That's the most incredible description of the Loch Ness Monster I've ever heard.
These lovely people are so gracious, so charming witty and smart-well it's like a visit to another civilization altogether.
I would be careful about reading _too_ much into this. That they're charming, witty and smart is undeniable-but it's also television. Don't think of this is a documentary of an average person's Sunday night in 1957 America. (Not that you did +eoselan7, but I often see people forgetting that it's staged entertainment.)
eoselan7 People were far more cerebral then, I would say.
Sarah I was born in 1945, and lived half my childhood until we got TV. However I well remember these great folks. John Daily was a news reporter going back to the 1930's and continued to do so when TV began in 1948. These people were the Genuine article and were very relaxed and down to earth people.
Sarah says not "to read too much into this. That they're charming, witty and smart is undeniable - but it's also television ....staged entertainment."
"Staged entertainment"? ....Well, it's not like they were play-acting. Because it was television, the thought was that they should be on their best behavior. ....And, the point is, people were generally taught to behave in a classy way at least in certain circumstances. (Think of how young people behaved at school dances, etc., back in the Thirties and Forties when these particular people grew up.) ....My grandfather was in radio (WLW in Cincinnati) back in the Twenties and Thirties. Even appearing on a sound stage for RADIO, they were expected to dress up. It was thought that the act of dressing the part would affect your manner of speaking and general demeanor that was carried over the radio waves.
No, this manner of behaving is not acting on the part of these people; this was the way they were raised to speak and behave in certain circumstances, especially in mixed company.
The idea that this mode of behavior was somehow "inauthentic" is one of the by-products of the counter-culture of the Sixties. Being on "the national stage" (or even being in your local church or at a formal function at school or a dinner function at your place of employment) - but especially in a place with "ladies" present - was thought to be reason enough to 'dress up' and speak and comport oneself like a gentleman or a lady.

I still cannot understand why the atrocious actor Kevin Costner took on the role of Robin Hood. He was on a loser there.
Originally James Cagney was the first choice for Robin Hood. Cagney was great,but all wrong.. and Errol was all right!

Mr. Flynn passed from us to our regret in 1959 so as of this airing he had another 22 months, but what a legacy of talent!
That was most kind of Scotland Mayor to Visit America and Canada to remind those of us who are Scottish of our coulture with his accent and costume and vast knowledge of Scotland.

@Marrowbones After Olivia de Havilland died in July, I listened to many videos about her, and then Errol. One of the videos said the US Army discovered TB in his lungs, along with many other diseases which he most likely got in the Tropics. I really do feel sorry for him. He didn't get much guidance when he was young, which he really needed.

I'm with you. You might like to read one of the 3 books he wrote titled "Beam Ends," about his real life sailing adventures. You're most likely to find it in the rare books section of a major public library. He was an excellent writer.
Errol Flynn has and always be my idol. They just don't make me like him anymore. I JUST KNEW he was going to kiss the ladies' hands upon leaving. What a tragedy at this airing he would only have a scant two years to live. Born in 1909 and died in 1959. He was liked and admired by men and women alike, and worldly, largely doing just what he wanted to do, and was admired for it. I was born in 1949, and during the 1950's I wore my parents' black and white television out kissing the screen every time Errol Flynn was on. 💋
And if you watch GENTLEMAN JIM you will also see that Flynn also had the footwork and movement of a real boxer. To have that kind of athleticism in addition to matinee idol looks doesn't seem fair to the rest of the mere mortals out there....lol

@georgevincent1834 Flynn was a fine boxer. He boxed in his youth in Australia. He was perfectly suited to the role of heavyweight champ Gentlemen Jim Corbett. It's one of my personal favorites of Flynns' films.
He famously accepted a boxing challenge in Hollywood from director John Huston, also a former boxer. Huston apparently bragged that while Flynn may beat him in a sword fight, he'd beat Flynn in boxing. Reportedly, Flynn boxed Huston's ear off him. Lol. I would've loved to have witnessed that!

Given that Errol Flynn is soon to die after this appearance, knowing that he had so many things wrong with him, I think people should afford to give him some slack over his appearance and demeanour. Legends are not built out of common sense and doing the right thing, and you can't have the legend without the human faults & fallibilities. The legend is what people covet, that's the paradox! Just for a moment, here is Flynn in the flesh, not behind a movie screen, and you see something of the humanity of the man, albeit, desperately tortured and suffering. Give him a break!

Errol doesn't need your or anyone else's evaluation any more than role-modeling. Same as Elvis or anybody, all people over 100 IQ has healthy "honorary" thing going :p
Excellent and empathetic comment and from my point of view very close to the realities of Errol and his life at that time. However, I do not believe that he was drunk or that there was anything wrong with his demeanor. He was playing a part and trying to be cunning with his mannerisms and in his answers. He was indeed a legend and a man of extraordinary intelligence and spirit. They don't come along often and we were gifted with his presence.
The panel is an excellent example of civil society.

Errol was in his last days here, and it seems like he had something going on. He was great in his day, and lived more in his 50 years than any 10 lifetimes. RIP Errol Flynn!!
I remember reading that Maureen O’Hara worked with him around this time and said he was often drinking heavily and taking pills, and that he was a very tragic figure.

Errol passed the yr. I was born 1959. He was a gentleman. See him kissing the lady's hands. Heard stories about him, but it just added to the romanticism of him. He was a very attractive man when younger. Rip!
I read his book back when I was a teenager. He lived a truly amazing life and had an incredible style. Physically, an almost perfect specimen.

1957 was my father's last full year. We didn't know on December 1 that he only had 3-1/2 months to live. He was operated on January 1, 1958 at Baylor Hospital in Dallas and was found to have inoperable lung cancer. We brought him back to Waco where he died on March 17, 1958, never got out of bed again. He was only 59. He had been a Buick dealer and loved the beautiful cars of the 50's and that era. He had also loved the cars of the 20's like Hupmobiles and Locomobiles when he and my mother were newly married. He was every inch a gentleman, always dressed to perfection. This is when I was in junior high. He would have killed a man had he known he'd hurt a lady. He couldn't have lived very far into the 60's as they would have been repellant to him. He would rather have died than to have done something to bring attention to himself in public and he always said you never discuss personal issues in public or talk about anything to do with sex when women are present. My mother lived another 39 years and died at 94 in 1997.
My condolences for both of your parents! It's a hard yet unavoidable thing to deal with; loss.... 🙏🏻🇺🇸

Errol was so loved. Not sure he really understood how much! He gave us a fabulous gift that lasts till this day and will last on and on.

Errol Flynn, was a very remarkable man, in spite of the fact that he had some major health issues that were aggravated by his life style. The sad part is that we lost him far too soon. No one has ever played or will ever play for example Robin Hood like Errol. Also what wonderful performances in many of his other rolls such as the Sea Hawk, Dawn Patrol, Charge of the Light Brigade, Objective Burma, Dodge City, San Antonio, and so many others. Errol Flynn was "ACES".

I think Mr. Flynn looks fine and is not under the drink. He was left handed and signed with his right hand and the chalk broke as he was signing. He was a good looking man and was a great actor. He was trying to disguise his voice and talked like a Scotsman. There was nothing wrong in his performance. They all had such good manners and it was all enjoyable. Glad this was preserved for history.
He was NOT left handed...you're mistaken. The chalk broke because of excessive pressure as he wrote and the odd angle that he was signing in!

Many people watching this clip, think Errol is drunk. He may very well be. But remember, movies stars and other celebrities were encouraged to disguise their voice so as not to be so easily guessed. If you notice he's changing his accent, Italian, Irish. His voice was quite well known at the time. If you notice once his identity is known, and the host remarks about his being married, his voice is normal.

I am not kidding when I say that having read David Niven's several memoirs, I do believe at this stage of his life Flynn was no longer drinking or carousing and was married to his final wife and reading the Bible. Niven was very positive about Flynn on all levels in his works that did include speaking of his show biz friends because he noted that it would be silly to speak of your plumber only in your life story, if you'd known Gandhi or Churchill or Sarah Bernhardt. So he did get mentions.

Love the Inverness mayor’s Loch Ness Monster story! He sounded pretty bloody believable to me. That patrician, east coast panel shouldn’t have been so dismissive. The mayor didn’t seem like he suffered fools. Their comments were disrespectful.

I've seen a couple of others use the high pitch mickey mouse voice to fool the panel - Muhammad Ali and Red Buttons. Hard to keep it going though I'd imagine.

Teresa L Serf's response was much like anyone's would be if someone told that story in dinner party company for instance.
Actually, I initially thought Serf meant sarcastically that he may have been watching too much television as the Mayor clearly didn't have a sense of it being only a half hour programme!! Then I realised very soon he was impishly implying that the man had had imagination fuelled somewhat.
Incidentally the Scots and the Irish, particularly the older generation, love spinning out a tall story. :)

I was diagnosed with alcoholic cirrhosis two years ago. I stopped drinking, and my liver is regenerating itself. My hepatologist says I can live for another 30 years. (I'm 60) Booze is a wicked mistress, but it can be overcome.

Errol Flynn may be one of the greatest movie stars whoever lived. This is not the dashing Flynn of Montana, Dodge City or the Adventures of Robin Hood.
Dorothy Kilgallen always has beautiful jewelry. Also, a good interrogator. Fun though!

He was what we now call a movie 'idol'. You see trendy men nowadays trying to emulate the look, the pencil line moustache and slicked back hair.

In Errol's defense, for some people it's hard to maneuver their hand to write on a chalkboard rather than a piece of paper flat on the table. I am a 25 year old left handed woman, and I can guarantee you my signature on that chalkboard would look worse than his, even sober.
If you look closely at Errol's hand holding the chalk, he has way more than half of it sticking out as he begins to write. Clearly a man not used to writing with chalk, as this technique would certainly cause the chalk to break.

Errol is Australian, so he had to disguise his voice, otherwise people would pick it straight away.Same when Sean Connery was on. Funny when the question about whether he was married, and the whole audience laughed. Still a good looking guy, considering the health problems he had.

Errol was actually a bit shy so he seemed a bit nervous to me on the show. His eyes are focused away from the camera to his right. He was suave and funny for the times.
John Huston in his excellent autobiography had some fascinating stories about Errol Flynn. Including an hour long fist fight the two had at a party, Flynn’s drinking, drug use and health and relationship with women.
Ron Pataki, former entertainment reporter for the Columbus Citizen Journal in Columbus Ohio is the last person to see Dorothy Kilgallen alive.
One of my favourite Flynn stories:
"One of Flynn's lesser-known interests was horse riding, which led to him engaging in a fight with director Michael Curtiz... and also ended up having a huge impact on Hollywood right up to the present day.
While filming The Charge of the Light Brigade in 1936, Curtiz shot the famous charge scene where he utilised tripwire to make horses fall over on cue. A sadly common but brutal filming technique that showed little regard for the health or well-being of the animals involved. The end result was 25 of these horses had to be put down.
His leading man, Errol Flynn, was incensed by both the scene and by Curtiz's apparent lack of care. Furious, he attacked his director and did his level best to inflict damage on him before the two were pulled apart.
This very scene was cited in the legal case that eventually banned the use of tripwire in filming a few years after this incident"

Yeah, that one was a wee bit rough. My grandmother was from Ireland, County Cork, but lived in Dublin before coming to USA. In all fairness, Arlene was off her game with the eye. I'm fairly certain she knows that Dublin is in Ireland. 😎💚
Mel Brooks says that Errol Flynn was the model for the Peter O'Toole character in "My Favorite Year," but that the actual plot is basically fiction. Brooks was not connected with the film but the film was based on various people involved with Sid Caesar, including a character that is a composite of Brooks with other writers, including Woody Allen.
That bastard on the end nails these celebs every time.
