    It's crazy how closely they follow the manga actually; and I think that's partially why it feels so clunky and fast at times. But if 46 episodes is all we're getting.. I'm ok with this "dense packing" of content. And YES let's get a definitive ending to Miss Tomobiki this time!

      In a number of instances, I like when they deviate from just copying.
      One of my favorite gags is in the one where the guys pretend a girl is in love with Ataru. Mendo has Lum held tightly in his arms, and there’s a gag where she’s trying break free of his firm embrace.
      Another I like is the lipstick piece, where Lum swipes some across Ten’s face, and the force of the swipe causes him to spiral around a bit.

      They did that too in the old anime. In the first few episodes, things are fast and clunky but later episodes things are actually picking up. Of course the anime itself is still weird and bizarre but thats part of its charm. There are episodes where you actually have to think deep to understand.

    Next week will be the final episode of season 1, where we get to see who will become the Queen of Tomobiki High School! Can not wait
    Also for record, I do love this reboot so much I really watch the original anime to compare it, but tbh this season might be great if they actually give more comedic relief like in original, also it's feel rushed compared to original. But overall I will give the score rating for this season once I watch the final episode of season 1 next week, but for the word score I give this Good out of Excellent.
    After watching final episode, I have to say they finally delivered the best adaptation for Tomobiki Queen Contest, unlike Original Anime which kinda disappointing, which also reveal that Season 2 will be coming in 2024, which i'm excited because they can have a chance to at least improve more!

    thanks for continuing to review the reboot! I'm a big fan of the original 80s anime and i love how the reboot is handled. There's clearly so much love and respect for the source material that went into making it.
    My only issue with it is actually how closely they've followed the manga-- TOO close. What i loved about the original anime was that they added little original touches to make emotional episodes much more memorable. Little scenes that actually showed and elaborated how Ataru actually cares about Lum. Which is why I wish episodes like "Since Your Parting" deserve 1 whole episode for themselves. This can be said about the humor as well. The randomness of how explosions were just put in as silly slapstick were hilarious in the original. The reboot's humor is toned down in comparison.
    But I guess, these are small sacrifices to be done especially because we are only given 46 episodes to cover a 300+ chapter manga. Which can also explain for the fast pacing as well. In the end though, still a great reboot! Thankful that we're in the year 2023 with new Urusei Yatsura content!!

    • @ericjanssen394

      Again, it depends on the original manga: "After You Left" and the Pickled-Plum episodes on the old series had to stretch themselves out to half-hour length with long filler and song montages, and staying close to the manga just gave us the "basic" story. Sticking to the manga seems to be the "excuse" for doing a remake (how many remakes say "We're doing the REAL book this time"?), but keeping it to the printed page seems to be more of Newbie Introduction for new kids who don't remember what the old fans talked about.

    I definitely agree with you on the soundtrack, it isn't very good, but the adaptation as a whole is great! I love the references to Ranma 1/2 and how in episode 22, Ataru is reading Maison Ikkoku. I also would love to see a new Ranma 1/2 anime adaptation, as it is my favourite of Rumiko Takahashi's works.

    For me it's worth to watch. The show has that addicting energy that you can't get it out of your mind, the original and the reboot gives that feel.
    I also like the cuteness of the characters in both versions, and how bright and colorful the show is. The craziness, the funnies and the feels are into one show. It's why I enjoyed it. I look forward to the reboot's season 2

  • @Swiss_Bohemian
    @Swiss_Bohemian Год назад +10

    I mostly agree with your sentiments. I like the new series too, but I don't quite like the pacing and the OST. I think the new series works best when it adapts one story per episode instead of two or three because it allows the comedy to develop better, such as was the case with episode 20 with Sugar, Ginger and Pepper. Episode 21 is an example how I didn't quite like it. Mendo's story with Ryouko's voodo doll has always been one of my favourite episodes because it's so damn hilarious when it comes to the anime's original ideas (Mendo getting trampled by cows, an elephant and the ensuing bromance interlude with Ataru narrating his fallen comrade Mendo), whereas in the reboot some of the jokes are just underdevelopped and the mayhem is finished too soon.
    When it comes to the music, I'm a big fan of the original soundtracks and have them on CD. Some of the BGM tracks of the original are simply iconic and further enhance the overall feel of the show and its sudden mood swings, whereas the new OST is mostly bland in my opinion with the exception of a few tracks. I also wish they had included a song like Margarita in the drunken Lum episode, but they redeemed themselves afterwards with that oldschool rock song in the magic lipstick episode.

    I’m really liking this reboot, I do just hope they can be a little diverse with the original manga and possibly anime, like possibly an actual marriage of lum and Ataru, I kind of find the ending of both Urusei Yatsura and Ranma 1/2 both underwhelming (with UY being better)
    Another thing I wish they can bring back are the cameos, idk if it’s still legal to do it at these times, but just imagine a alternate Spider-Man in the show, it would seem very cool to me.

    I'm enjoying the reboot so far.
    5:36 - That's just the modern anime adaptation thing. Cramming as much material into one episode. The Vampire Dies in No Time crams three chapters into a single episode, but since it's goofy comedy show, it sorta works. Tsukimichi: Moonlight Chronicles crammed almost 10 chapters into a single episode just to speed things up. That's a lot.

  • @bornanime3255
    @bornanime3255 Год назад +4

    I don't think the original's earlier seasons are dated per se. It's definitely less clean and consistent, however I feel like where it's strengths lie is in the expressiveness. Characters are always making interesting faces and moving around in entertaining bizzare ways that greatly increase the quality of the humour. Plus, I feel like the animators added quite a few nice gags and utilised the animated medium to enhance the experience really well. Like in episode 1 when they kidnapped Ataro or when he and Shinobu had that TV drama parody scene before the final game of tag. Overall it just oozes with this goofy rubber house era style of animation that was popular at the time and it's something that can be appreciated if you don't obsess over the more consistent rigid style of animation that's popular today. It's kinda like One Piece in that regard where it isn't afraid to squash and stretch characters in ridiculous ways rather than just switching to a chibi or more simple designs for the gags like what became more common place.

  • @CrimsonMysteryCake
    @CrimsonMysteryCake Год назад +10

    the reboot looks really pretty but its biggest problem is that its so truncated. it has too big a hill to climb to try and condense an almost 400 chapter manga from the 70s and 80s to a 42 episode anime for modern day. A lot of the characters aren’t as well fleshed out because of this, and a lot of the jokes dont land as hard. I really like the reboot, above all im just grateful to be getting any urusei yatsura content in the modern day, but i just cant see recommending this reboot over the source material or the original anime. Sure its prettier but the manga is beautiful in its own right and hilarious, and the og anime love it or hate it really takes the source material and twists it in a new direction. the only way i can imagine recommending the new anime over the original is if you really like breakneck fast paced comedy. and i say all this while still loving this reboot it is better than most other modern day anime in a lot of ways.

    The sad part is this reboot, has to cram about six years worth of good source material into now 23 episodes. The reboot doesn't have the luxury of years of putting out movies and episodes like the original did. At least the good thing is now the world gets to see what made the series so great in Japan back in the 1980s.

    I really enjoyed the reboot of UY, the animation is great, both oppenings and one of the endings are great too (don't forguet the nostalgia too). But the comedy is 'lacking of spice' (not as close as the original anime), some of the episodes are way too compressed and the atmosphere soundtrack is kindda disappointing. Great video btw!.

    • @Skye2993
      @Skye2993 Год назад

      I think the reason with the humor being toned down is because of nowadays and you could say that’s absurd considering what anime does put out but seeing Anime nowadays their kinda shifting away from y’know the horny characters which Ataru is compared to now he’s like a flirt and toning down fanservice scenes to major degree’s which the original had more ramped up then the remake of Urusei Yatsura and a lot of the jokes in the 80’s Urusei Yatsura would definitely not fly today if people saw it now especially on social media so I think they dodge a bullet with that one keeping it tame and toned down because hoo boy can people lose their minds when they dislike something.

    Sometimes after watching a darker toned series, a heartbreaking romance comedy, a mystery thriller or even a high octane actiion series. You need something like this that can remind you that not every form of art needs to be to realistic, sophisticated and philosophical. Sometimes it just needs to be fun, sure you can still import sophisticated and philosophical ideas to your work but not everything needs to be that way.
    This show is kind of on the same level of Blood Blockade Battlefront for me. The level of absurdity that can happen during each episode and yet still remain somewhat constructive to an over arching narrative. Although that narrative isn't necessarily the focal point of that story, it's at it's best when you don't know what's expected next. In shows like Dragon Ball, you get the next threat or quest the Z fighters have to go through, the next big training arc or technique the cast must learn to defeat said enemy. You know have some general idea of what to expect, it may not play out word for word how you predicted but at the very least you have some level of knowledge in terms of what's coming for the next episode.
    It's very refreshing to be ingulfed in another series that doesn't feel like I've gotta invest my full dedicated attention to in order to get something out of it. I've seen a few series where I got bored and just dropped completely despite knowing there are some banger and awesome stuff to come. It was because the narrative of the story just kept dragging on and only leaving me with more questions than answers. Some of those series I've recently restarted just so I can get some closure on them. This show however grabbed my attention the moment I pressed play to the moment the final credits rolled for the first season of the remake. I cannot wait to see the OG, because I need this content NOW. It's rare that I find a series where I can pick up and get lost in for what seems like forever. I don't typically pick up a series that's over 100 episodes long unless I know I know I'll enjoy it. I cannot wait to start the OG series. For me it's just the right amount of dumb fun, with a few sprinkles of good writing and moments here and there. I don't have to take it seriously and that's the best part.
    I need that kind of dumb fun to remind myself not to take these stories and narratives so seriously all the time. I'm so glad to have given this show a shot, it's the right kind of escape from reality, at least for me it is. Darker shows tend to make me a bit more depressed and broody.

    I actually think that animation is one of those things that kills the new version of Urusei Yatsure, just not being sharp and expressive enough.
    Other problems are related to the script and more general execution, like a lot of humor especially the Monty Python style and epic rants just being deleted.

    In my never-to-be-humble opinion, The old series is better than the reboot. (As is usually the case.) For one thing, the art & animation on the original were better, the colours were more vibrant & alive, the backgrounds were rendered in lush, beautiful watercolours & acrylics (some of them I wish I could frame & hang on my walls), and the layout had more depth, almost a 3d cinematic feel to it (which explains why the series & characters adapted so well to feature films & OVAs.) The character animation was also better on the original; more dynamic & lively and expressive; even the facial expressions were so on-point that you almost knew what the characters were thinking before they spoke, and the comic-exaggerations (when & where appropriate) were wild and side-splittingly funny. The new version however has none of these qualities. The colours are pale, flat, washed out, featureless & lifeless, the animation is stiff and (again) lifeless, the characters' faces are devoid of expression, everything looks flat, stiff & repetitive, as though it were rendered with a set of rubber-stamps. I don't know if they were trying to cut costs or if modern artists just plain don't know how to animate anymore the way they used to back in the 1980s, or if they farmed it out to some 3rd rate studio in some other country to do the actual animation grunt-work or what, but the new series is, on so many levels, just plain dull in comparison to the liveliness of the original '80s series. It's dull, flat, washed-out & bland. Even the voice-acting is off. Although the voices of the 2 main characters are good, they still lack a great deal of the charm & appeal of the original voice-actors, while the voices of the other background supporting characters aren't even close; some are way off, in fact. And on top of all this, everything has a rushed, hectic feel to it; as though they're trying to compensate for the shortcomings by pushing everything along at a frantic, breakneck pace that one barely has a chance to catch one's breath or even allow enough time for the jokes & gags to fully register.
    I mean, admittedly, the new version has some good qualities (it generally follows the original manga-stories more closely than the old series did-the main point that everybody harps on), but still, this is a trade-off, one that comes at a tremendous cost in terms of the drawbacks listed above.

    this adaptation broke my heart
    well yes it is visually much more advanced, but some parts of the oryginal adapration were engraved in popculture and small nitpicks like lum's eyes or makeup, or her wearing a lot more clothes than usuall makes it a bit jaring
    but taht is not the part that made me drop the series
    i was getting incresingly iritated that overcramed episodes have a lot of buildup for jokes i remember and the jokes themeselves are missing, were changed and tamed down or simply characters were changed to avoid the situation all together
    all cartoonish parts are missing
    and many characters just feel wrong or non existing
    you feel like all girls including lum and shinobu at times have one shared personality
    and yes megane is a potato, but so are kenske, chibi and perm and kakugari, and they not even mean to ataru they have no personalities
    and i simply hate those shaft inspired people cutout with no face, because in every episode i remember that was the showcase of strange misbehaving students from eating in class to watching tv and having kotatsu partys. and new cherry isn't even half as creepy as the oryginal , what also a nitpick lums voice isn't flirtatious enough and lack any gradient, she either nice or angry now
    so yes i was getting iritated with it and droped the series before it could really make me angry. i don't know if it was the right choice but it was something i had to do

    Having only a limited amount of time and a limited number of episodes in which to grab an audience, I have noticed that the new series is concentrating on introducing the major females of the series, and making them look way sexier than they were in the original. Has any body noticed the change in the bottom of Lum's bikini? It is no longer the "animal skin" that she originally wore, or that of a Oni out of japanese legend, but looks more like a modern-day "hi Leg" bathing suit bikini. Princess Kurama's always-revealing outfight is even more so than ever!
    The one character is the new series that I don't think they got right is Sakura. They made her slightly too skinny, and her voice is that of a high school girl, not the mature 30-ish something that she is in the original, but that is a minor complaint in an otherwise excellent remake.

    The later episodes of the old series found their groove enough to not NECESSARILY follow Rumiko's manga, unlike the loud, shrill first-season episodes that simply pasted them onscreen, complete with unlikable characters and chaotic splash-page non-endings.
    The remake is going in with the later series' cool vibe, so they improve on the first season's episodes while sticking to Rumiko's manga origin stories for the characters, but when they get to the later episodes, sticking to the mere manga is too much of a handicap.

    Nice video. Ryuu did get to where a dress in the original anime so fingers crossed she gets to again here. I hope they keep the anime original episode where Benten and Ryuu met and if we're talking about changes/things that I would do, I would have another Benten and Ryuu episode where it follows up on fake love confession from their feminity contest episodes (where in the anime Benten knew Ryuu was a girl and while shocked at first, was perfectly fine going out with Ryuu). Basically have it where it heavily implies Benten will pursue a romance with Ryuu (give enough context so that it is easy to assume they end up together post series while keeping with Ruminko's "not showing kisses" type deal)

      Ryuu and Benten actually met in the manga. In fact, Ryuu initially disapproved of Benten because her tomboyish behavior was anathema to Ryuu's idealized view of girls as sweet, delicate angels, due to her own yearning to be feminine. Whilst Benten was initially implied to be somewhat interested in the idea that Ryuu had a crush on her, that was only while she thought Ryuu was a boy. Once she learned Ryuu was a crossdressing, super-tomboyish girl, she was very annoyed with Ryuu due to her hypocritical behavior. They didn't become friends until after they bonded beating up various idiots at Tomobiki in one of the principal's dumber schemes.

      @@MrNetWraith Oh, I know that. I was just saying in the anime version Benten already knew Ryuu was a girl so when she had interest in Ryuu's "confession".
