Does anyone who does not play guitar realize the MASTERY we just witnessed ?!?!?! Glenn Campbell just SMOKED on a 12 string guitar BETTER than most advanced players can play a 6 string !?!?! The difference between QUICKLY AND CLEANLY playing a 12 string over a 6 string is ENORMOUS...and takes an AMAZING level of practice and talent. I just never appreciated this guy's talent when I was a kid - and even as a young adult playing guitar for years I ignored all the accolades I heard about this guy. My Dad listened to a few of his songs on the radio when I was a little kid but I was just too young to appreciate / understand the enormity of the talent and so nothing caught my ear. I started playing 6 string electric guitar at around 20 years old and only listened to 80's hair metal and the like - which is FUN to play - and with enough distortion - I can sound pretty good at - so my musical tastes were just stunted for years !! I picked up a 12 string guitar ONCE at the music store - and I STUNK at it - I was pretty dang good at 6 string but the 12 string just SLAPPED ME DOWN - HARD - and I was actually a teensy embarrassed and NEVER picked one up again ( but I did learn some respect for the instruments demands ) !! It wasn't until recently after RUclips algorithms suggested I listen to Glenn's songs I finally did after years ( MANY years ) of ignorance. I've been like WOW ever since !! Glen Campbell on a 12 string is simply other-worldly - and the other guys my Dad suggested like Roy Clark and Jerry Reed are fantastic as well...took years , but I finally learned my Dad and a whole lot of other experts were right on !! Yes , it is sad he is gone , but his incredible musical talent will definitely live on and I am truly thankful I didn't completely miss out !!
On RUclips I saw the guitar analyst analyze this, and it was as you say. Yes, Campbell is amazing and one among the greats. Also Roy Clark and Jerry Reed....some of the very best! Like how he says 'Rawseeni' and 'note for note, my friends, God willing'! I don't play guitar, but love Rossini and the William Tell Overture, and of course, this is only the part of the overture that is called the galup (appropriate for its association with Silver, but is actually a music term for the fast pace) .
I play guitar so I agree. I saw him do this live, summer of 77 in NY's Belmont Park, outdoor performance, Amazing. I went with my father. He knew some of his musicians so we were permitted to go backstage. I was only 19. He performed Wichita Lineman. What a voice!
How can anyone not like this performance? How many people can play guitar like Glen Campbell and on top of his head as well! My favorite singer and guitarist. He is number 1 in my book!
My Dad died of Alzheimers in 2012, this was one of his favourite pieces played by Glen, I remember him showing me this on video when I was a boy and I have just rediscovered it on RUclips. Absolutely fabulous, truly a great talent. Best wishes to the Campbell family at this difficult and sad time.
I had the pleasure of stumming his Ovation guitar when he played at Ontario Place (Toronto) back in the late 70's, when I was working as an unpaid roadie for a sound equipment company. Felt like such a hack, and I guess I am all these years later, compared to his genius. He came on stage with a bandage wrapped around his wrist, having suffered some injury or other. Geez, he could have played blindfolded and gagged in the trunk of a car, he was that good. Blew me away.
I was at the CNE in 1969 when Glen had opened and closed for Johnny Cash but I didn't see the show until the closing when Glen did Yakety Axe and Galveston . btw In January 1965 CBS had bought out Leo Fender for about $12 million and then had a Policy to have each musician or singer on their TV shows use Fender products. All of the Beatles songs on Ed Sullivan were recorded in 1964 at the Studio and were promoted as live right up to August 65 which was why they didn't had Fender products. Since CBS ran the Smothers Brothers show and they had Mason Williams as a Staff comedy Writer for the Jim Stafford show and Glen Campbell show..... Mason Williams tune Classical Gas debuted on the Smothers Brothers show to promote it . This was also when CBS promoted the Ovation Brand which was owned by CBS via Fender Instruments, ergo when Glen filled in the Smother Brothers summer run he was given his own show in 1969 and used that Ovation 6 string and other CBS promted fender items . When Hee Haw hit the screen in 1969, it too was a CBS backed show from Nashville that promoted Fender products but respected how Roy Clark had his own collection of Gibson's and his 1950's Byrdland guitar. As for the Beatles , the later songs on Sullivan were recorded in a studio live in England to keep the costs down because the 1964 trip was about $10,000.00 . Since CBS drove Fender into the ground by the bean counter wanting lower quality costs for the same profits....CBS sold it off but there still musicians signed on to Fender to continue to promote them . I try to look for the Fender items in the Post 1964 Sullivan shows and often wonder if some people refused to do the show and give up their equipment for Fender products.
It's August 2024. I'm a guitar player who did his time in the local circuit. I couldn't string Glens guitar. This man did everything. From Wrecking Crew, to bass player for the Beach Boys (ironic), had at least 5 vocal hits and was an actor, he's just amazing. At 70, despite my passion for rock, of my top 10, only 3 players made it. In no special order, (though my first 2 are my personal favorites.) Glen Campbell, Roy Clark, Jerry Reed, Chet Atkins, Jim Stafford, Jose Feliciano, Mark Knopfler, Eddie Van Halen and Jan Akerman (Focus).
How about we see you play... anything. I think Glen Campbell was a great guitar player but this vanity piece is far from my favorite was not Beyond reproach. There's a couple of runs that are sloppy, and right before he puts the guitar on his head he does a slide that falls one fret short of the note that he intended. and he doesn't play the iconic four-measure statement of the song the way it's written which actually is annoying to my ear because that's the way it isn't my memory. At the end of the 4th bar are notes are down up down. Glenn stops on the down and doesn't do the up down. da da tah, da da dot dot dot. Glen plays the run-up and the Rundown and stops. da da tah, da da tah. I don't know why he doesn't that way but it's not the way it's written. The notes are only 1/4 apart. It's a very important part of the Rhythm . Now I'll pick up the guitar and find the note at the end of that slide he missed. I happen to like the song because of it's musical sophistication and glen does a great job on the really difficult melody but he does not sound like Glen Campbell. but it's an example of how unfocused Glen was. There is not a trace of country in this. He's simply an interpretive artist. Put a song in front of him and he'll give it his best shot. The song went nowhere, his career was going nowhwhere until The Smothers Brothers TV show put "Gentle on my Mind" on the map and then came the 3 Jimmy Webb songs. Then people started coming to him and he ends up with a TV show and the rest is history. But "Guess I'm Dumb" was the 7th single and had gone nowhere. One of the amazing things is that Glen is flat picking here but he also has a video playing acoustic where doing finger style and hes every bit as good. Mind blowing talent
Even though he is suffering from Alzheimer's disease now, it will still be a very sad day when he is gone. Not many have appreciated how great a musician he really has been. There are so very few that have even come close t him and the world will be a poorer place without him.

At one point I realized my jaw had dropped. I know the guy is amazing but read "The Wreaking Crew" it's about the session musicians, Glenn' story is included. Damn! and he did it on a 12 string!
This is beautiful. Glenn Campbell also did this live on his “Live At Royal Festival Hall” album in 1977. Royal Festival Hall is located in London, England, UK.
It's 10/29/23 and I'm still mesmerized by this performance of that Overture. Glen ranks with the best of them. And besides a member of the Wrecking Crew, he was a member of my favorite band- the Beach Boys- as a bass player! He was a multi-dimensional phenom. He's right there with guitarists like Django Reinhardt, Leslie Paul, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Roy Clark, Jim Stafford, and Jose Feliciano to name other phenoms.

Glen was a highly regarded studio musician and a member of the infamous Wrecking Crew along with other notables like Leon Russell. I believe it was Tommy Smothers that pushed him into the lime light. He was a part of our lives sound tracts and isn't it true that we appreciate them more than ever after they're gone. RIP Glen.

Ummm, well ,actually, there have been rip-sorting guitars around for a long time, but it's called "shred" within one little segment of the music world. Like, I don't know SPECIFICALLY which classical guitarist was the first to play some of the Paganini Caprices for solo violin, but certainly they were in circulation by the 1940's. Eliot Fisk was Segovia's student, so he probably pick them up there. If you want to get terrorized, Fisk recorded all 24 of them (better than this). Steve Vai actually played an excerpt from the 5th one in the "Crossroads" movie, but the classical guys (and flamenco!) were there first. And yet I've never seen Glen's name on any list of greatest guitar players. As a non musician can anyone explain why he is not recognised. I may be wrong but Glen could play any genre, not sure other recognised guitarists could say the same. What am I missing ?
Glen was a monster guitarist -- he was playing over his head long before Jimi Hendrix decided to do so. I heard that rock guitarist-extraordinaire Eddie Van Halen had asked Alice Cooper (a friend of Glen Campbell's) if he could get him a guitar lesson with Glen. And this was when Eddie was on top of the mountain as a lead guitarist. This video alone could prove why. That was a 12-string electric guitar -- and playing a 12-string is not easy on a classical melody with that speed and accuracy.
As a college student, I once played, w/ other guitar students, The Blue Danube Waltz (slow) for a recital; it was challenging enough. THIS was beyond amazing!!

I got to see Glen on his Goodbye Tour in Grand Prairie, TX. This was early in the tour and he was great. They played this song, He rocked it!

To those of you who did not like this, no overdrive, 12 string guitar, pure talent, if you can’t see that, there’s no hope for you.
Can't believe *anyone* could dislike this, seriously. Playing a 12-string particularly takes talent, not everyone is good at it and the great ones make it look easy. I have to wonder though if he ever played Malaguena privately, I bet he did and he aced it 😂
One of the amazing things is that Glen is flat picking here but he also has a video playing acoustic where doing finger style and hes every bit as good. Mind blowing talent

Even though he is suffering from Alzheimer's disease now, it will still be a very sad day when he is gone. Not many have appreciated how great a musician he really has been. There are so very few that have even come close t him and the world will be a poorer place without him.
Truth teller You are absolutely right about that. Mr Campbell was the absolute best at so many musical issues. I am so glad that I got to see him before he had to quit touring. Amazing.

At one point I realized my jaw had dropped. I know the guy is amazing but read "The Wreaking Crew" it's about the session musicians, Glenn' story is included. Damn! and he did it on a 12 string!

It's 10/29/23 and I'm still mesmerized by this performance of that Overture. Glen ranks with the best of them. And besides a member of the Wrecking Crew, he was a member of my favorite band- the Beach Boys- as a bass player! He was a multi-dimensional phenom. He's right there with guitarists like Django Reinhardt, Leslie Paul, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Roy Clark, Jim Stafford, and Jose Feliciano to name other phenoms.

Glen was a highly regarded studio musician and a member of the infamous Wrecking Crew along with other notables like Leon Russell. I believe it was Tommy Smothers that pushed him into the lime light. He was a part of our lives sound tracts and isn't it true that we appreciate them more than ever after they're gone. RIP Glen.

Ummm, well ,actually, there have been rip-sorting guitars around for a long time, but it's called "shred" within one little segment of the music world. Like, I don't know SPECIFICALLY which classical guitarist was the first to play some of the Paganini Caprices for solo violin, but certainly they were in circulation by the 1940's. Eliot Fisk was Segovia's student, so he probably pick them up there. If you want to get terrorized, Fisk recorded all 24 of them (better than this). Steve Vai actually played an excerpt from the 5th one in the "Crossroads" movie, but the classical guys (and flamenco!) were there first. They don't WORK slow!

As a lot of people say, this is sloppy. And he wears pink and looks like Woody Allen. So, smoke him, huh? I think for real terror-twankin', the flamenco guys got it ALL. Power, speed, improvisational ability, hot chicks, low morals, everything EXCEPT the Marshall stacks. And the spandex.
And yet I've never seen Glen's name on any list of greatest guitar players. As a non musician can anyone explain why he is not recognised. I may be wrong but Glen could play any genre, not sure other recognised guitarists could say the same. What am I missing ?

Glen was a monster guitarist -- he was playing over his head long before Jimi Hendrix decided to do so.
I heard that rock guitarist-extraordinaire Eddie Van Halen had asked Alice Cooper (a friend of Glen Campbell's) if he could get him a guitar lesson with Glen. And this was when Eddie was on top of the mountain as a lead guitarist. This video alone could prove why. That was a 12-string electric guitar -- and playing a 12-string is not easy on a classical melody with that speed and accuracy.

actually the tune they playing is called the march of the swiss soldiers. william tell overture have 4 parts which the march of the swiss soldiers is the finale. kudos for making such a fine tune
