    Just finished rebuilding my old 6v starter and replaced the flywheel ring gear, torque tube bushing, u-joint, pressure plate, clutch, throw out bearing, and pilot bearing on my 54 261 3100. Was able to get it all done without removing the bell housing. I absolutely could not have done it without all of your videos. You saved me tons of money and headache. You’ve got a friend in Chicago.

Took a stroll down the street a couple blocks, thought about going to the aquarium or something but decided not to chance missing my train back to Kansas....Not a great story, but I guess I can say I've been there! lol

    I don't routinely resurface the flywheel either. What I DON'T ever EVER do though is 1) Try to drive the bell housing in place and trying to draw it into place by tightening the bolts without first making sure that the holes for the pilot studs are clear, and that there is nothing in the way of the bell housing properly seating. Scratch that if this is your own car and you know that this is just the way it is. 2) Try to drive the transmission in place without, again, first making sure that everything is A-OK. Ignoring these two points can result in a bell housing or a trans not being squarely seated in place. 3) Never EVER let the transmission hang by the input shaft. Ever. I realize this trans is much lighter than the heavy duty unit in my truck, but still. That is a good way to spring the pressure plate and even bend the input shaft. What I do is put to guide pins in the holes for the two upper transmission-to-bell housing bolts and slide the transmission in place along those two guide pins. They also will support the weight of the trans, so the input shaft will not get bent, the pressure place will not get sprung.

    I never have been able to find a high-quality pilot bushing puller. I used to have this tapered stud with a grease fitting on the end. I would screw it into the pilot bushing and pump the cavity in back of it with my grease gun. That would force the old pilot out.

    Good instructive video. I am attaching a flywheel from underneath (engine [216] is in the car and bell housing installed). I am having trouble attaching the flywheel to the end of the crank. Are the studs on the end of the flywheel equally spaced? Having trouble lining everything up and getting bolts started. Have used awls to line up holes in flywheel with threaded holes at end of crank, but not successfully. Advice? Wished I would have put this together on the bench instead from in the car.

      I'm blessed with a heated parts washer at work so I usually scrape all of the big chunks off and then throw them in there. Degreaser and a regular pressure washer works great as well. Then depending on what it is I will media blast it with coal slag (TSC) or use wire wheels or a needle gun to finish.

    Hi the input shaft seems very tight in the bushing when pushing on the gearbox do you think this could be an issue. I'm doing the work in my car with a hole in the floor and I'm worried I case the bushing is damaged? I noticed some mushrooming on the inner edge which I removed with a file. I'm in the UK so it's very hard to get another one.

    • @TheJayhawker
      @TheJayhawker  2 года назад +1

      I wouldn't do it if it feels like a "press fit" and the only way you can get it all the way in is to use the bell housing bolts to force it in. However, if it just feels tight going in by hand but you can get the transmission to mate up with the bell housing then you should be fine. Check out the input shaft for burrs as well and polish it up with some emery cloth or sandpaper.

  • @camino6431
    @camino6431 3 года назад +1

    I also wanted to ask you why you didn't use a reamer to open the dowel holes and make the bell housing fit easier? Second, how are you ever going to get that bell housing back off if you ever need to? And finally, for now, why did not draw the bolts in evenly when you tightened the bolts? It looks a lot like you got the bell housing crooked while you were installing it. Maybe I am too picky about working on those dog gone old cars, but I like easy install and removal. Good video series, I do like the work that you do.

    • @TheJayhawker
      @TheJayhawker  3 года назад +1

      Great questions! This was an earlier video of mine and perhaps I didn't get enough detail into it. However, no matter what I'm working on, I always start all my hardware and then tighten them all down. I realize I showed running bolts in one at a time with a ratchet in this one but nonetheless I didn't tighten them down. Secondly I personally would not ream the dowel holes because the engineers wanted them there to precisely index the block to the transmission. Perhaps it's not as critical on these old dogs with a separate clutch housing but I find it hard to believe Chevrolet would have paid for the machining if they didn't find it necessary. But I certainly agree, it would be much easier! Thanks for watching.

    • @TheJayhawker
      @TheJayhawker  3 года назад +3

      Yes, in fact you cannot remove the bell housing as long as the clutch is installed. This is because the majority of the bell housing bolts that attach it to the block are up behind the flywheel. If you want to replace the clutch you will have to either pull the engine and replace the clutch out of the car. Or drop the front of the driveshaft, pull the transmission, and work on the clutch under the car.

    How do remove this bushing with bread?

    • @TheJayhawker
      @TheJayhawker  2 года назад +1

      the old "messy" trick is to stuff the bushing with grease and using hydraulics of hammering a close fitting rod or punch into the bushing, the grease will force the bushing out. Some have apparently accomplished this with bread instead of grease. Also, per your other comment, I made the alignment tool for centering the inline 6 timing cover. I am making some of these for sale and will hopefully get them on ebay soon. I will be sure to mention it in a video as soon as I do.
