  • Joan Crawford tackles what she once described as the most difficult role of her career as a woman on the brink of madness in Curtis Bernhardt’s noir classic POSSESSED (1947). Helping her to earn her second Oscar nomination are Van Heflin, Raymond Massey and Geraldine Brooks. It’s producer Jerry Wald (MILDRED PIERCE and HUMORESQUE) and Warner Brothers at their melodramatic best.

You should review "The snake pit", released one year later, and again with a mentally ill woman in the leading role. @@slc2466 Sorry but I must disagree... Loretta Young was not as accomplished dramatic actress as her four rivals (Joan Crawford in this movie, Susan Hayward, Dorothy Mc Guire and specially Rosalind Russell) but gave in "The farmer's daughter" (also in "The bishop's wife", released the same year) such a charming, performance... Very professional too as playing a comedy is never easy. It had to be a hard choice but not an unfair triumph for the lovely Miss Young.

@Maurice Savard One rainy evening I decided to curl up with an "Old Hollywood Classic" selecting Joan Crawford in "Mildred Pierce". Since that evening the dishes have piled, laundry heaped, and text and calls go unanswered. Mail is falling from an overstuffed mailbox and food is delivered as I am mesmerized by movie bliss found in the shadows of film noir black and white! I have had to make a contract with myself to shower daily tearing myself away from what Ms Crawford might do next! (Thank Goodness I am retired). As I tell myself " Just one more", I have a dread of first responders pounding on my door carrying out a

Yes, you know when she says ""I love you" is such an inadequate way of saying I love you" she's in trouble, especially with the cold-hearted bastard Heflin plays- love stinks with him, for sure. Joan does a great job letting go of her signature toughness to show the fragile, unbalanced nature of her character.

@@slc2466 Absolutely! I have known a couple of women that truly were broken over their breakups. Not exactly to the point of Joan's character, but the "breakup" affected them for years afterward. In both cases, the guy was very close to Van's character, cold and detached. This just got me to thinking about "Fatal Attraction". I just watched a Vanity Fair interview with Glenn Close last night on RUclips. If FA was made today, she would want to see the back story of Alex's character and what made her do what she did. There's a comparison, Joan vs. Glenn's characters. Mmm? Have a great day, sic2466!

@@vintagegal541 I think it's also a telling tale of obsession and where it can lead. Movies like this, one, "Vertigo", "Madame Bovary", "The Paradine Case" and of course later, "Fatal Atrraction", "Play Misty For Me" , "Damage" with Jeremy Irons and Brian DePalma's "Obsession", among others, all deal with the fact that obsession takes no prisoners, can completely take over a life and often lead to a tragic end for all concerned. I've gone through a few in my lifetime , for one reason or another, and find films on the subject so fascinating. Probably why "Vertigo" is my favorite movie. Thanks for watching and for your insight! Best Wishes; Steve

@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Hi Steve, I've seen all of those, "Fatal Attraction" and "Vertigo" many times. The end scene in "Damage" where Jeremy had a photo of Juliette cover the entire wall was very haunting to me. Glenn Close said of her character, Alex, she wasn't a villain, but that's how audiences saw her. Her mental health was very delicate. These films are so interesting. Thanks for being candid about your situations. I've been thru a couple of very hard breakups that were painful myself. I choose single and happy! My best to you too, Steve!

This film is a gripping psychological melodrama, and Joan is outstanding. It's the sort of movie where you truly do not know what to expect next when it really begins building its feeling of tension. I do enjoy a character study where the protagonist is revealed to be dangerously unhinged; call me crazy ((insert icy Joan expression here, LOL)). Automatic smile when your notification came up😁👏🏻 Your Joan & Bette are a treat! “Possessed” is almost like “Mildred Pierce” on steroids, with Miss Crawford in tiptop schizophrenic shape. Great synopsis of this Joan classic! Honestly though, I always thought that if this movie were in real life Joan would’ve eaten Van Heflin for breakfast, lunch AND dinner (he always struck me as kind of dweeby, imo). Looking forward to your next gem❤️

I've waited a long time for you to review this Joan Crawford masterpiece; it's certainly among her best work. I've always enjoyed your film reviews, Steve; they're a treat. The 1947 version of "Possessed" was indeed a classic. The way Joan slowly went insane showed how well she researched the role. And as for the scene when she thinks she's bumped off her stepdaughter, well...

I might go with "Humoresque" for my favorite Crawford performance, as she's so beautiful, stylish and dramatically compelling in it and even puts over some world-weary, sly humor, but in terms of stepping outside her image she probably pushed herself hardest in "Possessed," going as deep emotionally as I think she ever did on-screen to really get into a character. If she hadn't already won for "Mildred Pierce," the Academy might have given her the prize for this one.

Every Saturday we would drive to work with him and spend the entire day watching B flick double features.. They ran consecutively all day. Westerns, gangster films, women's prison movies.
    Eight, nine, ten years old.
They poisoned my mind and twisted my idea of what life was like and how normal people behaved.

The beginning with Crawford wandering the streets without makeup and glamor is a statement in itself - that she felt comfortable enough in herself and in this part that she could look 'non-Joan Crawford.' Pre-eyebrows (around the 1960s and on) Joan Crawford was an amazing actress who owned her roles. By the time she (and so many other actors of her time) ended up in assorted B-grade horror movies, she'd become a parody of herself.

I'm an old movie buff, and a big Joan Crawford fan, and I'm ashamed to say I've never seen Possessed. I like Mildred Pierce, who doesn't, and I love Humoresque, but something about the look of Possessed turned me off. But after your review I'm definitely going to watch it.

The irony is Crawford was, in some ways, a bigger star after her comeback at Warner's even though she played a lot of women who weren't winners, while at MGM, she played winners. I have never seen this one, so thanks for the recommendation.

It was a challenge and she meets it head on. She really dug deep to play this woman . I prefer all her movies from "Mildred Pierce" through "Baby Jane" . Like her, these characters were tough and tenacious. She knew what it what like and what it cost to fight for what you wanted in a business ruled by "MANsters". Thanks for watching! Steve
