I was getting ready to watch SNL back in the 70's when my brother informed me that we would be watching this instead, I was determined to hate it, 10 minutes into Errol Flynn had me charmed off my feet!
Which is as it should be. LOL!
Steve...you should have mentioned the score, done by Eric Korngold. It's unforgettable and adds so much to this wonderful movie. Thanks for your work.
It is unforeggatble and won the Oscar! Thanks for watching! Don't forget to push the "Like" button. It really helps!.
You need to share this with all of us in the USA. This channel should be on one of the major networks on television. Don't you agree... (?)
I would love that, but it's not up t me. Thanks for watching! Don't forget to push the "Like" button. It really helps!.
No one can wet the appetite for a classic movie like you, Steve! You should have a show on TCM.
I so appreciate this, David! Thanks for watching! Don't forget to push the "Like" button. It really helps!.
No Robin Hood movie made since has equaled it, let alone surpassed it. Great review of the epitome of Classic Movie!
Thanks for watching! Don't forget to push the "Like" button. It really helps!.

@@MsKK909 Hooray! So glad to hear it! many thanks! Steve
With such a marvellous cast this film can not fail to entertain.
Great movie,my favourite Errol movie along with gentlemen Jim .lovely review as always, you and your team are a delight, stay safe in this weird time
This was STILL standard kiddie matinee fare in the late 1950's when I first saw it and loved it. Technicolor you can eat with a spoon!
And go back for seconds!
Steve, thank you for this and for all of your wonderful reviews and backstories, as much fun as watching the films themselves.
And thank you for watching! I'm so glad you like them and appreciate you letting me know! Have a lovely Labor Day weekend! Best; Steve
Just as we are charmed, thrilled, and delighted with you, Mr. Hayes. HAPPY NEW YEAR 🤩
The Big Show of the week when i was a kid , on at noon on Sunday out of WKBW during the 70's
It's a favorite! Errol is superb!
Love this movie. Saw it as a kid on a Saturday afternoon in black & white. Now I want to watch again in Technicolor. Thanks, Mr. Hayes.
You are in for such a treat! It's one of the best early color films ever! Sumptuous!
This is one of my favorite films! I've seen it numerous times, Errol and Olivia were a beautiful couple!
They were indeed!
Loved it as a kid. You don't review enough films!
Green tights and glittery bits on the sleeves. Sign me up.
Olivia de Havilland and Errol Flynn never had an affair. She told me herself that she had been terribly infatuated with him but he was married or too busy chasing skirt & trousers to ever pay attention to his co-star/colleague, the kid Olivia.
"in like Flynn"
From what Steve said, I never thought their "affair" never went beyond the flirting stage.
@@emmaduncan2991 Thank you, Emma!
Ah, Errol Flynn. In another lifetime, I would have tapped that in a minute!
From what I hear, he probably would have 'tapped"back! Thanks for watching and stay SAFE! Best wishes; Steve
The extras were paid an extra $10 (and a boxed studio lunch) a day to take an arrow in the chest. Their costumes were padded out with thick layers of balsa wood!
That's fascinating! Thanks!
God save the (Tired Old) Queen! Great review for a great movie.
You are so sweet! Yes, God save all the "Tired Old Queens'"at the movies and otherwise! Thanks for watching! Don't forget to push the "Like" button. It really helps!.
Dear Steve, I don't know whether you will ever find this comment, but (besides thinking this film is amazing, and a feast for the eyes) I don't know how else to find a way to respond to your comment about Olivia de Haviland, re "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" "The Adventures of Robin Hood" really is a sensationally cast film, and today you can only goggle at it, because such a gathering of famous actors, as versatile as this, is so rare now. Errol Flynn was perfect in the lead role - so gorgeous, so athletic, and I think you're right about his "making acting look easy". If only he hadn't drunk so heavily and wrecked his health he might have lived far longer, and gained the credit he was due. (My favourite far later version of the legend is "Robin and Marian" with Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn, which is so touching.) Of course Olivia de Haviland is perfect in the Errol Flynn version, it was exactly the kind of role she liked to play. Melanie in "Gone With The Wind" while Vivien Leigh burned up the screen as Scarlett - again that's right for Olivia. And in "The Snake Pit" she's a victim. Of "The Heiress" (which I think marvellous) you said that she and Ralph Richardson didn't get on, which really surprised me, because he wasn't only a brilliant actor (admittedly known at the time of "The Heiress" more for stage work in England than film roles, despite a great success in "The Fallen Idol") but he really did usually get on very well with other cast members. And, although eccentric, he was rather a darling. In the late 1970s my mother and I used to walk in Regents Park in the summer, and I remember him walking down from a beautiful house there with his little dog, wearing a panama hat and using a stick, and beaming at everybody. He didn't particularly want to be acknowledged, he just radiated good humour, and he'd regularly encounter a stately elderly black man, also in a panama hat, also with a stick and a little dog, and they'd wave their sticks at each other and burst out laughing. Sorry, back to Olivia de Haviland - Bette hugely respected great and rare talent like Mary Astor's, but Joan Crawford had built her film star career on playing strong bitches, which wasn't Olivia de Haviland's forte, and maybe Bette thought she'd be far more comfortable with Olivia and not Joan Crawford around in "Sweet Charlotte". I've written all this dripping with perspiration because of course we have no air conditioning here, and it's hot. The whole of central London has been festooned with Pride flags this month, and this weekend there are events all over the place, but sadly I'd faint if I went out in it, so all I can do is to wish everybody well, as I wish you, and send my greetings. With very, very best wishes, Alida
I like Robin Hood and yedy it's perfecty cast. As dfor Raph Richardson, I think the dislike was more Olvia's than anyone. She was jealous of Wyler being awe struck and enratured by Richardson's technique. And Olivia wanted his full attention. Wyler was sly thoyght and may have wanted to do this because it would cause her to feel alienated and put
a strain on her relationship with Richardson , which worked for the characters relationship in the film. I visted Richardosn's grave in Hihgate Cemetary when I was in London in 2018. Loved walking through and hearing all the stories from our little gay guide, who loved telling delicious tales out of school about all the occuopants. No, back to Olivia. Though I love her in many things, Olivia got a bit grand as she got older, which got on my nerves. Granted, Joan, could be equally grand, but she could also cut to the basics at the drop of a hat, which she does several times in "Baby Jane" and suddenly get honest and be very real. I loved that aspect of her performances and would have loved to have seen what she did in "Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte. " Yes, the PRIDE flags are flying here as well. Last night, I went to see a special restored screening of Powell & Pressburger's marvelous; "The Small Back Room" starring handsome and wonderful David Farrar, marvelous Kathleen Byron and a cast that incluides Jack Hawkins, Cyril Cusack, Robert Morely and lovely Renee Asherson. Powell's widow, Oscar'd film editor Thelma Schoonmaker -Powell was there and gave a delightful intreview. Afterwards I got to talk with her briefly and she adored Kathleen Byron as much as I do. A magical evening. Stay cool if you can and as always, delightful to hear from you, My Friend. Best; Steve
I LOVE Errol Flynn.
You amd me both.
I (heart) you, Steve! I was just thinking this morning that I needed a TOQ fix. I've never watched this one all the way through, however, I will put it on my list and try again. Thanks and have a lovely holiday season.
Thanks for watching! Don't forget to push the "Like" button. It really helps!.
Steve, you're absolutely amazing. And this film is so wonderful--about time you brought us Errol and Livvy! You're a star in the heavenly fermament!
These days, I'm more of a fermament and I ain't sure how heavenly! Quarantine and eating are taking their toll, he said biting into another peanut butter sandich. Oh well, hope you are well and SAFE! Thanks for watching! Don't forget to push the "Like" button. It really helps!.
Lovely to have you back Steve.
I love your reviews. They cheer me up. And you're right about Errol Flynn. He should've won an Oscar for this. He did finally receive credit for reinventing the action hero and setting the template, for which he is still the gold standard, for the sound era.
Too little, too late. They just took him for granted and filed him under "bad boy".
This is by far the best and most popular of Errol Flynn's great films of the 1930's and 40's. It was nominated for best picture in 1938 but lost best film of 1938 to one of director Frank Capra's weaker films 'You Can't Take It With You' which hardly anyone can remember today
@@michaelverbakel7632 Oh, I remember "You Can't Take It With You" very well. When I first saw it in about 1968, the free spirited atmosphere of Grandpa Sycamore's household fit right in with the attitudes in old houses rented by hippies during the Counterculture Era, especially in Berkeley, CA. However, you are right both then and now: "The Adventures of Robin Hood" was the better movie and Flynn should've also won for Best Actor.
Thanks Steve, another great review :D
I've seen so many great movies that I might never have seen except for your recommendation.
I did a brief double-take at Alan Hale. I thought hey it's the skipper from Gilligan's Island! Alan Hale Jr. sure looked a lot like his dad.
Yes, you are correct. Alan Hale, Jr. did greatly resemble his old man.
When I first saw Alan Hale, Sr. in "The Prince and the Pauper" (in an elementary school auditorium prior to a school vacation, when we got to see great films with kid appeal from a projector) I thought to myself "How can 'The Skipper' still look so young in 'Gilligan's Island' as he did in this old film from the 1930s?" I hadn't then realized at first that it was the elder Hale was in that film and his son who was in "Gilligan's Isle."
Hale, Sr. also has a scene-stealing role in "it Happened One Night," that Oscar-winning film with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert.
Alan Hale was an inveterate scene stealer. Flynn used to say he had to keep his eye on Hale, because he could steal focus at the drop of a hat.
One of my favorite films but you didn't mention the Korngold music which is so good it has been used in many films since.
In the days when I made this episode, I was limited by time, . My apologies. I adore Korngold, especially this score, " Kings Row" , " The Private Lives Of Elizabeth and Essex" and espcially " Between Two Worlds", which is one of the most hauningly, romantic scores ever. . What would Warners be without him?...Or " Star Wars" for that matter. But, that's another story. Thanks for watching! Steve
I love Steve Hayes. Happy Holidays and wonderful, healthy and fun loving New Year!!
Another excellent review Steve,it's so good to hear from you again.
What a joy to get an email that you have a new movie review!!! Missed you, Steve! Have a very Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Still the best Robin Hood Movie adaptation.
I totallu agree! Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Love this movie. Love Errol Flynn. There’s a scene where one of his men is sent to look for the man sent to kill King Richard and is hurt. In the background, if you watch carefully, you’ll see a black sedan pass across the shot. Gotta love the movies!!!
Wow! I'll have to cehck this out! Thanks for watching!
By all accounts, ol Errol had quite a reputation but he's a great, handsome actor for sure.
IHe was indeed!
Fun fact: Alan Hale was the father of Alan Hale Jr. (Skipper on Gilligan's Island).
Excellent review, Steve. I'm a big Capra fan, but there is NO way "You Can't Take It With You" wins Best Picture over Robin Hood. My favorite memory was seeing it on the big screen at the Castro Theater for a 75th anniversary of Warner Bros. The theater is sold out and the organist is playing Korngold's theme music before the lights dim. I'm sitting in an aisle seat and across from me, a young lady's head is bobbing up and down to the music. When the movie starts, she tracks down the organist and thanks him for the best theme music ever written.
I TOTALLY agree! On all accounts!!
Enthralling and entertaining....Flynn WAS Robin Hood!
Man, I need to see it for Christmas! Thanks so much Steve!
Absolutely! Thanks for watching! Don't forget to push the "Like" button. It really helps!.
This is the only Robin Hood. The rest of the remakes can’t even hold a candlestick.
I quite agree.
Poor Olivia! It's always tough when your leading man is more beautiful than you are. Patric Knowles as Will Scarlet also gorgeous here.
She had the same problem with Monty Clift, Alan Ladd and Bette Davis... on several occasions. LOL! Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Alan Ladd was SO hot. He just oozed quiet, understated sex appeal.
Welcome back, Steve! You look very Bea Arthur-ish with that incredible head of hair. I love your show! Thank you for keeping me entertained.
Don't tell Bea! Thanks for watching! Don't forget to push the "Like" button. It really helps!.
Errol Flynn needed a stern taskmaster like Mike Curtiz to keep him in line. Otherwise he was prone to goof off. They hated each others guts.
Some of the greatest films ever made have come about at the hands of people who couldn't stand each other. That was pretty common in Hollywood,.
Cagney as Robin Hood?! However, I loved this movie as a kid....
So did I, and it still holds up!
The host is a funny man 🤣🤣🤣 Yes, ug was really good movie.
Thanks so much for watching! I hope you subscribe. Happy Holidays! Best; Steve
A classic. Though I like The SeaHawk better.
Great also!
👏👏👏👏👏
Jimmy Cagney😳
Jimmy Cagney as Robin Hood? uh-uh, nope.
Steve what about Doris day move over darling
I may do "Pillow Talk" down the line. Thanks for watching! Don't forget to push the "Like" button. It really helps!.
Harvey 1950 please
I'll put that rabbit in my "To Do" hat. Steve
DROOLING OVER ERROL AND I GET JEALOUS WHEN HE HAS LOVE SCENES WITH OLIVIA B/C IT UTTER MOVIE MAGIC.
I don't think it is easy to play a swashbuckler and make it believable. To me, only Tyrone Power (Zorro) and Errol Flynn (Captain Blood, Robin Hood & Don Juan) could do it on the big screen!!!
I totally agree with you, My Friend! And both were underrated and were SO handsome to boot!!! Thanks for watching and have a great and SAFE remainder of Summer. Best; Steve
