Singers are entertainers. Songwriters are artists. That's why I will always prefer Dolly's versions of her own songs. Doesn't mean you have to, though. Whitney made the song iconic.
I saw Dolly perform live at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville a log time ago - AMAZING. She is also a GREAT human being- she's given millions to education and charities.
The Brilliance, of this song is the word LOVE can be translated into the different loves people have toward each other in many different ways, and this song supports all of those feelings, no matter who sings or hears it.
I first saw Dolly on the Porter Wagoner Show in 1967, I think, when I attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. I was a guitar player from Ft. Lauderdale who loved rock, blues, & Beatles, Stones. Porter didn't do anything for me. But Dolly did and still does. She has always has been a true colossal talent, and a very sweet soul. Thank you Dolly for your wonderful music that has touched so many 💕.
It is possible to love both versions, Whitney Houston had an unbelievable voice and dolly had such an original, raw talent for writing and singing, respect to both
I believe the person who writes the song always sings it best because they are the one's who feel an emotional connection to that song. Whitney sang it well, but it doesn't come close to Dolly.
I hear the emotion and tears in her voice. I just cant. I've never felt this way. she gets in my deeppppppp soul when I hear her sing this. she's just so authentic. it's her song, her emotions, her words. Ugh.
***** You're welcome, Nu. People often ask me who's version is better and for me, it depends on the time of day. Whitney and Dolly each bring a special «umph» to the table, so to speak.
This is great Terry. I didn't know any of that about her. I grew up with her music. My grandparents were huge fans of her. I feel like I am 10 years old again.
John Palmer Well, Mr Music, so many folks in the Country Music world are upset that Whitney gets all the credit and some people don't know that Dolly composed this song. Dolly brings a tender pathos to it. Whitney with her once magnificent voice before the drugs and her life with Bobby destroyed it, adorned it with operatic pyrotechnics. As I had said to Nu, each woman brings her specialty to the table. I like both versions, but I wanted Dolly Parton to receive her due as the originator of the song.
Terry Westbrook-Lienert I totally agree. Whitney's version was so huge that it has almost completely left the original largely forgotten. The percentage of the population of music lovers that even know that this was a Dolly Parton gem long before Whitney is probably fractional at best. Thank you for doing your part to remind everyone of the beautiful original as well as the beautiful re-imagining of the second incarnation of this tune.
Oh My God, Dolly Parton lovers knew that the song belonged to her. my mom is a fan, had cassettes and everything and back then I did not understand and now I do and feel it. She wrote this song same day as Jolene. what a heartfelt moment!
Her voice is so cute and angelic, breathtakingly beautiful. Whitney (R.I.P) was good, but this is how it should be sung, it touches your feelings in your heart much more. Just connects and pulls on every emotional heartstring.
Whitney's cover is like a declaration to the world. Dolly's version is like a whisper of love into your ear.

Dammit... every single time I hear Dolly sing I end up sobbing. Nobody can sing and write like she does.
Dolly is a special lady who touched the hearts of millions even in downtown Africa. ❤❤❤
Dolly was my father's favorite singer and this is the version we played at his funeral on a loop with Elvis old rugged cross & amazing Grace and we all felt dad singing it with her❤️
Hello Shawn
Hello Shawne.....💝😃😃
Hello Shawne your smile is priceless😊
Her personality is what gives this song its soul.
I can't believe I shed tears listening to her singing this song, and at the same time thinking of my late dad and my late mother-in-law who just passed on. God bless your soul Dolly
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
She has the voice of an angel!
That is true
She is the only Star I know to be married only once and is still staying strong with her marriage. How I wish we have a Dolly in our lives.
i agree!!!!!!!!!!
She and Loretta Lynn were married only once. And they're both fantastic people on a lot more ways than just singing. I can't get enough of either one of these two!
Thanks. Y'day it's her birthday

Dolly Forever! She is my all time favorite. I've been to Dollywood many times. I was VERY lucky that one of the times I went, she was there! She has apartment over a theme store there. She came out and talked and sang. I was right up front! I saw her up close! She is absolutely stunning!!
Beautiful comment, hi there how are you doing?
Hello beautiful how are you doing today 👋🤗🤗😁
Awesome story about this song. Dolly we will always love you! Pure & honest legend!
I must have heard her do this a million times-- but this is by far the most intimate, tear-jerking version EVER... LOVE you Miss Dolly... :)
Whitney Houston brought power to this song. But when Miss Dolly sings it, I just burst into tears. She gets to my heart. I love her. 😭🙏🙏🙏💖💖💖
Hello Catherine, how's your day going. It will be nice hearing from you .

Hello Catherine how are you doing!!
@Dolly Parton you're the best, God bless you. 🙏🙏🙏💖💖💖
Oh my god I've never heard dolly's version before. Always so used to whitneys but oh my goodness tears came into my eyes as soon as she started so softly. So much emotion ❤️
Nothing like hearing Dolly Parton sing this. She wrote it and there is no substitute for her voice singing it.
I think Dolly Parton is one of the most admirable and worthy persons that has ever walked this planet. She is wonderful, and we have been so lucky to have her.
Thank you, dear lady. Thank you.
This song tears my heart out. I can't hear it... without breaking down into tears. Anyone who has ever loved a woman in an impossible situation will identify with every word of this song. Thank you Dolly for setting some of the most painful moments of my life to words and music.
❤❤❤
When I hear this song it always reminds me of my dear wife who passed away.
So sorry for your loss
@@7song770 Why anonymous ?
Sorry for your Loss Sir.
Jeg er så lei for det, men i det siste minner dette deg om din kone
Wasn't ever married but this song reminds me of my son's mom who passed away right after he was born. Sometimes it's nice to remember. This song does that for me. Sorry for your loss sir
This is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written..
Kudos my role model ! You took the right decision Dolly, not everyone have the opportunity in finding there purpose in life, you are a woman that knows what you want, load's of Dolly.
I started crying listening to this...Sometimes when you feel like giving up a song like this just really tears you apart. Love Dolly Parton, every single thing about her. Such a beautiful human being...
Hello Cynthia
Hello Cynthia
Hello Cynthia.... 💝😃😃
Hello Cynthia how are you doing;!
Hello Cynthia
The writer of this brilliant song, the sweetest version with her wonderful voice. Love this so much xxx
So sad that the brilliance of Whitney singing this is that we lost her xxx
Hello Christine ..
Thank you Dolly, you have saved me with this song. I was SO alone when I was a child, you sang this song " to me" on tv - you sang it to me. You have helped me with many songs after that. I WILL always love you for that.
I've always loved Dolly because my now passed Gramp and Gram played her all the time. Her version came on the radio when I was driving with my dad and I was crying. So beautiful
This is one of the most beautiful singing at all times, beautiful voice and beautiful song, she wowed.
I actually love Dolly's version so calming and supportive. 😢❤
dollys version is humble and soothing whitneys version stays having me in my feelings lol they are both talented and beautiful !!
Miss Dolly, you are the most beautiful person I have never met. May GOD continue to Bless you. Keep doing what you're doing.
Dollys voice is so pure and humbling. The guitar playing was beautiful.
I'm a hip hop guy but I so appreciate Miss Dolly for giving us this smash hit!!
The explanation of how this song came about makes it all make sense. I love this song.
Natural and simple; bringing out what the message stands for. Great art, Dolly.
@leonard, Many thanks for your perceptive comment. Very well said. Indeed, Dolly is a special lady. All best wishes..
@@BeauDare-ov7py Thanks my dear.
@@ophokeleonard5036 My pleasure. I had the good fortune to work with Dolly Parton as an actor in Hollywood, on her TV show, "Dolly", and she was a joy to behold. A very sweet, genuine lady. They don't make entertainers like her anymore. All best.
Singers are entertainers. Songwriters are artists. That's why I will always prefer Dolly's versions of her own songs. Doesn't mean you have to, though. Whitney made the song iconic.
This is how i usually explain my love for this song to my friends. Dolly will always be the first in my heart ;)
*Country music is simply the best...love it so much and blessings to all that read this.👍✨😘*
Have you ever thought what the world do without the songs of the 60's? Just a beautiful song I think everyone can relate to this song.
Gary Bross this is a 70s song
I was so enchanted by the performance that it took me a moment to realize I was holding my breath. Dolly is such a storyteller.
It is possible to love both versions, Whitney Houston had an unbelievable voice and dolly had such an original, raw talent for writing and singing, respect to both
She is such a wonderful lady. She has been a gift to all of us, God bless her and always love her.
No one sings this song more beautifully than Dolly... I doubt anyone ever will.
true
um not true. Whitney
I agree. This song requires a soft touch and Dolly does it the very best.
+Frank Kononchuk right on. Whitney's vn. comes at me like a ton of lovely bricks but bricks they are
I believe the person who writes the song always sings it best because they are the one's who feel an emotional connection to that song. Whitney sang it well, but it doesn't come close to Dolly.
and I will always love this original version. Dolly is majestic!
I love that ppl are finally knowing who finally wrote & know the meaning of the song.
Thank you Dolly. You and Whitney were blessed. This song is and will be ONE OF THE GREATEST of ALL TIMES.
I hear the emotion and tears in her voice. I just cant. I've never felt this way. she gets in my deeppppppp soul when I hear her sing this. she's just so authentic. it's her song, her emotions, her words. Ugh.
wow knowing the back story completely changes my perspective of this version
forro dokakido
Every word is literally about her situation with Porter. Yes, the song 1000% has a different meaning now.
Makes me cry. So much emotion in this song and her voice. Thank you Dolly.
Meu Deus.
Que mulher maravilhosa.
Que voz ...
Que música linda ...
❤❤❤
After listening to this performance I trully realized the real meaning of the song. Bravo!
The composer singing her song and giving the history of it. Dolly Parton, the beautiful down to earth country girl.
Terry Westbrook-Lienert
I totally agree.
I Love Dolly Parton...she is honest and true to her words...
Hello Sean how are you doing!!
Her voice is so soft and such a unique tone.
Love dolly she’s pure and honest she’s the sweetest soul
Sure
Hello Angela, how are you doing?
Hello Angela your smile is priceless😊
Oh My God, Dolly Parton lovers knew that the song belonged to her. my mom is a fan, had cassettes and everything and back then I did not understand and now I do and feel it.
She wrote this song same day as Jolene.
what a heartfelt moment!
Her voice is so cute and angelic, breathtakingly beautiful. Whitney (R.I.P) was good, but this is how it should be sung, it touches your feelings in your heart much more. Just connects and pulls on every emotional heartstring.
I love Dolly. She is absolutely perfect! Her honesty and candor is so beautiful and exactly what we need.
