    About Buster at MGM: the BEST thing about his time there is that he mentored a young actress who was trying to survive there as the studio just didn't know what to do with her. He taught her the basics of physical comedy and the importance of using props. Years later she credited Buster with the success she had - not on films, but TV. Yes, Buster taught LUCY everything she knew about comedy!

    I really liked this one. My grandma on the Italian side of the family used to sing a bunch of old songs and one of them was 'I don't care.' When I watched this film for the first time I thought...'Hey that's one of grandma's songs!'. Love the time period covered with the old Barbershop Quartet scene and it was a nice romantic film as well.

    OK, Judy Garland is my favorite singer and Joan Crawford is my favorite actress, so obviously loving your great movie selections and insights. In fact Judy outed me to my parents when I was a 13 year old gay kid that became obsessed with Judy and Liza. I was watching a movie with my parents when the flamboyantly gay character on the show (Tommy Smothers) said he LOVED Judy Garland. My parents both paused to look at me. Busted. All good, and a proud Judy fan to this day! I don’t care…I don’t care, what they may think of me!
    My unusual Judy story came in 2017. My partner and I travelled to LA, and stopped at Hollywood Forever cemetery. We went to the mausoleum where Rudolph Valentino, Peter Lorre, and Larry from “Bewitched” were resting, but we couldn’t get in. There was apparently a secret, yet high profile memorial happening. In fact, I spotted the hot, gay owner of the cemetery next to his hearse waiting for someone to arrive. His name is Tyler Cassity, and his documentary “The Young and the Dead” is what sparked the “Six Feet Under” series. It wasn’t until a day later that the news hit…..Judy was being moved from New York to Hollywood Forever. She was flown to California 2 days before, so I’m sure I just missed Judy’s reburial. I wish I had hung around longer. Did I miss Liza? Did I miss Lorna? Did I miss Joey? The timing was very odd.

      Your story reminds me of an except from a book about when people realized they were gay and one man said he walked into the livingroom when he was 8year old, heard on the news that Judy Garland had died and fainted. LOL! So dear! As for the Judy services...Well, you were there in spirit. I love "Hollywood Forever" and visit Ty Power and Clfton & Maibelle Webb whenever I'm in LA. Now I can vsisit Judy too! How marvelous! Happy Holidays! Thanks for watching! Best; Steve

    I never believed the rumors that Van Johnson was "gay" , but ater listening to this ,, well I guess it's true ! Well so be it . He's gone now . And we all loved his MGM films . He was a top movie star in his prime . And as for Judy Garland , she was one in a million and need I say more ! This is not on the list as one of Judy's great films , but it was a very pleasant old fashioned MGM musical .

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ
      @STEVEHAYESTOQ  10 месяцев назад

      I think it is one of her great films. It's perfectly constructed to showcase both her musical abilities and her acting talent ...and visa versa... and as I said, it's one of the few where the leading man, in this case Van, nuzzeled and kissd her with passion and sex appeal. The other is with John Hodiak in " "The Harvey Girls".

    Ah indeed so charming. Love this movie. Van is so sexy cute too. Most people forget Liza Minelli is the baby at the end of the story. Glad you brought up about Van's tragic car accident.. Liza mentioned (I"m good friends with Billy Stritch. her pianist/arranger) that Van was in terrible pain even after healing. He would get headaches and had neck tension. That is fab Steve you met Van.. I always wanted to meet him. And I so agree.. Van brought a bit of sex to the on screen romance ... Judy and Van got on great. I didn't feel the same chemistry with Fred in Easter Parade for example... though it is also one of my favorites.

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ
      @STEVEHAYESTOQ  2 года назад

      No, I feel that she respects Fred, but he doesn't wanna take her to bed. Van , on the other hand, is quite another story and the way he comes onto Judy in that last scene, Baby Liza was most likely conceived right then and there in the shop under the Christmas tree.LOL! Thanks for watching.

    Good Old Summertime is a good entertaining film. Great art direction among other things good on this film. A friend of mine said Buster did not do a lot of pratfalls on this, I somewhat agree but if he did, he will overshadow the leads. Anyway, I think the Van Johnson character did a mind f**k (sorry for a lack of a better description) on Judy. I would not be pleased if I was her. Also, I named my Apple computer from the 80s Buster. Steve, no mention of the violinist Marcia Van Dyke? Her performance of the once popular recital piece Souvenir of Moscow by Wieniawski has become one of my favorite musical pieces in any film. Marcia was the first woman to be first violinist with the San Francisco Symphony. I give Joe Pasternak credit for having a true musician in the part. Van Dyke synced to her own playing.
    Judy singing I Don’t Care (a la vaudeville) and Marcia’s violin solo are the high points of ITGOS. For me.

    Hey, TOQ.....loved ur review and concur 100%....great but not as GREAT as Meet Me In St. Louis. I’ve seen it soooooo many times. Piece of trivia...
    I am retired living in Waco, Tx....home of Baylor University where I went to school. Our Alma Mater is That Good Old Baylor Line....referring to line of alums down the years....we used to laugh as the tune seems perfectly set to the tune of In The Good Old Summer Time...download it and listen....good for a laugh as it will sound just like the good old summer time....

    Another fun review of one of my favorites. Are you rebranding? Follow your head and heart on that but just for the record, TOQATM is hysterical and lovely. I'd happily watch you do nothing but cut up for the camera, with or without a movie.

    Second-- Van Johnson was a little devil. I waited on him once in my early 20's. He goosed me with a wine bottle and then just smiled like a cat. Then I was shocked. Now at 61 I'm flattered. 😏

    Saw this film for the first time last evening. Garland is exquisite, but sadly the film lacks the charm and poignancy of THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER.

      I think it's the difference in the directors. The first one has the special "Lubitsch touch".

    Shame, shame. How could you not mention that Liza Minnelli makes her film debut in the last scene? (oh, my smelling salts!!!!)

    With the exception of Judy's numbers I like "The Shop Around the Corner" better. Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan really seemed to hate each other, so it made it more satisfying when they finally got together at the end. The barbs are more bitter, Frank Morgan's storyline is sadder and the young delivery guy is hilarious.

    Someone lucky enough to see both Robert Preston in The Music Man and Van Johnson in the London production of same confessed to liking Van Johnson BETTER in that role.

      Wow. Interesting. He was certainly versatile.
