Wow, that ending on “what you should buy” is one of the best sections I’ve ever seen in an LMG video ever. That was incredibly detailed but really focused. Great stuff!
100% agree! Reviews forget to include a point on - who should buy it 😊
Yeah that's great because I had heard about this new model a week or two ago I don't know where, and how it was such a bang for the buck, but I thought that Sony probably had better options out there. Since I'm not a professional but I really appreciate photography as an activity on my trips and other important moments, I want the best product at the lowest cost, especially since in photo, you get drowned with additional purchases like lenses, batteries, and other stuff. So it's important to know the other options out there!
You can tell this review is being done by someone who REALLY knows what they're talking about and has plenty of experience with the entire product category and all the competition in the segment. That's an issue I've always had with LMG in certain product categories, like laptops. They only care about high end 13" thin and lights and compare everything to that. Some of us actually prefer bigger screen laptops with a bit more power and battery life.
Brandon also knows his shit when it comes to cameras but I feel like he lacks the confidence to really tell people what's good for them. He mostly just sticks to the facts.
It feels weird to have a camera video without Brandon, but I don’t mind David taking over them at all.
X2
Yeah... I was wondering why Brandon isn't reviewing this then I remembered
Funny thing is I've come to associate David so much with other things I had to go "oh yeah, he's a shooter too".
No hate to Brandon he's good. David is really good on camera so I'm not complaing about him taking over
Did Brandon leave ? Did I miss something ?
At $2200, the overheating issues are going to leave this camera dead in the water for most vloggers, unless they only film in the winter and live in Canada/Finland/Norway/etc.
Unless you always need to keep filming in 60 rps and more. Most vloggers will shoot themselves at 24/30 fps most of the time
@@leonardw5487 The issue is the cool down time. Even if you go for 24fps, you're still only getting 1 legitimate record session in, because like David said, after he stopped recording, let it sit for a minute, then tried filming again, the record time was almost non-existent for the 2nd recording session.
That's a huge risk to take buying this camera and hoping that you don't need to do 2 extended recordings in somewhat quick succession. That makes it basically unusable at any "event" where things are happening constantly.
At least in the water it won't overheat! Or.. it probably would
Most of new phones will record longer with built in Fans and cooling add-ons.
@@leonardw5487 This camera will overheat in 24/30p as well. The real bottleneck is the bitrate. You'll have to shoot 8-bit 4:2:0 for longer recording times. Also Dan Watson got the camera to overheat while just menu browsing. The tiny body just has terrible thermal management.
Well, David, your sparkling personality during camera reviews is something the AI will never be able to take away from you.
Best comment by a longshot.
No.
🌈
Not yet!
I miss Brandon, but David is deffo a worthy successor
Where did he go?
@@Q_QQ_Q He left. 😮💨
Brandon as a presenter sucked and made camera videos hardly watchable. David is also all over the place, but much less frustrating overall.
Not even close. Sorry.
@@kaimelis what you've been watching. Lol.
I like that "budget" has a different meaning in the camera space. $2K is not "budget" nor affordable for me regardless of the features. 😭😂
Great, that’s you. For a working professional that’s on the low end.
@@09williamsa Which is ridiculous.
@@TheBlackSkimmer that’s your opinion, an ignorant one, but yours none the less.
You must be USican. The camera is $4000 CADw/lens.
@@09williamsa troll.
It'll take a little time, but with David taking it over ... it lands in a comfy place.
Make it your own David
I was really excited to hear about this because I thought it was going to be a reasonable upgrade to my ZV-E10... but then I saw the price
With that sensor and processor, there is no way to have the price lower honestly
What you talking bout? The price is a steal, it's basically a7s3 without viewfinder
@@adletkassym9600 but it's more expensive than a7c
Yeah, I was thinking this was a clear winner, but when I saw the price, there are a lot of competitive options. Better in some ways, worse than others.
A weakness for the Sony is a lack of good, affordable compact lenses with fast aperatures compared to some other systems. Nikon Z doesn't have the best cameras, but lenses like the little 40mm 1.8 full frame prime sure make it appealing if you haven't bought into another system.
same
when he said budget I thought it was gonna be like $600, nah it's 2 grand 💀
Even worst case scenario like $1,000 💀
april fools!!!
If you want budget, just use your phone. Dedicated cameras are basically enthusiast or pro level only it seems nowadays.
Budget seems to be the domain of Panasonic nowadays
@@Varocka except a7c is cheaper than this
Glad to see ShortCircuit is still overviewing some tech stuff, seeing how ltt main channel is switching to potato farming now 😂
just loved the content , lot of info and very well put up, never felt like a long video, shots added , the value of information added at the end part while summarizing was even better. worth every second of my watchtime. good luck for the next one.
Soft Skin Effect is NOT an AI feature. It uses face detection used for autofocus to track your face and blurs out the contrasting details on your skin. Does not affect lighting nor does it look good on everyone, yet is toggled on by default.
That was a great video. ZV-E1 looks very tempting... but one point that needs to be mentioned is that once you add a decent full frame lens onto it, the size + weight has just gone way up. Camera newbies need to be aware of that before they jump into the expensive (and heavy) world of full frame.
I love David! was stoked to see him in a non-mouse video, then I realized it's because Brandon left. Now I'm sad.
I just got the standard ZV-1 for about £500 and am super please with it. It’s a great starting out camera for me
New to the channel so David is all I know, and he's phenomenal. I have no need for this camera because I'm pretty much still image only, but I was captivated. My video needs are pretty much taken care of by my LG V60 in manual mode.
Then you'll do good not buying this little space heater. For 2000 bucks. Wth
14:54 little correction here: yes in theory not having a mechanical shutter does degrade image quality a bit. However, this sensor reads out so quickly that i never had any problems with rolling shutter, and the theoretical loss in dynamic range is also absolutely not noticeable. I mainly use my a7sIII for photography (i'm weird, i know) and i always shoot in silent mode and the results are amazing. Oh and 12mp are totally enough for 95% of usecases imo.
I love how fast he talks and how passionate about it is he :D
Awesome job, David! I hope you host more in the future :)
Great review- really appreciate the level of detail and overview of features.
This is an awesome camera. Also great that you mentioned the Canon R8, a kind of forgotten camera that has 4K 60p oversampled from 6K at just $1499. Between Sony, Panasonic and Canon we are getting insane full-frame cameras for the value.
The overheating issues are a dealbreaker for me
So hyped for this one, Sony has been doing a crazy job the last few years with cameras they seem to be leagues ahead for price. This may well be a no brainer option if you can get hold of one! Such a shame about the shutter though grrrr.
I really like the switch to go between Movie and S&Q instead of popping into another menu.
Zv line has been great, I'm a professional photographer and I use the zv1 for video (hand holding on the left hand) it's everything auto but smart auto you can trust the camera to be recording just fine, I'm really interested in this new zve1
This is a style of videos i like.
Put everything on the table and talk over all options / settings.
Hey, can you compare it to the A7C? Curious which one is better from your experience. Thanks!
Great energy and confidence from David 🙂
Is the 3.5 mm jack also usable for a microphone? like, if I want my camera 2 meters away from me and I have a microphone in front of me...can I use this 3.5 mm jack for that mic?
Ah love this. Excellent video, lots of great detail.
Budget line up.... 2500$+
😂
For those mentioning Brandon, he left LTT a bit ago. I also didn't know till I randomly saw a tweet of his.
I didn't know until the LTT April Fool's Video lol
@@NigelMelanisticSmith Same
Hi there! Great video!! However, regarding Temperature, can it be used as camera source to stream 2+ hours on 1080p or also will get knocked off ?
Those strap things what are they called? I use the strap the came with my camera and it's just so bad. So i would like to buy a new strap but one that can be used with those "clip-on" strap things, for ease of mounting it to my setup after use
I'm so glad they fixed that silly mode selection button and turned it into a 3-state switch. Huge improvement. I wish the camera would give you a warning if you start shooting video in "Camera Mode" too. I've done that a number of times and it kills the autofocus - you're standing there wondering why it won't stick to your face :(
What is the material from which the Sony ZV-E1 is made? Polycarbonate or metal (magnesium or aluminum)?
Definitely a great freaking camera. It won’t bleed into the fx6 or fx3 for client work ever in my opinion with its overheating issues.
For someone who’s been using an fx3 but didn’t *need* that body style or horsepower per say are going to love this. Heck I almost want it but I’m happy with my fx30!
Does it do focus bracketing/stacking?
11:45 why this camera have the same sensor as a7s3 but missing 4k120? Maybe sony try to segment by firmware limitation?
Nicely done.
I feel like temps will always be an issue with this camera.
Does it have that product placement fast zoom?
4K just doesnt seem reasonable as a default shooting size for the prosumer things I do. I'm curious if this has the heating issues to the same degree with 1080. Is it going to be stuck down to 15 minute chunks only at 1080?
Yep, the 1080p recording still reads out the entire sensor and downscales that recording. You might get a little more recording time since the file writing part of the image processor is handling less data, but not by much.
Same USB adapter to jam timecode? How come? this camera has microUSB port like FX-3? thank you for the beautiful in depht video
Can this be used as a webcam? Continous filming & streaming?
Yes, you can capture through HDMI or USB and you can get a dummy battery for charging or possibly charge it with USB, if your charger is beefy enough.
I think given the heat problems on the brand new out of the box model, there might be some serious longevity problems with the ZV-E1 (I guess folks will just have to wait and see).
Seems like an amazing all-around video camera.
will you guys do a Panasonic s5ii video?
David is such a good all rounder of a host, in terms of his interests and knowledge. Nice asset for LMG imo
am i trippin or are the descriptions in the video wrong? at 2:24 it says a7 iv, but im pretty sure the white camera is an a6000 series camera. and at 2:01 david talks about how its quite a bit larger than the zv-e10 and the video shows an a7 iv
Where is the recommended used lens market?
This camera doesn't appear to have apc mode does it?
Did you try dummy battery? to avoid heat?
David, you're good and you have your unique style of making videos. With that said, I still miss Brandon.
I am glad to see a full-frame vlog camera.
What about Olympus EM/Fuji X series or even Panasonic GX series?
The lack of good cooling is annoying on an otherwise great camera. Currently use a zv1 and the thermal shutdowns are absolutely annoying, so much so I'm looking at the fx30 as the upgrade instead of anything in the ZV line.
Overheating (even at mild temps) is the killer for me - gonna get me a Panasonic S5mkII..
@@salat the s5 is quite tempting too, I'm a simp for Sony and at home in their ui but may look more into the Panasonic.
ZV-E1 has more dedicated features for vloggers who will shoot themselves at 24/30 fps most of the time. S5ii loses auto focus at 6k and HD 120 fps and there is warping /jello at the sides during active stabilisation.
Thank you for reviewing this and explain it to layman terms
I mean, full sensor aside... how's this compared to an A6400? Got one a while ago and I was thinking of switching maybe to this one if the differences were enough to justify it.
Nice mech keyboard! Details?
I assume all HDMI out options have a clean hdmi out so they could be used to streaming etc.
What is a prosesor?
Hello, very nice video! I have two questions about your camera, the Sony ZV-E1:
What about overheating at 4K 120 fps?
What is the risk of only having one SD card slot? Could the video be lost if there is a card error and you don't have a copy?
Do you recommend this camera for professional Videography? I would be grateful for your answers as an experienced person with this camera.
Can it record 1080 24fps for 90 minutes?
Finally all these new cameras are slowly introducing all the features that my Samsung NX1 had 8 years ago. Sony is basically the only upgrade option for me feature wise.
How is this different from an A7C?
I don't know much of anything about cameras, but if it's mainly being used for video and heat is an issue, then they should make the processor unit be a separate, attachable device (via cable) with active cooling, so you're not limited to just 15 or 30 mins or whatever of recording time before it overheats. Plus it would be cool to be able to upgrade just the processing unit every few years. I mean, it seems at this point cameras are making more strides in the electronics/processing than the actual camera hardware (lens, sensor, shutter, etc) from generation to generation anyways, so why not? They could still keep the necessary hardware inside it for video/photo for portability. Maybe I'm just off my rocker but it seems like something they could do
I miss David on movie podcast and miss Brandon for cameras. David did good, very in depth
50 watts for a camera seems like an insane amount of power for it to be using constantly. What does it use it for?
I’m confused with the placement of their new cameras tho. Why go for the FX series when the ZV series exist? Of course I get the amount of buttons available for the FX series but thats about it for the differences.
This was a fun review 😊
quite professional explanation for tech quicky
What SD card?
I feel shortcircuit should be doing unboxing of the latest April fool's gear from lttstore
Hell yeah David! Nice one.
Why don't companies put small heatsinks on the sensors/cpus on their video focused cameras
LongCircuit with David... *click* NOICE!
I wonder if you could just stick one of those phone coolers to the back to improve the recording time, especially in summer
At 2:22, it looks like you mislabeled the ZV-E10 as the A7IV. Just a heads up!
I want a ZV-10 successor; the thing I loved it had the power-zoom toggle, but the video quality and video options out of that camera was not on par with what I would expect from Sony. Would love to build an APS-C amateur rig around the PZ 18-105 f4 lens.
U should have done ur research before buying, ur camera uses the old sensor half a decade ago. Only apsc sony camera that has a new sensor is the fx30
@@MonicaHolly143 Haven't bought it because of the image quality. But the point is, the A6400 has better video quality than the ZV-E10, which is disapointing for a video-centric camera. That was my point.
@@Wistbacka I'm not sure how the 6400 has better image qual than the ZV-E10, given both are sensored the same, and share processors.
@@Wistbacka both lf those have the same sensor hahahaha u just prove u dont really know about this cameras
@@POVwithRC Different software processing. Just look at a side by side comparison. This happens all the time in tech and an artificial way for companies to further distinguish products from one another.
Nice reference to They Live.
i legit thought fx3 was insane for how tiny it is and powerful. Did not expect it to be beaten this bad
Does this camera have the capability to output to HDMI?
Ope- thought it was just the USB-C. Now I see the micro HDMI.
So when is linus water cooling it?
I'm sorry did you said it uses 50w while recording?
I was expecting an April Fools camera review, lol. Wow this is actually a pretty cool product.
Love the jazz in the backgrund :)
yes! give us more David!
Take a shot every time David says "this bad boy" ;)
Seriously, very drool-worthy little camera!
I’m just in love with my Panasonic GH5 II, I was looking for a secondary camera just in case but the price for this one just cuts me out. I would’ve loved it if it was at 1500$
At one point you say it's the same sensor as the A7SII and at another point you say it is the same sensor as the A7SIII, which generation is it the same as?
Maaannn I got the A7c like 6 months ago. Awesome camera but this would have been perfect.
I feel the same way lol
me carrying strobes , soft boxes with Nikon and the other guy chilling with a Sony in his sling bag "lemme cry "
The troll doll camera. I can get behind that.
Great great video David
It's nice to know not every product from every company is a race to the bottom. And actually Sony does a pretty good job with most of its notable consumer electronics. Playstation, TVs, cameras, and headphones are all categories that Sony absolutely kills it in.
Hey linus
Make a video where you add cooling to this camera -
- make a threaded negative to the back of the camera ( behind the screen) with a thermal transfer plate attached to the processor
- {to take the heat from the processor to the back of the camera }
- make a small heatsink that can thread into this negative with active cooling
- When you want to record long, flip out the screen and thread in this cooler
- since the transfer plate is in the thread, it won't affect the monitor if you decided to use the camera without the active cooler
This could be a really nice video and you'll get to use a lot of your fancy tools
Please do it ✌🏽
I would have prefered a sequel to the ZV-1. A full frame point and shoot would have been a true game changer
Or a new rx1r model, that would have been sweet
I hope they update the ZV-1 with a much wider lens. Something like an 18-50 or 16-35.
Point and shoot full frame is the most brainless idea i ever heard
@@MonicaHolly143 Think Leica might argue that point, the Q2 is doing good trade
@@MonicaHolly143Could you explain why?. Why not make it easier to get people into photography?. I own an a7iii and do everything manually (other than autofocus) but have zero problem with others wanting to get into the hobby and have an easier time. Sure maybe they might not take as good images as someone that understands their camera but if they're happy with the results then great.
ZV-E1 and ZV-E10. That’s not confusing at all…
I hope sony will fix the sound issue in fx3 in future updates
Is there any modding community for high end pocket cameras like this? Like heatsinks, active cooling and such? New content for Linus Tech Tips. Liquid cooled or vapor chamber cooled Sony ZV-E1 for extended max bitrate shooting.
Choose the fx series for active cooling
Unfortunately you're not talking about computers here. The internals of cameras are much more fragile, taking them apart can be difficult, and you can't really usefully cool a lot of modern cameras from the outside. If you absolutely need better recording times, you gotta spend the money for a better designed camera.
As a camcorder user I would love to see sony put this sort of sensor and features into a camera with the form factor and optical image stabilisation of the AX53. That would be my dream camera.
