Ronald Coleman and a party of kidnapped refugees from a war torn country find themselves crash landed in the Himalayas, rescued and taken to a hidden valley called Shangri-la in Frank Capra's classic LOST HORIZON (1937). Taken from the novel by James Hilton, the story deals with a man who discovers paradise and doesn't know whether to give himself over to it or battle his way back to a civilization from which he was relieved to have escaped in the first place. Coleman was at his romantic best in this film and Capra, having just won an Oscar, never attempted such a visionary film again. Lost footage has been salvaged and somewhat restored from the original print and the result is a remarkable film with a subtlety and spirituality all its own. You'll be moved and mesmerized by the hauntingly beautiful LOST HORIZON.

My mother would have been about 17 years old when Lost Horizon was released. I remember her telling me about it with extraordinary affection. She absorbed the romanticism, the escapism, and the truth of the altruism that is the core of the story. Her enthusiasm for Shangri-la as a source of enlightenment was matched only by her love for Ronald Colman's voice. When I saw the movie, years after she died, I understood her praise of it, and why she was so insistent on life being about love.

What a lovely ememory. Thanks for sharing it. I think it had that effect ob alot of people. It was made during the great depression and was about spirituality and surival and was very rare for the time. It made a lsting impression on me as a child. That score and the finale shot when he sees the entrance to Shangri-La, it's pure Hollywood and I cry every time!

This book by James Hilton is my chill out read..when life becomes too much, and I often snuggle into bed with it..the copy is in tatters. Loved the film with Ronald Colman. Always heart warmed to see it, maybe because like many people..I suspect a place like this might...just...exist..:-))

Instantly recognizable. It was imitated for the voice of Toucan Sam in the "Fruit Loops" cereal commercials in the '60's as well as the gorilla in the cartoon version of "George Of The Jungle'". " George! Watch out for that tree!"

One of my top 10 films of all time, absolutely great story, beautifully scripted and filmed. The re-release of the restored film had much of the deleted sequences either put back in where possible or represented by still photos when only audio was still available. This is one you'll want to keep handy in your personal separate library to watch again and again.

Hope this film is NEVER forgotten. It is really unfortunate that the original version has so many lost scenes/footage. The restoration is okay. Frank Capra made his best film with this one. Unforgettable! The remake I never saw and can't imagine it being better than this one original.

Hi! Thanks for watching. Both films are on my definite "To Do" list. There was nothing like that Coleman voice. All the great voices seem to be gone. Coleman, Cary Grant, John Wayne, Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Claude Rains, Margaret Sullavan and later Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn and on and on. Totally distinctive. You knew who they were in a minute. The development of a distinctive voice was as important to them as any other part and they worked hard to create it.

Dear Steve, This film has such heart and emotion, typically of anything by James Hilton, on whose book it was based, and how lucky we are that it has survived, because it has a perfect cast and, as you rightly say, it's amazingly shot. That the truly ghastly 1973 musical version disappeared without trace was the best thing that could have happened to that travesty, but isn't it amazing that a film as old as this is still so perfect. James Hilton's books and the films made of them are always about the best of human emotion and I love them dearly. Thank you for reminding us of this. Best wishes, Alida

And that incredible voice. Unmistakable. I laughed out loud years ago when Kelloggs used his voice for the cartoon character Toucan Sam to advertize " Fruit Loops" cereal. Well I think that this review was an most appropriate response to the movie. Why 'Do a Margo' when there is no point?, the great joy of Steve's reviews is that they are not only fun but very informative and they give you a real idea of the movie with out any spoilers. I know many people who have come to love these movies from Steve's reviews. Stick to your format Steve you are great.

This is one of my favorites from the 1930s, The opening prologue said it all when it asked whether you've ever wanted to live in a place of peaceful delight? Because of its cost, it lost money for Columbia in the initial release, but I think---more than any other film that studio made in the 1930s---that it was no longer a second rate studio. Back then, Columbia actually made Hollywood's best comedies, but it's ability to make a grand scale drama was in question. Yet, when you look at the amazing cast, Stephen Goossen's Oscar-winning sets, the Oscar-winning film editing of Gene Milford and Gene Havlick and the magnificent score by Dimitri Tiomkin, under the direction of Max Steiner (on loanout from Warners), there could not have been any doubt any more about Columbia as a major studio. The "Torch Lady" was carrying a pretty good torch.

I've watched this movie and appreciated what it was, but still I love the color and vibrancy of the 1973 version with Burt Bacharach score/music. Yes, the Capra's version was more dramatic and incredible for the day....but just love the 1973 version a wee bit more. Probably because of my memories associated with it. Going to the drive in with the family in our 1968 Barracuda fast back with all us kids load in the back with sleeping bags watching it with wonder. Wonderful music numbers I can sing (in the shower only...wouldn't risk alarming dogs from 5 blocks away LOL). Surprised you haven't reviewed that version. Or maybe I missed it? In any event. Movies like these are timeless. Brigadoon is another (sorry, anything with Gene Kelly in tight pants is a winner to me), that follows similar story lines. A man, between worlds a brother/best friend pulling him back to the rat race and to ignore pure simplistic paradise. Given what's going on in the world today? I'd jump at the chance...and sing (albeit badly) all the way to Shangri-La or Brigadoon in a heartbeat.
Seriously? Just searched your reviews...no BRIGADOON? Get with it mister. Would love to know what you think. :)

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ
      @STEVEHAYESTOQ  2 года назад +1

Yes. A lavish, all-star musical version produced in the early '70's by Ross Hunter with music and lyrices by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. It bombed terribly and reunied the Bacharach David relationship. I like it though. Everyone seems to be having a good time. Best; Steve

The supporting parts in Lost Horizon aren't up to par with the remake. Thomas Mitchell and Edward Everett Horton are over the top and hard to watch. Also, unlike the remake, Capra's Shangri-La focuses on opulence and rich decor. It beggars logic, how did the porters get that GRAND PIANO up that hill and what's with the FLASH GORDON automatic doors? In contrast the remake focuses on humble furnishings and all things in moderation. The basic theme of the novel.

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ

In have discovered over the years that there are many forms of Shangri-la's that are revealed to me in the most unexpected places. They are the places and people who I love, inspire me and bring me serenity. For example, whenever I feel blue or conflicted, I find myself strolling through the shelves of The Strand Bookstore here in Manhattan, which specializes in used and out of date books. I am instantly put at ease just gazing at the titles and occasionally picking up a volume here and there. Total peace and contentment. Or sitting in a park with someone who knows and loves me and makes me laugh at myself, which is always healthy. As the man says at the end of the film in so many words: " I hope he finds his Shangri-la, may we all find it." Happy Summer, Lynn. Best Steve

@showstartsatdusk The remake focuses on all things in moderation? Really??? You are speaking of the epically miscast, grotesquely overblown, musical abomination, mega-bomb from 1973? The one that laid such an egg at the box office it was called "Lost Investment"? The one that it's own producer, Ross Hunter, acknowledged as a total failure? That one? Really? Well, I guess somebody had to like it.

    • @williamsnyder5616

Nemesis---Good points. Not only that, producer Ross Hunter was so embarrassed by the failure of the remake that he quietly retired.
