Another notable projection to consider is Goode homolosine. This one was quite popular in the 60's. It's equal area, and retrains good continent shapes by sacrificing the shapes of oceans, which most folks find less troublesome than misshapen continents.
I just looked this up, and, if a map projection could ever be associated with a historical era, it screams 60's! I immediately visualized it in a Pan Am airlines brochure or lit up on the wall of a Bond villain's lair.

4:10 I think a right answer is to have at least two maps with different projections in classrooms, so that the students are constantly reminded that no single projection onto a flat surface is "correct", and that they all have different priorities about which distortions they are willing to accept. (As well as whatever the given projections happen to be good at rendering).
…because no map is wrong, and no map is right, but all map is map!
I think a right answer is to have a nice big globe in every classroom.

I watched the whole ad... well done!! You guys rock!
2:25 According to this logic, I think I know the answer. The sides of the map will be more squished, and the center will be a bit bigger. But if you think about it the two sides are actually really close to each other, because the flat map is 2× stretchier than a globe, so it likes to show everything at once. The globe has many different angles to look at.

Nobody Going To Talk About How Mark Managed To Spin That Globe So It Matched Its Original Position?
That wasn’t on purpose, it was a remarkable fluke
mygod. after finding out their voices are switched in the advert, the comments in the video, then this? Is there any hidden details that are still hiding? I think we have the best episode lol
I have a feeling that may be a design of that globe. It seems to brake suddenly when it hits that position, implying that the globe may have a mechanism that brakes it a certain angles of rotation. Still a fluke to hit the exact same one, obviously, but also a design of the globe, probably to keep it from spinning at low speeds.
@@JayForeman I guarantee that was on purpose.

Slight correction: A straight line on a Mercator map isn't a straight line on the earth, Mercator's advantage is that the angles are preserved at any given point. For example, two lines meeting at a 30 degree angle IRL would be at a 30 degree angle on Mercator. This only works at points though, if you draw a line on a globe and project it onto a Mercator it will be curved.
Stereographic projection is also angle preserving. Why don't we use that?
@@Anonymous-df8it Because it's even worse. Not only does it distort shape massively, but it literally can't show the whole surface of the earth
@@Jacob-yg7lz The same problem occurs in Mercator. The north and south poles are at infinity, so we just chop them off! Why can't we do that in stereographic projection?
@@Anonymous-df8it Because the map literally becomes way too big if you include anything at above/below a certain line of longitude. Seriously, look up stareoscopic projections, you won't see any that don't have entire continents cut in half.
@@Jacob-yg7lz You mean latitude. And, in the Mercator projection, you're not going to find one that doesn't have the poles chopped off (and everything above 85 degrees latitude, I think!)

No, it is definitely racist. It’s just not intentionally so. As the video says.
if it's not intentional, it's not racist.
I don't see how inaccurate geography can be 'racist'. The size of a country has nothing to do with value of the people that live there.
It didn't start off racist, but it certainly made racists very happy.
@@alexis_electronic "Wow im a racist im so happy this map wrongly shows my country to be bigger than it really is"...ye no, no racist people thinks the mercator projection has anything to do with race, its just a map
