Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard lead a fabulous cast through in Elliott Nugent’s “The Cat and the Canary” (’39). Based on a famous stage play and silent classic, the action centers around a group of relatives at the reading of a will, located in an old dark house in the bayous of Louisiana. Everyone is suspicious of everyone and to make matters worse, a homicidal maniac has escaped from the local looney bin and plans to murder them all. Loaded with a combination of thrills and laughs, the cast includes; veteran horror actors George Zucco, as a suspicious lawyer and Oscar winner Gale Sondergaard in another of her evil housekeeper role. Halloween fun at it’s Hollywood best!

One of the things I really like is how besides the big name films, you also come up with ones like this that don't get so much attention. I must admit it's totally new to me. I hope someone's streaming it so I can add it to my Halloween weekend movies. My main feature will be Deborah Kerr in "The Innocents". Great revue as usual.

Tied Up Cream Of Denuded!
Saw TC&TC years ago, always a fan of both Hope and Goddard. Thought they had good chemistry, and the 'old dark house' trope did well as a comedy (better here than 1941's "The Black Cat", anyway).
But I'm sure you've seen Paulette's screen test for Scarlett; Vivien Leigh was perfection in the role and Selznick was lucky to have her. I don't think Paulette could have carried it off.
For Halloween I put in my DVD of one of my favorite supernatural movies, "The Ghost And Mrs. Muir". A big bowl of popcorn, rum and Coca-Colas, and a box of Kleenex. Just right for a cold, stormy autumn night.

Thanks for the introduction to a new (to me!) movie, Steve! Just the look of "The Cat and the Canary" is great: the lighting, the details of the set, just the overall quality of the photography and lighting and sets. Then with that combination of performers and script: we have a winner!

An absolute hoot, this film. I first watched it with one of my kids and was trying to keep him from being frightened, and he kept laughing because he thought it was so funny! It got so that every time something scary happened, we burst out laughing. But as you said so correctly, Mr. Hayes, it was scary too The cool thing about the film is that it was at times hard to know when to laugh and when to scream--a complete success of a film. Despite considering myself a fan of Bob Hope movies, i'd actually never even heard of this one. Of course I'm sadly ignorant of many great old movies I've been missing all my life! This one looks better than several other comic- horror hybrids, old and more recent!

This movie was funny but I liked Ghost Breakers better. The two movies however were so similar it’s crazy. One Gale Sondergaard peeps through the window, it was the zombie in the other movie. Bob Hope makes a snide comment about Democrats in that movie, which is my favorite line of the movie. They also have to read a letter and decipher that one. What was better about ghost breakers was that it had ghosts in it. Thanks for a great review Steve

Great review. Boy, those movies were such fun. My grandma's favourite comedian was Bob Hope, and those ghostly ingredients were used in a fun way.

Dear Tom; How nice to hear from you. Decades ago, when I first moved into my building which was built in 1900, I had a ghost in my apartment. Several people saw him. One night, after I turned out the light, I heard a crash and my water glass was smashed against the wall , across the room. I had been told that if you confront the ghost ,they leave you alone, so I sat up and told him I was aware he was there, didn't mind him hanging around, but that I lived there now too and he'd have to adjust to that and behave." Another movie I'm not familiar with. I'll look this one up. The set, lighting, the cast, all looks great! Reminds me a bit of The Old Dark House. Thanks Steve and Johnny, I'll second what someone else mentioned, you both bring joy and a little respite in these troubling times , SO much appreciated! Also, Paulette Goddard: I can see why she came very close to nabbing the Scarlet O'Hara role! Fascinating to ponder what the movie would have been like with her in it.....but it's a very moot question at this point.
Between you and I, what you saw in Paulette's tests of her is, I feel, all she would have brought to the role. One the other hand, I think Vivien brought endless variation to what was basically a two dimensional role. She carries the film and it's one of the greatest happy accidents to come out of Hollywood History.

Funny, Gale Sondergaard was sort of psychic- always the housekeeper. Sondergaard played Emily, the housekeeper / medium in, "The Time of Their Lives", the last Abbot and Costello movie. I'll never forget Millie Dean saying to Emily "Oh, pardon me, but didn't I see you in Rebecca?" Dean was fabulously played by Binnie Barnes.

Yes, I love Gale Sondergaard. As you say, Gale Sondergaard played many spooky housekeepers in 1940's films. Actually Miss Sondergaard could play anything and I make a point of seeing anything she has done. It makes me angry that her film career abruptly ended when her writer director husband was accused of being a commie and suddenly Miss Sondergaard's services were no longer solicited for films.
Yes, I watch in in everything! She was so much more versatile than the typecasting of Hollywood trapped her in. Witness her subtle and sensitive work in "The Letter", despite her role being portrayed as sinister and without speaking a word of English. or her poignant Oscar nominated performance as the neglected frst wife in "Anna and the King Of Siam" just a year before she was blacklisted. Sondergaard has always been a personal favorite of mine. As for the blacklist, she was one of so many who were robbed of their careers and we in turn were robbed of their briliiance as a result., Anne rever, Marsha Hunt, Lee Grant, Larry Parks, Betty Garrett, Howard DeSilva, so many.
