- Today I'm showing you an easy way of replacing the front shocks, springs, and installing a lift kit on my 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road without spring compressors, just using a standard floor jack. I'll be installing the Bilstein 5100 Front Shocks along with Old Man EMU (OME) 887 2" Lift Springs.
The same process can be used on most other toyota trucks including the 2nd Gen Tacoma (All 2005+ Tacomas), FJ Cruisers, 4Runners and Tundras.

You’re better than most of the people on RUclips at explaining what you’re doing-easy to understand. it might not hurt to call out the socket sizes when you’re doing the steps
Holy crap. I’ve watched so many videos on changing suspension, and none actually have mentioned anything about strut mounts. Not only did you show a faster method of changing the coils/struts, you also showed a convenient way to compress coils
Thanks for watching, glad you found the video informative!
@@GearheadJT thank you very informative video. Did u just use the stock suspension top hat for this? Awesome how you did the compression without additional tools. Definitely not your first rodeo.
Hey brother-I just want to say thank you. You showed a convenient way for me. I lifted my truck by following your video instructions- simply said- it was ON POINT! Many thanks- I'll have it aligned next week.
@@omsr.7880 Did you find out if stock top hat was used?
@@JD-hg4vq did my own searching and found out you can reuse the old ones.
This is the way to install billies DIY! Saved a ton of time and no need to go to a shop for a spring compressor, let alone take apart the whole front end. Thank you so much!
Omg!! I’m speechless.. You freaking genius!! No need for a spring compressor and dealing with if everything’s straight! I’m about to install a 3in lift on my 4Runner right now!
I first tried disassembling the entire front truck (exagerating) and using the spring compressor like every other video shows. That was a waste of time, the spring compressor didn't fit inside the stock bilstein and spring set up. Luckily I found this video, it worked like a charm. I installed a set of 5100s with eibach coil and had no problems at all following this method.
Thanks for this video man. Did 5100s and bilstein springs by myself today with this video, even though so many people were telling me I couldn't do it by myself or without a spring press.
good to hear! I too am going to be doing this myself in 2 weekends time. 🤘
@@GOATHartt90 did you use stock top hat?
@@JD-hg4vq I did. I also went 6112 5160 combo vs 5100s. It was a sinch lowering it with my 3 ton jack and loosening the lower control arm, alignment tab bolt. Just make sure to mark it before loosening and go get an alignment ASAP.
I watched a few other videos where they almost disassembled the entire front of the truck, spring compressors and all that. I followed your video and it went exactly as you demonstrated! Thanks for taking the time to put this video together! I'll add that Bilstein provides the rubber spacers for their rear shocks but for some reason they are not included with the front shocks. So if you spacers are dried up, cracked or missing you might want to get those before starting the job.
Awesome, glad to hear the video helped!
Now that was pretty cool. Saved people from renting a spring compressor or a trip to the mechanic shop. I’ve always loosened the cam bolts like you but when swapping to bigger shocks(2.5) that needed to separate the UCA due to the thickness. All in all awesome video that will save tons of money
Thanks dude you're the man ,that's how it gets done .
I had to watch this twice…dang this is the hands downs easiest looking was to swap out the old for the new😍 thank you for taking the time to make this!!
Sub'd! Great video. Very clever way to disassemble the coil/shock. Saved me a trip and $$ to the local shop to have the springs compressed and swapped over. Plus I didn't have to disassemble the whole suspension as I've seen on other installs. Thanks a million! Keep the videos coming!
Thank you! Glad the video helped!
Yes I agree, I think I may be able to pull this off. Lol
@@williamboyle8918 you’ve got this!
This video is a lifesaver. Turns out the loaner spring compressor I acquired from O'Reilly's can't free itself from in between the coils once mounted to the strut with the top hardware. That's when using 5100's and ome 2885's for anyone about to do this themselves.
Best video yet on changing out and compressing the spring! Ready to install 5100s on my FJ!
Don't forget to tighten your LCA cam bolts
When reinstalling, don't forget to retighten the LCA bolts, I didn't see it in the video. Thank for you posting this by the way!
Also, torque them to spec, when the vehicle is at ride height. not when its on the jack.
If you’re installing heavier springs, this method won’t work. I tried this with OME 350# springs and the whole truck came off the jack and jack stands and the spring still wasnt compressed enough to thread the top bolt. Ended up having to take them in to a shop to have the springs switched out. FWIW, lots of shops will swap your springs for $20-$40 and have a quick turn around time. You still save hundreds doing it yourself and don’t risk disfiguring or killing yourself in the process.
Which coils did u try fitting onto the truck? I was thinking of installing the ome 886 using this method, they are heavier springs but not by much. I do have a winch and bumper that weighs the truck down more, so I'm hoping I'll be okay.
I had that exact same issue over the weekend. Went with T2 coils and they wouldn’t compress enough under the trucks weight and me sitting on the fender, and I was able to get it high enough the thread the nut on top of the shock. it kept raising the whole truck off the jackstands. Reinstalled stock gear and am having a shop do it soon
I bought a spring compressor set on Amazon for $35 CDN... easy.
You made this look super easy. I'm considering the 5100s and OEM spring to level out my truck.
awesome will get mine done this weekend then back to the shop for an allignment next week. Appreciate the video
Crazy how the whole thing is held up by that little spring clip.
@@MrFairworld Yeah, pretty incredible!
Thank you so much for posting this video, it saved me so much time and hassle, I had my front struts swapped out in under 2 hours!
Thanks for watching - Glad it was helpful!
Just installed my TRD Lift kit today following this guide. Thanks
Man thanks dude. I wanted to install my own suspension but didn’t want to deal with all the spring compressing/decompressing. I have not seen anything like this method you are using on RUclips.
Damn dude you’re bad ass I will do that this coming weekend with my new shocks👍🏽🌮🇲🇽🤣
Thanks for watching!
Dang good job there Batman!
Thanks for watching!
You are a legend for making this video. So much easier this was and don’t have to worry about using a spring compressor! Thanks for the vid and have a Merry Christmas!
Great video, you made it look straight forward. Thanks
Clever idea with compressing the coil!! Thanks!!
Thanks for the feedback!
i see.. you left the top hat attached to the truck! nice...
Great video. I would have liked to know what the torque specs are.
Awesome video bro!! You just showed me an easy way to change my front shocks thanks man 🤙🏽
Thanks for watching! Glad it helped!
Freakin genius! What a cleaver idea. I will be using this method to swap out my stock front struts for the bilstein 5100 and stock coil combo.
I got 33s on stock Tacoma suspension it’s running great. Would of been better video if you went over exact tools and better angles
Thanks for the video if I want to only remove to replace the top rubber bushing. Can I just leave everything and just replace
Excellent, thank you.
Just did this and it was the fast I ever done!
This video was so helpful. Just knocked this out tonight using your method. Thanks!
thats crazy how you didnt need remove the sway bar link. i did it the same too but with just two jack stands and a floorjack.
Thanks for the video! This is awesome. Never knew that you can install it like what you did.
Yes, your video is very helpful!👍🏽
I can’t get the shock nut on the top off without the shock shaft spinning. I can only hold onto it for so long before the nut covers the part I’m holding on to, but it’s not loose enough to completely undo it… frustrated….
Same. What did you end up doing to get it off?
@@brycek3738 I actually took a file and filed down two opposing sides of the treads on an angle. So the top 1/2 of an inch or so of the shaft when sloped . This way the nut would spin off the top when I couldn't hold the shaft any more. Lots of wire brush and WD-40 to reduce the friction when it got to the top of the threads.
@@kristian1977 nice. I couldn’t get the nut back down either, which was problematic. For the next person in this situation, I went back to harbor freight and bought some thin needle nose pliers and just gripped the fuck out of the bolt from the top and was able to get the nut to keep spinning. Lots of PB Blaster too.
Awesome method .. love the explanations too. You did a nice install. Thanks for the video !
That ingenuity 🤘
If only I could do that with my ride
Hey, just wondering how they are holding up. I heard they can sag.
It looks so easy when you dont have rusty bolts! my 2009 is from the East Coast and boy every nut on the truck is rusty and a pita to get off. Great video. Sub'd
amen to that I got an 07
Did you torque the nut on top of the shock?
This is also a quick and easy way to change the springs without using a spring compressor.
I did the exact installation like you and on the driver side the top of the shock where you tighten the bolt popped up. also happenned on the stock suspension is there supposed to be 2 washers ? thanks
Never seen anyone use the weight of the vehicle to compress the springs. That’s pretty smart. But aren’t we supposed to torque some of the bolts only when it’s on the ground? Which ones are they. And what can be torqued in the air
Thank you so much for the awesome vid, so simple! One question what are the OEM torque specs? O
Stumbled across your video while researching spring compression tools. Man am I glad I did great video! Have you noticed any difference in performance with the new coils? I vote on a front bumper for your next project 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Did you put any spacer on driver side to compensate the lean?
This is an awesome video, installing my kit this month whenever it arrives. are you going to be installing UCA's? if so can you make a video ? that'd be awesome. You got yourself a subscriber !
Thanks for watching. Yes, I'I'll be doing UCA's in the near future!
I really enjoy your videos. Can you tell me what were you marketing with the white marker was a little confused
That's an awesome vid, in particular how you replaced the spring without using any compressors. I'm looking into the bilstein 6112. Any thoughts on how it compares with the 5100? Thank you!!!
It would be the same process, essentially by using the control arm and floor jack to decompress and compress the spring up and down. I'm also looking at potentially upgrading to the 6112 in the future. Essentially the 6112 is a beefier shock with a larger piston. In My Opinion: 5100 is a great shock for a daily driver that occasionally goes offroad, 6112 is made for more of the heavier duty offroad rig which will perform a lot better offroad and will still do great on the street.
Nice job young man, thanks.
If you've ever used those compressors before you never will again.
I didn't notice if the brake lines were loosened
Thanks for the video brotha!
Thanks for watching!
Do you use the stock top hat? The shop I called said I would need a different one
Awesome video dude! Thank you 🙏🏻
Why did you go down to the lowest clip setting on the shock? Also are those stock a arms?
I was using the ARB Springs as the lift springs, and yes, stock arms.
Great looking blue and brass combo, and great looking garage! Subbed... I'd like to see some cab storage ideas. It seems like most RUclipsrs either go for long term overlanding overkill or nothing.
Thanks, I appreciate it! Cab storage is definitely on the top of my list, majority of the time I've got my rear seats down and it drives me insane having stuff slide back and worth on the smooth surface.
This was an awesome vid! So with the 887 & your Shock at the lowest ring setting gave you 2” of lift?
Thanks! Yes, when running a 2" Lift Spring like the OME 887, 886, etc. you want to keep the Circlip on the lowest setting on the Bilstein 5100's. Otherwise, you're going to have an extremely rough ride.
@@GearheadJT what if you raise it up one slot? will it give you a bigger lift with not such a rough ride?
Great video! 👍🏽
Thank you!
Great channel I just came across it today I love the gold rims can I ask you if your front axel is pointed down lower then factory now ? I remember when I would lower cars back in the 1990s I would always break cv joints
But where I bought them they gave me one of two inches and the other of three and the truck is higher on one side and I went and told them, and they told me that there are different heights, and now I have to change
Thanks for the video I used both videos for the same setup front and rear. Did you notice any “taco lean” ? Did you add a spacer on the driver side? Thank you
I replaced factory springs/shocks with OME and Bilsteins. The driver side had a slight lean so I loosened the "top hat" and dropped in a 1/4" spacer. This raised that corner a half inch and now both sides are within a quarter inch of each other.
Im sure this process would work in a 2020 Tundra correct? Basically same front suspension components.
Nice work
Is there a particular spot on the splash pan in front to jack the truck up from the center ? Also, what is the advantage of replacing the front coilovers if the strut is adjustable to the same 2" ? Thanks !
How much settle sag did you get from OME 887?
So your getting a lift from the spring not the bilsten? Does it ride better than the bilsten alone?
Great idea on how to the coil. I have 2" eibach coils on my tacoma. The ride is very stiff, how's your ride quality. Is it stiffer than what you had before or did the oem coils soften the ride a little. The eibach coils I have are very stiff, terribly bumpy over uneven surfaces.
When I do change out the coil spring, would it possible to add 2” or 3” strut spacer after, how much lift in the front did you receive after the install?
I'll be installing an Eibach Suspension Kit Stage 1 on my SheTruck (2019 SR5). I don't want to deal with all the spring compressing/decompressing process. This video is perfect!! The Eibach kit came with relocation brackets for the sway bar (I guess to get the sawy bar out of the way and gain more access). But since I will be following your video instead of disassembling a lot more like most of other videos show, do you know if I have to do this step, relocate the sway bar? Thanks in advance!
PLEASE SHARE ABOUT TORQUE SPEC!!!
Hi One question, if I put the shock absorber two inches higher, I need to put something on the stabilizer bar, or I don't need to change anything, I watched your video and I did so, but where did I buy the shocks?
Sub’d man! Thanks. I’m doing this same thing with my taco. Did this end up leveling or did u get a reverse rake?
Thanks! I ended up leveling it out by installing a ICON 1.5" AAL.
Nice Vid thanks. My front 5100’s are rattling (have not re tightened them yet). Do you think I need to take the wheel off? Or can I just reach in and tighten it down as is?
Can you tell how is the ride quality with this set up? Is it smooth as stock or stiff? Thanks
I have 5110 fronts, why did you put the adjustment on the lowest setting? Anyone can chime in, I was thinking of putting it on the highest when I get the coils
Any idea if this method can be used in a Tundra? So much easier than removing sway bar link bolt.
Thanks!
Thanks for the support, glad the video is helpful!
Are the 887s capable of handling the middle setting on the 5100s for more of a 2.25 or 2.5 inch lift? Or is it not recommended?
Would this still work if you were also replacing the strut mounts? I noticed you used the old ones. Thanks.
Have you experienced any sagging since you have put these in?
I ran that setup for over a year with no sag or issues, even after adding a hiline series front bumper.
I put ome shocks & 887 coils on my 5th gen 4runner with an arb front bumper and theirs a lot of sag - any recommendations for a stronger heavy coil spring to offset the weight ?
Did you do before and after measurements? I've heard people get 2.5 / 2.75 lift. Curious what you ended up with.
I'm also curious
Did you not have a top hat on the old strut?
So we can torque all those bolts to spec when jacked up?
What clip do I put it on for my 5100’s if I’m running 886 springs
I’m trying to install new eibach coil overs that came with my bilstein shocks by using the weight of the truck and a hydraulic jack like In this video. The problem I’m having is when I start to jack it back up to install the new spring, the shock won’t stay straight enough for the top pin to go through the slot at the top and becomes increasingly more difficult to keep straight as I compress it. Has anyone else ran into this issue or have a suggestion how to handle?
How much lift does each circlip setting give?
#1: STOCK, #2: 0.65", #3: 1.1", #4: 1.55", #5: 2" - Before I installed the OME's I ran the 5100's on the 2nd Circlip (.65") Which made it fairly level. I also had it on the 3rd (1.1") which gave me a slight reverse rake.
Hey I’m running 887 with Bilsteins 5100. I wanted to know if it’s ok to crank it up one notch? I have a rake style and I’m wanting to change that
What’s the ride quality like? Noticeably smoother than stock? What made you go with the 887’s? Thinking about getting the 5100’s all around. Thanks.
@thetopalovic Does the spring need to be oriented, or turned, a specific way? In other words, should the end of the spring be pointed to the front? To the rear? etc.
You think this would work with a 3 generation 4 runner?
Been thinking of the 887 or the 885, 887 is for extra heavy load which I don’t have, would i run into some issues going with the heavy load springs without having the extra weight?
I had no issues with the 887 with no aftermarket front bumper, going with a Heavier Duty spring up front with no extra weight might make the truck less comfortable and more bouncy up front.
@@GearheadJT thanks for the reply boss!
I know this is for a Tacoma but can you do this with a First gen Tundra with the same set up (5100 and 2887 OME) ?
Yes, should be the same, however the spring rates might be higher so you might need to use spring compressors.
Great video, I used it to install the same setup. Did you end up with the advertised 2.5" of lift from the old man emus? I did before and after measurements and only got 1.75" passenger side and 1.5" driver. I've bought the toytec 1/4" spacer to correct that difference but I'm also considering knocking my 5100s up to the first notch despite what everyone says....
@giggitygoo 888s, when I installed the toytec spacer I decided to bump my 5100s up a notch despite what everyone says. Been 2 months now and the truck measures exactly 2.5" both sides. Offroad ride quality is still substantially better than stock.
Hi, what is the best setting if i want to achieve a 2.5" lift using bilstein 5100 and the OME 2" lift coil spring and install a steel bumper and a winch? Thank you
what did you end up going with?
