MOVIE MUSICAL REVIEW: Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe have a comic field day together aided by a supporting cast which includes; Tommy Noonan, Charles Coburn and precocious little George "Foghorn" Winslow, who may be the youngest millionaire on the boat, but has an eye for a good looking girls. Adapted from the hit Broadway show with musical numbers staged by legendary choreographer and Marilyn confidante Jack Cole, it's a lush Technicolor eyeful that will have you laughing hysterically and humming for days. True story here - This is one of my favorite movies of all time and when offered as a free option for an overseas flight I punched it up for a comfort re-watch. At the scene, "Is There Anyone Here For Love," a German guy sitting next to me glanced at the screen and screamed in terror, "Shes watching gay porn!" Laughingly, I had to explain this movie. He'd never heard of it, but did know who Marilyn Monroe was. I'm not sure he believed me when I told him this was a beloved classic. Good Times.

Great review of one of my all-time favorites. Marilyn was at her stunning peak, and the chemistry with Jane Russell is great. My favorite scene in the movie is in the dining when she first learned about tiaras. She said, "I just love finding new places to wear diamonds!".

Yes! My all time favorite MM movie! This is Marilyn in her very best, most magical, charismatic, vivacious performance of her career. It really showcased MM's great comic chops, as she plays the quintessential "dumb blonde", who's secretly smarter than most of the men around her. The costume design was gorgeous, the music was catchy and fun--I just can't get over how good this movie is, and it certainly stands the test of time! It's still so quotable. I FORCED my boyfriend to watch it so he'd understand why I always say, in my best Marilyn-esque baby voice, "I won't be in love with a man who won't trust me, no matter what I might do!"
Thank you for doing Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (though the title had nothing to do with the plot of the movie). It's such a classic.
    Other great dialogue:
Boyfriend's Father: Have you really got the nerve to tell me you don't want to marry my son for his money?
Marilyn: No, I want to marry him for YOUR money.

Steve, I love this one too. The first number is one of my favorites. Even though it's interrupted by the credits thank God they return to the number and finish it. I think Jane and Marilyn are a wonderful pair and seem to make each other better by the contrast of their different personalities. They never looked better in extremely vivid technicolor (just as color enhances Marilyn in Niagara). I love the scene with Marilyn, little George "Foghorn" and Charles Coburn when she gets stuck in a porthole and little guy helps her with the aid of a deck chair blanket to fool Coburn into thinking she's just out for a little air instead of being stuck after searching for incriminating photos.
As always your impressions are spot on. Bravo.

Should be mentioned that Marilyn does her own singing in all her films.
Somebody posted that Marni Nixon was hired to clean up some of MM's high notes. Whatever. Marilyn's voice was part of the whole astounding MM package. She may have been emotionally destroyed by afternoons on the casting couch w/shriveled up old Joe Schenck to "earn" this role, but her performance is incandescent and eternal.
Like Bette Davis in "All About Eve", Marilyn was born to play Lorelei Lee. Nobody, but nobody else could have looked as she did in "Diamonds".
Major, major props to choreographer Jack Cole. Brilliant work.
When I was a child I used to come home from school and watch movies on TV. I remember "Seven Year Itch", "How To Marry A Millionaire" & "Blondes". I fell in love with Marilyn Monroe because I thought she was hysterically funny. I can watch her talk to Piggy in this movie and still crack up at how she delivers lines like, "I just love finding new places to wear diamonds." No matter what anybody says, she was a great comedienne.

As an NYC tour guide I would explain to tourists the The Urban Assembly Institute of Math and Science for Young Women in Brooklyn by quoting some lines from the movie:
Esmond Sr., "Have you got the nerve to tell me you don't want to marry my son for his money?"
    Lorelei Lee, "It's true."
Esmond Sr., "Then what do you want to marry him for?"
Lorelei Lee, "I want to marry him for YOUR money."
Lorelei: Don't you know that a man being rich is like a girl being pretty? You wouldn't marry a girl just because she's pretty, but my goodness, doesn't it help?
Esmond Sr.: Say, they told me you were stupid! You certainly don't seem stupid to me!
Lorelei: I can be smart when it's important, but most men don't like it.
A school of math and science just for young women so they can be smart and not worry about hurting the feelings of young men.

Some of the sets for this film were also used in "Titanic" and "Dangerous Crossing". A famous MM portrait shows here with hands on hips, wearing a gold lame gown. It was worn in this film but the scene was deleted because, as I recall, the gown was too revealing. The ocean liner shown in GPB was the Titanic but with only 3 instead of 4 smokestacks. I also saw the ship in the 1975 (?) TV movie "Last Survivors" starring Martin Sheen.

George 'Foghorn' Winslow was interviewed later in life about working several days as the pint sized love interest of Marilyn. He said, I worked all day with this amazingly beautiful woman and at the end of the day she came out of her trailer and I didn't recognize her till she spoke.

"You'll hurt yourself" is a comic take on Jane's line to Jack Buetel in The Outlaw a decade prior (when he's about to shock the censors by making advances to her while in bed after a gunshot wound).

3:37 Jane's line "Honey, you'll hurt yourself!" parodies one in The Outlaw' (released less than 10yr earlier) leading to likely but unfilmed lovemaking! Still in public memory then, I imagine.

Did Marilyn do her own singing?

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ

12 years now. WHEW! Time flies. Yes, she did her own singing. She was also great friends with choreographer dancer Jack Cole, who knew exactly what her limitations were and handeled her accordingly. He always took good care of her and whenever the dancing got too tricky for her or whatever skin tight outfit, she was wearing, he would just have the guys pick her up and take her to the next location on the set. Then she'd sing a little, and they'd lift her up and whisk her off to another. When I watched her as a kid, it always seemid like she could fliy. I love her! Thanks for the lovely compliments and for watching. Steve

Thanks sir! This time I will try to not mention the beautiful AD Gene doll. This movie is one of my favorite since I was a child. I remember seeing on French television on a Sunday afternoon back in… probably the mid 70s. It was all dubbed in French!!! Even the songs! That’s the day I swore I would always watch films in their original languages! Imagine: Diamonds are a girls best friend in French.. with the chorus voices in English (diamants… diamonds!!) the next day I bought the vinyl to be able to hear the real songs.
Thanks again for the great review and… love the Gene!!! I can’t help myself!
