  • Join me as I search the Thames foreshore at low tide for objects lost or thrown away by Londoners of the past (or the present!).
This video was filmed in December 2019 and is when I found the most beautiful clay pipe bowl! I would say it is one of my best ever (and I've found a few!).
This and other little trinkets and treasures left out by the Thames tide - and each with a story to tell.
You need a permit to mudlark on the River Thames and you can find out all the info you need on the Port of London Authority website:- www.pla.co.uk
Thank you for watching. You can follow me too on instagram and twitter @tidelineart
    See you soon.

While watching yNicola make these finds, I often think about the person who accidentally dropped their brooch or other "treasure" into the Thames and said something like, "Oh no! There it goes! It's gone now forever!" 250 years later, Nicola's shadow falls upon it as she says, "Oh look! Do you see what I'm looking at?" and 70,000 people witness its reappearance in the light of day.

Your lovely photography is the icing on the cake to the discovery of your finds. The Battle of the Thames between the fighting fish and hungry fowl certainly had me cheering for the hands-down winner as confirmed by your score board. Your videos always leave me with the feeing I'd visited your lovely city -- a welcome respite in my day. Thank you for allowing my gush, and for taking us with you on your excursions, without leaving the comfort of our homes. Nicola, I appreciate how your artful talent permeates everything you touch.

The cormorant trying, and failing, to swallow a flatfish was funny. I remember the petrol cans that had those brass lids (Pratts). They usually rusted away in sheds, just leaving the brass lid and a pile of rust.

The lines bring back a memory that I will share with you, when I was in the third grade, my sister in the fourth, we got on the school bus one day and sat down together on the same seat. It wasn't long before I noticed a sandwich bag filled with trinkets on the floor of the bus, I picked them up and showed them to my sister who was a year and half older then her brother. I asked her if it was ok for me to have them. She said it was ok, so I put them in my pocket and when I got in my classroom at school I gave them to Amy, a girl I was madly in love with. Amy showed them to other kids in the room and it wasn't long before I was in trouble. The trinkets belonged to another girl that rode the same bus and just happened to be in the third grade also. It wasn't long before I was being questioned by my third grade teacher and the school principal as to how I came to have those trinkets. I explained that I had found them on the floor of the bus and that my sister told me I could have them. So the teacher and principal sent for my sister and asked her if she saw me pick them up off the bus floor and if she told me I could have them, my sister who I assume was as frightened as I was, said she had never seen those trinkets. The lines started for me that day on the black board during recess and continued every day at recess for two hold weeks and it was all because my sister did not tell the truth.

It is wonderful to see how a river recovers after centuries of "lack of understanding" and how nature can find its way back. Of course, people's awareness has certainly changed over the past few decades, but this river was already biologically dead in the 1970s. Of course, the efforts of the official bodies can also be clearly seen. But you Mudlarkers also contribute, if only a small part, to the fact that the river and its banks become clean again. That the whole thing should also be fun is a thing that I especially like to see. I eagerly await every new video. Greetings from old Vienna!

It is such a delight to watch this video! The swans remind me of peonies by the shapes of their feathers. That fish was sooo lucky. I kept thinking that bird needed claws to slice up that fish!!
The portrait pipe of a soldier is so elegantly sculpted -- amazing to see how beautifully it has held up after 200 years of being knocked about in the sea!
I look forward to seeing how you transform the red glass into a fish!
So inspiring to walk along the shore with you!
Looking forward to seeing more of your discoveries and art.
My best wishes for your good health, prosperity, and joy!

Hi Nicola, normally I do not look at how many subscribers people have. Tonight I saw out of the corner of my eye, a long string of numbers. Upon reading it properly, I couldn’t believe how many people finally found you! Congratulations 🎉 on the number of people who have impeccable taste! What I was initially going to comment on was the beautiful piece of Coral you found. The State of Michigan across the pond. Is actually made of two peninsulas upper and lower. Lower is often called the mitten. It is the only state where you can show someone approximately where you live with your hand. It is also surrounded by three of the five Great Lakes. There is a great deal of coral to be found there. They are called petoskey stone and are the State official stone. Check them out on google. They come in all different stages of coral growth as well. Thank you for all of the time, energy, and research you put into every video! Hopefully your car was a easy fix. Thanks again for all of your videos!

Hello Nicola, The coral stone was quite interesting. I live in Michigan and these coral stones are found in abundance on the shores of Lake Michigan especially in the areas around the cities of Petoskey and Charlevoix. In fact we call them Petoskey Stones and they have been named our state stone. They are especially beautiful when highly polished.

The Cormorant versus Dab; The Dab was never going to be swallowed, as it was far too wide for the poor bird, who was always going to be denied its meal.

What great detail on the pipe! No wonder this maker was so popular. Isn't it funny how similar things are found on the same day? I remember metal detecting finding numerous dimes or pennies. One nice summer Eve years back I found four Barber dimes, four Mercury dimes and four Roosevelt dimes and all in silver. Or four or five large US cents. Or three earrings or pendants or a number of some item. And of course being the Pipe Queen of the Foreshore all the pipes in one day. A very entertaining lark I'd say from this end of the Big Pond! I was always given lines by my German teacher, who made us write a German rhyme.
'Mein Hut der Hat drei Ecken, drei Ecken hat mein Hut
Und hat der nicht drei Ecken, dann ist er nicht mein Hut.'
(which means; 'My hat, it has three corners, three corners has my hat,
And if it doesn't have three corners, then it's not my hat.')
If you handed them in, he'd take them from you and as part of the punishment, he'd tear up the paper, throw it in the bin and say; 'There you go, your time was wasted!'
Now, I have Attention-Deficit-Hyperactive-Disorder (ADHD) so I was late daily. And the lines were part of the 'homework' for the next day.
He always said; 'Emma! You're late again! That's another 2 full pages of Mein Hut der Hat drei Ecken!!!' Only to tear it up the next day, when I handed it in.
So, eventually, instead of spending my precious time, writing the lines everyday, I started saving up pennies.
I then wrote a full page (both sides) of "Mein Hut" one more time, for myself. And kept it in my locker, together with about 25 copies, both sides printed.
That way I was always prepared for ány amount of lines he wanted me to write. And he never found out.

What a great looking pipe. You have a great eye Nicola My daughter found a few clay pipe. Mainly stems. it wasn't anything near impressive. We went to London for the day. As we always do. And we was having lunch at a local cafe on the shore near the Thames right next to tower of London . Not even realising you need a permit. But she just wanted to goto the shore. She was only around 8 yrs old then
We did come across a really old boot that was stuck in the wall if you can call it a wall. Right behind us. But I couldn't fish it out. And we really wasn't dressed for being on the shore. My daughter was wearing a beautiful baby blue & white flowery silk dress with frills on white frilly ankle socks and baby blue velvet fancy sandals and summer hat to match. She looked adorable with her summer hat and dress. But had to pick her up as she would of been covered in filth. Every time I watch your channel it reminds me of my little girl and how adorable she looked that day. She's 13 now. Sadly she won't wear dresses anymore. Sorry to go off subject. Great find as always Nicola. Thoroughly enjoy your channel. I'm Hoping there will be a next time to scour the shore. For a nice clay pipe.

But.... if it had started you’d never had found the pipe so it was meant to be perhaps?! Looking forward to your new finds! Welcome back!

    NIcola,
Speaking about pipes. Simon and friend where verging on Double Entendre while(whilst in Britain :)) jsut to cover both sides of the "Pond", examining their pipe finds as well.
I .,of course , commented and Said you would always take the high road in these kind of conversations:)
What a great find for a video opening
My wife and I have been bird watching for years, and I love your nature footage.
WE have Double Crested, Great and pelagic here in the states and I wondered what those were ?
I guessed Great , but I'm probably wrong
Aren't the Mute Swans lovely looking when doing their dances, however they are very powerful and capable of breaking ones arm or leg with their necks.
    Who would have thought that?
What a wonderful mix and ,LINES!!!
I had to do lines in grade school in the late forties for , I believe, not paying attention or talking too much or in this case, writing too much:).
    So what else is new.
    Cheers,
    Frederick "rik" Spector

Hiya. The salt spoon, yes, it's for salt (round for salt - elliptical/tear drop for mustard), isn't silver, I'm afraid, it's Sheffield silver plate. The marks on the reverse of the Terminal are for a famous Sheffield maker, J. G. Graves, later J. G. Graves Ltd., who was also a pioneer of Mail Order and Hire Purchase (paying by instalments). John George Graves had premises in several places; at Enterprise Works, St. Mary's Road, Gell Street and 169 West Street between 1900 and 1910 and at Margaret Street between 1911 and 1914. The firm became Limited in 1905. All the best to you.

Those bullet jackets were split by hand. I think to remove the lead, powder, and primer to reload a smaller calibre casing. Also, the little key may have been used to wind a trainman's watch. They were the most accurate pocket watches of the time and were not stem-wound. Beautiful episode. Thank you.

    • @justdustino1371

Incendiary bullets split and pop open to expell the burning magnesium or incendiary compound inside! Remember the London docks and the Thames were bombed and strafed by Stukas while the longer ranged Dorniers attacked inland! Impossible to measure those but the German 7.92mm machine gun bullet is .323" diameter.

    • @matthewspencer5086
      @matthewspencer5086 4 года назад +3

I am puzzled, because I am sure that the discarded bullet jackets would have had scrap value, being cupro-nickel. None of the noses are damaged and there are no rifling marks, so never fired. One of the jackets has a round nose, the others are spitzers. The round nose bullet, if a .303", would have been a pre-WWI MKVI. I think I'd be looking for a schoolboy to explain this find, on pain of being given lines.

    • @justdustino1371
      @justdustino1371 4 года назад +2

@@matthewspencer5086 All i saw were Spitzers! And cupro-nickel jackets are silver and went "bye-bye" in the 1920s. Those were gilding metal jackets! I think they are German 7.92mm incendiary rounds fired from wing mounted MGs from Stukas strafing the London docks. They hit water or mud, burst open, and now the jackets have washed up! Incendiary rounds have a base fuze and split open to expell the burning compound, melted lead comes out too! The noses should have, or have had, a steel insert! Armor Piercing-Incendiary, or "API".

    • @MrBigtire
      @MrBigtire 4 года назад +1

@@justdustino1371 Incendiary bullets still have a considerable amount of lead in them and they do not seemingly burst like that. Why would they all be found in one spot if they were fired incendiary rounds? They would also have rifling marks on the outside if they were fired.
