Needless to say we stayed for the second show too. During the break, a crew member came out and tuned Glen's guitars with some sort of electronic device. As soon as Glen came out for the second show he picked up his guitars and started tuning them by ear. He was said to have perfect pitch. There is a stunning version of this piece I have heard that isn't an orchestra...it's just Glen Campbell, with one guy keeping rhythm on what sounds like a hi-hat. He plays EVERYTHING...on a 12-string guitar.
I've always liked Glen Campbell and his music. I'm sorry he's gone, but at least he left us the beautiful legacy of his music and videos like this. RIP Glen!
When you can play at this level you know you've arrived on the world stage as one of the all time greatest guitar players ever. Glen you may be gone but you are not forgotten.
Glen will never be forgotten. And as a vocalist, I think I began to really love his tone even more, as he grew older. His range dipped down into baritone territory. He could hit those low notes now, which I don't think he could hit before. And his tone got a bit grittier. You can hear that with his brief sorties with Jimmy Webb, one-on-one. Same thing goes for George Jones, he kept going from a tenor to a baritone as he got older. He could always hit those low notes if he wanted to, but now even his speaking voice got really, really deep.
I never fully appreciated what a great singer he was until he was gone and I was an older adult in my late 60's. Now, I could listen to him all the time. Truly one of the great singers of our time. ❤
I'm 52 and was raised on rock and roll in the 70's-80's. To this day I am a long-haired butt-rocker that blasts Metallica and Tool at the volume of 11. When I heard of Mr. Campbell's diagnosis and subsequent "Goodbye" tour in 2012, I couldn't buy tickets fast enough and drove almost 3 hours (one way) to the Little Creek Casino in Shelton, WA just to see history in the making. I've seen hundreds of concerts, and that was one of the best ever. Certainly the only one I've ever shed a tear at..... RIP to one of the best we ever had.
There was a special on TV re the Goodbye tour. It was riveting. His wife allowed him to tour until he lost too much of his memory, but man, he still created magic when he played
WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT? I’ve been listening to Glenn Campell since the late 60s and new he was a great singer then ( Iwas pretty young) It was along time after that I realized that he’s one of the best guitarist ever.
My wife and I met Glen at the North Phoenix Baptist Church, where he was a member, shortly after we met him we were invited to a pot luck at Alice Coopers house! what wonderful days those were, and what gentle, kind and genuine people they all were! Sometimes I wish we could turn back the clock...Pastor Jackson and the rest were such amazing people. We need a million more like them
You got to have dinner with Glen Campbell and Alice Cooper??!! DAD GUM! So Jealous! My late husband got to see Jimi Hendrix in concert twice, but dinner with those two characters tops that, I think.
I remember Glen’s short-lived TV show and I always loved his top 40 hits. But this freaking blew me away! This song means a lot to me, as my mom used to prance a stuffed horse around my crib singing it and later I enjoyed the Lone Ranger tv show. Little known fact: The Lone Ranger is the great uncle of the Green Hornet (who also had an awesome theme song!).
OMG.. same here. Lost one but downgraded two that will go home! We will get thru this... and thanks to Glenn and Elvis.... I will go in tomorrow! Bless us all and especially.... Glenn... RIP.
Glen got his first guitar at age four and never learned how to read music - he was a prodigy, not given enough credit for his many talents. Truly a Giant in the History of Music
@@gatecam I really enjoy his version of Yesterday When I was Young - many big names sang that tune back in the day, including Andy Williams Roy Clark and one of my favorite female voices of all time Dusty Springfield. Glen hits the opening note just perfect, then a delay - for some reason, I don't hear that delay in any other version so I am sure it was personalized. Check it out, thanks for the Hello.
@@williamordway2872 Yes, that was sad, but he stayed brave and kept going to the end. What was really great was to see him on stage, while ill, with his daughter and wow what a teem.
Absolutely!!! Glen Campbell voice was un- mistakable. I'm 62 now, even as a young man, I enjoyed his music. R.I.P Glen Campbell,. Your music we'll live in history.
Glen Campbell is a once in a generation talent; artistic, playful, gifted and sharp as a razor. I have listened to him from the early 70s up to the time he retired. He outshone his generation, that's for sure. Bless you Glen, you're a true legend.
Usually when he played with the all time great guitarists... of any musical genre.... they would just stop and watch. They knew they were seeing something truly unique and rare. Absolutely phenomenal guitar player
There is a wonderful clip somewhere of him and Roy Clarke on a TV show (probably Glenn's). They were playing together and it was beyond wonderful. And yet (some will toss bricks at me for this), I got the distinct impression that Glenn was holding back a bit. With Roy Frickin' Clark, one of the best ever. He could do it all, he did it all. I believe he made a six figure income as a _studio musician_ at one time before he took off on his own. Think of that one.
Never thought I’d see an electric guitar rendition by a country star put most classical orchestras to shame with this piece. I guess we are born to be proven wrong! 👍 👍
I was protecting a record producer back in the eighties and he had a falling out with Glen Campbell. I never talk about clients but in this case, since Glen has passed, I'd like to say that the story I heard from the producer made me really respect Glen Campbell. And yeah, I love his playing.
July 30,2020 - during this time of chaos, division, and darkness this video makes me smile. This is an example of people coming together, from different genres, generations, cultures, using discipline, skills, and passion, to create something beautiful. Our world misses Glenn, and anyone in this video, and needs more like them to step up.
Glen Campbell was a legend in his own lifetime. Session musician on many recordings, and took off when he played backup with many stars then had his own shows. His daughter Ashley is brilliant in her own right. RIP.
"Session musician on many recordings" Yeah, when you look at the list it seems almost impossible, it is SOOOO long, and with songs all of us grew up and loved. I remember hearing some bands in the 70s, without the session guys backing them up, and they were often extremely thin, by comparison. There are some session groups out there now doing their own music and some of it is spectacular. Tim Akers and the Smoking Section and Bottom 40 come immediately to mind. It is some of the tightest music you will hear. Try Higher Ground with Dave Weckl and Jay Oliver on drums, it is amazing. Had a few top hits too, one was about a power technician, IIRC. :-)
My God . this is a twelve string he is playing , so clean and crisp .... Glen Campbell is one of the most under rated musicians of all times. When you factor in both his voice and guitar playing ... is there anyone that matches this guy ? Thanks for the great memories Glen ... you were the best !!!
There was more talent in Glen Campbell's little pinkie than all of Nashville combined. I can't recall the number but he has been on ... over 400 albums. Played every genre' of music with impeccable skill and imagination. (Never could read music and he started out as a studio musician. He'd hear the song once or twice and know what to do with it.)
In his wife's book, she writes how Jimmy Webb said that Glen was a great singer, so much so that the music studios wanted him to work that angle. Similar to Nat King Cole, who was an exceptional piano player. In his case too the voice was what the studios prized. But it is so apparent that Glen Campbell was an absolute guitar virtuoso. I miss him, he was so talented and utterly unique. RIP
Saw him at the county fairgrounds in Northern California; and he played 7 or 8 instruments. Not showing off -- Glen Campbell was humbly displaying his talents. WOW factor -- price of admission was very reasonable. Now, THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT!!!. Real musician in an outdoor venue; no after market bells and whistles-- just pure skilled & talented charismatic program.
In Sept., 1967, Glen appeared in concert along with Lynn Anderson and Red Foley (the headliner) in Salt Lake City. After the show, I joined Glen and his band and hit a local nightclub. Glen jumped up on the bandstand and jammed with the house band for awhile. After that, we headed for an all-night coffee shop where we stayed until 5:30 in the morning telling jokes and listening to stories. Glen was funny, friendly and a truly great guy to hang out with. God bless and take care of him.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful story. I have a copy of a newspaper ad for a country & western show in Salt Lake City with Red Foley and Lynn Anderson, let's see if I can find it. Glen Campbell Forums ~Michel
The fact that he's playing this at that tempo and on a twelve string is a testament to what an awesome and incredible musician he really was. And doing it on top of his head no less. No wonder he was one of the most loved and sought after studio players ever!! Performing on over 600 record's from the mammas and papas to the beach boys and many more the whole music industry and the world lost a great man!! We'll miss you Glen.
Where was the standing ovation for this?!! I would have been out of my seat with the last chord of music!! It gives me chills to see and hear this on RUclips! I can’t begin to imagine what it would have been like to have experienced it live!! Glen, you were totally amazing! RIP❤
Glen Campbell was such an amazing talent and stood out in a class by himself. It's such a treat to watch his videos and listen to the wonderful sounds he was capable of producing; his performances were impeccable.
As a self admitted classic rock nut I am ashamed to just be discovering this guitar god. Someone at work was telling me how unrecognized this man was for his skills. I knew of him only from certain songs but came home and watched some you tube vids. To say I am blown away is an understatement!!!! Now the guy with the Led Zep Tatts is going to work telling people Glen Campbell had chops up their with Pagey. Every time I see another video both stuns me and amazes me.
I agree completely! If you want to see some amazing guitar work, look up "Roy Clark Malaguena". My favorite version is the one he did on The Odd Couple. Swear I needed a cigarette afterwards.
Glen and Roy Clark are exceptional guitar players and Roy is equally super good with the Banjo as well. Glen told a joke at one of the concerts where he said that the 2 of them had a deal. Glen wouldn't play Malaguena, and Roy wouldn't play William Tell Overture. Did you know that Glen was a member of the famous "Wrecking Crew"? The people who were in that group were the absolute best sessions players around....ANYWHERE!! Glen was always the one who was requested by so many music giants from Sinatra to Elvis and Johnny Cash just to name a few, and that was just for his guitar skills. He never learned to read music, he could hear something once and play it, he had perfect pitch, and it was somewhere in those years that the famous singers found out that Glen could sing as well as play. He spent a year as a Beach Boy when Brian Wilson took time off, probably for rehab. Then when Tommy and Dick Smothers had the chance, they gave Glen his summer Goodtime Hour. As we know the rest is history. What brings me to tears is at the end of the documentary "I'll be me", as they are putting the finishing touches on "I'm not gonna miss you", it shows that the musicians accompanying him are all from The Wrecking Crew. I apologize if I told you more than you really wanted to hear.
Alice Cooper, a pal of Glen's, once said Eddie Van Halen begged for Cooper to set up a meeting with Campbell for a guitar "lesson". Van Halen was blown away by Campbell.
I've always thought that had to be the highest praise for a performer to have someone from a whole other genre look up to them. It was amazing how people looked up to Chet Atkins. There's a special called "certified guitar picker" and they said people were begging to get on the show.
It took me decades to find out how utterly brilliant Glenn Campbell was as a guitarist as I knew him mostly for being a vocalist. Thank god for the internet and how it showed us how fantastic Glenn was as an all round musician and member of The Wrecking Crew, let alone a solo artist. Rest in Peace you extremely talented man.
Sir, you are sorely missed. All the more so when I hear a performance like this. And the other comment is right: there should have been a standing ovation.
You're spot on, but he was taking that trip down dementia lane (he passed of Alzheimer's about 3 yrs after he recorded this) and just maybe a standing O might have shook him.
Please let us remember the excellence in this greatest of the greats, Glen Campbell to have done one of the greatest of all, The William Tell Overture with a full orchestra . I heard it once said Glen Campbell would really walk into a recording session and ask to "sit-in" . He truly is a remarkable individual to have hoisted that guitar up onto his back and kept perfect time as he played. I had pulled off a bit of the Foggy Mt. Breakdown on my banjo hoisted up. But, this is a totally different ball game all together. Glen Campbell the greatest.

There is a stunning version of this piece I have heard that isn't an orchestra...it's just Glen Campbell, with one guy keeping rhythm on what sounds like a hi-hat. He plays EVERYTHING...on a 12-string guitar.
He wasn't on the same page as the orchestra because he couldn't read music.
It must have been utterly terrifying to be 1st violin behind this guy.
Yup
Anyone who grew up with and loved the Lone Ranger has tears in their eyes right now. Thank you Glen.
Absolutely. He and my late wife of 51 years both died from Alzheimer's. A horrible disease to say the least.
Yes i had tears in my eyes. Lucky to meet the Lone Ranger in Manhattan in 1977
So true❤
I've always liked Glen Campbell and his music. I'm sorry he's gone, but at least he left us the beautiful legacy of his music and videos like this. RIP Glen!
Indeed; Glen was unreal in his abilities as a guitarist. Hats off to you Glen!
He played the guitar like it was as easy as walking across the room with no thought, not even looking at his guitar half the time! Amazing!
Glen Campbell was truly one of the GREATS...! I'm lucky to have grown up with the 'Wichita Lineman's music 💙
I never fully appreciated what a great singer he was until he was gone and I was an older adult in my late 60's. Now, I could listen to him all the time. Truly one of the great singers of our time. ❤
I don't think even Rossini would have imagined that this could be played on a guitar by anyone! Wow!!!
The world has lost one the greatest guitarists of all time.
ON a 12 string?!?!?!? He was a far, far better musician than most of the fans of his hits every realized.
Great guitarist, excellent singer & nice guy!!!
Definitely in the top 5 guitar players of all time.
yep.....summed it right up Scout. Played all that on a 12 string......PHUQUE!!!!!
I thought the same thing. wow, and on a 12s no less. wow
Alics cooper was a good friend of his and nEddie Van Halen asked Alice to get him a guitar lesson with Glen
I never thought I'd see Glen Campdell play something like this. Classic!
Check out his performance of "Classical Gas" 👍
His musical ability was off the charts. RIP Glenn Campbell
Met him on a plane as a child loved him ever since. you were not a guitarist in the seventies or eighties until you got a lesson from Glen boom
Goes to show, your appearance really has nothing to do with what you listen to.
There was a special on TV re the Goodbye tour. It was riveting. His wife allowed him to tour until he lost too much of his memory, but man, he still created magic when he played
@@musicfanhawk4523 Who ever said that it did ?
amen to that
Volume knob on 11 shows our age lol
Remember, Glenn was a member of the LA Studio band "The Wrecking Crew." He was a musician first and foremost. One heck of a guitar playr. RIP....
We need a million more like them
Coming again, soon, to a world near US!
You got to have dinner with Glen Campbell and Alice Cooper??!! DAD GUM! So Jealous! My late husband got to see Jimi Hendrix in concert twice, but dinner with those two characters tops that, I think.
Absolutely....and irrevocably.ok
How amazing you had dinner with Glen Campbell and Alice Cooper thats just a dream what a wonderful experience you have had.
I had heard that Alice Cooper and Glenn Campbell played golf together. But I cannot imagine the conversation at your dinner party! Amazing.
Miss this guy so much.He just got better and better. RIP, Glen.
OmG, I do too!!! Good times when Glenn and alot of the other great ones ( who we have lost lately ) were here!! GLENN for sure!!!
@Hello Richard how are you doing
Glen Campbell was one of the greatest guitarists of his era if not all time.
I sure miss him! 😢
to those of you who did not know how much of a musical genius we lost when Glenn Campbell passed.....now you know.
I regret to say I was one. I had no idea
I've only learnt in later years how talented he was.
He had a beautiful voice! Loved his songs and his TV show. RIP.
Hey, whoever is in charge of modern music, yall are grounded until you put talent back in to it. This is why I listen to classic country music.
OMG.. I needed that. Been on the Covid Unit all day and trying to decompress. Thank you Glen for a lifetime of joy.
Thank You.
OMG.. same here. Lost one but downgraded two that will go home! We will get thru this... and thanks to Glenn and Elvis.... I will go in tomorrow! Bless us all and especially.... Glenn... RIP.
God bless you for taking care of people.
Thank you. ❤️
Glen got his first guitar at age four and never learned how to read music - he was a prodigy, not given enough credit for his many talents. Truly a Giant in the History of Music
Couldn't agree more. I'me in my mid sixties and had records of his when I was a young boy. To this day I love to listen to his music.
He was truly talented and very overlooked. So sad he suffered with that awful disease.
@@williamordway2872 Yes, that was sad, but he stayed brave and kept going to the end. What was really great was to see him on stage, while ill, with his daughter and wow what a teem.
Maybe never learned music itself but man he had the timing down!
^..^~~
Talent the world will never see again, Glenn, Roy Clark, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reid--- no one better in their field.
Amen
You need to get out more if you think that's true.
Buck Ownes
agree
We’re going to wait along time ..
Amazing, Absolutely Amazing Glenn really was something talented abd great!! And So Handsome Back then..RIP GLENN❤❤💔😇😇😇😇
Unbelievable. The country guys like him and Roy Clarke never get the credit they deserve. You're talking 12 string there. Just amazing work.
I hadn't noticed that ! Makes this even more amazing and enjoyable!
Agree! The Best!
He played a lot more music than just country music. He played on the Beach Boys albums too.
He toured as a beach boy taking brian place @thehighlander959
Glen Campbell has to be one of the best guitarist to ever play a guitar rock, pop whatever genre you like.
Truly one of the greatest guitarists ever!! RIP Glen
God blessed America... 0:14 I pray He does so again.
What a talented and wonderful man Glen was. I am grateful that I got to experience him in my lifetime.
Epic. And nice to see John Major found work after being British Prime minister playing Cello there at 0:57
Please don't give up the day job your patter is shite
RIP Glen Campbell!! You were one of the finest guitarists that ever lived!!!
Absolutely!!! Glen Campbell voice was un- mistakable. I'm 62 now, even as a young man, I enjoyed his music. R.I.P Glen Campbell,. Your music we'll live in history.
Actually the finest of them all.
Absolutely fabulous.....both Glen Campbell and the orchestra. What incredible talent !
One of the finest musicians to walk the face of the earth
@blake bishop oh don't.
Extraordinary talent! On a 12 string too... Fabulous heroic memories. 😀
One of the greatest guitarists EVER!
Lord! That man could play! So amazing!
Absolutely loved by many people who sing and play. He had a gift, and didn't waste it. RIP
Maybe the best guitar performance of this song EVER! Such a legend!
Glen Campbell is a once in a generation talent; artistic, playful, gifted and sharp as a razor. I have listened to him from the early 70s up to the time he retired. He outshone his generation, that's for sure. Bless you Glen, you're a true legend.
he was so incredible talented!!
Roy Clark was right up there with him.
Unbelievable. Never thought he could do this. Greatest ever guitar player. Thank you, Glen Campbell.
Glad I got to see Glen Campbell at WinStar Casino. Glen said: "I'm happy to be here, of course at my age, I'm happy to be anywhere...".
listening to this i ran a 26 mile marathon in 3 minutes 31 seconds......thanks glen.
Could not stop smiling and remembering the good ol days. What a talent.
Wow!! I never knew Glenn Campbell was so immensely talented!!! 🤩
Usually when he played with the all time great guitarists... of any musical genre.... they would just stop and watch.
They knew they were seeing something truly unique and rare. Absolutely phenomenal guitar player
WOW indeed 😊
I'd love to hear the story.
That audience looked pretty White to e.
@@whaszis your answer seems pretty dark to me.
100 % true. I had tears in my eyes watching this !
Man... Mr Dilly had forgotten just how.. Phenomenal a guitarist Glenn truly was...We will Miss you Forever..RIP Mr Campbell 👍🎸😎❤️🙏
Glen Campbell was a legend in his own lifetime. Session musician on many recordings,
and took off when he played backup with many stars then had his own shows.
His daughter Ashley is brilliant in her own right. RIP.
"Session musician on many recordings"
Yeah, when you look at the list it seems almost impossible, it is SOOOO long, and with songs all of us grew up and loved.
I totally agree, and there is someone who matches, his name is Keith Urban. Glen was one of his idols.
@@bevtuft3572 how about Brad Paisley or Vince Gill?
@@bevtuft3572 Keith Urban met Glen once when he was a child; Glen gave him good advice!
RIP
agree!!
Amen
That was the most amazing guitar phenomenon I have witnessed in a while. That was incredible as a show of talent.
Surely at least one of these comments mentioned that he was a “Wrecking Crew” member for a while even though he couldn’t read music.
That man has also to be remembered as one of the best guitarists ever. Thank you Glen, we lost you to a terrible illness, RIP
Glen Campbell Forums ~Michel
thanks so much for telling that story. that's exactly what I thought he'd be like.
That is one truly cool story. Thanks for sharing it.
love me like you do
Jim Southern
That's a beautiful story Jim! x
RIP❤
On a 12 string, no less...the more I see of GC, the more impressed I am...
Yes, and was that an 8 string Mandolin?
God this is amazing! Anyone who can play like this is genius. Glen Campbell was great and his music lives on😊
Campbell couldn't read music but was one of the finest musicians to have ever lived.
Absolutely phenomenal! How could the audience not be on their feet after a performance like that? Incredible!
Lots of creaky old knees and back in the audience that make gettin' a real chore .. I can relate, but would've at least tried :-)
Most likely, "STUNNED," not believing what they just saw and heard ...
Most couldn't rise to go to the bathroom.
How in the hell can anyone, regardless, In the in world, beat this???? A natural genious.
What a JOY watching Glen Campbell play guitar THANK YOU
Glen Campbell was such an amazing talent and stood out in a class by himself. It's such a treat to watch his videos and listen to the wonderful sounds he was capable of producing; his performances were impeccable.
Indeed you are very Correct Truth .. I have been to he’s Concerts twice and it was worth it .. How about you ?
As a self admitted classic rock nut I am ashamed to just be discovering this guitar god. Someone at work was telling me how unrecognized this man was for his skills. I knew of him only from certain songs but came home and watched some you tube vids. To say I am blown away is an understatement!!!! Now the guy with the Led Zep Tatts is going to work telling people Glen Campbell had chops up their with Pagey. Every time I see another video both stuns me and amazes me.
Roy Clark is a great also you should check him out.
I agree completely! If you want to see some amazing guitar work, look up "Roy Clark Malaguena". My favorite version is the one he did on The Odd Couple. Swear I needed a cigarette afterwards.
Have already. Countless vids. Really like Roy and Glen tearing it up on a searing Ghost riders in the sky.
Survivrs those are the kind of stories I love!
Alice Cooper, a pal of Glen's, once said Eddie Van Halen begged for Cooper to set up a meeting with Campbell for a guitar "lesson". Van Halen was blown away by Campbell.
Interesting.
@@parallelpost search on YT for the interview with "Alice". There are some gems.
I've always thought that had to be the highest praise for a performer to have someone from a whole other genre look up to them. It was amazing how people looked up to Chet Atkins. There's a special called "certified guitar picker" and they said people were begging to get on the show.
When a man can be so good at whatever he attempts on the guitar with such ease it's clear that we dealing with nothing less than a genius.
Glenn just earned a spot in my list of "Guitar Gods" 😀
It took me decades to find out how utterly brilliant Glenn Campbell was as a guitarist as I knew him mostly for being a vocalist. Thank god for the internet and how it showed us how fantastic Glenn was as an all round musician and member of The Wrecking Crew, let alone a solo artist. Rest in Peace you extremely talented man.
8 minutes past midnight and I still can not stop listening to the music of my childhood.
+Banjo Greg Cantrell - We greatly appreciate your comment, so much so that we posted it on Glen Campbell's Forums On The Net. We hope you'll visit Glen's forums when you can. www.GlenCampbellForums.com.
We would like to ask you if you are familiar with Glen's banjo pickin' technique. We read recently that Glen was a flat picker and mostly played the banjo like a guitar. Would you know about his pickin' style? Thank you again for your comment. ~Dee, Co-Admin
