CLASSIC MOVIE REVIEW: Spring arrives with one of the most heartwarming films in MGM history, Clarence Brown’s “National Velvet (1944), starring Mickey Rooney, Elizabeth Taylor, Donald Crisp, Angela Lansbury and Oscar winner Anne Revere. Taken from the novel by Enid Bagnold and filmed in glorious color, the film follows the dreams of a young English girl (Taylor) and her beautiful stallion known as “The Pye”. With the help of a rough young trainer (Rooney) and a wise and gentle mother (Revere), she is able to achieve her dream of entering “Pye” in The Grand National, the greatest horse race in England. It’s nostalgic, heart stopping, sensitive and beguiling. So, sit back and fall in love with “National Velvet.”

I think the reason I watched this for the first time as a kid was because of Mickey Rooney. I loved his movies so much.
Anne Revere was always the most wonderful moms on film!
She had a small yet powerful role as a mother in "A Place in the Sun" 1951.
Steve--Thanks so much for the spotlight on Anne Revere. The best "mother" of Hollywood in the 1940s. People need to see how she perfected the motherly role. And thank you for bringing up the McCarthy Era and how it affected this great actress...
She was quietly magnificent. The Blacklisting was so dreadful and the loss of the artists and their work! The loss of more wonderful performances, scripts, directors is staggering. Someone's always persecuting someone about something and then it eventually comes out that the persecutors were far worse than their victims. Thanks for watching!
My only complaint: free riders! Hey, at this time, 64 views and only 14 likes. Come on guys and gals, Steve deserves our positive vote. No other video channel flashes such glitter!
THANKS SO MUCH!!! It's so important to "like" the episodes! You're the best!
Steve and Johnny, your positive energy and sincere love of classic films are so refreshing in this cynical age. Thank you!
Many thanks!
Steve Hayes is one of the most knowledgeable movie reviewers and his enthusiasm for what he does is terrific!
Thanks Walter and plsase press the 'like' button, it really helps.
National Velvet has always been one of my favorite films and Steve, you touched on absolutely everything I find wonderful about it. Yes, the supporting actors especially Anne Revere are brilliant. Yes, the back and forth between Mr. and Mrs Brown is charming. Yes, the skill of Clarence Brown, the director is excellent (he also used Butch Jenkins and Rooney in The Human Comedy 1943). Yes to the score also being excellent. Herbert Stothardt, film composer is rarely appreciated or acknowledged. It is often said he is too corny and that may be true but I like corny movies and his music makes my emotions pay attention. Yes, you even notice the MGM endings being magical, larger than life and they certainly are. Your reviews are always terrific but I especially enjoyed this one. I first found you because you were on TCM once and were very entertaining.
My favorite movie of all time is Flight for Freedom 1943 Rosalind Russell playing a fictional Amelia Earhardt. Also Fred MacMurray. Not shown on TV in 30 years it is at last available on Warner Bros DVD. Its a terrific movie and I hope you can check it out.
Thank you for your wonderful comments and enthusiasm . Please press the "like" button it really helps. Thanks so much for watching!
On your rec, just saw National Velvet. You were right. Elizabeth Taylor and Mickey Rooney were great. But I loved the parents the most. Anne Revere and Donald Crisp were so good together and inspirational as supportive parents. Wow. It was tremendous. I will recommend to others. Thank you.
Oh, I'm so glad! I just love this film. If there ever was a hearwarming picture from beginning to end it's this one. Clarence Brown was such a brillinat director of amily films. check out "The Yearling", "The Human Comedy" and for romance/adventure, "The Rains Came'. Anne Revere's win in "National Velvet" is still one of my favorite Oscar victories. Happy Summer; Steve
Your enthusiasm for the movies is infectious. No script, you're expressing your love and it's comes through so well. You're an amazing story teller. You make me want to watch or re-watch these wonderful films.
Hooray! I'm so glad! Mission accomplished! Thanks so much for watching! Steve
TCM should hire you!
We really should start a petition. He's so charismatic and knowledgable.
+Elizabeth Andres How TCM or AMC haven't given him his own show, is truly a mystery, his knowledge about classic cinema, and sweet natured stories were made for television. HIRE STEVE!
Thanks so much!
@@emmaduncan2991 LOL! You're are a riot, Emma! Thanks so much for your enthusiasm!
Still looking good Steve and keep it up! Love your vids!
Thanks a million!
Seeing this really brightened up my shitty day. Thanks, Steve!
Good! Keep watching and many thanks!
Thank you, Steve! Your review really did justice in capturing the heart and spirit of this very special movie.
I love your reviews and save them up to watch when I'm craving a delicious treat, like a handcrafted chocolate truffle. ♥️🍫🎬
Oh my goodness! What a lovely compliment! Thank you so much for watching! So appreciated! Steve
Always love your videos Steve, you are such a joy!!! Love to hear you talk about Classic Hollywood and all the behind the scenes trivia. :)
Thanks John! Please press the 'like' button. It really helps.
This is a wonderful film and a great showcase for Elizabeth Taylor. But my favorite performance of hers during those early years is her supporting role in Jane Eyre.
Loved Anne Revere! I think Otto Preminger gave her 1st role after blacklist in "Junie Moon", and she was still flawless.
She was a total pro. She won a Tony award for her Broadway role in Lillian Hellman's "Toys In The Attic" in the early '60's.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Thank you for reminding us on fb that it's Carroll Baker's birthday today (I'm the guy on fb without a beard--it turned white, so I shaved it off...or it fell off, either one).
You should mention it has one of the most exciting horse races ever filmed.
It certainly does and the outcome you long for!
Steve, you are one of the very BEST things about RUclips! :-) Love 'ya 'ya big lug!
GOSH. I'm speechless...well, hardly...but very garateful! Thanks so much!
So glad I found your channel. I remember loving this as a kid and was wondering if my niece and nephew would enjoy it. I’m sold :)
Well, it's hard to say. It has one advantage being in color. Young ones, don't cotton to black & white, much to my dismay, and it depends on how old they are. I passed it on successfully to little girls. They tend to have a phase where they are into horses. It's like fishing, sometimes, if the bait is good, and the fish are biting... Good luck and thanks for watching. I hope you subscribe, are doing well and please stay SAFE. Best Wishes; Steve
On the list of the many reasons why I love Steve........starting at 6:10 illustrates my main reason: His beautiful, loving HEART.
WOW! This really made my day! Thank you so much, Ginny. What a lovely compliment and thanks for watching!! Have a lovely, healthy and above all, SAFE New Year. See you at TOQ at the Movies! OXOXOX Steve
I still think MGM should've hired Mr. Ed....JUST KIDDING! Bravo again, Steve, for a marvelous review. Everything about this film is MGM at its best. And, I'm glad for your observations about Anne Revere, Hollywood's best mother, strong-willed but always warm and supportive.
Dear William; Yes, that was the year of the "Self -Sacrificing Moms at the Oscars" Joan Crawford won for "Mildred Pierce" and Anne for "National Velvet". They off- set that by giving the male Oscars to alcoholics; Ray Milland in "The Lost Weekend" and James Dunn in "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn". LOL! Thanks for watching and stay SAFE. Best Wishes; Steve
Steve, how did you decide on this gig? You're so perfect at filling us in on the goings on in hollywood!!! Love you!!🏅♥️
Movies have always been my great love. I've been an actor/comedian for years. My friend/director/ author Vincent Cardinal said; "I think you should be a household name and I think I know how to do it. We'll come over to your apt, full of movie nostalgia, sit you in a chair, hand you a classic DVD and have you talk off the top of your head about the movie, like you do at every dinner party. We'll put it on YouTUbe and release one episode a month. What do you want to call it? Without missing a beat, I said; " Let's call it what it is; " STEVE HAYES: Tired Old Queen at the Movies" and ...voila! Thanks for watching! Steve
OMG Steve after your review I must own this. I never gave it a thought thinking it was for kids. Your honest review brought a tear to my eye. Thanks.
My pleasure and what a pleasure this film is, from begining to end. Perfectly cast. Would that all children grew up with as loving, firm, wise and supportive a parent as Anne Revere is in this. One of the most deserved Oscars. Elia Kazan later wrote that, in retrospect, her performance as Gregpry Peck's mother was the only thing he still liked about "Gentlemen's Agreement". Confidentially, as to this film, by the time Velvet rides to the top of the hill at the end of the movie, to tell Mi at that his father coached her mother in her swim across English Channel and that score rises in triumph...I'm a mess. Thanks so much and Happy Summer! Steve
Love Anne revere in song of Bernadette and gentlemen's agreement
Kazan said in his memoirs that her's was the only performance he still liked in "Gentlemen's Agreement".
Charming. Made me cry. A loving tribute to a great film. Your enthusiasm is contagious! It is one of the best. Clarence Brown also directed the great The Human Comedy, William Saroyan’s classic story, Louis B. Mayer’s top favorite movie and certainly one of mine. Have you reviewed it here? The movie has a large, incredible cast including Mickey Rooney, Jackie Jenkins, an unrecognizable Darryl Hickman as a kind, lonely bookworm, young Robert Mitchum as a soldier, Fay Bainter is Mom, Ray Collins her deceased husband who visits her, Adeline DeWalt Reynolds is a dear librarian, Van Johnson, Donna Reed, Frank Morgan, Barry Nelson, Don Defore, Juanita Quigley. Morris Ankrum, Hobart Cavanaugh, James Craig, Mary Nash is a wise teacher, Byron Foulger is a track coach! Clem Bevins, Alfalfa Switzer, so many more, including the great actress / humanitarian Marsha Hunt, who is doing very well today at age 104!
"THE HUMAN COMEDY" is on my "to do" list, I love it. Thank you for yhe lovely compliments and for watching! So appreciated! Happy Summer! Best; Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Oh, you're welcome, Steve. I love the clip you played of Elizabeth in Jane Eyre where she just radiates kindness. Very happy that The Human Comedy is waiting in the wings! Remember the scene where Mickey delivers a sad telegram, and the mother who receives it goes back in time for a moment? OMG. It's a killer. Thanks for educating us so entertainingly!
@@Daisnap My favorite scene is the one where the elderly/kindly librarian Adeline DeWalt Reynolds, takes Jackie and Darryl through the library and shows them the wonder of books and the excitment that's in store just waiting on the shelves. Did you ever read the novel? Brilliant. Again, Clarence Brown was the perfect director. He knew how to handle sentiment with a deft and knowing hand. Best; Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Never read the novel. I’m sure I would love it. Yes, that library scene! Dear Darryl giving Jackie the royal tour: All these books….See, there are big books and little books, red books and blue books…All these books…Then Adeline appears with her gentle crinkly smile and gives them the scoop - what’s inside the books are pretty good, too!
@@Daisnap Magical.
Steve Hayes: If I choke up seeing your review of "National Velvet," what's going to happen to me when I see this film? This is one of the great classics I have never seen.
You are going to LOVE this movie! When it ends you find yourself going" Awwwww" and feeling like you've just finished a great meal. Do not waste another moment and watch one of the GREAT family movie of all time. Brilliantly directed by Clarence Brown, who did "The Yearling " the following year and cast to perfection. There's a reason this was always Elizabeth's favorite movie. To misquote a Bette Davis title; " All This and Anne Revere Too" Thanks for watching. Stay well, stay happy and above all, stay SAFE.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ The Yearling was also magical. One of the most beautuful scenes of all time when Jody found the fawn hidden in the bushes.
My other favourite scene was Velvet waving goodbye to Mi Taylor in National Velvel when he was on the train and she was galloping alongside on The Pi.
@@Imforthewhales You can't beat Clarence Brown for lovely sentiment.
Loved this! Will watch tonight - Thanks you guys!
Thank you Please push the "like" button.
I am always so happy to see your uploads! Wonderful as always!
Dear Steve, as the Grand National is being run tomorrow, I thought this might be the right film to thank you for reviewing. Angela Lansbury has said since that she'd never seen a girl with such lovely natural colouring and beauty as Elizabeth Taylor, and I can well believe it. I could never forget her exquisite face as the girl who dies in "Jane Eyre" and this is a lovely, heart warming film about what is actually an incredibly tough and gruelling race. Elizabeth Taylor was simply incredibly beautiful from childhood onwards, and a wonderful actress, when she had the right material. May I just add a little titbit for you? I know you go to other places in England besides London when you visit, and I wonder whether you have been to Oxford, and a little town outside it called Woodstock? I ask because much of the Jane Hickson Miss Marple "Nemesis" was filmed there, and because I used to stay there long ago, in an hotel which had little cottages behind it, so that you had a home and not just a room. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton used to stay there when they were married, and a chambermaid told me she'd scream at him because he always ordered kippers for breakfast, and they smelled to high Heaven. But it was when they were happy, so it's nice to think of. Thank you for forgiving me for going on and on about troubles - I was scared to death I had driven you away. Very best wishes, Alida
YDerest Alida; You never drive me away and I'm always glad to hear from you. I went to Oxford, Warwick Castle and Stratford-upon-Avon my first trip to London back in 1999. In 2018, I vsiited Sussex and The Seven Sisters , which I loved and last year, I visited Bath and went to Brighton. So, I manage to get in some side trips thanks to the generosity of my friends. I adore the UK. I'd love to see the village of Woodstock. Coincidentally, the village I grew up in and just returned from visiting in upstate New York, is called " New Woodstock". Four generations of my father's side have lived there and my parents are buried there as well. Of the Joan Hickson " Miss Marples", "Nemesis" is my favorite, along with " A Murder Is Announced" . As for " National Velvet", Clarence Brown was one of the most underrated directors. He's so sensitive and the films are breathtaking. He's not afraid of sentimentality, which I love. Along with "National Velvet", I love; " The Human Comedy", "The Rains Came", "The Yearling" and "Intruder In The Dust", these are just a few examples of his masterpieces. My favorite performance in " National Velvet" is Anne Revere. Her scenes are so heartfelt, wise & touching. I feel it's one of the Oscar's most deserved wins. So tragic she was blacklisted , as was Oscar winner, villainess supreme, Gale Sondergaard, among so many talented others. The stupidity and insufferability of the people who run the government over the years is astounding. Sorry...carried away. Have a lovely weekend! Best Wishes; Steve
What a terrific job of reviewing a really strone, heart touching film. Thanks for taking me there again!

nope- Man 'O War didn't win the Triple Crown....he didn't run in the Kentucky Derby- his owner didn't like running in Kentucky, but he won the Preakness and Belmont. The word Upset became known as when an underdog beats a favorite- because his 1 loss was to a horse named Upset- before that it just meant upset stomach or I'm upset/angry/sad about something.
Great revue Steve!
Glad you liked it. I like this one too!
Anne Revere was great, and very different than her role in A Place in the Sun.
Her role in "A Place In the Sun" was her last before she was blacklisted. They cut out a substantial part of it before the release. So sad.
Great as ever.
Take care.
You too. Be safe. Be well. Many Thanks.
Wow Angela Lansbury is stunning!
Hey Steve could you review a Blake Edwards film? Any one will do!
I searched Steve's channel couldn't find BAT
I'm still waiting for Johnny Guitar.
@Just think It's on my list!
@@victoriaindigo Bat is good - real good.
"Enid Bagnold"...what a name! 😁
Yeah...that's certainly a name you'd want to marry to get out of.
Still waiting for this on Blu-ray in a restored print. One of the greatest from the MGM vault of classics, and Elizabeth Taylor was perfect, showing how unfair the bias can be regarding child performances somehow being "lesser" than a big dramatic performance by an adult star. Taylor did impressive work later of course but, as Pauline Kael once opined, I don't think she was ever better onscreen than what she pulls off here.
She didn't either. It was her favorite film. When I went to see here jwels in New York the only personal career items they had that meant anything to her were her two Oscars...she hated the first one for "Butterfield 8" and her original script for "National Velvet'. The final shot in this one always makes me cry, when she rides to the top of the hill and Micky is whistling and walking and that scre rises to the fade out, I am always a mess. And I LOVE Anne Revere. Thanks for watching!
luv this guy!
Steve - we love you, Merry Christmas & Happy 2016!
I love Steve Hayes!!! YES TCM is missing out. Great review but every single one of his is super. Keep it up, please--Steve and Johnnie....

You getting emotional made me emotional!
Thanks. to quote the late , great Pauline Kael; "I Lost It At The Movies". I think that comes with age, the older I get, the more emitional I get, especially over things that move me deeply or that I feel stronly about, both of which the old movies seem to cover so brilliantly . I'm also an incurable romantic and all I've listened to for years are movie scores, so that undoubtedly feeds the emotional sides of my character as well. Take care; Steve.
so much great info - I really enjoyed this video - I'm not a huge fan of this particular movie but I was probably too old when I first viewed it...although I still love many of the Shirley Temple movies...go figure...I subbed your channel and looking forward to more...

"I could be sick all night if I want to!"
Love this. But, that's Best Supporting ActRESS.
Oooooooookay.
Technicolor you can eat with a spoon. Ann Revere - I dare you to find one minute of screen time in which she is not 100% there. And Steve notes, Mickey Rooney is grossly
under-rated as an actor. Tennessee Williams called him one of the greatest actors in American film. (!)
You are so right. Rooney get's shuffled under the rug because he was around so long and did so many things. But he WAS MGM during that period. Tenacious and taleneted. The ultimate combination! Thanks for watching! Please push the "like" button. It really helps!
Anne Revere's blacklisting is even more tragic since she is a descendent of Paul Revere.
Duuude!! Why are you not working at TCM!!
Dunno. I was a guest presenter for their 20th anniversary, so I did get to introduce "THEM!" with delightful Robert Osborne, whom I adored.
The assassination of JFK, the explosion of the first space shuttle and were you were when you first saw liz Taylor's face, your mouth had the same "O" expression.
Still does! LOL! Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Sorry. I meant to say really strong in terms of story, acting, camera work, directing, everything!
whats your fav Taylor movie Steve?

@@STEVEHAYESTOQ oh wow YES! And she looks amazing in that Oliver Messel black dress.
