Thank you. I’d heard of folding quilts on bias before sending them to a quilt show but never saw how to do it. Loved how clearly you explained and demonstrated this. I will be refolding all my quilts this weekend.
I'm new to quilting, so this gets me off to a great start for folding my finished quilts. I have 2 that are gifts. I think I will fold them so that the quilt label with the baby's name will be facing out when they're unwrapped. I also have community and state fairs that I'll be entering a couple other quilts in this summer, now I can deliver them to the fairs safely folded. I also have a quilt from my childhood that needs refolding. I'll be right back.
Awesome!! I learned that every so often, you should unfold then refold your quilts a different way to avoid straining the fabric in the same spot each time, but I never know quite how to do that. Now I know I can do this instead! Thank you thank you!!! Oh, and tell Claire I said HI!!!
I never thought there was a right and wrong way of folding. Your explanation makes total sense I’ll be folding my quilts on the bias from now on. Thanks for the tip!
To be honest, I don't think there is a right way or a wrong way to fold your quilts. 🤷 I think everyone should do what feels good for them - I'm just presenting one option among many. I'm glad you liked the tutorial and hope it helps you have less-creased quilts! 👍
Hello I'm new here. Wow! I enjoy learning something new every day.! Thank you for this. I have 3 quilt tops waiting to be quilted. I guess I will go ahead and fold those on the bias.😊
Thankyou Shelley! Hadn't heard about this type of folding before, so glad I know now. I just refolded my quilts, and as an added bonus they stay tucked up perfectly and symmetrically, even taking up less space now! That means room for more!
I knew this was the best way to fold a quilt but I never could remember how to do it. Thank you for your clear instructions and the print out/ down load.
I love this! Thank you for explaining how to fold our quilts. This makes perfect sense but how many of us don't even think about it? Your tips and video was eye-opening!
I also created a step-by-step downloadable pdf document that you can print or view on a device. The link is in the description for this video. Happy folding!
Thank you. Your directions are very clear. My only wish is that you had folded a large quilt. My quilts are queen to king size. It was an aerobic exercise to get them folded. The square rectangle bundle I ended up with is very large. It takes up way more space. My smaller quilts folded up just fine. I don’t see a solution.
Good advice, solid technique. I "keep" very few quilts and those are used with regularity. I'm actually quite baffled by the concept of "storing" quilts for purposes other than for museum/archival purposes.
Great timing. Currently working on my second quilt so will pull out my one and only quilt and re-fold. Thanks for posting this now, my future self is very appreciative 😊
I saw Mary Fons talk about this years ago and began to fold my quilts on the bias…..but they still left terrible crease lines and looked even worse when I hung them because the creases were on an angle when the blocks where all square. I’m not sure why this happened. Anyway, I have rolled my quilts on empty upholstery tubes ever since. The downside is I can’t display them pretty on a shelf like you do. I still enjoyed your video though 😊
Thanks, I never heard of this. I’m about to send a quilt to our guild show, so I will do this fold. Also, will check for those creases before I do the new fold.
I’ve quilted for decades, but I’ve only heard of this quilting method in recent months-thanks to the internet. No guilds near me. As quilters, we understand why we should follow that folding method, but I think that many-most?- of our quilts are gifts to others or donations. We need to educate them. Curious…Do you send a note-or your guide-re folding with your quilts when you return them to your clients and others? Thank you for the pdf! I’ll definitely be I; clouding that when gifting future quilts! I’ve just subscribed to your channel, and I look forward to catching up hang up! Than you, and stay well! Muskoka ON 🇨🇦
OMG! Never heard of this! I just shared your video with my sister in Calgary Canada. Our mother and grandmothers were quilters. I have friends who belong to a local quilt guild in Toronto; they are getting this too!
@@matantequilting I shared it with an acquaintance. Her sister was an avid quilter and passed away a few months ago at the tender age of 69. Her sister Mary had shared this information and she had forgotten so she appreciated the reminder! Mary was my quilting buddy. I haven't started re-folding my quilts however I need to!
Thank you so much l have not seen this before. I have downloaded the instructions and subscribed. Now to refold my quilts. Cheers from Melbourne, Australia :)
I had never heard of folding them on the bias but it makes sense. I’ll be trying it out on mine tomorrow. Thanks so much. Why do you call your quilting company “ma tante”? Are you French? I am and it means My aunt, just curious to know about your name. Thanks again. I enjoyed your video. Very informative. Wait till I tell my French girlfriend from my hometown. We speak on the phone all the time and she’ll be very interested in your video. :)
Thank you!!! I’ve learnt something new, and I’m going to refold all my quilts!!! I love the quilt you used to demonstrate this technique on (plus signs I think) do you know the pattern name? Thanks Gill 🇬🇧
Saw a video years ago about how museums fold vintage quilts and they were on the bias. I never thought anything about it and pulled one of my quilts from my shelf and refolded it. it had already been folded on the bias but I felt needed to be changed for integrity. Just did iton the opposite end. No more creases.
Thank you for responding. I did the 3 folds and it worked beautifully on one of them. The other one is made of circles and smaller in width but it is folded better now. Thank you for your explanation. Great help!@@matantequilting
You clearly don’t have pets. I’m imaging doing this after aggressive vacuuming and a sticky roller, and still, there will be pet hair in my perfectly bias folded treasures 😂
I love your technique, and should have said so right off the bat@@matantequilting. We have multiple pets and the only fur-free surface is between the top sheet and the duvet cover of our bed. Thank you!
This looks like a great idea. What about quilts set en point? Should those be folded the 'normal' way since the staight of grain is already diagonal?
That is exactly correct! Quilts that are set on point should be folded the "normal" way in order to avoid harsh creases. 👍
Thank you. I’d heard of folding quilts on bias before sending them to a quilt show but never saw how to do it. Loved how clearly you explained and demonstrated this. I will be refolding all my quilts this weekend.
Woohoo! Let the folding marathon begin! 😂

How lovely! And don't forget to re-fold all the quilts (on different angles) every six months or so. That will keep them in tip-top shape. 👍
@@matantequilting Thanks! I'm hoping that these first quilts get used so much they never stay folded for 6 months.
Yes, I already do this, it makes so much more sense to NOT have those crease lines in my quilts.
I still get creases this way, but at least they're much easier to remove.👍
This was great! I just bias-folded my quilts before storing them for the summer. Thanks for this great tutorial!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video! Will plan on folding your way in the future!
I am blown away. Why am I just learning this. Thanks so much 😊
Haha, we don't know what we don't know! 🤷
Your directions are great. Going to go and do this right now 😊
Hope you enjoy, and don't forget to re-fold them every six months or so!

Haha, definitely not! This is pretty standard practice in quilt museums. 👍
Very good explanation! Thanks!

I already fold on the bias but not quite this method. Will definitely try it and will take this information along to my quilting group. Than you
Yay! Thanks for sharing, and happy folding!
Never even heard of this one. Thank you.
It's a great tip to preserve your quilts!
Great tutorial - I had heard this was the best way to fold quilts….will be using this method for sure now.

I think one of the key factors is to re-fold all the quilts occasionally (maybe once or twice a year?) The tubes sound like an excellent solution! 💡
Thanks, I never heard of this. I’m about to send a quilt to our guild show, so I will do this fold. Also, will check for those creases before I do the new fold.
Ooh, what a perfect scenario for bias folding! 🙌
Love the cat! Thanks for a great video, refolding all my quilts now;)

When my clients register a quilt for longarming, I include directions for folding on the bias. Most of them do it, but not all! 🤷
Thanks. I’ve never thought of doing this. I liked seeing Claire. We have some similarly marked cats. We call them “ Smeesies”- not quite Siamese.
Siamese-adjacent! 😆
Thank you

That's a great point! No matter how you fold them, quilts periodically need to be re-folded.👍
Great video! Thanks!!
You're very welcome!
This was very interesting for sure! How do you fold them to place on a Quilt rack? Mine are folded in half so you can see the borders.
I would probably do the first three folds, but make sure that the rectangle was skinny enough to fit on the run of a rack. Then hang it from there. 👍
Thank you for responding. I did the 3 folds and it worked beautifully on one of them. The other one is made of circles and smaller in width but it is folded better now. Thank you for your explanation. Great help!@@matantequilting
I will be REfolding all of MY quilts. Some hand cut, hand stitched AND hand quilted by my Mother in Law.
That sounds like a delightful time!
Very great tips thank you so much for sharing this, I have a question for you can if you fold it on the bias and hang it how would that work ?
You could try doing the first three folds, so that you had a long and narrow rectangle, and then hang it after that.
Can this method be used if you hang your quilts? I have more hanging space than folding and placing on a shelf. Thanks
I'm not sure it would work very well for hanging quilts, but you could easily give it a try and let us know how it went for you!
What brand are the cabinets that your quilts are in?
They're IKEA REGISSÖR cabinets. 🇸🇪
Do you do the same thing if the blocks in the quilt top are set on point?
I would not. With quilts that are set on point, you can fold them the "regular" way, and they'll be folded on the bias.
I noticed you had some rolled quilts in your cabinet. How do you do this please
After folding in the first three corners, I simply roll it up! Easy peasy!
Do you bias fold a quilt made on point?
I would not. I would fold any quilt that was set on point the "normal" way. 👍
You clearly don’t have pets. I’m imaging doing this after aggressive vacuuming and a sticky roller, and still, there will be pet hair in my perfectly bias folded treasures 😂
My cat actually makes an appearance at the end of the video .😹 If you'd prefer not to use the floor, this method works really well on a bed as well. 👍
I love your technique, and should have said so right off the bat@@matantequilting. We have multiple pets and the only fur-free surface is between the top sheet and the duvet cover of our bed. Thank you!
What if the quilt is made on point?
If a quilt is made on point, I'd fold it the "regular" way (and then it would be folded on the bias). 👍
I pre-wash and dry, then press before cutting. I don't have hard creases in my fabrics. This folding process doesn't appeal to me at all.
Okay, great!
Umm..can’t talk..I’m off to re-fold all my quilts….🧵
Haha, this is a common theme! ❤
Thank You
You're very welcome!
