I think this newest episode did a pretty good job on adapting “How I Waited For You”. I was a little shocked that this chapter was being adapted midway through this season, but It was neat seeing this chapter being faithfully adapted while also adding some new scenes that make the ending a bit more impactful.

Love how they adapted "How I've Waited for You" in the newest episode. I think them adapting this early on is a sign that they're gonna be easing into more heartfelt stories. The way they're picking the stories is pretty good for recontextualizing such a huge series more naturally in the 23 episodes we get to have.

One of my favourite episodes of the original was "And then there was none"; I was a young teenager when I first saw that episode and it simply blew me away. The one with Ataru's mother having nightmares was also great and episode 107 with *that* scene between Ataru and Lum was truly special. I also love episode 134 with the voodoo doll, the hilarious extended bromance scene between Ataru and Mendo, who has been crushed by elephants just earlier, never gets old. Oh, and ep. 43 with the cursed lady cat on the roof was comedy gold too (with a special creepy backstory)!

The "And then there were none" episode has one of the fan-favorite out-of-nowhere Lum moments--As the group is entering the spooky mansion in the storm, Lum stares curiously at a pair of scary dinosaur statues; the gang calls for her to join them, she gives the statues a "Beehh!! 😝" and flies off. 😄

While I generally prefer the 80s anime right now, this new Urusei Yatsura definitely had a strong start and it can certainly improve. I'm not too keen on modern anime, but this is one series I will definitely follow.

I mean it's super nostalgic, even the animation style is following Takahashi's original manga artwork. I'm VERY impressed with this remake. I thought they were doing an update, like Lum & Ataru with mobile phones, but they're actually retelling the classic story from the beginning. Wow. Lum's shimmering hair makes her look more otherworldly.

@@Jumpoable The show actually takes place in the 80s like the original. They don't draw attention to it, like so many western shows set in the 80s, but you can see Ataru has cassettes and records. And yes, no one has cellphones. I like that bit of subtlety.
And agreed about Lum's hair. That shimmering effect they give it in different lighting really makes her stand out.

Episode 107 is the one that I want the most just for the last five minutes. Not to spread spoilers for the original, but I think Kitty films hit their peak when it came to that scene. So much is said with very little words, and it feels very bittersweet. You can tell that Lum didn’t even know if she was making the right choice. One of the original’s must watch episodes right behind the Christmas episode from season 1

Your No. 10 is one of my all-time favorites too. I find it hilarious that Oyuki expresses relief when SHE doesn't get harmed by Ran's schemes but ignores everyone else's condition. Somehow, the way her self-centeredness is presented is very funny.

Hopefully the rest of the 8 episodes will also be adapted in some way though I don't see Zodiac Go Round and Ataru vs Ataru being adapted at this point. There are just too many chapters to fit 46 episodes.

I really hope that the team behind this reboot gave themselves a little bit of breathing room to tell the stories their own way and possibly even tell new ones. I think a lot of the best moments that made the series more endearing to me was added by the team at Kitty Films. After reading the manga, it become much more clear to me how the studio gave more life in the relationship with Ataru and Lum which is the reason why I watched the anime. For instance, I found the way the characters behaved in 'Thrilling Summer Date' to be more amusing in the Anime because of the added content and slight adjustments made. Even how 'Pitter Patter Christmas Eve' changed 'How I Waited For You' I thought was for the better though I still enjoyed the reboots take on it.
As a question for anyone, what's your thoughts on them possibly remaking the Anime Original stories in the reboot? For some reason, I get a bad feeling about it, but there isn't any logic as to why it just feels wrong. Though if the did do so, I am sure it wouldn't be anything distasteful, so far there are so many small details in this reboot that show signs of love and respect for the source material and the OG Anime.

In my opinion, probably they'll just skip them. The creators already have too much stories from original manga. Of course, I'll be glad, if they give them a chance as well (especially 105-106, 107 and 143). But honestly, maybe this is a great chance for chapters that have never been adapted, or anime just borrowed a scene or two from them. For example, I would love to see not changed story of "Miss Tomobiki Contest" (chapters 186-190) in new anime, but it's hard to say if they'll try to do it.

    • @windswar

@@jonagoldemerald8704 Surely Miss Tomobiki is the worst adapted episode in the OG anime, and everybody would love to see that in the remake. But it's so long that they probably would need 2 or 3 episodes to cover it ! Chances are, it's not going to happen (unfortunately)

Other than the ones you listed, here's a few of my favourite episodes (I haven't read the manga yet) that I'd like to see in this new series:
-The episode when Ataru eats some of the food Ran made for Rei and Lum thinks he's been poisoned. So she has to go to that other world to get an antidote. There is a really powerful moment when Lum thinks she's too late to save Ataru.
-The two parter when Lum loses her memory and Mandou takes her to live at his estate. It was a showcase for one of my favourite characters, Megane, when he wears a proto-Keroberos Wolf Brigade armour (a little experimenting there, Oshii?)
-The episode where Ataru's class accidentally eats those magic mushrooms and they have some kind of weird talent show while hopped up. It is just so weird and funny.
-The episode when Benten and Ryounosuke team up. I just like both characters and I think they play well off each other.

At least two of the episodes on your list got animated in the remake series. Maybe you can help me with an episode from the original Kitty run. I recently had a random memory from the early 2000s involving a gag in one of the early episodes (somewhere within the first 50) Best I can remember is that some female character has to do something to Ataru (or Lum) for her Order, but she keeps failing. The gag comes when she encounters a walking talking Racoon-Bear who describes itself as such, then gets hit by the animal followed by "YOU FOOL" as it's revealed to be the leader of her Order monitoring her progress. I don't know if it was a Manga adaptation or an original Kitty story. Do you know which episode this is?

I have the distinct feeling this "kindler, gentler" 21st. cty version (for tamer 21st. cty network sensibilities) is NOT going to give us Jariten...Which they probably couldn't do without onscreen "Please do not hit real babies with frying pans" disclaimers. 🍳
Which means we won't get the Ten vs. Ataru episode, the manga-iconic "From the Gardenia with Love" episode, Ten's firefighter mama, or the one where Ten is pursued on Valentine's Day by the equally Lum-determined kindergartner Mako.
