      It's Arima Kana.

Very few authors, can simultaneously follow up a successful series say like love is war, and do another successful series like Oshi No Ko at the same time. Aka Akasaka is one of those few. Hell, he would draw and do a love is war chapter and write Oshi No Ko chapter within the same week. That's very rare. The only other person I could think of that did to successful series at the same time is Rumiko Takahashi putting out Urusei Yatsura each week and drawing Maison Ikkoku each month from 80 to 87.

Can we appreciate the way Mengo's artstyle elevated the series?
Also why does it feel like Mengo also had some input regarding the writing for the relationship dynamics between the characters. It reminded me so much of "Scum's Wish"s messy and twisted relationship dynamics in that series.

@@redpandaproductions i don't know, i know she has a major crush on aqua, and aqua likes her to some extent as well, however their chemestry never really felt like lovers but best friends. i just don't see this story ending with anyone happy. it's not that type of story. I also find it interesting that when aqua decides... to... trick himself... into believing.... well you know. that he doesn't break up with akane, and instead starts to date her for real despite his and kana's interest in eachother. in fact it's akane's choice to not tell him about there... um... lie he's telling himself that forms the only real wedge in their relationship, and prevents them from growing closer, as akane feels guilty about not correcting him, in fact when she gets the impression he might have figured it out; and in guilt for her lie, and fear for aqua's future, decides to pay back the life he saved by carrying out his revenge herself.
I actually think narritively speaking Akane fits the role of love interest better then kana does. because she's the only other character who really knows aqua, and what he's up to. he told her straight up what he was up to in an attempt to scare her off, and she was so ride or die, she told him "fuck that noise, I'll help you do it". I think that answer, while what aqua needed to hear (that he had an ally he could talk to) also is why he has tried to keep her at arms length as well, because he doesn't want her to get caught up in that stuff...

I have never seen this in any other reincarnation story but the way his knowledge of being a doctor in his past life, ended up playing a major part in his trauma regarding Ai's death.
Normally in reincarnation stories you see characters use the knowledge/skillset they had in their previous life to their advantage and gain fame and popularity and help them have a better life.
In Oshi no Ko, during Ai's death, despite knowing which part of her body she was severely bleeding out from, due to his past life knowledge, he was unable to put that skillset/knowledge to use to try and save another person he loved.
Just because he was a kid, he had to watch her slowly bleed to death and felt her body go cold as she hugged him.
This makes it more understandable when he blames himself for Ai's death later on as an adult.
Personally I don't want someone as broken and traumatised like Aqua to get into a relationship, considering how toxic it would be. I kind of would have liked it if there were less romance in the story and see him get healed/ some proper therapy after all this.

I want to give Aka a clap at making a “realistic” ,if you can call it that, approach to being reborn. The best qualities the twins have when reborn is “beauty” at best and their kept their memories. However, they don’t have cheat codes or op abilities. Ruby is enjoying her new abled body after living only 12 years prior suffering in a hospital room. But despite it she still had to work to be a amazing dancer but she lacks the singing talent no matter how hard she tries. And at times despite passing 12 in her new life she still acts like a naive and cheerful 12 year old at times. Meanwhile Aqua has a mind of an adult is shown as burden he can come of way too mature for his age that it’s noticeably uncomfortable about him that they hired him to act at 2 years old just because he talks like a 30 year old. It becomes more apparent like the video says that him being so grown up in his teens the way he approaches romance feels like he’s too mature about it. Which is why I love this series cause I don’t find enjoyment in reborn stories since they tend to be power fantasies and I get it you want to live through them but sometimes you don’t want to. You want to see 3 dimensional characters struggle sometimes. You want to cheer them on in over coming stuff and you feel frustrated when you. And that’s what so good about this series reborn stuff

Yup. The difference between Ruby and Aqua is their maturity when they are reborn. Aqua, having lived until his 30s in his past life, is a fully adult on the inside, while Ruby was only twelve when she's dead. Her staying in the hospital most of her life doesn't help either. So, unlike Aqua, Ruby's mental age is the same as her physical age. She's 100% a teenager inside and out.

Though I personally love Perfect Blue, I'd recommend Oshi no Ko to people first, for when I'm not sure if they're squeamish about horror art/media.
Though imo, I think they should also slowly start upping the ages of when people can become Idols too (it'll help with alleviating pressure/stress for many Idols that still need to grow and mature so that they can better handle the industry a bit).

Adding to the title: Not just Japan's but also for Korean Industry as well, (Kpop stars mainly) In Korean Industry, almost all "Oshi no Ko" dark situations are also very much common there. And some those idol groups, its common for idol as young as 16 years old to be part of idol industries. They started young and being trained. and the training is brutal as well. And since K-pop is the worldwide now, you can check all controversies and issues that are fairly recent and very easy to look up for resources and references.
For example, few idols has committed suicides, and all of them were closed friends (I won't give out a name, but I just hoping no more please)
There are few more Aqua&Ruby's "dad" similar stories, such as, There is one influencer that has been sleeping many girls, and also gaslighting them when those girls learned that he has been giving STD towards these girls, and he will continue to do so for the next victim. This guy used to be in alot host shows, has been doin charity talks, reality shows... He is young and very charismatic, with so many girl fans. Those victims were having hard times to expose him, since, majority of k-fans were defending him, (and his PR team made it worst too), so they used legal way to handle this issue. This case might took awhile to be settled, but the guy finally landed in jail. This is not the first time things happened, and there are many more stories, some worst and creepy.
For stalkers: Sasaeng fan 사생팬 You can check the interview of one of them in RUclips.
For "purity": And yeah all those big names k-idol groups, have a contract on NOT to date anyone. So for those who has been exposed for dating, basically mean they are also breaking the contract, which mean, is really a big problem. and they usually being adviced to do media conferences just to apologize that they are dating (Notes: They have huge issues with bullies and cyberbullies, so you can already guess what happened next)
Of course, every entertainment industry have their own ugly dark sides of its truth: Streamers, Vtubers, heck, even in Hollywoods too.
Korean industries are just one of them.
But since they are the top no.1 worldwide popular now, these facts are just open secret, and many of similar cases that being mentioned in "Oshi no Ko" are fairly new and easy to look up for research (to see more reality of "Oshi no Ko", kpop world are just the easiest to find for real world case references (if you are willing to see more triggering stories)

It does while still juggling some great characters. The only reason this manga is pretty low on my top ones is because it gives a few too many exposition dumps. Regardless I am extremely excited for his next manga coming out next week.

    • @gnw_AstA
      @gnw_AstA Год назад +6

That's probably because when it comes to Eastern entertainment industry, it's more jarring because of the culture around it especially with how collectivist it can be, I mean you need not look further that the fan culture over there basically has them entitled to their idols, completely forgetting the fact they're just like the rest of us: human beings.
At least over there in the other side, people aren't entitled to their celebrities *as much* and discussions about their day to day life and whatnot is just that. People shit on a Kardashian then just move on with their day and vice versa lol. It's definitely more of a cultural thing than anything, but you're right that the entertainment industry's still pretty much a godawful place to be going into regardless of where it is.

Not that I like being “that person”, but I feel like clarification is important here. Overall, great video, but one minor mistake you made was referring to Oshi no Ko as an isekai. Isekai is a Japanese word meaning “another world”, and the term refers to stories that take place when the main character is transported to a world different from the one they are used to. This doesn’t happen in Oshi no Ko. It’s just a reincarnation story (among various other things), but it still takes place in one world that is representative of the real world.

Well, I just found out the whole reason the author killed Ai off was because he's couldn't figure out how to write the story around such a powerful character. While I get it, Ai seemed too perfect. I feel it. It could've worked.
I would've had Ai navigate the entertainment industry while shielding her children from the harsh realities of fame. All the while, she must also deal with the pressure of keeping up appearances and maintaining her image as a successful actor. The children face their own challenges as they try to break into the industry without revealing their true identities.
As the story progresses, the Ai could realizes that she can not keep her children hidden forever. She must make a choice between her career and her children's dreams. The climax of the story comes when she decides to reveal their identities to the world. It is a risky move that could either make or break their careers.

FFS, why would you not take advantage of your old life's medical training to become a child prodigy and Doogie Howser your way into a well-paying career in your teens? You'd have a heck of a lot more freedom of action and money to pursue this mystery you're trying to solve. You'd also wind up being as famous as any flash-in-the-pan pop star.
That's assuming you even came through your second infancy sane. Can you imagine the horror of spending years in a body whose nervous system isn't developed enough to give you control over your body functions? Can't walk, talk, and going by what puberty felt like I bet the rapid growth a baby goes through is a constant source of pain as your bones lengthen and tissues expand. An adult intelligence stuck in that situation would be looking at years in hell worse than any late-life decline.
If you don't want to explore that sort of thing in your story, don't put your character in that kind of situation. Find another way to handle your body-hopping instead of handwaving it away.

Oshi no Ko did a good job to portray the struggles of teen pregnancy. It wasn't all rainbow and happines for Ai. She struggled to make a living for herself and her children before getting famous, her ex-boyfriend didn't support her or the children in any way, and she ultimately died just because she choose to keep her kids. Even Ai was one of the lucky one. There are many, many teenage girls out there that weren't as fortunate as Ai that have big incomes & a support system that helped her to raise her children. I am also thankful I haven't touched this series since watching the PV & missed out on this toxic messy series completely, no matter how much buzz is out there. I thought it was interesting at first, but turns out is actually just another cringe story. Probably it would be better without that foolish reincarnation cliche
The messy life of celebrities, I have been fed up with them since years ago including the Japanese entertainment culture so the content of this series is no surprise to me on that part. The fanatics, scandals, the role of media, the system, the rules, the role in business, both sides of the curtain...probably everything at this point. I think the people involved in this kind of industry seriously need proper mental health treatment. So many problems, but there's no real problem solving and the people there turn those problems into another type of entertainment instead (like this one)🤦‍♀
Well, something popular is not as good as it seems. I agree about Kana and I am interested in the mangaka character there because I find him relatable, yet if I want this type of story, better I watch my usual true crime documentary series.
Thanks for the review anyway, it's time-saving.
