- Up Where We Belong by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes is the theme song for the 1982 film "An Officer and a Gentleman". It reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US that year. This music video adds some fighter jet scenes from Top Gun (1986) to accentuate the lyrics.
RIP, Lou Gossett. Your performance in this film encouraged me to return to the military for nine years, in the USAF and nine years in the USA. I retired 100% DAV. God Bless.
Thank you so much for your service to this country God bless

In Memory of the late, great Lou Gossett Jr. as well as the late Joe Cocker. Great movie. Great song.
My wife and I had this song played for our first dance on our wedding day October 03 2015, we were happy until cancer took her from me, April 23 , miss her incredibly fly with the angels until we meet again . thanks for sharing this beautiful song

Another song I'm going to have played on her memorial service , Kenny Rogers song Goodbye

Sorry for your loss.
My condolences, man.
I used this song in the slideshow presentation for the celebration of life for my husband of 41 years. He loved this movie and the acting of Gere and Winger. I hope he is smiling up in heaven.
My late husband passed away 7 years ago. I still miss him very much. He was a officer and a perfect gentleman 😢

I treated my wife like the queen she was. I lost her 8 days before Christmas 2020. I feel so alone. I miss you my love. Rest in peace 🙏. With love. Chuck

We are here for you
I am sorry to hear of your loss
Until you meet again.
My husband served in the Navy and the separations, war, injuries and just getting older, was hard but part of our lives. It's the love that lifted us up where we belong that has kept us in good stead. This beautiful song captures our relationship so well. 34 years though trials, tribulations, separations, but nothing keeps us truly apart. I love you, Jimmy. Always and Forever, your "Beautyfull" xo
what a lucky man you have.

You both will be remembered as legends
RIP Lou Gossett Jr. Thanks for it all.
Still can’t believe he’s gone. I was just thinking of him as Jeri in “Enemy Mine” and Will Reeves/Hooded Justice in “Watchmen”. He was superb and won’t ever be forgotten 😢💔

That's Wonderful My wife and I just passed 20 years of marriage and 23 years together. We don't even think about what would happen without the other! To tell you the truth as we are getting older we are scared of what will happen when the other passes!😓😥😥😥

I hope to be as lucky as you one day!
I saw this movie with my girlfriend the summer it came out. 1982. What a year. What a decade. What a movie. What a summer. The summer before my senior year in HS. That girl taught me a lot. It didn’t hurt that she was 3 years older. Thank you Denise. As hard as I’ve tried, I’ll never forget you.
brooks wade And the same year as Micahel Jackson released Thriller. The 80’s were something special, just a raw power of positivity. What happened between you and that girl?
What a great story but I gotta know what happened lol please tell us
Nice one, Brooks. You're a year or three older than me and probably on another continent, but you're from the same time and place as me and many others who felt the same and learned the same lessons in life. The youth of today might have begun to self-destruct, but we still have these gems to keep us dancing with the love of our life as we did when we were young.
This is what I love about youtube. We are able to glimpse back into the past and hear the past.
I was born in 1982 and I fondly remember my mom listening to Joe Cocker and loving this move because of her influence.
Thank you for your story.
I'll bet she did .......!!
Officer and gentleman, Top Gun, the 80s what a decade!!!!! So nostalgic of this time…😔😔😔
This was such a beautiful song from one of the best movies of the 80s. This song hit number one on the US Billboard in December of 1982 and stayed there for over a month. It peaked at number 23 for 1983. The 80s was quite the decade for TV, movies, music, the 80s had it all.
This song is by Sainte Marie
It was in november
November 6th, 1982 and stayed there for three weeks. :-)
Joe Cocker was a classic.
Onda su u Europi svi bili ludi za Amerikom, imala je nešto,a danas i Evropa i Amerika i bivši Socijalistički Istok, nekako unakaženi, nema poleta, snage, kao umiranje

Cocker's raspy intonation, Warnes sweet tonality. This song should not work but it does...flawlessly. A masterful lyric, percussion and musical accompaniment. One of the best love songs ever written.

Hello Valerie how are you doing hopefully all is well with you and your family’n
l agree with you, indeed Joe Cocker is a great and talented artist who's songs never goes out of style,he's one of my favorites artist, he's songs still and always heals the Soul, I pray God gives you lot of beautiful days🙏
I’m a 97 baby and still appreciate this and the entirety of the 80s for being one of the last great decades. Mastering is beautiful and performances thoughtful unlike today.
I saw this movie in 1991 when I was in high school. Then I enlisted in the army as a private. The commissioning was my favorite part of the movie. I dreamed of becoming an officer ever since a kid. In 1997, I swore to defend the Constitution as I received my Army commission. I was finally an officer and a gentleman.
WAY TO GO!!!!
Way to go, soldier ! Ride that wagon til the wheels fall off. I made the mistake of getting out and have always regretted it.
🆘 Hello 👋 Mother Father God are here to help make this world a better place please phone home we luvu so much it's been an ardous journey and this is an urgent message! 🆘 Mom
The purpose of the film & the music were programming. This is how the system mass produces it's slaves. And for the rest of their lives "most of" the thoughtless slaves won't even realize they are living a lie & have been betrayed since birth & used to betray others. Another one used & will be discarded.
Since I have no one to dedicate this song to, I dedicate it to you, whomever is reading this. 😍😍😍

Lord in Heaven; this might be the best song I’ve ever heard. I played it night and day when a wonderful man I loved and admired was dying from cancer. I cooked; I cried; I cleaned; I cried ; I did shopping; I cried; I went out; I cried; I loved; I cried; I prayed; I cried; I played it loudly; I cried. It got me through. Now my wonderful friend just died this morning and I will play this song and cry and cry until my tears dry up. Here’s to you, Martha, a beautiful soul. May you Rest In Peace. I love you now and forever. ❤💖❤️♥️💗💘💓♥️💕💖❤️💘💗♥️💕💖

This movie is about finding our way. What we want in life. I know that I found mine.. I went in Army.. I served over 26 years. I met the man... the soul who changed my life... and this movie DEFINES that. Most have NO clue...
It 's a beautiful song from a classic 1980's film. RIP to the gravely voiced Joe Cocker.

Heard this song a million times but I've never seen this movie. When the video first started I thought I was watching Top Gun and got very confused. I will definitely have to go back and check this flick out with my wife because she's a huge Richard Gere fan....
Thank you for this song ❤️ My Stepdad died when I was a teenager and this was one of his favorite songs. His name was "Scott" but we called him "Pudda" He died at 42 yrs old and I was supposed to see him 3 dys before he died but I let what shit get in the way. To this day when I hear this song I remember how much he loved us, and most of all how much he loved our "Mother". I miss him so much, and I miss the depth of "love" I saw in his " eyes" and "spirit" that he had for my "Mother" even if she couldn't. I know what "love" looks like.. That was a "MAN". RIP Louis Gossett, Jr. Reunited with Joe Cocker, who preceded him in death 10 years ago.
That song was remarkable because it explains the ups and downs in relationships and how we should overcome it to move forward.
Saw this when I was a kid in the 80's, I can still remember the review it had on " Film 82" and the buzz it generated . All the these years later, It is still magical.

Timeless love song. Still a good movie to watch on dvd. Damn... I still remember Beta tapes and rabbit-ears antenna. Cable boxes with a dial on front.
We have a home 10 minutes from, "FIGHTERTOWN U.S.A.". When our children were babies, I used to say that the sound of those jets were their, "lullaby". I often stood on the balcony , off the master bedroom, watching the jets dance at sundown. From the moment we arrived in the U.S.A., we realised that so many, especially new recruits, missed home, fun, good food & long calls to their families. So, as a victim of P.T.S.D. myself, we opened our home to naval & marine personnel. After dinner, they could join us on the beach for volleyball, watch a movie or just lie under the trees in the garden, at peace. We lost too many of them in the desert. Our hearts were broken & having lost too any close friends at home, we knew a little of how they felt.
Just wanted to say, that this song was our theme song for our graduation from Grade 12 in my home town, a mining town in northern Manitoba, Canada, "back in the day". It is so lovely, that I cannot listen to it without getting out the box of kleenex! To me, it's about never giving up on your dreams or goals. I absolutley love Jennifer Warnes' beautiful voice coupled with Joe Cocker's more baratone singing voice, it makes such a lovely duet! No wonder we picked this song for our special occasion! I saw this movie too, above, and it was great also. Have a great rest of 2022 everyone!

One of my Dads favourite songs. He made my mother sit all through the credits so he could hear the song.
Oh my goodness they dont compose music like these unless from a different planet absolutely classical and lovely
I miss them both. Jennifer's voice was so beautiful, and Joe Cocker was an amazing song writer. RIP
Sherry Duncan FYI "Up Where We Belong" is a Platinum-certified,Grammy Award-winning hit song written by Jack Nitzsche,Buffy Sainte-Marie, and Will Jennings. It was recorded by Joe Cocker (lead vocals) and Jennifer Warnes (lead and background vocals) for the smash 1982 film An Officer and a Gentleman
Didn't write this song, only sung it.
Dare I add that Jennifer Warnes is still among us, or we among her?

A great movie from a much simpler time; I started my senior year in high school in 1982.
🍀.. I was 2years old
This song has no limits; it flies high like our Eagle-jets soaring to the Heavens. The depth and beauty of this duet touches my soul and actually makes it hurt. It tells the truth about life and how we should choose love , show it, preach it and live by it. I grew up in Joe Cocker.❤
It has almost been four decades, and I still enjoy this iconic song ! Thanks
This movie came out the year I graduated from Highschool in 1982, went to see it at the movies, it was truly an instant classic. My father was a Naval Aviator who went through Pensacola preflight, he also did 3 tours in Viet Nam, flying off of the Enterprise and America. One of the leads in this movie, David Keith's father was my Grandmother's first cousin, so I really love this movie so much and it was such a great piece of artwork, with not a huge budget.
Alex Adair thats great
Awesome 👍.. yes this movie killed it at the box office.
Up Where We Belong
Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes
Who knows what tomorrow brings
In a world, few hearts survive
All I know is the way I feel
When it's real, I keep it alive
The road is long
There are mountains in our way
But we climb a step every day
Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry, on a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world below, up where the clear wind blow
Some hang on to "used to be"
Live their lives looking behind
All we have is here and now
All our life, out there to find
The road is long
There are mountains in our way
But we climb them a step every day
Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry, on a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world we know, up where the clear winds blow
Time goes by
No time to cry
Life's you and I
Alive today
Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry, on a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world we know, up where the clear winds blow
Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry, on a mountain high

Hello Kacy how are you doing hopefully all is well with you and your family!!
I saw this movie when it first came out, I joined the navy a few months later. I was stationed on an aircraft carrier stationed out of Japan, the USS MIDWAY CV-41 , I met a girl named Karen 1/2 through my time onboard. We dated for the 30 days I was home on leave. I didn’t see her for 12 years . I found her after all those years , she was divorced and so was I. We dated for 5 years and I’m looking at her now folding clothes in the kitchen.... married 17 years now. Long story short I love this movie and this soundtrack. My you tube name says it all. It’s now 12-26-2022, we now have 4 grandkids lol. 8 week old twin girls, 18 month boy and a miracle baby girl that’s 3 1/2 now, born at 1 pound 13 ounces and kickin ass now. So blessed. Tomorrow 9/4/2023 the wife and I are going to liberty station, it’s the old naval training center/ recruit training command where it all started for me (us) it’s been close since 1997 but is now a historic public venue with ships, eateries and Naval history. I’m looking forward to it⚓️

I remember watching this movie on a date with the only girl I truly ever fell in love with. It was a short relationship but had a lasting impact on my life. Every time I hear that song it brings me back to that wonderful moment in my life.
Title please
Don't tell your wife this story and if you do leave out the part where this date girl was the only women you ever fell in love with.
how was the date man? thinking of watching this on a date too
What is the name of this movie
@@MikeSmith-cn6ubthat’s the difference between a wife and girlfriend, one always feels one has loved a girlfriend in the past more because it was temporary, it’s only a sense of nostalgia for the past and a misplaced feeling of how things could’ve turned out, had he married that girlfriend he would’ve felt about her the same way he feels about his wife and would’ve imagined a another past girlfriend as the only woman he fell in love with!
The 80s/90s were magical, especially in music. The best Brazilian bands and artists formed, internationally great musicians. Legião, Paralamas, Titãs, Barão, Cazuza, Capital Inicial, Ira, Ultraje, Zero, Blitz, Lobão, Lulu Santos, Semper Livre, None of Us, Biquini, Djavan... Eric Clapton, Aha, Dire Straits, Supertramp, simply red, the police, Elton John, INXS, Tears for fears... Also in the cinema, like ET, enjoying life crazy, the Goonies, the lost boys, back to the future, ghostbusters, top gun, i want to be big, a badass cop, deadly weapon, indiana jones, the spell of aquila... Series, Wonder Years, miami vice, pirated tv, dragon cave, law angels, macgyver, the cat and the mouse, unlimited frames, the hunks, Friends We really had fun with an Atari with just one button, or playing 'button', cards, killer, month, adedanha, pique... Beautiful memories, of holidays at grandmother's house, meeting friends, parties dancing to 'slow music', the first discoveries, the first kiss, drunkenness, adventures, etc. It is impossible to translate all the memories into this space, but without a doubt this music was present, contributing to these years being incredible.
These movies definitely bring back memories!!! Movies definitely have changed over the year but these movies will always be the best!! 80's movie's 80's music 80's period is the best!!
Jennifer Warnes' opening vocals are burned into my mind.
There are a couple of films in my life that make a real difference Every time i watch this video I remember the story and every time at the end tears of joy are running down my face
Saying it agan
I remember the song was a hit just after I graduated from High School in 1982, and it was part of what inspired me to join the Navy. This was filmed in the general part of the state where my first duty station was, at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton.
I've read the ending scene was filmed in the actual paper mill in Port Townsend, and when he carried her out, the actual workers there spontaneously started clapping and cheering--it wasn't in the script, and then the actors who played her friend and mother joined in.
About 2 years ago my wife and I drove up and visited some of the shooting locations for a day trip. Much of it is still there, but somehow it looks a little different in the movie. But, I guess after 40 years... I just can't believe it has been this long. Where did the time go?
Every time I hear this song I weep deep in my heart and it hurts. Why can’t these haters listen to this song and feel and show love.💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
Still simply one of the most beautiful songs ever.. I am so happy to be able to experience music like this..
Up Where We Belong
Joe Cocker, Jennifer Warnes
Who knows what tomorrow brings
In a world few hearts survive
All I know is the way I feel
When it's real, I keep it alive
The road is long
There are mountains in our way
But we climb a step every day
Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry
On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world below
Up where the clear winds blow
Some hang on to used to be
Live their lives looking behind
All we have is here and now
All our lives, out there to find
The road is long
There are mountains in our way
But we climb a step every day
Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry
On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world we know
Where the clear winds blow
Time…
Everytime I watch this movie and see the ending I tear up. I had a similar experience while going through Officer Candidate School and OBC. God It was a time to remember and relive.
