House's morality here is almost entirely out of self interest, he saved her life because he wanted her to fix her last book. It's so transparent you kind of have to respect it.

This is a very underrated episode. It’s on my list of Top 10 House M.D. episodes. I always appreciate a two-sided mystery that is interconnected like this one. The medical mystery in tied in with the patient’s personal mystery and in the end House lies in order to cure this patient’s emotional trauma in the loss of her son.

What I find interesting is that House is largely based on Sherlock Holmes but obviously there are differences, Houses love for tv shows, books like this, monster trucks etc is one of those differences. Holmes literally had no interest in anything that wouldn’t help him in his work, he didn’t even know that the earth revolved around the sun and when Watson told him he basically said he would promptly forget it because he didn’t want to take up space in his head with useless information. He didn’t know anything about popular books or philosophy either but he did play the violin

Beyond that, lies rarely solve any issues and only make things worse down the road, the longer that lie is maintained. As painful as the truth can often be, at least it provides some sort of closure for everyone involved and for better or worse, allows them to move on.

Because real life doctors don't get to sit down and focus on a patient wholeheartedly like they do in shows. House spends days, weeks on finding the answer for a patient, talking to them, getting to know them. In real life there just aren't enough doctors to go around for that. It's little wonder they're not all that empathetic when they're bouncing through so many patients in a day, every day. After a while I'm sure the patients just feel like a task to complete rather than a person, when one has no room to breathe.
