  • Another little tradition of the British rail enthusiast is to collect as many horns and whistles as possible using various means and with varying degrees of success, and so I have put together a collection of all of the toots, hoots and whistles that I've collected over the past year, ranging from the deep blasting horn of an InterCity 125 to the schoolgirl scream of an LNER B1!
    Enjoy!

    2:42 I don't know why but just seeing the locomotive struggle with its fouled whistle while being overheard by its slow chugging made me laugh

    Oh dear god, how I love the class 66's horn. As well as the steam engine whistles.

    My favourites was the green railbus, the Howlers from Class 47, the Black 5 double and the squaking class 20.

    9:32 this is the reason why I love British steam locomotives. The power that they bring and the voice of thier whistle never fails to amuse me… They are a part of our evolution they literally evolved with us. They are Metal beasts we can hope to forever cherish for years to come…

    Coming from the perspective of an American, I don't get why other parts of the world never adopted chime whistles and horns like here in the states. True they did with the A4 class Pacifics with their three chimes and the S160 2-8-0s that were shipped with them from the states but still.
    Also, why the two tone horns that play the notes independently? Was there any specific reason for it?
    I've been getting further into European and British railroads and I've never really understood the horn/whistle signal system. Two blasts for forward, three for reverse, one for "we've come to a complete stop" and the two long, one short, one long for grade crossings seems pretty effective and easier to understand to me.

      I think the independent tone control is to differentiate them from road vehicles (cars, vans, trucks etc)

    A fine collection. But sorry spotters, that Deltic sounded humorously, if almost tragically, pathetic, almost as if it had wind.

    Question from an American rail fan: what in particular are whistles and horns used for on British trains, and what are some examples?

    • @bennickss
      @bennickss Год назад

      To alert people near to the track that there’s a train approaching. Same as american horns, and train horns anywhere else in the world

    The horns and whistles of British locomotives often sound much more "cheerful" as compared to American horns and whistles.

    I can hear trains try to speak while whistling. At least what they sound like. And I know they dont.
