The twin act special effects are done superbly. There is a moment when Bette Davis lights Bette Davis's cigarette that is STILL impressive today and back when the film came out audiences gasped aloud!
It was Oscar nominated for the effects and shoud have been. Ironically, Olivia DeHavilland did "The Dark Mirror" the same year, which also had great effects.
Oh for the days when actors actually acted, when they became the character they were hired to play. This is why people are so delighted watching these classics! Hollywood was at its height then. The quality in film was superlative, and everyone was professional. Thanks so much for being here for us to get the behind the scenes story of the Golden Era. It happened only once and will never happen again!

I watched it home alone at about age ten on cable, and was completely sucked in.

For me, the romanticism of Hollywood during the war years has never been equalled and I buy it hook line and sinker. I will give it another try. My favorite of Davis’ is “Mr. Skeffington” which I don’t think you’ve covered yet.
I’ve read her book and a couple of bios on her including the joint one on Crawford. Both are available here on TY.
They say this one was no different than any of her movies at her peak in that it Bette was impossible. This was after her falling out with Wilder and as much as she praised him I think Bette liked having a weak director she could manipulate. Some of the movies suffer because of this.
The movie makes me a little sad because as you said this was right at the end of her Warner Brother days. Times were changing and “women’s pictures” weren’t the sure bet they were in 1943. Still I love these mid-40s movies. I even like “Deception” despite it just being so melodramatic.
I saw her doing the lashes and clipping the speech in a movie the other day remembered your impressions. Hilarious. 🤣

That is EXACTLY what made her so fascinating. You never knew what she'd do next and there was always that explosive quality lying just underneath. There's a british documentary about Bette that takes it's title from a quote by Olivia de Havilland who describes her as " A Bascically, Benevolent Volcano" . Steve Hayes is the only film critic/buff/ historian I read or watch who can give away some plot points (bur Never the endings!) and make any confirmed movie fanatic want to see the movie immediately! He brings so much to these priceless videos : his knowledge of Hollywood back stories, the movie stars' careers and behind the scenes dramas that went on while filming, technical information ranging from how the films were made and the original music scores that accompanied these films , many by composers of genius. Steve's sense of humor is infectious. Like your favorite snack, you can't just watch one! I've seen may of his videos many times over, and my appreciation of movies is enriched incalculably This review of "A Stolen life" with the "two Bettes" is priceless!

She is my favorite actress too could watch her in anything and this a great movie too. Not my favorite but right up there with them who doesn't love a Bette Davis film is not a lover of movies!!! She was always mesmerizing and could draw you in even if you are not a fan of hers

Another famous twin movie that Charlie Ruggles was in where he discovers the twin deception was "The Parent Trap". He's the Boston grandfather who figures out that Sharon is really Susan. Also, one of my favorite Clara Blandick roles is in the Gene Kelly/Lucille Ball film "DuBarry Was A Lady" where she plays the little old lady who tells the story about marrying for love, and the twist is when she says, "Next time I get get hitched, it's for dough."
Charlie Ruggles and Clara Blandick...they definitely don't make 'em like that anymore.The throw in Walter Brennan and it's one of the reasons this movie sails...so to speak. Thanks so much ! Best Wishes; Steve

I so agree. One of my all time favorite Bette's and it should have gotten her another nomination. Everyone in it is perfectly cast. Irving Rapper was a much maligned and underrated director, especially by Bette.

Carol Burnett was a huge fan, had grown up with these films, did 'em all and most of 'em are pretty good. She was fortunate that they were still running the old movies regularly on TV at the time and people like my parents, who saw them originally, were still alive to recognize and appreciate the references. Great movie. Been a huge fan of Bette since I was a teen. Wish I could remember the first movie of hers that I saw. Whatever it was I was HOOKED! I have seen just about all her movies.

Later, when I moved to New York and "came out" I also learned from listening to older gay men, who idolized the great stars . There's just something about this movie- I think it may have been the first Bette Davis movie I ever saw on t.v. (unless it was "Dead Ringer") and it caught my full attention, seeing those two Bettes go at it. I've show "Stolen Life" on DVD to a couple ladies during the last few years, and they were pretty passionate about it ("I want to watch it again!" "Where do I get it?" "I did watch it again!" "Can I have it?"). I thought Bette was fun to watch and she clearly is having a ball, but I was surprised to see such a big reaction to it.
I think that has talot o do with the overall romanticsm of the films of the War years. It has a sweeping romantic feel from the story, to the production, and especially to that score. Max Steiner was as much a leading man to Bette Davis in this film, and all the films they did together as any male costarr she played opposite. Thanks for watching. @@STEVEHAYESTOQ Just finished a video tribute to Davis over at my channel, after mulling over the idea for many years. "A Stolen Life" is of course included among many Davis classics, but reviewing the films to gather clips, I was particuarly taken with Davis' amazing work in "Mr. Skeffington," and chose to write about it afterwards for my blog. Her performance therein is unlike anything else Davis ever did IMO, as she adopts a light but very deft touch to portray Fanny (including raising her voice an octave), and is incredibly likable as a result, as well as very moving when things get dramatic (you want to protect Fanny when trauma comes her way- she may be vain and selfish, but Davis also somehow conveys Fanny's sweet as can be despite her faults). Would love to see you cover this one at some point- Bette rocks it!

As always you gave an amazingly in-depth analysis of both the drama on and off screen that lends so much to understanding the film and the filming process; I particularly liked the clever bit about recognising the societal impact of WWII changing tastes and movie-going habits. Which explains a lot as to why cinema changed in it`s narrative style to appeal to a new sensibility; I had never before pondered as to why suddenly women on screen became so submissive, and apparently stupid, to appeal to the vanity of men; that Bette Davis suddenly became almost invisible until All About Eve.
Even then she didn`t do anything memorable for me because my mother would never have allowed us to watch What Ever Happened to Baby Jane; The Nanny; The Anniversary if they had appeared on late night scheduling?
As a young boy it always seemed an effort reconciling the cinematic Bette Davis, a staple of Sunday afternoon Matinees, to the made for television Bette Davis that popped up in programming like The Dark Secret of Harvest Home (I was a bit older & not in bed when televised) & Family Reunion.
Bette Davis blazes away like the Sun in both these series while the other actors, although doing a credible job, appear like distant stars in an inky blackness by comparison. Who else but Bette Davis could deliver the truly chilling denouement in Harvest Home when she produces those huge scissors with such understated gravitas and screen acting aplomb. Indeed, if Bette were a young woman alive today she would be the one banishing Sauron and declaring to Frodo: "...All shall love me and despair!"
I remember this film really turning me onto Dane Clark. Man, he was hot! I barely even noticed Glenn Ford.
I agree. Clark had a rough and dangerous sexuality. He got lost in the shuffle and didn't do as many films or have as many good opportunities as he shoud have had. He usually got starring parts in "B" films ("Whiplash") at Warners and character parts in "A" films and war pictures ("Destination Tokyo", "Aaction In the North Atlantic"). he later did alot of TV. I remember him most for the film 'Embracing You'. Few people know of this beautiful, but largely forgotten, film but try to find it. He also had strong performances in the films 'Deep Valley' and 'Moonrise'.
Katharine Hepburn did a TV remake of 'The Corn is Green'...it was WONDERFUL- George Cukor directed it. 1978/79

Have you thought about doing a video on the beautiful actress Capucine? She had a rather tragic ending. IRL she was a lesbian but ended up embarking on a two year love affair with William Holden. (He was probably hard to resist!) They remained friends until his death...you probably already know Cap was the muse of producer Charles K. Feldman. Her besties were Audrey Hepburn and Hubert de Givenchy. A very interesting, gorgeous woman who had a tragic life and ending. My two favorite films she did was Walk on the Wild Side (best opening credit scene ever) and The 7th Dawn. A real tear jerker that one.

I love "walk On The Wild Side". IT's one of those "daring' 60's sex/dramas. Nelson Algren, same author as "The Mn With The Golden Arm'. I’m a huge Bette Davis fan, but I always found A Stolen Life boring, except for the supporting cast, especially Dane Clark, whom I thought had better chemistry with Bette than Glenn Ford. I love your channel, though! Can you possibly review Mr. Skeffington, Deception, Beyond the Forest or In This Our Life? I think those are 4 underrated Bette Davis movies. My intro to classic films came with The Little Foxes. My favorite is Bad and Beautiful..because I love love love Gloria Graham, so sexy..and the way Lana Turner just hammed it to the hilt. I loved it. I really miss my friends that I would hang with and watch these. We would quote lines, read between the lines . Well , just wanted to say thanks for the channel. It cheered me up today.

Steve, what's the Davis' line? "Who comes first? Me or Max Steiner?" I remember the day you first said it to me...
It was when they were shooting "Dark Victory" and she was about to make her final exit up the stairs for the bedroom finale. She asked director Edmund Goulding: "Is Max Steiner scoring this?" He replied tepidly that he wasn't sure. She said something to the effect of: "Well, I may be going up those stairs and Max Steiner may be going up those stairs, but we're damned well not going up together." And of course, they did. She later lamented, "He had the angels singing before I even got half way up the staircase."
