Type A fits in the same size slot as an SD card and makes more sense as you can use the same cards from your a7siii (and maybe an a6600 successor in future) all the way up to the fx9. They're fast enough for any sensible use case anyway
The FX6 is an exciting camera, but I think the a7S III is more exciting. I doubt Sony have improved the quality of their LCD screen, and I still think it's important to have a proper viewfinder.

@@matthews8580 as much as I love seeing others on the show I still enjoy having linus being there and hosting some stuff but I think it great that he's built his company so it's not completely dependent on him
The new card IS SMALLER, but how small does it really need to be? I mean, the camera needs to be a certain size to easily fit in your handy anyway right? Is there really an issue with the 'old' SD memory card size causing manufacturers to compromise on making their cameras larger?
The new cards are built up from a newer standard of file format processing, so will end up being much faster then SD. Consider the amount of types of SD cards, its about time we had a new standard for these. SD cards were originally 32/64MB.
No, it is not. Sony chose type a, which is smallest form to allow for cfexpress/sd combo slot, which is unique to sony(for exaple for canon r5 you have one sd and one type b slot). Camera sizes are more constrained with buttons, lens mounts, ergonomics etc, not card sizes.
Speed and heat, SDcard can be really fast but it's generating too much heat, CFexpress type A is more efficient and moreover still on early stage which mean it's still has more potential down the line in the future whereas SDcard already hit the upper ceiling. This camera and the a7siii actually can use SDcard without compromise. You just can't shot with all-i codec which is not necessary at all.
Smaller = more space for PCBs etc in the body, so from manufacturer perspective smaller is preferred. Makes the camera build cheaper and better. From a user perspective, larger cards are better because they are sturdier and harder to misplace. Presuming SD cards never will be a true competitor to NVMe/PCIe storage, you probably will move away from SD cards in the future. That 100MB/s per UHS bus (double on buses on UHS-II) is a big limitation for the future. That said SD card competitors like CF has been a mess going from CF to CFast to CFExpress A/B/C; you basically have had 4-5 open standards alternatives to SD cards, with very limited utilization. Where SD cards has remained same/similar, the “pro” CF line change protocols way to often. Expensive/annoying.
The use of CF Type A is because the a7S3 also uses Type A (for size considerations). That way someone can use both SD or CFE Type A across those two cameras.
Any update on how the Ursa Mini 12k is working for you all? I'm VERY curious to see a workflow video with that camera or even an updated Davinci Resolve/Adobe Premiere battle using the Ursa 12k footage and how much better or worse it is than the R3D files you all normally work with.

CF Type A makes a lot of sense for this, because it will be paired with A7 S III in lot of scenarios which uses same cards... S III doesn't have space on it for Type B... It would be cool to see on next FX9 or FS cameras dual slot, but not CF A and SD like this has, but combined CF A and CF B if it's possible... so you could either use big cards like on other cameras, or small ones you use on this and in mirrorless

The sensor on fx6 does not have the green tint like it was on the a7s3 so they might use a better batch of the same sensor on fx6 and the rest for a7s3.

Great job once again ! ;)
more proprietary media?? black magic lets me use standard SSD's. why on earth would anybody still be falling for this in 2020?
nothing proprietary about cfexpress. just uncommon standard. like back then when professional cameras used compact flash instead of sdcards. oooh waiiit, this is professional camera, which also accept both sdcard and cfexpress standard. which makes these kind of complaint really sound whiny.
@@anony_meows name one other camera that uses cfast-E type A
Someone's gotta be first.
@@fuzzjunky doesn't matter, he's right. It's not propietery. If other flash memory vendor want a share o f the market, they xan go ahead and and do that and Sony has no voice dictating if other can enter the market and how much they should charge
@@fuzzjunky a7s III. uncommon doesn't mean it's proprietary. also it's cfexpress, not cfast, and the type B is already everywhere. the type A is just a variant with compact size, granted it's new so, very uncommon.
Isn't the a7s3 a 3:2 12MP and the FX6 is a DCI 10MP? Can you confirm the physical aspect ratio of the sensor?
Brandon and Anthony make this channel great
Brandon's hair looks good the way it is in this shoot. Hate to be rude, but I recommend he keep it this way
I love Brandon videos. He doesn't tell a lot of jokes and that's sometimes refreshing.
He should be given others gadgets too
So we could see his review i think that would be great

It might be the same sensor, but that doesn't mean it's the same ADCs or image processors (not the main one, the smaller ones).
I took automatically recorded audio for granted, with the 120/240 Hz settings, in my Sony FDR x3000.
This is literally a HUGE reason why I lean towards Sony. ...do I want to record audio separately, and match it up, or do I just want the recorded audio already matched up?
The sensor on fx6 does not have the green tint like it was on the a7s3 so they might use a better batch of the same sensor on fx6 and the rest for a7s3.
The test shots look amazing. :O
There's three types of CF-Express. Type A,B and C. They all use PCIe Gen3 interfaces with 1, 2 and 4 lanes respectively. beefy.
yep and nothing proprietary about them.
Not sure why Sony felt the need for Type A rather than the bigger & faster B or C. I guess they're quick enough for the camera.
@@definedphotography the physical size is bigger
And there's no point to use faster storage when it's enough
The videos at the end are so surreal
Dave2D: Releases their macbook pro review
ShortCircuit: Cameras.
@starshipeleven the benchmarks + the huge deal ARM chips catching on is
@starshipeleven iPad don't have 8 cpu cores.
@starshipeleven Crappy? It's more power efficient, and that still adds up to 8 cores. Plus, their iPad smokes most x86 laptops.
@starshipeleven alright, fair enough.
I don't know anything about cameras, and yet here I am, watching an unboxing of a camera I will never own.
Is it possible to use the full bitrate with type A storage and also have a SD card to store it after recording? So using the type A as a buffer
no, but afaik you can just use 2 CF A and record on both of them at once
@ that would mean for a longer shoot that you have to buy a lot of type A storage witch is a lot more expensive 😅
@@HaroldKuilman a lot more expensive at the moment, check how much XQD cards went for when it was brand new, or CFast...
@ I don't expect type A to follow the normal pricing for storage as it is sony only for now, SD cards are almost free now a days. Bought a SanDisk extreme 128GB V30 microSDXC (90MB/s write) for only 23,49 euro today. I expect type A to have a "sony-tax" for the entire time this camera is relevant...
@@HaroldKuilman yeah, but V30 is incredibly slow, you can always take out that CF and drop data to laptop or cloud... I don't expect cameras to have this feature ever
What a beast the FX6 💪🏼😉 🎥 really cool review and awesome footage 😀 i think this could be my new cam 👍🏻
So, when are you going to watercool it?
when is the watercooled version of this camera coming out?
Hiding menu options actually causes more (new) user confusion, especially when there are mode differences that aren't apparent.
