Classic Movie Review: Barbara Stanwyck, Van Heflin, Lizabeth Scott and Kirk Douglas in his film debut star Lewis Milestone’s classic noir; “The Strange Love Of Martha Ivers” (’46). Filled with fabulous performances, an ending worthy of James M. Cain, and loaded with murder, mayhem and fabulous plot twists, it’s a trip down the dark side you won’t soon forget.

Barbra Stanwyck is my all time favorite female actress, I watched every movie she has made from "Night Nurse" to the "Big Valley" she was the ultimate vixen bad girl in this movie, but Kirk Douglas this being his first film role he was absolutely phenomenal!!! R.I.P😢 to all these beautiful actors: Barbara Stanwyck, Van Heflin, Lizabeth Scott and Kirk Douglas❤
And Judith Anderson as the meanest of the mean.
Barbara Stanwyck's wardrobe( by Edith Head) should have gotten co-star billing.
In every movie they did together. Stanwyck and Head were a wonderful team. Thanks for watching. Best; Steve
The girl who plays young Martha was Paul Henrid’s character’s daughter in Now Voyager!
Poor Janis Wilson!
Stanwyck is my all time favorite star! I LOVE this movie. Watching this recap sent me right to my old DVD! Thank you for a SPLENDID recap!
It's alotta fun and Stanwyck is terrific!
Great movie and of course Barbara Stanwyck is queen!
Careful there, Fella! Thanks for watching!
I've spend Memorial Day weekend discovering and being entertained by the tired old queen! I'd pay money to attend a movie night/dinner party with this guy!
You are the best! Thanks you so much!
Barbara Stanwyck was almost upstaged by Edith Head's wardrobe. My favorite Stanwyck movie.
One of mine as well!
Love Lizabeth Scott and all her noir's later in her career. She could carry a movie.
Have been a FAN of Barbara and Tired Old Queen for years !!! Am going to watch this movie again for the 3rd time !!!
Today? LOL! Thanks so much!
Just splendid. Steve, you are just a must-watch wonder, good sir. Love the commentary and your enthusiasm for the films is just infectious!
Thanks for your comments!
I love whenever you post a new video. It seriously makes my day every single time. I learn so much from these videos and it makes me want to delve deeper into all of the lore of these old movies. You really have a passion and a knack for conveying all of this information. Thank you for doing such great work!
Thanks so much, Meredith!
I'm rolling on the floor with the final Judith Fssh Henderson fshhh!
Gotta' luv Judy!
"She was upstairs and we came down. And we saw a man. A BIG man." Watching her say that through clenched teeth always made me chuckle, I just love this old classic, lol.
Me too! And I LOVE her!
I love Steve, he is so knowledgeable and funny as hell.
Thank you so much!
Stanwyck is beyond gorgeously malevolent in this. I never got the appeal of Van Heflin. I ageee that Kirk DOUGLAS is great. I did t realize it was his first film
Thanks for watching!
I like heflins empathy. He was thinking mans star
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Please notice 13:06 on your right shoulder orb quite full orb floats by mabey one of the actors your speaking about. ✨🥰
@@inismoonlight4731 Well, Iris. I hope you are right! How lovely! Thanks for watching and thanks for calling my attention to the mysterious orb. Take care and plases stay SAFE! Best; Steve
John Jones: I feel the same, including about Van Heflin.
I’m repeating what a few viewers have already mentioned before, that who needs antidepressants when we have your wonderfully entertaining movie reviews❣️🤩
Judith Anderson will always be the malevolent Mrs Danvers in “Rebecca” (1940).
Prior to Hollywood, she was also a great stage actress.
Still the queen of summaries! Thank you, gentlemen!
You're so welcome!
Welcome back. Don't stay away so long. You had me spell bound then dropped me when you said I'd have to see the movie for the rest. I just may. Ol Barbara Stanwyck still reminds me of "The Big Valley." Quite a dame she was.
She was. Nobody shot more leading men than Barbara. I could love her for that alone.
I love your knowledge of the characters, delivery of the lines and editing, I just watched this and I am so stoked to find your review. It had me laughing and nodding along. Just terrific review.
I can't believe how you make all these imitations and they are exactly right. This is so excellent I am laughing the whole time. Great Job Steve...
Oh , Darlin'! It warms my heart to hear from you and know that you are still watching TOQ ! Thank you for your love, friendship, knowledge and support! Sending you gobs of ,ove, Dear Heart! Steve
You are a fantastic reviewer you introduced me to the oldies I never thought to watch. Love you! Thank you 😊
My pleasure, Dear Roz!
I hated the aunt for killing the cat! Judith Andersen is so good at being very mean. And no one makes a nasty lady better than Barbara Stanwyck! She is right behind Bette Davis as my top favorite actress! This is a great review. I've seen Strange Loves many times and now can't wait to watch it again! I didn't know this was Kirk Douglas' first movie role. Also enjoyed all the info about Van Heflin. It is a deliciously convoluted story.
I know, it really grabs you and takes you along that convoluted highway to that spectacular scene at the end. Barbara ROCKS! But, my favorite performance is Kirk Douglas. He's simply mesmerizing as the alcoholic loser of a husband. Unforgettable.
Love it! Love you! Thank you ever so for the time and effort. For those of us not fortunate enough to have seen you on stage (yet!), these reviews give us some idea of what we are missing! Your performances here are often more interesting and entertaining than the film themselves! Wishing you all the best from Ridgeville...xo
Maybe I one day 'll do a show in Ridgeville...Maybe I won't go to Ridgeville..Maybe I'll just expose myself in Ridgeville...LOL!Thanks for watching and for the lovely compliments!
Excellent review! Thank you! .... And welcome back, wherever you've been! lol. xoxo
You are KILLING it😂🤣😂
“Come here (whistle) Martha”
Thanks for this wonderful
day of binge-watching you
guys- Excellent 💛🎥👍
Thanks you for taking the time and making the effort and for telling us! Hoorauy! Steve & Johnny & TOQ Gang
Steve ,I love every review you do, I immediately have to watch whatever movie you do,:)
Good! That's why I do 'em!
This has to be one of your best reviews I’ve watched. This was a perfect mix of your bigger than life acting skills, and, love and knowledge of classic films when films were made with Movie Stars.
I thank you! How could I resist? I love the way Stanwyck handles a .44. She holds it like it's a deer rifle and considering her size and the size of the gun, that's about right. And I'm still practicinbg Van Heflin's bit with the silver dollar...I now have loose change lying all over the floor. Just like the good old days...nevermind...Happy August! Steve
Great review of one of the best old classic films of the '40's. Thx 4 this one, Steve! 🙂🙂🎃🎃
It's got the greatest convoluted plot and the caharcters are so wonderfully complex. Fascinating from beginning to that fabulus end. Love this one as well. Thanks so much for watching!
one of my all time favorites! that little girl killed, Mrs. Danvers!
Somebody had to.
Such a great suspense thriller!! Stanwyck of course never disappoints. Van Heflin was so attractive and magnetic in this movie and of course the ever charming Lizbeth Scott who I was rooting for throughout!! Great review, Steve! I can’t remember if you have reviewed “Eastside Westside” another great one with Van Heflin And Barbara Stanwyck.
A wonderful entertaining review.
Dear Steve, you have made my day! You and Johnny break a leg in La Cage aux Folles 🌈💖🌈
I love your movie knowledge!!
I love that you love it! Thanks, Jerry!
I just love Van Heflin. I'll be glad to catch this movie again.
he was so versatile and so good with strong actresses.
Those classic movies have the best slaps
Ahhh an afternoon on the couch with a smart cocktail, some snacks and several of your movie reviews... bliss! Thanks!
OMG! Wish I could join you...my that sounded rather egotistical... I mean, we could giggle together and watch a movie or six. How's that?
Kirk was beautiful in this movie as well as Van. An all-time favorite movie. Barbara and Judith at their menacing best!! ❤❤❤
I always fantasize about running my fingers through Kirk's hair while he does things to me....nevermind. Happy New Year, Sweetie!
One of my favorite movies!! Thanks for another great review!
Hooray!
This is one of your best reviews!
Thanks so much!
So glad to see you back. Your love, enthusiasm and knowledge of classic films are a treat to watch.
Thank you so much!
Thank you for so many years of wonderful videos! As a fellow lover of old movies, I appreciate your incredible passion, enthusiasm, and knowledge of these great films. And you are such fun! Love your humor best of all.
Oh, that's so sweet and much appreciated!
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ thank you on behalf of your fans for taking the time this past week to answer all these comments. It really is a labor of love and much appreciated by all of us.
I never cared for Barbara until I came across this movie a few years ago. Now I see her art.
She was a pro. No nonsense, but that's what makes her terrific!
Steve is sooo good ! Listening to him talking about a film is probably more fun than watching the movie it self !
LOl! Thanks!
Watched this one for the first time last week. Van Heflin really got under my skin in Possessed with Joan Crawford, so I was glad to have a soft spot for him in Martha Ivers. Him and Stanwyck were great together. And lord have mercy, Stanwyck. 1940's Stanwyck is my favorite Stanwyck.
I had read about Scott's Confidential scandal awhile back, so it was good to see her in action. Overall, it was a great movie about a deadly secret. Great review!
Thanks, so glad you're back on board with Van. He was always solid. I love this one to . the plot weaves in and out and it's such fun! Best; Steve
Just discovered your page.... loving these reviews , you are very entertaining... rewatching this again. Your impersonations are so spot on and fabulously done… I love watching you ..,
I thank you!
Another of my faves! Thanks for all these vids!!
Love your Judith Anderssssson impression! Heflin's a favorite and Stanwyck tops 'em all.
Thanks for watching! This has always been one of my favorite noirs. The plot is so covoluted and each of the actor's get's a a great moment. Stanwyck and Heflin were very good together. He was such an underrated actor. But, aside from Stanwyck, Kirk Douglas knock me out in this. he's so weak and malevolent at the same time. One of my favorite of his performances. Thanks for watching and stay SAFE! Best Wishjes and Happy New Year, Daniel.. Steve
I’ve been so looking forward to this next review and now I am settling in after a long day to enjoy every second, thanks Steve and the team :)
Thank you, Collie!
You are a marvel, Steve. Thank you!

Bravo! Brilliant review of an unforgettable film! 👏 Thank you so much!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching! Steve
Can’t believe I have never seen this one! Sounds great!
Oh my gosh, it's SO good! All the actors are at the top of their game.
love this movie really top notch film noir you couldn t get a better cast barbara is pure evil in mink love it
She really sinks her teeth into these roles.
THANK YOU STEVE. FINALLY. A film noir of epic proportions!
You got that right! Thanks for watching!
Lisbeth Scott has a deep husky voice, kinda mannish. Love this film.
I’ve seen this movie before. After your review I can’t wait to see it again. I love your insights and sense of humor.
Oh Jean; I could go on and on about the fabulous Miss Stanwyck. Never see her in anything I don't sit down and marvel at. This one in particular is a "rip snorter" , as my Grandmother used to say. Enjoy and thanks so much for watching! Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ, Have you reviewed “Our Betters” made in 1933 with Constance Bennett. It’s another favorite of mine.
@@jeanw2018 No, but thanks for the recomendation! I'll look into it! Best; Steve
Speaking of Van Heflin, why don't you do "AIRPORT"? Also, for Lizabeth Scott, "Too Late For Tears". And tell Johnny to do his next intro wearing as little as possible......
Johnny. So freakin hot
@Ed Miller lol
@Ed Miller 😆 are you drunk?
STEVE. You make day
This may be my favorite TOQ review ever!
Thanks, Davis!
Steve you'd be so perfect in the musical The Drowsy Chaperone! It's a wonderful musical about a guy that's passionate about classic musicals the way you are about classic movies. Also, I haven't been well recently and your videos are such a comfort ❤❤
How did you know?1 The Man In the Chair in "The Drwosey Chaparone" has been one of my dream parts, but so far to no avail. But, you never know! I ALSO LOVE the Butler. SUCH A LOVELY HOMAGE TO MUSICALS. I hope this finds you feeling better , My Friend. Sending you a big hug and many thanks for your kindness and for watching. Take care and stay SAFE. All My Best; Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ thank you so much for replying! Stay safe also ❤❤ Also, if you ever decided to review a strictly stage musical, I would love to see your take on Drowsy!
I love the way you put a spin on it
Hooray! So gald you watch and so glad you liked it! Steve
That goddamn cat reminds me of my sisters cat "Queenie!" who hated everyone in the world but, my sister!
Steve, You are a treasure!!!!!!
Great Douglas debut. Also really good in "Out of the Past". Long before "Spartacus"!
This is the first time I have seen Lizabeth Scott. I think I am in love.
Check her out in Tchnicolor in "Desert Fury" w/ Mary Astor and in two other great noirs; "Dead Reckoning" and "Too Late For Tears"Thanks for watching! Best; Seve
So given the anniversary and the revival of the play, do you have any plans of doing a video on “The Boys in the Band”?
Hi Steve just listened to this and loved every minute of it!!!
Hooray!
Just discovered this channel recently and am catching up on old videos. If you're still reviewing movies, I'd love to hear your take on the 1960 film Strangers When We Meet with Kirk Douglas and Kim Novak.
I happen to like that movie alot, however, I'm always disappointed that there wasn't more physical passionate. I got the feeling that they didn't really have that much chemestry. Both are so sexy in this, I was surprised that kind of sexuality wasn't exploered more. I think it suffered from the period it was made.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Thanks for responding! You make a good point; the movie did seem to be holding back, and I agree that it was probably due to the mores of the time. But good golly, Kim Novak was Sex on a Stick back in the day, wasn't she? And Kirk was in his prime when the movie was made, though what he allegedly did to Natalie Wood has colored my opinion of him.
@@SarahRenz59 Well, the word here is "allegedly" and I wasn't a fan of what Joan Crawford allegedly did to her children, but I love her movies. So...Thanks for watching! Steve
You are adorable. You are a RIOT!! The imitations!!!! I love you!!!
Marry Me!...sorry... got carried away by your compliments. Thank you so much for watching!
Do you live in NY or LA. Would love to have lunch one day. Love your reviews.
I live in New York.
I don't know if I ever enjoyed the movie as much as your synopsis. I have seen this several times since I don't have cable and it is shown often. Thanks for this!
I find it convoluted and irresisrtable...like a few people I dated. They also shot their leading men, so it never lasted long.
Fascinating review, Steve! I haven't seen the movie but I know I would enjoy it and I have a hunch your review is even more enjoyable!---We don't see much of the staircase and hallway in the mansion but I think that same set was used later in "Written on the Wind" and "Marnie" and quite a bit later in "The Money Pit".
Yeah, the re-used alot of 'em.
I just watched this film tonight and I enjoyed it Barbara Stanwyck is great in this, What a phenomenal actress she was this is my 7th film of her’s I’ve seen (pretty sure) Although the film quality was not as crisp as I would have liked it to be despite the fact that it’s easily accessible on RUclips although I just ended up watching it on Tubi. Is the DVD the best quality version of the movie do you think?
Yes, they re-issued it a few years back on Paramount DVD and it's beautiful. It was in the public domain for so many years and just kept getting copied over and over, so it lost it's clarity. I love this one. Kirk Douglas is marvelous as well.
Judith Anderson was in Cinderfella
Another film i can watch over and over
Oh, so can I! Love this one!
the longer videos the better.. why do you whistle on judith anderson?
Great one!
Thank you!
This was the first thing I ever taped, in about 1987; what a thrill that was!
The perfect thing to record first! Such a convoluted, wonderful, noir! Happy Holidays! Steve
@@stevenhayes4063 Thanks! Happy Hols to you too!
This is one of your best! BTW you look terrific. Have you been eating your Wheaties?
LOl! Thanks! It's all in the make-up and I credit Home Depot with that!
Have not see this yet- all descriptions for it were murky- ALOT goes on. Your great review has me primed now. (Why didn't I just didn't go to you first Steve!?) XXX OOO
Like mosrt noirs, the plot is convoluted, but it's fascinating and you'll be gald to checked it out.
Dear Steve I'm commenting on this film simply so that I can say I'm sure you and Johnny were wonderful in "La Cage aux Folles" and I wish I could see a film of that performance. However I found this film - just how black can noir get? - to be a very hard and unsettling one to watch, although indeed worth viewing. I saw it on television a long time ago but have never forgotten it, and thought that if you treat a young girl monstrously she will turn out a monster, which is precisely what happens here. On television you didn't actually see Judith Anderson beating the cat - the visual was cut and you just heard the noises, so she could have been strangling the animal for all the viewer knew, which was even worse. You're absolutely right about Kirk Douglas' readiness to play unsympathetic characters - my God, the character he played in "Ace in the Hole". And as to Lisabeth Scott, in this film she seems to be a girl in continual need of a prescription! Van Heflin was indeed always worth watching, as was Barbara Stanwyck (times ten). My only query is how a girl like Janis Wilson grew up to look like Barbara Stanwyck. It's so unfair. I was such a pretty little blonde girl that when my mother took me anywhere the child molesters formed queues, but I grew too tall, my hair went dishwater colour, and I had to wear glasses. Thank God for developing a figure (after school there was bleach, plus contact lenses) but even so walking home through Soho with a brooch across my school tie that read "Vice Head Girl" was an education in itself. Best wishes, Alida
You are hilarious! The line about the child molesters made me fall off my chair! I'd be willing to wager you were quite the loker in and out of school. As a teenager, I had such tight curly black hair, I wore an afro that made me look like I'd stuck my tongue in a light socket. As far as Janis Wilson is concerned, she did pretty well for a girl who's looks could stop watches. I always have to laugh as Bette Davis tries to run her hands through Janis's dirty hair while they lie in bed together. It reminds me of the wedding night with Henry the 8th and Anne Of Cleves; " The things I do for Warners!" HA! Steve
I just LOVE this man!
Thank you!
Lizabeth Scott is so great. I loved her in Pitfall with Dick Powell, Jane Wyatt and Raymond Burr. And, what can you say about Barbara Stanwyck. Few rivaled her acting range and career length!
This is such a fabulous noir and both actresses are incredible ...as are Van Heflin and especially Kirk Douglas who brings such a range of pathos and menace to the husband. His final scene at the window with Stanwyck is unforgettable.
Steve please do THE BAD SEED! Rhoda!
It's on my list!
I love you both! I've grown up with you over the years. You are my "Mister Rogers" and "Sesame Street"!
OMG! That's flattering...if a little scary to some people! LOL ! Thanks for watching all these years.
Sir you're so humorous 🎉😅😅😅❤❤❤
Thank you, sssy! So appreciated.
Great job.
THANK YOU, Sir! Happy New Year and please keep watching TOQ at the Movies! Stay Safe! Best; Steve
Van Heflin later played the lead on the Hallmark Hall of Fame's production of "Neither Are We Enemies." I remember it as a generation gap story . Heflin plays Joseph of Arimethes an honest judge interpreting Jewish law during the timenof Jesus. His teenage son is a zealot throwing mud at the images of Roman authority. A recording must be around somewhere.
Could be. I alwasy loved Hefloin. Always reliable and always solid.
great film and yes Kirk Douglas was wonderful
So self assured and vulnerable for his first silm. I think he's by far the most interesting character. Thanls for watching! Please stay SAFE! ! Best : Steve
Your Barbara Stanwyck expression breaks me up every time! That woman is always baring her teeth…
She had a tendency to not close her lips very much!...I should have that problem! LOL! Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
I first discovered this great movie on Nickelodeon, about 1985, when they were filling some prime time hours with classic old films. The good old days, before cable channels became massive garbage dumps.
I ound this film n late night as a teenager and it stayed with me forevere. so dark and brooding and that double suicide/murder scene at the end is such a classic noir climax, All three leads ( Stanwyck, Heflin and Douglas) were at the top of their game.
Small nitpick about that cane beating scene: It's not convincing at all; Janis whips the cane back really lightly. I'm not sure why Milestone didn't think about doing a retake of the scene or setting it up so the hit the [camera] in first person much more forcefully.
Otherwise, hoo-boy. The movie is a deliciously dark melodrama. Messed up couple that are perfect for each other.
This is my #2 choice for my favorite Classic film. Mr. Hayes, please explain the whistle when you mention Judith Anderson. I don't get the joke. LOL Lizabeth Scott is so lucious. I love your comment about Stanwyck being SEXED UP over seeing Heflin
Judith always had a slight whistle with her "S"'s. I exagerated it, that's all. I love her and I love this film. Thanks for watching! Steve
Love this channel
I'm so glad!
Judith Anderson, didn't she play Mamnet in The Ten Commandments? You're right, #SteveHayes , this story IS convoluted.
Another dame, Edith Evans.
Yes, she did! Then Anne Baxter tossed oer over the balconey!
@@steveweinstein3222 Nope, Juduth Anderson .
I am obsessed with Barbara Stanwyck. Do you think I need help?
Thanks, Steve and Johnny from a former Syracuse girl.
With Dewitt your last name, I'm not surprised! LOL! I grew up in New Woodstock, just outside of Cazenovia and Johnny and I have worked together and separately at The Redhouse Arts Center over the years. I lve it! Hope you are somewhere out of the snow, although I miss Cental New York this time of year. It can be so beautiful! Thanks for watching and have a lovely SAFE week! Best; Steve & Johnny
