  • A mysterious guest arrives and disrupts an already chaotic household, when Deborah Kerr, as a governess with a secret, is put in charge of delinquent teenager Hayley Mills, in Ronald Neame’s THE CHALK GARDEN (’64). Also starring John Mills as a wise, ever faithful butler and Oscar Nominee Dame Edith Evans as the domineering grandmother. Based on the hit Broadway play by Enid Bagnold, THE CHALK GARDEN is riveting drama from beginning to end.

    Loved the Chalk Garden with the late great, lovely lady, Deborah Kerr pronounced "Car", and Hayley Mills who is three years older than I am. Grew up watching all her Disney films in the 1960s when I was in my teens! Also love Sir John Mills! Watch him in Britain's "Great Expectations" with Sir Alec Guiness, a fabulous film in black and white! Two other greats from the Golden Age of Hollywood and the British film industry that has produced many fab films over the past several decades sInce the 1930s and 40s, wish they would show "The Chalk Garden " on Amazon prime and/or Netflix! They have many of Hayley's films available on the internet, but not that one! Thanks Steve. I'm a old movie junkie! Old movies, not old lady, still 'young at heart"! lol

    The Chalk Garden is my fave! Hayley & John Mills did a great job, but I think Hayley should've won a 2nd Academy Award for this movie. Even though she was only 17,she did a great performance(even the scenes when she starts screaming, which she also does in "Sky West & Crooked").

      It hink this is also one of Deborah Kerr's great later films. She did the , " The Night Of The Iguana" and " The Innocents" all around the same time. I felt so honored to have met Hayley and gotten her to sign my DVD of " The Chalk Garden". She's marvelous and it's my favorite of her films....I have to also asy the I absolutley ADORE Edith Evans!!!

    I am so glad to see you will be talking about this film. What players! John Mills is wonderful with his daughter as they were in "Tiger Bay". Here Hayley is older and a pivotal scene is when he confronts the impetuous child/young woman and says, you've got her on the defense and will you choose to run her down and destroy her, or be "mature". He was not only a good butler and friend, yet a good father in both instances. Judith Evans is a treasured actress when she finally asks for companionship and that is priceless, too. Deborah plays off them all as they take turns on her revealing her character's past; perhaps many options yet Kerr plays it out with great finesse that is not stilted and they allow each other their eccentricities to live together. Hayley plays well with her father again in other films to mention The Truth About Spring and The Family Way to give others a binge watch of the team. Loved her pairing with Trevor Howard in A Matter of Innocence as her uncle who shows her an option of paths and choice.

      @@STEVEHAYESTOQ I so enjoyed your review. I am sure you receive many suggestions and I tend to marvel at cunning psychological scenarios and two that come to mind when you mentioned Deborah Kerr made it look too-easy and was oft passed by. Jean Simmons was similar. Take "Home Before Dark" (a gaslight by any other name) and "Hilda Crane" (a woman in self-therapy) and what a force of unstated power she is. She was right up there and perhaps if the dice rolled her way could have had more and well she knew how to use her looks without them getting in the way of the dialog.

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ
      @STEVEHAYESTOQ  2 года назад

      @@beaulatimer3617 I atotally agree. I think Jean Simmons should have had the Oscar for Elemr Gantry over Burt Lancaster and especially over Liz Taylor in "Butterfield *" , which the loathed. Simmons gave such a lovely understated performance later in her career in "The Thornbirds" as Fee the stalwart mother of Meggy and all those boys. Loved her! Best; Steve

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ
      @STEVEHAYESTOQ  2 года назад

      @@beaulatimer3617 I'm not a big fan of "Home Before Dark", though I admire it's attempt at showing the psychological frustrations of the wife who fears her husband is a potentail philanderer. Rhonda Fleming's wiered 'Farmer's Daughter" hairdo drove me nut in this. I kept yelling at jean simmons; " get that blond out of your house!" It was reminicent of "Three Faces Of Eve". However, Simmons could do just about anything and make it real . I always liked her.

I was hoping you'd mention how well John and Hayley as real father n daughter play so well together. It was definitely the right move for Hayley to break out of the Pollyanna roles of the Disney machine. Have you seen her in either Pretty Polly or The Family Way ( again with her dad ) ??? She even did some thriller horror movies. Deborah Kerr is just the greatest and deserved more than one oscar.

      I've never seen "The Last Days of Dolywyn" , I'll have to make a concerted effort to find it. I love Edith Evans. She did " Chalk Garden" on the West End, but when they transferred it to Broadway, she didn't want toi go to New York, so Gladys got it. How I wish they would do a proper revival on Broadway, although I like the film version better. Angela lansbury was in talks to do it on The West End, but things fell through for one reason or another. Another great review and impression, Steve- as a side note, Dame Edith stating "Oh, these men!" in "Tom Jones" is one of my favorite onscreen retorts ever. Have you see Hayley's fantastic debut in "Tiger Bay" from 1959? Thanks for publicizing this movie, a favorite of mine. A couple more factoids: Dame Edith Evans was later nominated for Best Actress in "The Whisperers", a British film on old age and poverty that is rarely seen nowadays. And the playwright Enid Bagnold was the author of "National Velvet".

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ
      @STEVEHAYESTOQ  2 года назад

      @@STEVEHAYESTOQ yes I just remembered the other brilliant film I thought I had seen her in that I loved, Great Expectations from 1946. But I must be mistaken. Maybe it was Martita Hunt who played Miss Havisham in that film, because it also starred a much younger John Mills as Pip, and he’s the middle aged butler in Chalk Garden, so of course it isn’t possible. I do know it was one of the first films Jean Simmons starred in as the young Estella, which would confirm that these films are from different eras, because it was Valerie Hobson who played opposite John Mills as the adult Estella. Oh well I guess my brain isn’t as sharp as it once was. And I haven’t seen either of these films in decades.
      Sorry I meant to mention that I completely agree about Deborah Kerr. She was amazing in The Innocents, and one of the most flawlessly beautiful women I’ve ever seen. And on top of that, one of the most lovable IMHO. It is a huge shame she never won an Oscar, she was such a consistently good actress. And I suppose you’ve heard that Angela Lansbury just died. Another major star who unfortunately never collected an Oscar. Her acting range was incredible. Her death was just before her birthday, which is in a couple of days, the 14th I think.
      BTW I saw another fascinating film last night on Film 4 (a UK channel) from about the same year as Chalk Garden I think, 1963. A film noir, The Running Man. It starred Lee Remick, Alan Bates and Lawrence Harvey. Very enjoyable, I hadn’t heard of it before, which is a bit strange, as I really like all the actors in it. It’s mainly set (and filmed) in Spain and Gibraltar.

    I finally saw the whole movie on TCM a couple of days ago. The individual performances are all excellent, and these are some of my favorite actors too (no-one can say "immediately!" like Dame Edith Evans). In the 60 years since it came out, however, movies have changed so much, and now this seems a bit superficial and tame, even though it was clearly intended to be at least a little bit shocking. I wonder if the writer didn't streamline it a little too much? Anyway, a joy to watch, and so I watched your review again too. Thank you.
