That actually went a lot better than I expected. Not a single fire, explosion, piano dropped on a caravan, etc. One of their more successful efforts!
Or at least until Hammond burns down half the train and a diesel locomotive demolishes the scum class car in the second part.

I love how excited Richard gets when he finds out the man is a Colonel. That gleeful respect for a military man is so sweet.
Honestly, I think it was more fear. They really don't wanna upset a colonel because they know he can rain Hell down on them if he wants to.
The Caravan lorry is just a bit so they were just expecting more minor people to come along and review it as a joke rather than a person of significant standing who likely has more important things to do.

This is my favourite episode because of how creative the comedy was, like Hammond dropping the plate of sandwiches off the train and it lighting on fire were hilarious
My favorite part was that Jeremy named his car (on the first train, which he later defected from to make the sports train) SCUM CLASS. And that Hammond and May put such effort into theirs and his was just some straw on the floor.

Exactly, heavy, wheel mounted springs would damp out the lateral oscillations, and make it less shaky. That's what all the compartments do in real trains.
The solution might be putting them on top of boogies from a class 313/2 or an American Subway train the R32/R44 Staten Island Railroad that way ride is smoother

I am curious: did they get permission from the railway to even make this episode?
they probably were granted permission to use a quite section of a branch line as opposed to the main line as branch lines typically have lower freight and public traffic running.
considering they didn't mount on a station but in a sidling this si probably what they did.

It’s a car show, with three best friends sharing a passion.
The filming, Hammond’s hilarity with the catering, and May’s total delight about running the whole thing.

After seeing a similar scene in Octopussy, I am thrilled to see that cars on train tracks are still evolving.
Since he’s the most knowledgeable on trains, it’s fitting that James gets to drive.

Well, the thing about top gear is that while it advertised itself as a motoring show, but it was really about three blokes being just plain dicks to each other. Maybe the show might recover, but only as long as they can new guys really can keep it up. In any case, there's always stig to fall back on.

That's what I thought. They can pull up the rail wheels and drive off.
That was a Scrapheap Challenge episode, too. I say "Scrapheap Challenge" because Junkyard Wars did a train episode, too, but the UK show had the teams build one that could drive on and off of rails to race on the road, too.
