Honestly this is one of if not the most informative channels on the Fuji-X system.
Awww, thank you so much!! So kind of you to say!! 🙏 🙏
I truly agree 👍
yes! I've found your channel so helpful and your enthusiasm brightens my day 😁
Would you please do a tutorial on the XT30 ? Similar, but different, to its big brothers and sooo confusing for a newbie like me
I truly agree
Honestly, you are right.
The amount of technical information that you know about this camera is crazy, and you sharing this for free and the time spent making these videos is greatly appreciated. 👍👍👍👍
I dont understand why he has only 61k subscribers. He deserves 5-10x more subscribers!
@@deathism probably because Fuji users are less than Canon and Sony. If he were to make videos about those brands he definitely can. BUT he is a fuji fanboy like all of us here :D
coming from Canon to Fuji would be HORRIBLE without your channel ….. truly, thank you very much for the information you provide. You obviously put in the time to produce great videos and it shows.
This is my favorite fuji channel. I've learned how everything works almost exclusively from this channel. Thank you very much for your hard work.
I still had lots of fun watching this even though I have a relatively dated (X-H1) Fuji camera.
And with I wish my fellow Fuji shooters a very pleasant Friday.
That's awesome to hear Jake!!! Thanks man.. and the X-H1 is a great camera. I've heard nothing but great things about it.
It could be the best x series camera from fuji
@@okiforbreakfast the beauty of the x-system:
Depends on your needs and wants.
You are the best and the most efficient youtuber for Fuji systems! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
This feature would be amazing if Fuji would store all 3 exposures as individual raw files, plus spit out a merged raw of the 3 exposures that you could then edit, both in camera or back on your photo editor of choice. It would save the step of merging in Lightroom and simplify the culling process, but you would still have the 3 original exposures to play with in Lightroom or Photoshop if something got whacky on the copy merged in-camera.
I could also see this HDR feature being useful for spitting out a JPEG to share immediately, but based on your testing it seems that we would have to expose for the shadows a bit, overexposing the highlights, and let the HDR function bring the highlights back down. If that works well, that'd be worth having as a feature on the drive dial.
What a rabbit hole that HDR feature can end up being. Thanks for putting the time into it and uploading another great video for us.
I love your channel and constantly look for new information on the XT4 from you. I find you to be very informative, enthusiastic, and very entertaining. Thanks for making a complicated instruction manual much easier to understand.
I picked up an X-T4 a few months ago and these videos have been so helpful. I do enjoy the Fast Friday videos, because sometimes I want to figure out a setting right before a shoot and they get right to the point!
I've had questions about the HDR and dynamic range functions on the camera for so long and I could never really find any helpful information anywhere, even custom user manuals. These videos have been extremely helpful and empowering as I try to think through which settings would be best for the various scenes I'm shooting, especially ones with lots of contrast. Thank you so much for taking the time to do these videos!
I've been wondering about the raw files for a while, so I really hope you can figure something out. These videos are so high quality and so informative. Thank you so much
Thank you so much for the hard work you’ve put into all of these videos on the Fuji X system. It’s been so rewarding putting all your lessons to use. Cheers!
Thankyou for very clear advice on this topic. Out of all the Fuji channels i watch, yours is the greatest information sharing of them all. No rambling or ego trips, just clear knowledge transfer. Many Thanks!
What an awesome channel. Great detail and fantastic delivery. Thank you so much. Best wishes from Wales (UK)
As always an excellent useful and informative video, Chris.
I’d love to see longer and more in depth videos, as well as these shorter “just the basics/most important”. I would certainly support you in a way you can spend more time creating this content. Hope you can find a way that works for you.
Have a great weekend!
Andrew
I discovered your channel a few weeks ago and I just wanted to say that I love your personality and the way that you are teaching us things on fuji cameras. I'm 17 years old and I'm trying to learn photography and to get a fuji camera too, your videos have a proper identity that I personally love very much. I also saw your video about the fuji focus modes that you made in 2019 and the last part touched me real hard, that's what convinced me to write you a comment to express my feelings about your work. Can't wait to see you having your 100k subscribers and when I will have my camera I'm gonna celebrate it the same way as you did in this video ! (with some true Champagne this time 😉) Big love from France🇫🇷 We love your work!
Thank you so much Noam!!! That means a lot to me!! Le meilleur à vous et j'espère vous revoir bientôt ici!
Great video! The lack of documentation from Fuji is often a little infuriating. Your efforts in figuring out how this stuff works is MUCH appreciated. 🤠
Need to say I’m an amateur learning so much from your videos you explain everything for a beginner to understand keep up the good work thanks.
Great series Chris... I learn a lot watching your vlogs... keep them coming...
I just discover your channel couple of weeks ago. I'm watching all your videos about XT-4 camera, i'm learning a lot. Thank you very much. You are very clear in your explanations and also very funny. Thanks for giving us such a lot of precious information.
I love your videos, i just recently bought Xt4 and i love your tips, grettings from Colombia.
much appreciated, your videos have been helping me a ton learning to use the x100v and xt4
Thanks again Chris! You help me to understand my Fuji XT4 step by step better! Thank you for your effort 😊
Happy to help!
Chris you are my go to channel for FUJI X series info. Thank you and keep up the great work... please
Absolutely love your videos. It’s like a dad teaching what’s he’s passionate about. Just got an XT4 for my trip to Egypt
Your channel really helped a lot! Thank you so much! Love it!
I selfishly want you to become a full-time you tuber! I am a total newbie, and your delivery and instruction is amazing. I’ve browsed other fujifilm instruction channels, and find I’m more engaged while watching YOUR videos. Thank you - I’m learning a ton!

Excellent as always, mate.

Hi Chris, PLEASE, PLEASE do a comparison video on HDR vs. Exp Bracketing on XT4.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't HDR technically just a kind of automatic exposure bracketing?
@@martinbelusa1482 what i thought too... except one is auto, one is you got to do it yourself with a bunch of masking.
So luminosity masking is not the only option for processing HDR files you create yourself with exposure bracketing.
Lightroom and Photoshop both have built-in tools for doing this. There are also a number of third-party options.
Unless we figure out how to get at the embedded RAW files, exposure bracketing is still the better road if you want control.
Great tutorial! I like the fact that Fuji’s HDR function doesn’t mess with shadows because I can pull out any shadow detail in post. I love Fuji’s JPEGs (and HEIF). I never shoot Raw. Until now I’ve not used FR or HDR settings - I’ve always set the highlights settings a bit lower. If I play around with highlight AND shadow settings I get messy results. So I might use HDR having seen your excellent tutorial.
You are such a great guy, thanks for sharing

I did some extensive testing and the upshot is that the only difference between RAW files with and without HDR applied (I used the 800% + HDR like you did) was that the ones with HDR were actually darker (and of course slightly cropped) due to a lower ISO (1000 with HDR vs. 2000 without HDR in my samples and I used Auto ISO with identical shutter speed and aperture and converted with the latest version of Capture One 21). The highlight recovery had about the same limitations in both RAW files and was not nearly as good as the JPEGs with HDR, so it looks like HDR is definitely a JPEG only feature, but as such useful in some high contrast situations. The three images taken don't seem to be baked into the RAW file at all (not matter what size), so no joy there!:)
Well Chris, without your chanel fuji users would have to suffer. Your videos are priceless. Thank you.
Magnifico video y me ha encantado que tenga el subtitulo en español, muchísimas gracias
No tiene el título en español, RUclips te lo traduce automáticamente ya que tienes ese idioma por defecto ;-)
I shoot real estate and if the results I get are anything like described - it’s a game changer for me. Subscribed!
That's awesome, thank you so much!
That was another hdr episode! 👍thx!
You bet!
Great info video. Fuji should hire you!
Thanks so much
Thanks!
I hope Fuji will improve this in-body HDR in a future update of the firmware...
If the HDR data is hidden in the file, it might be reflected in the curve. Even without that being obvious, adjusting the curve would correct all. I just traded a bunch of Canon lenses for an XT-4 and lens at KEH. Having had digital cameras since they originated, my first one being a lightphase back, your videos are very helpful in understanding all the features of this camera. Thanks!
Greeting from Russia! Your channel is the best among all russian youtubers about x-t4!)) Your information is very usefull! And you are such an inspiring person! P.s. thanks for “Правда»)) Keep it up!
Seems like combining exposure bracketing with continuous high shutter actuations, followed by hdr image processing in post, would be more practical.
Let's get Chris to 100K and a Fuji sponsorship. Thank you for making these videos Chris!!
I can't confirm this because I'm shooting with X-Trans III cameras, but check the maximum values for exposure in LR for the converted DNG file. A 32bit TIFF-file has exposure values between +-10EV where a normal RAW-file only has +-5EV. Also I'd suggest doing a video about the compressed lossless RAW-format in Fuji cameras ;)
Great channel.
I've been interested in photography for a while now and am just collecting for my first decent camera.
You have convinced me to join the "Fuji family".
By the way.
RAW files can be edited simply as databases, maybe here it would be possible to combine these three layers?
What do you think?
Great video as always Chris.
Wondering if it wouldn't be better to just shoot 3 pictures and merge as HDR in Lightroom...
Was shooting real estate with my xt2 and having to do all this manually. The hdr feature will save me so much time and inconsistencies in my images!
Knowing that you are actually very busy with all that Fuji stuff, I have to admit, that you are my „source of truth“ when it comes to Fuji stuff. Thanks for all your efforts - especially when it comes to HDR in the Fuji space. I came to the conclusion, that Fuji somehow lose track, how to deal with HDR. To my knowlege there are a least 4 options. I don‘t mind and stick to AE bracketing. 😊
New Subscriber! This is the best explanation of Fujifilm HDR mode that I could find. THANK YOU! Do you ever change your Sharpness and Clarity when not using HDR mode? Or when using HDR in less than 800 +? What's my best option for Real Estate interior? Taking multiple exposures and combining Post, or using HDR and playing with contrast, clarity and brushwork post?
Thank u man
That is some crazy Fuji HDR processing. Like the DR look better. Thanks for sharing.
Really appreciate your videos! I just switched to the Fujifilm system (x-t4) from Nikon a few months ago and the menu/customizations are still creating some confusion for me. It seems like Fujifilm has a lot of settings that are very similar/redundant so I'm still trying to figure out what fits my style of shooting.
Hi Chris, thank you for another great episode ! (After that flattery could you give me your considered opinion for a good gimbal for my XT 3 ? Thanks ! )
It’s crazy I watch these. I just need to get a Fuji finally. 👍
Tammyyyyy 👋🏽🙂
So many benefits to having waited! XT4 was the camera I was hoping for when I bought the XT3. Took me a month to choose between the Sony a7iii vs the fuji XT3. A very very tough decision. Full Frame + Ibis + wider lens selection + auto focus + shallower DOF, less noise at higher ISOs -VS- Fuji colour science👊🏽💥 4K60👊🏽💥10BIT👊🏽💥Chris Lee 💥👊🏽BAM 🤣 XT4 ibis would be clutch. Tho I’d rather have digital image stabilization like in the the canon EOS R
@@vishal_trivedi so you think the Fuji definitely the way to go. I’m only upgrading because I really want better dynamic range and image stabilizer. Thank you so much for your comment. You’re so sweet to reach out. 😉
I use Sony and Fuji in DR Sony big strength.
That's AWESOME Tammy!!!! Please let me know if you do and if I can help with any questions, etc.!
Tammy Sypniewski np! I’m ok with the dynamic range on the Fuji, but I would be remiss if I didn’t say Sony has the upper hand in DR amongst other things. As I think on it, it sends me back to that tough decision, which still lacks clarity lol. Rumour has it Sony a7iv this year? But Fuji is a nice image out of camera; those film sims 👌🏽🔥 the XT4 will get you decent handheld with ibis. EOS R is the ultimate vlogger’s cam if that should become your thing; wild what they can achieve with just digital stabilization. Dear Fuji...
Haha! at the very end you said exactly what I was thinking! Is it really necessary?...BTW you can add the Fuji X-S10 to the list of Fuji cameras with the HDR feature. Actually, I keep being surprised by how many of the XT4 features this camera has! Great video and thank you!
👍 👍 👍
i'm always excited to see a notification from this channel (:
9:30 does fujifilm hdr raf file have more flexibility when editing? if we can recover more detail in lightroom with shadow and highlight sliders from hdr raf than a normal raf like we can do with a merge hdr file, i think that's the point and it's enough for me. i don't get the advantage of converting it to dng. (i own a x-t3 by the way, it's not relevent to me right now, but i'm curious)
As always great video, thank you!
I'd like to use an opportunity and ask you about AF-ON and Tracking while shooting stills. While i was fooling around with camera i thought that it would be very handy if one could release AF-ON button and the camera would continue to track selected object. I hate that i must keep the button pressed for the tracking to keep working. So please tell me your thoughts on that subject.
Great explanation of HDR on the X-T4! It leaves me wondering though... is it not better to simply bracket and use the HDR photomerge option in Lightroom? I guess it could be handy if you’re a JPG only shooter, or use another RAW editing program that maybe doesn’t offer easy HDR merging.
Most definitely YES for many reasons. The Adobe software-created HDR merge from 3,5 or 7 auto-bracketed Fujifilm RAWs will be far better (and more user-controllable) than what the X-T4 can produce internally, and for several reasons. In my 2021 tests, Photoshop did a far better 5-RAF frames HDR merge than Lightroom, as Lightroom is more of less an 'auto' merge. Photoshop lets you control several parameters. DXO makes the HDR Efex Pro 2 app which exceeds what I can create in Photoshop. Beyond that there are other HDR-dedicated apps well worth doing same-frames demos of to compare. Hope that helps.
Great effort to make any videos of this channel. What camera used in your videos? I think it is x-t4, right?
Probably quite interesting information for property photographers shooting non flash natural light shots (brkt) Adobe dng converters are like lens manufacturers that bring out fast lenses like 0.95/ 1.2 apatures but they have fringing and only work great at F4. I wonder what the 3 different files looked like in capture one.
Hi. im a fan of your channel. can you do a low light performance on the xt3 and xt4 like using only 3 candles? do a video record or photos. and can you share with us the best settings ?
Love your channel! So informative! Tried your technique for increasing Clarity and Sharpness when in HDR 800%+ but when in HDR drive setting on my X-T4 it grays out the Clarity adjustment and therefore doesn’t let me change it. Sharpness is ok. I’m in firmware version 1.10. What am I missing?
Great, this video about dynamic range, I actually learned something new today! One question remains: is there any reason not to use the highest dynamic range available for a given ISO? Or, perhaps in other words, why is this a setting at all?
I wonder if Fuji’s X-Raw Studio would be able to read the 3 hidden RAW files? Or maybe at the very least give some control over the merging in post-processing.
Fast Friday Baby :)
I don't know what fuji was thinking when they put that function there. Why use HDR when you have BKT? They should have use that time to improve the auto focus tracking performance when shooting video. The XT4 video continuous auto focus sucks, at least when using the 16-80mm and macro 80mm and recording animals.
By the way, I love your content.
Yeah you can work around it with autofocus range limiter, I got the same lens, it's better than face/eye detection, less hunting 😁👍
@@williamaungleyraud thanx, i'll give that a try. i dont use face\eye detection since i dont shoot people.
Do the fuji HDR RAF/converted DNG files have cleaner shadow and highlight recovery than the regular RAF files? Just wanted to make sure whether that’s covered when it was said that no difference was seen between the HDR RAF and the converted DNG.
Even though the DNG file "looks” the same, did you happen to compare the amount of shadow and highlight recovery you can do on it versus the RAF or JPEG file? I suspect that may lead you to the answer. When I do this process manually by taking three bracketed exposures and convert them into an HDR file in Lightroom, the resulting image looks the same as the 0EV exposure, but the amount of detail I can recover from the upper and lower ranges of the histogram without added noise is dramatically improved.
I was thinking the same thing... the whole time I was watching and waiting for him to push the highlights and shadows in lightroom to see the difference from a regular file... I am, without looking, almost certain that you will have a lot more room to edit the HDR Raf file... This would be really cool to apply in a real estate photography sitiation or intense landscape.
I'm big fan of you . From india. Sir pls xt4 which lence suitable for youtube vlogging and explore videos . Also need photography too . Pls suggest me .
Hi, could you compare it to bracketing, what is the difference?
Now I'm curious...is the HDR+ setting in the X100V the same as the HDR-800+ setting in the XT4? Or is it yet another set of parameters? Hmmm...
BTW...your videos are great!
So, is that extra information in the raw file usable? I.E. if I try and lift the shadows or bring back the highlights, will I have more information to work with?
My X-S10 also has the same HDR mode but it is strange in so occasions and in bright light sets the shutter speed at 1/500 which results in overexposed jpegs. This is when shooting in Aperture priority. Anyone has a guess how I can go around this?
Do you know if it's possible separete the 3 pics in LR our photoshop? Someone? Thanks!
If it weren't for your channel, my camera would be gathering dust.
I'm no technophobe, but complexity of menus and having to sync multiple dials/ settings in order to do what you want was doing my head in!
Would love to see you add a travel camera like the Fuji XT30 to your line-up... all the questions on google show many people are as confused as I am 😊
Manual isn't user-friendly, either
Thanks Chris! 👍
I often set my X-T30 to bracket three different ISOs. When I go into Darktable and merge the raf files into an HDR file, it always seems to make the colours change a lot - often more yellowy. No idea why it does it, but heyho! Puts me off using it. As usual, it reminds that it's better just to try to get the light and composition right when I take the photo.
I don’t use darktable and I am not looking at your merged image results, but there are probably simple adjustments which will probably resolve the color issue.
I would start with the white balance setting. If possible, you will want to set this before the merge occurs. It may look “wrong” at that stage, but if it gives you the right final result, it could still be good. Try lowering the temperature setting and see if that helps.
Option 2: if you are doing images with artificial light (such as under streetlights at night) or with mixed light(different light sources) it is possible actual light color is being exaggerated. For this, try dialing back saturation and see if it helps.
It doesn't make sense to bracket ISO. You are not getting more light into the sensor. It's the same as lifting the shadows slider on a single picture.
Bracketing aperture is not the smartest move too since your depth of field would change between photos.
It only makes sense to bracket shutter speed.
What is the difference between in Camera HDR and shooting bracketed shots and merging in post-processing? Everything I shoot on my X-T30 is done bracketed (2 shots +- 3 stops).
Can you please explain the AF-C Custom Settings?
Probably using bracketing and then edit the 3 photos on Aurora HDR will most certainly provide a much better result?
Hi, thank you for your awesome videos, these have been super helpful! I noticed, the HDR raw files looks completely different than the HDR jpegs, when you open the raws in Capture One. The Jpegs looks the same on x-t4's screen and on my Macs quick preview program. Do you have had this kind of a problem? The HDR raw files are impossible to edit... and honestly the HDR jpegs looks so much better. I have used both the 800% setting and the 800+.
I have same problem when you open the Raws in Lighroom.. the raw HDR can't be develop..
ant tips for the XT3 ? is there a way to do quick HDR or the only solution is to BKT + lightroom ?
The term you were thinking of was "Clown Puke."
Very interesting explanation, thanks.
I knew puke had to be in there somewhere, just forgot the specifics. 😀
This is just a total guess, as I have an X-T2 so can't test it, but I wonder if you get the ability to edit those three hidden raw files inside the HDR raw file if you edit using In-Camera raw processing, or using X-Raw Studio?
hi, if you have raw files and use this HDR it will add a jpeg or do you need to have it on jpeg or raw + jpeg ? My sony doesn't let me do it if i have it on raw, which is annoying, wanted to be clear on fuji how it works. thanks
could you test hdr on the new X-T5 and H2?
I have a problem with the XT4 HDR RAW mode when put in lightroom.. the setting was changing in develop, the HDR look is gone. Why did it happen?
i saw this feature long time ago in menu but i never tried it😁
Do you know the amount of crop that happens, when HDR is switched on?
Compressed vs uncompressed raw pls.. thank you
