- Join me as I take a trip out with fellow mudlark David Nolan to search for history in the mud in the Medway. This video was made in the summer of 2019. In this video I find a horse skull in the mud which I am pretty sure is very old! Im also fortunate enough to find some Roman artefacts and many other mysterious and wonderful items which I then do some research on.
If you are able to help with ID on any of my finds then please comment below. Im always delighted to hear from you.
You can follow me on twitter and instagram @tidelineart
Thank you for watching.
See you soon.

I'm watching this again, two years later. That last scene as David rowed you two back, the sunset, the music...perfection. Thank you Nicola and David for a few peaceful moments. 💖💖
Nicola, I am commenting to you from Ashburn, Virginia USA. I am 82 years old and a retired member of the US Navy. I am a subscriber of yours and enjoy your mudlarking adventures very much. I find your channel relaxing and quite pleasant.
Hi William. Thank you for commenting. I'm delighted that you enjoy the videos. Thank you for watching, and a massive thank you for all the amazing work you've done. Best wishes from London. Nicola xx
Hello William from me here in Lincolnshire UK thank you for your service ❤️🇬🇧🇬🇧
Hello William from Manassas, VA. Thank you so much for your service to our country.
Me too! Fairfax, VA here. I often put her videos on to fall asleep to! That's not to say they are boring, far from it. They are very interesting to watch, and then so soothing and calming for someone with insomnia to nod off to.
@@debiesubaugher my parents live in Yorkshire, across the street from where Kline's Freeze used to be!
I love your inclusion of nature footage in your videos. It gives them so much more sense of place.
Thank you x
The bird tile is from the game of Mah Jong. It’s called a one bam.
I was just about to post that. Good call!
@@adriaan2618 I though it might be shell or carnelian. ???
Mah Jong indeed
You got there before me 😂. It is a very pretty tile
Just played mahjong for the first time 3 days ago! I think the bird is a 1 in the bamboo series?
Thank you very much for your comments and feedback. I shall go through and respond later. Just off out on an expedition! thank you for watching. Nicola x
USA are we?? Stop over..:)
Now I know that I have been watching too many old time team videos. When you picked up the piece of pottery I knew exactly what it was, even though we don't have any in the U.S.
No such thing as too much Time Team.
Right tho!
Same here!!Love Time Team!
7:45 How beautiful it looks with the seaweed cascading down like a long green mane!
I was thinking the samething!
Being an american, I can't imagine just walking along a beach and finding ancient roman artifacts from ad! LOL that's crazy to me.
The Doctor there are many many stone artifacts to be found in the US.
you can though - we DO have History in America, even ancient history. It depends where you walk.
Me too. American here. I would love to go to England and go larking with Nicola. 👀😍😋🇺🇸
@Echo 9970 It's possible to find Native American items that are thousands of years old.
@@mthom4615 In England, we can simply walk out of our houses, walk on Roman roads, walk past 1000 year old churches and see ancient structures on the way to the supermarket. It's quite different to how it is in America
Roman pottery!! Congratulations! Thank you for your kindness in returning the little crab stowaway.🦀
I didn't know horses had canine teeth either.
"Every time I learn something new it pushes some old stuff out of my brain." ~ Homer Simpson.
Hope I didn't lose anything important.
Thank you for escorting the little Crab back to his Sea.
What a fabulous find, we now have the Goddess Nicola finding the Goddess Victory. Good show you are quite the mudlark.
Should I be studying? Yes. Is watching Nicola more fun? Also yes. ♥️♥️♥️
You can learn a lot from these videos.
These videos are little history lessons, aren’t they?
Michele Hood Absolutely! But I don’t think that Nicola can help me with nursing school hahaha 😂
Victoria Chalifour I agree. I should be doing something that doesn’t make me wanna go shlep though the muddy banks with her a find something amazing. I’m from the states. And the Midwest. I find rocks and crystals, arrowheads sometimes.
@@Annevictoire1000 😂
"I take care of all the playthings that children have loved. When they are old and worn out and the children don't need them anymore, I take them away with me and turn them into Real." Nicola's side job:)
It’s so interestingly the way you look up your finds I am nearly 70 years old and can’t wait for another video so thank you
Love your videos. They are very relaxing. Remind me of my younger days tramping through the woods, exploring.
Loved the Roman pottery piece.
The fangs are called “wolf’s teeth”
They’re often removed at a young age so as not to interfere with the ‘bit’.
And on the close up of the skull, bit wear can be seen on the back side of one of the teeth.
Those are just the canines, wolf teeth are in front of the premolars
these are not wolf teeth, they are tushes, you almost never hear people calling them canines. Wolf teeth are small vestigial teeth that usually erupt right in front of the back molars. They do interfere with the bit and getting them diagnosed, if not erupted is a nightmare.
You're right Christopher they're wolf teeth, my horse had them removed by the vet they use a tool that looks like an apple corer and cut it out from the gums
Yep, wolf teeth. Most people remove them now days. The bit hits them and causes pain so they’re removed.
As a birder I enjoy your forays into bird observations which are always beautifully photographed and integrated without being skipped over. They enhance the feeling of place.
Now I know where Fred Flintstone's loyal order of water buffalo fraternity comes from
Oh my gosh I completely forgot about that! Thanks for the memory! :-)
Lovely way to spend my Sunday morning: mudlarking vicariously through you! :)
Hank Green sent me here. Searching for stuff is one of my favorite things to do: birds, plants, mushrooms, seaglass, seashells, etc. I'm thinking of trying magnet fishing. Love that you included footage of the shorebirds in your video.
I couldn't help it, I heard Police's "Message in a Bottle"...
Love the fragment of Roman pottery...
I'm highly envious of some of your finds at times... The coolest thing I've found is a 10,000 - 3,000 year old spearhead off the shores of lake Michigan, I'd walked past three times before I finally decided to pick it up.
Thanks for sharing!
Naomi & Wendy Im glad you picked it up! I find artifacts in California occasionally.
@@blukeblue1235 Yeah, I'm very proud of that find!😊
@Denise Bond Ànd this is why I have to work hard not to become envious... 😊
Thanks for sharing Denise!
Bakelite can often be identified by smell, it has a distinctive odor. Though a long soak in the mud may interfere with that. I can smell bakelite in a shop and it's fun to track it down.
Lovely to see the avocets feeding at the end.
Thankyou ! I was going to ask what they were
David certainly knows how to take a mudlarker on a proper date. LOL
Thank you miss, i love the shots of the shore birds, especialy the swans.
So pleased to see a new video by you. I love you for taking the little crabs to the the river shore to find new places to live.
The pipe stem (which you show upside down), would have had a bowl with a short projection from its base and probably a silver ring. I am smoking an almost exact example as I write this. I hoard briar pipes and am determined to find a whole clay one when I can limp down to the river from Kilburn, this summer? Delightful and soothing videos Nicola!
How brave you are Nic, honestly I've seen bigger lifejackets than that 'boat' !!
I’m watching three years later and I love your videos and how you incorporate nature into your videos and the scenery.
Love the Avocets at the end. Went up the Tamar on a boat trip with Tony Soper when I was about ten to see them. They were still a very rare bird at the time. Brought back memories. Thanks. :)
If that bead IS very old then it could be the venerable bead. (I’ll get me coat).
nice one!
The little tile at 4 minutes is a mahjong tile! And I think that one is what we call “a special” in my family. Not one of the standard suits, but a season or a wind maybe? I don’t think I’ve played since I was a little girl, but I’m sure that’s what it is.
David is a very good sport to take you out on a Lark. Nicola, as always, a treat to go with you as you find unusual treasures.
Thank you
Thank you for bringing this lark out of the archives. Hope your trip to CA has been positive and fruitful.
Mudlarking on the Thames is on my bucket list if I ever get to London❤️
Gorgeous finds. My heart skipped a beat when you found the Roman pottery pieces. I hope the horse didn't drown in the sea or river on a sinking ship.
Thanks, a wonderful tonic for a afternoon of freezing rain in Vermont.... Be well.
As always a fun and interesting video. Thank you so much for taking us along. I have deterioration of the neck and spine and am having a particular bad weekend. I really needed something to get my mind off the discomfort, your video was the right medicine :-) . I recognized the mahjong tile as a game piece, just didn't know what game lol. Something to keep in mind when storing early plastic pieces you find - don't store them with metal. Metal causes celluloid - the lighter weight plastics to deteriorate. Have a great week, see you next Sunday.
You are a far braver woman than I. To get in that little rubber kayak and go across a bay. See me vigorously shaking my head no? Thank you for being brave and sharing another wonderful video
I can't imagine what it looked like with both of you in it!
Lovely video Nicola. The few feeding Avocet at end were beautiful.
Hi Nicola: That little tile with the engraved bird is a Majhong tile, it's one of the special seasons tiles. It's probably carved in elephant tusk.
Elephant Tusk..Breaks my heart if true.
How do you always manage to pickup 7 % of a broken plate or bowl and still end up with a perfect 👌 story or logo smack bang in the centre. Incredible. 🇦🇺👍
Your Roman pottery find is amazing, quite beautiful.
Thank you. yes I was so fortunate to find that
It's funny -- I had to look up horse skulls to see what was up with those "k9" teeth -- even though I have been around horses off and on during my life and my two youngest daughters (14 and 17) have been taking riding lessons weekly for some years. Yup -- horses have those teeth! But great to see more of your Medway adventures in nicer weather than now! Thank you for sharing -- always a calming way to spend a while on a Sunday!!!
Thank you xx
I never knew that horses had canine teeth. But live and learn. I love the kayak trips to Ho Island. Seems like where you live gives easy access to the estuary and river. So much history and fun.
I don't think you could drag me away from there..the thought of just walking along and picking up untold years of history is mind boggling. Unless of course there was a trip to the pub planned afterwards..
Ha,HA. You've found one with Wolfe teeth. We usually have them pulled so the horse isn't uncomfortable by having the bit bang into them. Poor crabs, you took their home. " we're not going to bother you little crab", just stealing your protection. Lol. Thanks Nicola and David.
Love the horse skull with the seaweed mare. Very cool. Must be a "Sea Horse" snicker. :-P
When one finds a Coca-Cola bottle you should always check the bottom. The older green ones are embossed with the name of the city where they were first bottled. For some arcane reason unknown to me, certain cities are more valuable than others.
Every time I watch , excitement and I must say , Abit of jealously gets me.😍
I really like to watch your videos, good luck and more different finds for you
Nicola, you are an absolute charm to watch! You've inspired me to get a pair of boots and mudlark along the James River here in the states when the weather warms a bit.

Bring a magnet on a 20 ft length of parachute cord with you as well, never can tell what is just beyond the waters edge and no permit needed usually (at least not here in Southern California). .
Your glass bead sure looks ancient.
My great grandfather was in the Dockyard Police at Chatham. They lived in a row of police houses in Upnor and rowed across the river to work.
I can't believe how many RAOB pipes you find! Those old guys must have been smoking their brains out!
You could get Si-Finds to reshape the cute bottle
The little bead shall make a fish very happy, his friends shall be jealous, awesome adventure Nicola.🇨🇦
Your so patient! I’d have been too excited to wait to read that message 🤪. Awesome finds!
Wow the Roman pottery is beautiful and the horse skull is magnificent! You always find such amazing things. I seem to be limited to one really good thing from a trip to the Thames but you find such unusual and intriging objects. It could make a person jealous but as you are the Queen of mudlarking it is only to be expected! :)
Hello! I was just wondering.... when you find Roman pottery like you did.... does the museum give it back to you after it’s recorded?
Kathy
Washington State
Are you keeping the Ancient Roman finds....I sure hope so...after the ohs and ahs on time team ...that’s part of history!
Another good video with some interesting finds. I like the roman finds, especially the part of a bowl..
Such a bohemian adventure. An inflatable, Roman relics and bbq sausages. Now that's a Summer jaunt
Love all your adventures you take us on and how you explain the HISTORY of each item thank you😁
How cool, the large wading birds at the end with the thin, upcurved bills are Pied Avocets. I love your bird b-roll almost as much as the larking finds haha.
Found you a couple of days ago and can’t put you down! So enjoy your finds and explanations. Have learned a great deal. Thank you and God bless❤️🦋
Welcome! Xx
Thank you Nicola and David for a particularly enjoyable video. Loved the brilliant haul of eclectic finds. The anecdote about the little crab in the hallway being taken down to the Thames was very sweet. You have a kind heart!
This video was great as usual! You are a historian, archiologist, creature lover, and all around interesting person. I learn something new every time I watch your videos.. Tell David and Si Find Hello.. From the USA.
Just watching this video before Nicola came on, ruclips.net/video/iii316ytxPY/видео.html I got all excited as I live in Jamestown (Scotland) and uncle Jimmy (Sir James Gunn) didn't come home, but that was before 1400, and the family believe he was buried in Westport. ???
might the words on the pipe read "Bye peeps" or is that what you read out? Some sort of farewell? I love your videos!
Yes it’s always worth a trip to the museum, however, I meant working with palaeontologist...in Canada my father and mother have four dinosaurs named after them...upon finding the sites they worked to extricate finds for museum...this is all I meant...Nicola is to be commended for doing that vary thing...
Hello, Nicola. I am watching some of your older videos as I haven't seen them all yet. The horse skull was quite interesting. I didn't know they had canine teeth either, how amazing, probably left over from some ancestor. I love that you video the birds you see while out larking about. The swans are very beautiful. There was a shocking and terrible news story today from upper New York state that was about a swan. So seeing that lovely swan you spoke to was nice. You identified the Egyptian geese in one of your videos, they are so exotic looking. I've never seen one but was amazed to find out that there are some in the US. You have so many birds that I do not recognize. It would be great if you identified some of the others now and then. Lovely finds as always. Can't wait for a new video, but I'm loving watching the older ones I haven't seen.
Thanks Beth. New video out on Sunday ❤️ I'm glad you're enjoying the old ones
Beautiful finds as always Nicola White! The Roman pottery is always very special. Your filming was lovely as usual. Can't wait until the next one. Have a great week.
When you go to see the Northern Mudlarks in the Spring or Summer, will you be bringing your Mum? I love the Adventures of Mum's and their Girls together! Sharing the excitement of a "treasure hunt" and the love of history with the next generation! 👵👩👧👱
The tile could be a Mahjong piece.
Definitely a Mahjong tile, possibly made from Bakelite
Its always a pleasure to watch you!
Another wonderful mudlarking adventure to follow you and your guest along!
Thank you!!
I love that horse skull with its seaweed mane. get my imagination going.
The black pipe stem looks almost like it would fit into a hookah, which made me think of London opium dens. I liked your cyclop dog.
I so much enjoy watching your show ,to old to go hunting now,but I can watch you just like l am there .
Fabulous video Nicola from start to finish, thanks.
20:09 It is a vulcanite stem for a moder pipe from the looks it may be a Peterson Of Dublin standard pipe stem.
Hi Nicola, you made me laugh out loud when you said about sailing on a lilo. There was a show called Bread, one of the characters was called Lilo Lil. There’s a memory ! Glad you had bbq sausages, it’s the Australia Day weekend here. Thanks mate for a great video.
Ha ha thank you Freda xx
Another wonderful adventure! Thank you for sharing it! ❤
As always another top notch video Nicola.
Hi Nicola, that was such a fascinating lark to watch, I loved the horse skull, for an animal so powerful, it's snout looks so flimsy! It wouldn't want to run into a tree in the dark !! lol.
I think you should definitely ask the museum about the glass bead, it could date back to the Iron age or Roman period.
Thanks for showing the Avocets at the end, as they frantically sifted through the mud for goodies to eat!
Hugs, Louie xx
I was going to suggest a mahjong tile too but someone has beaten me to it! Lol Anyway another great video, I so look forward to them every Sunday.
I love your choices of music, Nicola. It's lovely and ethereal.
Your are a wonder Nicola, your lovely work manages not only to bring us all along on a wonderful outing but teaches so much at the same time. So much fun wish I was there this is the next best thing. Ta
The Roman pottery was an amazing find Nicola! Will you be able to keep them? The Mahjong tile is very cute as well! 💗😊
I have been sick in bed all week an this is the perfect hot toddy to make me feel better
pat goff get well soon x
I hope everyone is well now..
Today I've been under the Weather & watching video's.
It helps occupie my mind from the pain & discomfort.
Dear lovely mudlarking Lady.
No no no, I will not believe that this is an ordinary horse skull. With this kind of fang teeth you probably found the remainings of Nessies companion! ;-) Congrats!
I definitely enjoy your videos and that you save/rescue interesting things. Additionally your research is always great. 👍👌👏
Thanks a lot for making teaching recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck health and wisdom.
Such fun! Always lovely to go with on your adventures. Great finds! 😊 🐴❤

The best history lessons ever! I'm blown away!
Fabulous vlog as always and a lovely relaxing piece of music at the end. Thank you!
Thank you for helping me get through my winter.🇨🇦
Could the "Eye-Peeps" on the pipe possibly be "Eve-Peeps" and be an abreviation for a location? I am jealous that you have so many neat places to explore and hunt for treasures! We don't have many spots here across the pond.
