I remember being taken to this in 1974 as a 10 year old by my parents, both of whom were Christie fans. We went to an evening screening, which I'd never done before. It was my first 'grown-up' movie experience. I was utterly enthralled.

Albert has always been a favorite. He really brought out the affectations and vanities of Christie's iconic detective. And what is more important, that fear of aging, and surly nature. He is very "continental" and what is most important doesn't permit himself to be a grotesque version of them. He is in every sense of the books Hercule Poirot.

    Steve,
Thanks for this terrific review! You really did justice to this wonderful film.
The virtually unrecognizable Albert Finney was, in my opinion, THE BEST Poirot! I wish he had played the Belgian detective in future Agatha Christie films (e.g. "Death on the Nile"). Was never a fan of Ustinov as Poirot.
I recall seeing this film with my entire family in my hometown's theatre during its original run.
And the score! What a masterpiece! I play the soundtrack in my car often.
Only 4 of the original cast members are still with us...
I look forward to more of your great content.
    Best always,
    Paul

Hey Paul; Thank you so much for your wonderful comments. I love this film as well and so did Agatha. She finally got to see a film of her wotk that she was really enthusiastic about . I love Sidney Lumet, he could do anyhting and his whole concept of going for the glamour, made it such fun, right down to the light. & lovely score. I've always been a big Christie fan...in fact... she died on my brithday in 1976. Have a wonderful 4th. Please subscribe if you haven't and stay SAFE, Buddy! Best Steve

Sorry to be late to the party, but I just wanted to say, having read the book I think this is the film which sticks closest to the original source material. Also, when Agatha saw the 1940s American version of 'And then there were none', where the ending is changed, she did say that it was a better ending than the book and she'd wished she'd written it like that. Finally, years ago I won a contest at work and the price was lunch on the restored Art Deco Orient Express coaches. I was in heaven and I have to say the set designer did a really excellent job. Art Deco can be so badly done in the movies.

This is such a gorgeous film. The fabulous cast, the luxury of the train - and the score was brilliant, because the moment it begins you have the feeling of a powerful train in motion. You set out on a journey with the passengers, and everything that happens comes as a surprise. So well acted, by everybody, and I think Wendy Hiller wore almost as much make up as Albert Finney, because ages later I saw her in a play on television and she looked decades younger than her age. You're so right about Agatha Christie using real life events to inspire her plots (including "The Mousetrap") and whilst this plot is obviously to do with the Lindbergh kidnapping, the actual stranding of the Orient Express in a snowdrift also really happened. She travelled on that train and would have known all about it. I love Peter Ustinov, who played Poirot in the successors to this film, but Albert Finney was the only Poirot who incorporated his limp! No wonder that not long after this film came out an entrepreneur set about finding as many old carriages as he could and having them renovated so that travelling on the Orient Express could become a reality again. There's a whole industry in England still devoted to finding the old carriages and restoring them. And would you believe that the first class carriages all had women's names? A cast to dream of, a perfect Poirot and all the glamour of that train. I beg you, Steve, don't subject yourself to Kenneth Branagh's massacre of the same plot - wearing a dead animal under his nose and sitting outside the train in a lounge suit surrounded by CGI snow and ice - no, I won't think about it, I'll just watch this wonderful film yet again. Best wishes, Alida

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ

Not to worry, My Dear Friend. I avoid the Branagh versions. Chiefly because they don't begin to have the glamourous casts and they make Poirot ot to be a studly/macho hero. I realize the it business aspect of the Christie estate, trying to conform to the times and keep the franchize alive, but not by making it into a rip off "Indian Jones" & Marvel. Although I think Braangh is a solid film maker at times, I loved " Belfast" and " Henry V" and he did a nifty imitation of Olivier in; " My Week With Marilyn". All in all, I think he's ' a legend in his own mind". Now as to " Murder On The Orient Express". I Loved the excentricity of Finney. I was delighted by the humor of Ustinov. But I adore the meticulousness of David Suchet. Further more, I think the reason the first three of the all-star vehicles were so effective was the result of Sidney Lumet and his insistence that it be a delghtful/ glamourous homage as well as a classic mystery. Being an old movie fan himself, he was fortunate enough to be able to pick from an array of the stars he grew up watching. He set the tone for all the others. If anyone really deserves the kudos for " Muder On The Orient Express", it's Lumet. In addition...no, I'm not done yet.Sorry... I think if anyone of the character actors should have been nominated, it should have been Wendy Hiller, Anthony Perkins or the brilliant Rachel Roberts. Hope your summer is delightful so far. So nice, asl always, to recieve your wonderful comments. Give my regards to the #29 bus and wonderful Trafalgar Square. Steve

Just watch out for Lauren Bacall & the rest of the gang. 😅 I had a friend who was Lauren’s dresser on the National Tour of WOMEN OF THE YEAR and the stories along with her antics would curl your hair. In her defense she was a middle aged woman fronting a very long & physical show, 8 times a week. This may explain why she was in such a bad mood so much of the time. And there indeed is some truth to the fact that the producers had to pay members of the cast to show up to her birthday party. Half the cast wore garlic garlands with silver crosses under their clothes whenever they approached her. And she broke up with Harry Guardino during the Tour which all added to the ‘drama.’ My friend would recount the fights backstage which were awful. Lauren to Harry one night, “Lest I remind you that you are nothing more than a supporting player in a show that stars me.” Harry responded “You f**king pr**k, I’ll kill you!” My friend said that he swore at her as if she was a man. She made a joke and said technically Harry should have said “You f**king c**t.” It made for a weird year and a half on the road. The cast & crew actually got flak jackets from the local Army surplus store in Detroit and had them monogrammed with I SURVIVED THE WOTY NATIONAL TOUR. When asked if Lauren wanted one she said “They were for hunger and she’d die first before donning one of those monstrosities.” She was definitely a character.

This movie is escapist paradise. I grew up on Agatha Christie, so when this showed up? Perfection! Cracks me up that Mr. NYC Sidney Lumet was cleverly hired to direct such a British production, always seems to me to be the flip side of his Twelve Angry Men (spoiler!). Love that he gives his all star cast a curtain call at the end. Between this and The Shootist, Lauren Bacall is unsurprisingly moving playing widows. Because Bergman took the "lesser" role, Lumet decided to shoot her interview without cutting away from her. Because he let her run with it, when they were done she gave him a big kiss. And they gave her the Oscar!

I too have absolutely no interest in the recent remake or update or whatever they're calling it.
I'm so glad that Miss Christie liked this film and Albert Finney's incarnation of Poirot. Is it true that she was not a fan of the sixties Miss Marple movies, considering Margaret Rutherford miscast? A pity if so, because I adore the great Rutherford as Miss Marple!

Great review steve. This is the best adaptation of the story, no doubt.Yet another example of an English lead actor not winning the Oscar because....they make it look EASY. i.e O'Toole, Burton, Harris. The exception being, ironically , Paul Schofield, who preferred theatre.

MRS. HUBBARD (WANTING TO ESTABLISH THE KILLER'S TIME-LINE) TO HERCULE POIROT: "Can you give me any reason WHY a man would be in MY room?!" PRINCESS DRAGOMIROFF: "I can think of NO...OTHER...REASON..." And, THAT, dear Steve Hayes, is what is called--today--a "very slow burn." Such a classic... Soooo much better than the Kenneth Branagh version, where he seems to think Poirot is a kind of Bond with moustache, rolling in the snow with heavies... I mean, seriously! And now he goes on destroying "Murder on the Nile" and utters the threat to have a go at other Agatha Christies... Arrgh! Give me THIS version anytime.

Far better than the recent remake, The 1974 version is a bit slow after a good beginning and there's not a lot of suspense; no one on board seems concerned that there is a murderer on the train and by the end you'll know why. Elegant production, game cast and Finney is terrific.

Love Agatha Christie and this version was my favorite. The Suchet version was too dreary, depressing and ponderous. As for the Branaugh version, the less about that absurdity the better. He plays a music hall version of Poirot. I shudder to think what he would do with "Death on the Nile" - just who can compare with Peter Ustinov, David Niven, Maggie Smith and the legend Bette Davis.
In the book, the director's name was Bouc, a Belgian, like Poirot , but in this movie his name was Bianche, played by Martin Balsam who I thought was hilarious. His Italian wasn't bad but the gentleman who plays Foscarelli spoke his few lines in Italian very well.
