Is Forretress Bad? | Pokemon Crystal Solo Challenge

- I've had my eye on this one a while. Is it morbid curiosity or is it the fact that this little guy is always tanky in Koga's Elite 4 battle? Let's see if there's anything to this Pokemon in today's Crystal challenge.
Addendum:
►My understanding of Rollout wasn't the best in this footage. After this, I wanted to display effective power of Rollout and through my research here's the facts. One Defense Curl will boost all other Rollouts and you do not need to use it again. Effective power also caps at 999, meaning if I have the Hard Stone equiped and Defense Curl used, the 5th hit isn't 1,056 effective power. It just caps at 999.

I feel like rollout functions like how rage wanted to be an escalation then forgotten about
Gen 2 rage is pretty good! I covered it in detail in another run.
Rage is more of an early game strategic flex, in Gen 2 anyway. I think perhaps Rage is an alternative to Rollout with the drawback in exchange for the choice of not being locked in.
Gen 3 has it work differently and it's actually not bad. You still have to get hit, but it boosts your Attack stat 1 stage rather than the power of Rage. I've seen Nuzlockes get good use out of it.
You got that right. No way you'd keep it past Headbutt/Return phase of the game but we've seen even Flail look useful in the Lanturn run. Hell, Take Down in this one.
rollout MIGHT be one of the best "new moves" introduced into gen 2......
You have to wonder what was going through their heads when the gave Pokemon only normal moves in a game where they also gave the rival a ghost type.
True but they probably never predicted people would mod in Forretress and only use it the whole game 24 years ago haha.
I like seeing the split data. Sometimes when you talk about how long or difficult a split is, it's kinda hard to understand what you mean. Having it displayed like that really helps put a number to the pain/ease of a run. I also like how you did it today, once after the e4 and then again at the end. So, since you asked it worked well for me.
It messed up on the next run but I got a little program to auto record it now so the plans are to always record it from here on out.
Fun fact about forretress the only stab moves it gets in gen 2 are pin missile through breeding and hidden power
Another fun fact is that even the other steel or bug Pokemon don't use their STAB moves because they suck lmao.
Fantastic thumbnail 🤣 That Rival 2 grind was pretty rough, and judging by a lot of other Gen 2 solo runs I've seen, that can be a huge roadblock for a lot of mons as well.
Appreciate that! I really like the thumbnail appreciation lmao. I work hard finding TCG art and then redoing them on a hi res scale and adding my own coloring style to them.
The most underrated pokemon outside of competitive
That’s a bold claim, haha.
I enjoy the split data like at the elite four and the end
It’s important to look at to know where things took a while, etc!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 yeah and I think showing the splits around the elite 4 and after red is just enough to not over do it but still give us the info enough times for it to sink in
Sometimes there might be a point to talk about a split after but I think 2/3 times to make a point is good!
The sprite in the corner is always best along the can at the beginning Quality editing
Thanks!
Real One!
That was a good one. I was expecting more troubles but you really handled things like a Pro!
Honestly outside of the rival 2 shenanigans and the 3 or so fire types near the end, it wasn't bad at all!
*Sees no stab moves on the learnset. Sees Self-Destruct*
Just put me out of my misery
It was a fun run but it did take a while. The Bugsy split was brutal.
I greatly appreciate calling him "nut", it's definitely perfect
Yea, I thought it was simple and effective. I liked this run!
Did not realize how powerful rollout can get. That was a neat thing to learn however many years later. I like the split data, its cool to see where something stuggles vs is good.
Yea, I learned a lot about Rollout after the video ironically and next time we use it, we'll see the power go up in real time and all that. It should be interesting!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 can't wait to see it again
Scizor will be next so no rollout there but I'll make a point to show it for the one after that.
38:57 I was under the impression that the damage boost from Defense Curl lasts as long as the Pokémon stays out, so you’d still be hitting at 60BP on the first hit.
Edit: Thanks for the video!
It does! I learned a lot about rollout after the video when trying to implement effective power on it. One curl boosts it for the rest of the fight and effective power is capped at 999 in the games after testing.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I just refreshed the page, and dang, that was a fast response! I should have edited it to say “thanks for the video” earlier. 😭😅
I try to put addendums from time to time in the description but I've accepted long ago that most people don't look down there haha.
Hi GLM. Your a real one. I like the split data, it's good to see the progress of the run like that. Also have an idea for you to consider. I play solo runs on Yellow, but use a number generator to randomly pick a number, and that is the Pokémon I use. Could be a fun idea for a blind series one day...
I done that before! The problem is I at least need some prep. At minimum I gotta get a color themed overlay, 3 sprites for damage, and the learnset ready for everyone!
I'm doing a Pokemon Red speedrun with Hitmonchan, and boy I don't find it fun at all. I give you PokeRUclipsrs some props for being able to make a solo/speedrun video on a regular basis.
Also, Matt, GameFreak designed PP so that for the most part, weak moves or status moves have a bunch of PP and strong moves have less PP to balance out the battle system. Of course, there are a few exceptions, like Thunderbolt having 15PP at 95 power pre-gen VI and Vine Whip only having 10PP until gen IV and power of 35 until gen VI.
I'm also seeing that GameFreak also doesn't try to give all Pokemon STAB moves by default. For example, it makes sense practically for Forretress to not learn certain bug moves like Megahorn or Leech Life. They did give it Bug bite and Gyro ball, but Forretress also should have U-turn.
It has a solid moveset these days, but not here. Yea solo running is an acquired taste. First runs are rarely good and the refinement is what I find interesting.
I really love the layout with the gym leaders/bosses on top of the footage with their team. Great run!
I like it too and love to see a compliment on it! Glad you enjoy it.
Happy Thanksgiving, Mr. GLM! Just wanted to say I am thankful for your videos, they help me unwind after work most nights and it means a lot to me that you put so much care and effort into your runs!
Appreciate that, brother. Got some family stuff/finals coming fast and after I get some solid editing done on another couple of videos, I'm going to push it to the next level with a brand new overlay! Been working at it on the side for a while now!
Real one! That 2nd rival grind was rough, but I have never used or seen Forretress before so interesting to see how good he did in the later game
Yea if it got anything to help out or had just a pinch higher speed, this one could have actually been half decent. It felt really good most of the game outside of the very small amount of fire types during the end game and Rival 2. Everything else was solid. I even got to follow the 'optimal' speed run path.
Backsprite really looks like shelder on steroids 😂 great run
I don't think I've ever seen the Shellder crystal sprite but it makes sense!
Not sure if it's been said already, but the defense curl boost to rollout lasts until the user switches out to my knowledge. So, after one rollout ends, the first turn rollout would still be 60 base power without having to set up defense curl again. Not 100 percent sure if it was always like that but I believe that's how it functions today.
It does and one day we'll see it in action!
#real one! I'm so stoked youre doing the red fight now and counting the time! Also think you for not using curse. If i watch another crystal run that's just curse and rest im gonna lose it haha
I always did the Red fight, but didn't think it was fair to a lot of Pokemon that just need to level to obscene levels but I made some changes and I am willing to try it out!
Yea, curse is awful. I don't see the difference between it and enabling the use of the double team TM in gen 1.
Poor Forrtress game freak gave it a very level up moveset, without an access to a bug or a good steel stab move ,even though it would be outclassed by the mid game,it still could have helped a bit.🤔 You did a good job with the thumbnail, because it seems like Frorrtress knew that it going to be hard.😂😂😂
I love how you present the spilts for each run , it's easier to see how well a pokemon is actually doing, and also your timing with it is really good.
Yea this is the first time I’ve just be hard walled and forced to struggle in about a year. I think Raichu Yellow was the last time. With the split data I’m just seeing if I can find some more stuff people like and it’s always nice to hear positive feedback about it.
I got away from my roots and was just doing what everyone else did for Crystal runs and tbh I wasn’t having a ton of fun so dialing it back, lowering the game speed, and using the metrics that I like went a long way in making even a so-so run a blast to play.
I REALLY appreciate the thumbnail feedback. Out of all the comments I think there’s 2 counting yours. I repurpose TCG art and redraw it hi res with some changes here and there and in my color style. I think they’ve looked great for a while but they never get noticed haha. I was desperate for a compliment.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 it's good that struggle ever since gen 2 is typeless 😂or else that run would have required some cheating in order to complete that.
I kind of understand the point of reducing game speed to 3 times , because recently I did a run in crystal legacy in 4 times speed and I can't use the bike at all. I thought that would take me a while to get used to it . But, now I'm thinking about reducing the speed too.
And also whenever I like a thumbnail, I kind of get inspired by it. And it's a lot of work to make sure that the thumbnail is good and unique while keep developing your own style, is something that I admire a lot. And as a fellow creator, sometimes you'll need some kind of feedback to know whether you're doing it well enough, and what can be done in order to improve.😁
Yea, when it's time to play at x4 speed, I can do it for like a race or whatever but just for my own purposes and hobby enjoyment, it's too clunky. Crystal at x4 speed is just moving at the speed of light uncontrollably on the bike, menuing being a nightmare, and passing the place you want to fly 35 times. I recorded some raw footage for the next one and the real time was still about 1h 19m so the time you save on x3 speed just moving around better doesn't even make too much of a difference. Hell, 1h 19m on anyone's leaderboard would be solid at x4 speed. I just find my personal enjoyment and overall improvement at the game comes from doing what I like best rather than trying to fit into that already established Crystal box!
I'd say you have a very unique style already but I'd suggest Pokemon cards for pose inspirations. It's like an untapped market. I have a site I use sometimes but usually I'll just google 'Forretress Pokemon card' and flip through there until I find a pose on some 300x300 image I like and go from there.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Oh, thanks for that. I have a lot of nostalgia for the pokemon cards , because I used to own a lot of cards as a kid,and I used to play a lot of pokemon cards with my siblings. Ken Sugimori's art style is my favorite when it comes to pokemon. I wish that modern pokemon could have had that style too.
And flying 30 times to New Bark whenever you want to fly to a different place in the map, is a challenging experience.😂😂😂
Yea I'd love to be able to digitally reproduce his water color style. It's one of my favorites. I guess I could learn but there's about 8,000 things I'm trying to do lol. I'll just admire it from afar. For me, it's the worse when you first get fly and need to backtrack. Getting to Goldenrod is right in the middle of the paths you've learned and it's like going to the Game Corner trying to land on it the first time. Also when you get off the SS Aqua, you fly to Vermilion immediately to save time and just pressing down once on x4 speed is annoying. Now that I think about it, everything on x4 speed on Crystal is annoying lmao. Need to use a TM? Good luck not pressing left once but the game registering 3 times and have you click on the good rod.
Chuck brother! The struggling rollie boi ain't too bad.
It's really not. There were a few problem areas but most Pokemon will have some struggles.
Although I like the comparison of the 5th rollout with defense curl to hyper beam, maybe explosion will be a better analogy for this bagworm pkmn here, basically almost equal to 4 forretress going boom
That might be true but you just never think about self destruct/explosion in a solo run. They never cross my mind.
I thought forretress evolved from cloyster when I was playing as a kid lol
I always thought it was metal coat + trade
Indeed it looks like it or an alternative evolution
I could definitely see that but it’s just a little nut.
Heyyyy, you did do this one. Despite being a slow tank with meh learned moves, Forretress really pretty well for itself. At least till you get to Red. Interesting held item gambit, though.
And yeah, I did notice the gameplay was a bit slower than usual, now that you brought it up. Something felt a little different this time around, but I couldn't place it. I do respect trading the crazy speed for some precision. I think we'd all seen the misses on the bike and menus, so having those mishaps easier to avoid does seem helpful. Did you also get a new mic recently? I noticed your voice quality has also improved.
For sure. The options were to get to level 100 to outspeed the Charizard and spend god knows how long getting there, or rolling the dice and relying on the probability working itself out of getting two 23% chances in a single battle. If you want the math, it's roughly a 5.2% chance in a vacuum but probability states that even as early as attempt 11, you can approach 76% probability. I don't love it but it's something some Pokemon will need to think about now that Red will be mandatory on the grade.
As for the slowdown, you just can't really be that great if your practice is sloppy. Bumping around, menuing slow, and just generally slogging through the game inefficiently doesn't make anyone a better player. I'd rather refine the mechanics and pathing and just overall drastically improve at the game.
I have not got a new mic. I just make a point sometimes to sit at the correct distance, enunciate my words, and try to consciously articulate myself lol. Sometimes I just sit down, blab, and have no thought about how it's going to sound but I've been putting in more effort and doing more retakes.
seeing these mons makes me want to keep shiny hunting in heartgold. gen 2 is so underrated
Yea, I adore it. Some things I don't love but I enjoy playing it despite the flaws. It gets a lot of flak lol.
never knew there was additional boost on rollout after defense curl, 960 based power on the 5th turn, i guess nothing can resist with that monster level....
REAL ONE man!
Yea, I wasn’t completely right on it after research for some overlay improvements but if you use just one defense curl, all rollouts are boosted so you don’t need to keep using it.
Tombstoner brother!!
As always love your videos
Thanks, brother. Appreciate it.
I give that back-sprite nine pink walnuts out of ten!
That’s high praise!
7/10 i wish i could see his little tube things. Still a good back sprite, though. Ity bity walnut like you said.
Yea, I could have updated it but a lot of these Pokémon are my first real ‘go’ with them and I like to see the originals. They could have definitely made it bigger.
@GymLeaderMatt1987 i own the original cartridges for Gen 1 and Gen 2. I love that you keep them original, and i love it when you make cross gen versions that look as original as possible. As much as game freak could have made it bigger, I think your description of it being a walnut was spot on, and i loved it.
Gen 2, absolutely but in Gen 1 I do admittedly change it up a lot. I haven't kept gen 1 original in a long time. I use original, Green, Yellow, Gen 2, and Spaceworld Demo sprites and I've increased the banks in ROM creation to allow the use of actual 48x48 back sprites so I generally use gen 2 or Spaceworld back sprites exclusively now.
That Hard Stone bling looks pretty fly
It’s slightly crooked but I like it!
Road to struggle was a little struggle to watch. We feel the pain. Gen 2 really hates giving new Pokemon stab moves. I mean like you said Forretress doesnt have any fangs or claws and such but they shouldve just invented a move like lets say bug slam or steel bash or something.
For sure. It has a pretty cool movepool these days but it just got sucked under that awful gen 2 curse for this one but I made the most out of it!
Forretress is a real one, another one of my favourites, good shiny too
I got one but I kept it a Pineco for now. I like it better on that one but both are cool!
I like the idea but Split data kinda needs a reference point though. Maybe once we have the Mewtwo-equivalent of Gen 2, that can be used as a compare.
Hmm, split data was a program me and a guy came up with only a couple of videos ago so the full data isn’t there. I like the idea but I’m not going to manually go back and grab the old data. I’m really not sure how to utilize it to its fullest as this is the first run it’s in solo but I’ll think of something.
Dive into Blue, amazing music video! 🔵
If that’s a real video, it had to be a coincidence!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 it is, by J-rock band L'arc~en~Ciel!
You know rollout has great base power when it makes Shuckle look strong.
I also wonder if the pink bow boost helped you get a two shot against quilava at rival 2?
It definitely did! I only get it early in runs where it can save some time and that was a big reason.
I’ll have effective power for it soon!
Forretress is a mon that has little correlation between in-game and competitive performance.
Its a defensive utility mon, you put down spikes, wall some stuff, and then blow up, not traits that you want in-game.
It’s fun to see the disparity. I like this Pokémon though despite some of the bad parts.
I think the split process is pretty cool, especially when you have it more fleshed out
I’m good with where it’s at. More fleshed out in what way? What other splits would you need?
Forretress lets go. Ive abused gen 2 when i was younger, and i have never used it. They have got to give these tanks a little more special defence.
I liked the run. The problems were moreso caused by only normal moves early but the ending was brutal but Red without curse often is.
We seem to have switched philosophies lol I used to consider my randomizer runs done after Red while your runs stopped at Blue. I've recently realized that playing to Blue is a lot more relaxed and fun for my experiences, and you've started counting Red again lol I still go check out what he has on his team for kicks, and I'll most likely end up getting swept by whatever his ace lvl 81 is (Last time it was a Physical attacking Hitmonchan)
Originally it just felt like it took too long and you were just routing the entire run to gear up for him from the start but when I discovered you can trim out the awful trainer grinding, actually use candies, and then just run the elite 4 back a couple of times, I started to reconsider.
I'll be completely real and say that I think Crystal runs are the wild west and I don't think anyone is very good at them. Outside of the actual world record speedrun, I was putting too much stock into what other people do and when I stopped things got a lot faster. I'm the champ, after all!
But the key difference in what you said is that it sounds like you use a team and use a randomizer which are just two different styles but the game just feels incomplete without beating Red.
You'd be correct lol Exp management for multiple team members is definitely a key difference between that and a solo run. Grinding results are much more noticeable with 1 Pokémon as opposed to around maybe 3-5.
Yea solo running cures all. Even in a normal run I’d just use like 2, maybe 3 max. There was a no item at all challenge that allowed full teams and the fastest strat was to use 1 Pokémon and just sac swap for debuffs lol.
Loved this run
Thanks! It was fun.
the SelfDestruct joke killed me 😹
If you need a way out!
real one! i forgot the pikachu could be an issue since it's usually not important at all, this really shows Forretress' unique challenges rip
It’s an issue a lot of the time. You just see optimized runs and most Pokémon can outspeed it lmao.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 ah yeah that makes sense!!
Or if you mean channels as a whole, everyone else hoards rare candies, has slow runs, and then just pops on curse and don't care about attack drops lol.
Bug steel is a very good typing. Genuinely. But good lord did they do this bug steel type dirty.
Yea I’m gonna do Scizor for the next one to see the leap.
i just remembered the scene in the anime where guzma's golisopod flees from some fire move and then scizor is sent out.
Sounds like it ended well, haha.
I always enjoy grabbing a coffee over soda
Soda is metaphorical. Grab what you like best!
Always loved Forretress. Tanky little clam-cannon thingy. One of my favorites from Johto by far.
I like it too. Just in terms of a solo run I think I've been talking about the idea of it being tanky in Koga's fight has intrigued me for like 4 months lol. What a way to start a Crystal reboot.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Still. Great to watch your stuff as always. No matter what you upload, I'll end up seeing it
I appreciate that! If I pick up about 20k more of you, I'll be in business lol.
Should check if mud slap changes the run just for fun
I'll leave that to you. I've never gained anything from hypothetical movesets lol.
I love my precious pink brain boy, it's a shame his moveset is kinda horrible (in game at least) till later gens
Yea they give it earthquake eventually too on top of some new bug moves.
Great job
Thanks!
I'm not really surprised with Forretress's run. It's very slow and it has a so so movepool, also all that bad luck really was a thorn on it's side to boot. But nonetheless Forretress did it. So Good job Forretress also Real One.
Yea, the thing is that we don't know how bad/good it is just yet. I don't think it's great and why the decision to revamp Crystal metrics and this being the run it was on was just a coincidence. I'll probably run a few more and then start redoing some runs on stream. Then I can start a little calculation after about 10ish.
Feels like it's been awhile since I saw a new vid, long week I guess, I grabbed myself a whole pizza for this one
Only a week!

Unfortunately Fortress had no STAB in Gen 2 so it was horrible in-game. Weirdly Fortress was very good competitively in Gen 2 using: toxic, protect, curse spikes, leftovers, rapid spin, and/or explosion,
Even Pokémon that get STAB bug or steel moves don’t use them. They are pretty poor in gen 2.
bug type was one of a few types that just had to accept being shafted until Gen 4. You have Heracross and....a bagpipe thing that's good at taking hits under select temperatures.
Outside of that, the presence of Celebi and maybe Egg (Gen 2) saw Hidden Power Bug be the type's only other claim to fame 😂 Had there been a better move like X-Scissor or U-Turn it would have been really good.
I think I've used x-scissor one time in the gen 1 Scizor run and it was good but by the time you learn it, it's just alright. It's good against Eggy and Alakazam in theory but with Swords Dance and 130 base attack, anything could one shot Zam.
1/10
not only is it unimpressive, I might confuse it for shellder as well, adding to its ultimate unimpressive-ness.
If you look it, it’s really only a shell lol.
poor man's scizor

New York Pokémon center move is substitute. Not sure how useful that is. But it’s funny to see a gen 1 move like that on fortress:?
Makes sense to me. A stall Pokémon that sets up status makes me instantly think of substitute.
Gym leader matt is the best poketuber because he always does the post game. I HATE when people do run videos and neglect the "post game". why do they call it post game anyway? Its not DLC. It shouldn't be even CONSIDERED optional to run all the way to Blue and Red.
I will prob skip Stephen Stone in emerald. He’s like a mono type challenge and after early testing, doesn’t really fill the same niche as red.
2:35(ish) - id rate that backsprite a 2...as in, Bofa Deez...i mean, you called it a Walnut, i think it looks a bit...More-Wrong than that lol
Ha, if you are comparing it to women parts then you’ve seen some monsters lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 no no, thats Cloyster, lookin like a lady...im saying Forretress looks a bit Scrotal
A bit nutty, if you will.
Do you have to defence curl before every roll out? It's been a long time since gen 2 but I didn't think you had to.
You don’t. I was mistaken in the video. I put an addendum in the description but I figured all the ins and outs when working on effective power for the overlay.
I watched a speedrun where someone was using items and barely surpassed this time. When speedrunners and challenge runners are using the same strats, its for one of two reasons. The pokemon is naturally awesome or it sucks to the point there is no other option.
Sorry Forry, they gave ya power but it takes for god dam ever to set up and you might get killed before ya get there.
A run like this is just similar with or without items. You can heal an OHKO and the majority of resets was caused by that. In the end, it was ‘go to level 100, or get two quick claw procs and save 26 levels of grinding’.
Real one.
Appreciate it brother!
re: "Forretress's" - That's grammatically incorrect, that's why it sounds wrong. When using an apostrophe to denote ownership with a word (name or otherwise) that ends with S, you don't add another S afterward. The correct way to say it is "Forretress' run".
Yea, I was trying to be funny lol.
Its like shelgon
It’s like Shelgon without legs, different type, different stats, different color!
Yay
How fast are you watching this
@@MrBoneArrowTheEggRoll saw the chance to be the first one to comment
I fail to understand why they type things with 2 types and the ability to learn exactly 0 stab moves.
In the case of gen 2, or pre-gen 4 really, no one really uses STAB bug or steel moves anyway. Even if you got Iron Tail or Metal Claw or something like Leech Life, you still wouldn't use them since they don't really solve any problems. The early issue of Ghost would be helped with something steel early, but they resist bug. Fire types (the real problem) resist both bug and steel moves.
The real answer? Not all types are created equal and some types aren't very good offensively, bug and steel being at the top of the list.
