About the Cabbage Patch Kids - when these were recalled, my little sister had already gotten one. I tried my absolute hardest to get this doll to eat my hair or get my fingers stuck (mind you I was a teenager and I wanted to test how true it was) and I could not get it to happen. It was laughable how hard I tried to see if this toy was dangerous and couldn't get it to do anything harmful at all. I bought one for myself (hidden high up on a shelf at Kmart) and never opened it afterwards. In fact, I now collect them when I find them and have yet to have a single issue. My sister never had any problems with hers either. I really have to wonder what on Earth these kids were doing to get them to eat their body parts.

That glass-blowing kit probably did inspire some kids to get jobs in the ever-increasing number of glass factories on the east coast, and mid-west during the early 1900's to 1940's. But yes, the chemicals used to make those pretty colors were very toxic (uranium, plus others), and it was not uncommon for the average glass-blower to live very short lives.

If you've heard of Battlestar Galactica, you may have heard of yet another toy that was deemed dangerous, and that was the Viper Mk2 that shot plastic darts. Darts that would (if I remember correctly) get in children's mouths and choke them, and could trip people if they were on the floor.

We had a few of these but let me talk about the CSI kit - I’ve sworn for YEARS that on various places around our house, more specifically on some door handles and sink faucets, the dust/powder left a permanent finger print. My parents are just about to sell our family home, and it’s 2021, the kit was released in 2007, and those finger prints have been a permanent part of the house for as long as I can remember. This is the part where I wish RUclips could let me post images, but I definitely feel less crazy now that I know that kit was dangerous lol.

Everytime I hear of the aqua dots I always end up thinking of the fun beads I had as a child.
No water required, you put the beads carefully onto a pre made plastic board, (or the simple square one if you were feeling inventive), then when your picture was complete, you had to iron them until they were flattened and remove in order to preserve your creation for life (or until someone accidentally or on purpose tore it or squashed it and basically destroyed it).
I think they're still around now, but I don't think they're marketed as kids toys anymore, partly because of the tiny beads required and probably mostly because of the fact you had to use an iron to get it to work, and regardless of instructions stating you should ask an adult, I wonder how many children weren't quite that responsible.

  • @THEdragonOfRainbows
    @THEdragonOfRainbows 3 года назад +36

Okay I gotta point something out about the Aqua Dots case since that incident really fascinates me. In Australia, where I live, they were called Bindeez, and they actually won the Toy of the Year award before their recall because of how incredibly popular they were. The thing is, the glue in the beads being harmful was NOT meant to happen. The manufacturers were given the instructions and ingredients for making the beads, but someone thought it would be a good idea to swap the original (Non-toxic) glue ingredient for a cheaper alternative, without notifying the brand/distributor. This cheaper ingredient, however, was the one which metabolises into GHB when ingested.
Yes, it can be argued that small colourful beads are inevitably a hazard for ingestion by small children, but they would not have caused nearly as much damage if not for the cost-cutting done at the factory.
I recommend reading up on the incident; there's a really good article that tells the story of how Australian doctors discovered the link between these sick children and the beads.

A rather popular recalled toy that I and my step-siblings had as children was Magnetix. They were building sets that consisted of plastic rods and shapes with little magnets in the ends and corners, and metal balls to connect them all together. We used to play with them a lot, and found it rather annoying how the little magnets in the plastic pieces would come loose over time and fall out. Luckily we were all past the age of putting small parts in our mouths, because I found out many years later that Magnetix toys were recalled for that very reason, and had caused serious injuries and unfortunately even death to children.

I remember aqua dots so well. But that last one, I remember seeing something like that in the Amazing World Of Gumball when Mr Robinson tried becoming better for Gumball and Darwin and when rocky suggested kids toys, he pulled out a uranium maker kit like the last one and it blew up, violating 14 international peace agreements. I had no clue it was real and that dangerous

I’m surprised you didn’t bring up that one story about a nail under a slip and slide going through and ripping someone’s intestines out.
I’m not sure if that’s actually a true story, but it sure as hell scared me away from slip and slides.

Am I the only one who thinks that Cabbage Patch doll sounds TERRIFYING?!
Like, if I were in 1 mile of it, I would instantly putting my hair in a ponytail or bun.
Also, that doll gives another reason why I prefer stuffed animals and plushies to baby dolls.

on the creepy crawlers/thing maker, they had an even more intense version that melted down metal pellets into steel molds. turns out, on top of being a childrens toy that reached metal melting temperatures, the metal alloy pellets also contained lead!

There were also incredibly bad rollercoasters and water slides. #1 would have to be the Cannonball Loop from Action Park.

i remember i had a slip nd slide in the early 2010’s. it had a small hole in it, but we didn’t bother to patch it up as it didn’t hurt or bother anyone, until it was my turn to go on it. my middle finger got caught in the hole, tearing the hole as i slid down, not slowing down. the webbing between my middle and index finger is permanently scarred because of that! it did hurt, but i look back on it fondly because i knew i loved that damned toy.
