to run this game on. However both PS5 and Series X run the game rather well, and are marked improvements over previous gens. Its a win win for everybody.
@Takln Trash they are both essentially the same on the mode that matters. Fixed 1440p and slightly smoother at 60 fps for ps5, and variable resolution of 1440p that can go down to 1080p at 60 fps. When they switch to 30 fps for the quality mode that is on series x, it just makes me want to barf because it's so awful to play any game with action at that.
This is odd... 16:45 this is not happening on my XSX on the performance mode. I'm using my older HDD to play the game.

Those hitches when you move from area to area have been in the game since launch. Even on PC installed on an SSD. And that scene with Forest Whitaker is a stutterfest on PC as well. Aside from that it ran really well but those loading hitches in each area as the game streams assets sadly can't be remedied by SSD.
I started a play-through when it first came out and never got around to continuing. This is a very nice surprise for the Series X, definitely performance mode for me and I'm starting a new play-through from scratch this weekend. What are everyone's thoughts on the chromatic aberration setting? Seems it makes it a little more blurry looking, but maybe I'm just looking for an issue. Great video as always guys!
I really can’t decide if I like the higher resolution or higher framer rate for this one. I’m constantly switching back and forth. My eyes are so use to 30fps…60 often feels like that soap opera effect that were in TVs
Never felt any of these stutters and performance drops. VRR is truly a gift from above.
VRR doesn't hide stutters, it only hides frame drops where the frame rate shifts up and down a bit. When a frame holds though or when the frame rate halves in a short time VRR won't help. I was playing this game on PC only a couple days ago and while arbitrary frame rates totally are hidden by VRR I did notice a few stutters. It's not nearly as bad as the game I've been maining recently (Satisfactory is very Indy and being early access means poor optimization) but it was still noticeable.
@@Skylancer727
VRR hides stutters that occur because of Vsync though, so there are still much less stutters in games that use double and triple buffered Vsync. I might have reached for a drink or something during that Saw cutscene, but I really have not felt any stutters during my playthough. It might be a cheesy thing to say, but I tend to notice these hickups quite well, and maybe even more now that they are usually eliminated.
@@XDLugia no V sync also doesn't help with stutters either. Stutters are too fast for VRR to kick in and V sync more kicks in to prevent arbitrary frame rates like 43fps. Stutters happen no matter what. I can say though that DF over exaggerated how obvious they are. In my like 3 hours on the game, I really only noticed it twice. And it really is something you blink you miss it. Considering they always happen from traversal and not from combat its really not going to stand out unless you're looking for it.
@@Skylancer727 I don't think you understood what I meant about Vsync and stuttering. I was talking about when a triple buffered Vsynced game gets uneven frame pacing when hitting arbitrary frame rates like 43 FPS like you said. The game stutters instead of getting tearing, but VRR does indeed eliminate those kind of stutters.
Sweet vid!
lol I just came from ecks too video. Good to see actual analysis on this.
Dear DF, your work is so very appreciated. It's fantastic devs are finally giving us 60FPS options, thank you so much to Respawn Entertainment. However in this particular case, I had to stop playing the game due to the constant hitches and stutters you mentioned. I just can't think of a valid reason why they need to be there. Great game though but for those sensitive to frame rate drops and stutters like myself there are other great games which run perfectly. This is perhaps due to certain engine limitations? I don't know, I am not an expert, but look at Frostbite 2, and how well that looks and runs. I still think Battlefront 2 looks outstanding at 1440p(+) I really respect Respawn Entertainment for doing the patch though. And the fact they are using resolution sensibly instead of just throwing 4K and only 4K in your face is absolutely stupendous. Developers need to know that resolution, bells and whistles, all good! RIGHT up to just BEFOOOOOOOORE the point these luxuries drop the frame rate below the TARGET frame rate...
Another game which seems to struggle with consistency/stutters is Borderlands 3. [I should edit in I have tested both these games, Fallen Order and B3, on PC as well - high end, NVME, fast RAM, 8 core Ryzen etc etc..]

I just want to say, as a game enthusiast, I really appreciate the level of detail this channel goes into. I also like that it keeps the game developers and publishers aware of how their game is received by the public. So whether it's the publishers rushing it, or devs cutting too many corners on graphics to achieve a certain level of performance, they get held responsible and consumers end up with a better game. Thank you DF

Might pick this back up for another playthrough to see how much more responsive it is. It looks like it may end up more fun this time around with the inputs not so inconsistent.
Hi Guys, i'am playing this on PC with a strong CPU, fast NVME SSD and RTX 3070 and fast 32GB DDR4 with pagefile deactivated to monimized trouble with IO and the stuttering is almost a gamebreaker for me, didn't expect that at all. Thankfully just bought it on epic for 14 bucks, otherwise i would have taken my money back because not fixing those stuttering issues after such a long time is not really speaking for either EA or the dev team.

To those mature enough to enjoy whichever system they own, and respect people for having different tastes in gaming, keep up the good work, and happy gaming! 👍
Chill out dude

Thanks DF for reminding me that I still have this game on psn digital. Time to go back and replay. This was the star wars game that made me like star wars related movies and series.
This game is great! Thanks for bringing it back to the surface DF
I disable motion blur for only one reason: reduces my motion sickness for some reason. I don't know why, but it does. I do a lot of things to reduce it.
That scene on Kishik is choppy too on PC. I think it is just a coding error that happens when the game is running over 40 fps.
Well, I tried to run the game at 30FPS (half adaptive vsync) and it was unplayable. And the stutters were there at 30FPS (VSYNC OFF), 30FPS (VSYNC ON), 60FPS (VSYNC ON) and 100FPS+ VSYNC OFF... it's not really an "error" AFAIK as they are probably aware of the reasons for it but it seems like it's a hard issue to fix. Otherwise, why would Disney not have put out a patch for a game that really did quite well that they want a sequel for?
So Series X performance mode runs mostly at 1440p vs 1200p on PS5, DF says they look practically the same, but sometimes drops 2 to 3 frames, now there's a noticeable difference. DF's always a lot more critical when it comes to Xbox, but lax when talking about PS5.
I've noticed it too
Cry more
They also didnt mention XSX has better shadows
It's not indicative of PS5 still because of Sony's awkward backwards compatibility. So much performance left untouched.
MS really hit it out the park with their BC solution, hope Sony let devs release diet PS5 patches rather than this PS4Pro+ patch.
He is more critical because the series X ha sthe better hardware and it being worse in anything shouldn't be possible
Good stuff!!
Load time improved? Didn't see any mention/compare of it in the vid.
They did a poor "optimization" on the series s, as if they didn't bother to try. Then again, the engine is very much at fault if the better consoles are having issues as well
It looks good in person tho.. i have series s playing on a 4k tv from a normal distance is hard to pixel count unless your looking for a reason to criticize the game. Plays great.
True, but this is BC, so the games are simply running with 4TF of raw power. None of the benefits of Series S are really used.
True, is still too early to see proper optimizations. A lot of people speak poorly with of the Series S when in reality is on par with PS5 and Series X. Sure it doesn't have 4K native, but other than that is still a next gen console that is able to output ray tracing and things like 120 FPS.
As games keep being release and tailored toward the next gens, we will be able to see what the three machines are truly capable of doing.
Thank you for saying this. Series s is being underutilized so much with a lot of games. Like devs are just like whatever, but the console can do more than this. Not even 1080p? Wtf ea, no wtf microsoft for letting so many studios do this.

The "S" is going to get some titles that are super optimized that look and run great relative to a similarly specced PC or the arguably similar (in respects) XBox One X. On the other hand you're going to see some games perform poorly in the future too because the weaker GPU and lower memory will be a problem just like you see the XBox One (non-X) not being the focus.
Having said that, there's a general push towards scaling towards game SMOOTHNESS so stutters should slowly fade away over time. Game engines like Unreal Engine 5 (Lumen/Nanite) are being designed to enable game developers to create their best artistic vision possible then the hardware just dynamically adjust the quality to meet the FPS goal.
So we've got a kind of WEIRD situation where typically the weaker specced system struggles with each passing year but at the same time the software is improving that is aimed at making that a non-issue.
*We should also see big improvements in the backwards compatibility layer such as adding AI upscaling to get a lot of games running at 60FPS that can't do so now.
This game is absolutely brilliant!!!
It's one of my favorite things in media, star wars history.
Yes. It’s possibly the best Star Wars games ever made.
Glad to see consoles get some love, it was indeed pretty rough at launch and I'm glad I got to experience it on a high spec PC with uncapped frame rates. Easily one of my top games of this gen personally, feel like doing another play through now :).
I just finished this game on the 1st of jan. Still have some stuff to clean up so I'll enjoy a second pass and check out the 4k mode on the xbsx.
The upgrade on my SS is HUGE
Yes!! My console of choice has an extra 2 fps during intense gameplay, my life has now improved considerably.
Are those stutters related to Dx shader caching? RDR2 had it on PC and Vulkan didn't iirc
Call me crazy, but I don’t remember there originally being stutters in the cutscene where you get out of the crashed walker on Kashyyyk.
I’ve had like 3 playthroughs since launch on a ps4 pro and just picked it up a couple of days ago after not having played it for over a year. I also had serious stutters in that particular cutscene.
Maybe it’s just rosy retrospection, but I recall that the cutscenes, in general, used to run better than they do now🤷♂️
From what I'm aware those hitches only happen when the game is running over a certain framerate, happens on PC too. PS4 Pro was presumably running low enough that it never happened.
Need to play this again!
Yes!! Digital Foundry heard the request
*"stutters even when running from the console's internal SSD..."*
Just like on PC. I have it running on a super fast SSD (3.5GBps seq reads) but the SSD doesn't really help much as the stutter is related to how the game engine is sending the texture data or something. Can't get around those issues unless they go into the core code and address them. Obviously it was a choice that is a hard to fix or they would have done so. I turned quality down to LOW so I was getting well over 100FPS. Stutters remained. It's mostly not a big deal but at times it's quite annoying.
Another delicious episode! Time to play this on my PS5 I think
