- Glen aces an instrumental composition by Mason Williams. More on Glen's guitars at: www.glencampbellforums.com/vie....
With acknowledgement to the wonderful musicians with the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra who are performing here with Glen Campbell. - Видеоклипы
Man, I am sitting here with tears streaming down my cheeks, watching an immortal genius with his lone instrument, holding his own with a hundred highly trained symphony musicians armed with sheet music and stands, and not one of them could touch him if they tried, nor even all of them together. Nothing and nobody can hold a candle to the immortal Glen Campbell.
Michael Thompson best of many
Amen brother
No disrespect to the symphony musicians, this song would be shallow and incomplete without them. But to me, Glen's talent is equal to the entire lot of the symphony orchestra and makes this piece so incredibly more than special.
No disrespect may be intended but the statement "Glen's talent is equal to the entire lot of the symphony orchestra and makes this piece so incredibly more than special." is nonsense. There are maybe 70 people backing Glen up. Many of them have decades of training and experience playing their instruments. To say Glen has more talent than all these people combined is hyperbole. Understand that you love Glen's performance more than the symphony's but the comment was not credible as well as disrespectful ---again.
Oh come on Robert....we all love who we love. Just accept that Glen IS a great talent and Michael REALLY loves him...as do I and millions of others. We all have our idols.. probably you as well. We don't have to nit-pick everything to death.
No one ever says "WHAT AN ABSOLUTELY AWESOME PIECE OF MUSIC"
Mason Williams is an all time legend for this one damned thing.
As a teenager, that was the theme from Championship Wrestling on Channel 43.
I say it's awesome, this is one of my favorite songs of my life. My dad bought the Mason Williams Phonograph record when I was ten, and I still love it - and I know all the lyrics for the non-instrumental songs.
Or, what a prolific guitar player
Glen Campbell cover version of "Classical Gas" was amazing ! A very much admired country musician for decades to come. Love his music!+
Yep
Every time I watch this I’m speechless. So obvious that he was enjoying it so much. Love that he turned to the orchestra and acknowledged them. A true gentleman and one of a kind musician. We lost a legend when he passed. Love you Glen😥💕
Glen was an awesome celebrity
Few realize how talented Glen Campbell really was. Rest peacefully, mighty guitar man.
Sustenance. I am loving it. Superb guitarist who played by ear.
Absolutely, Eric. In an online conversation with a relative of Glen, I shared my long held suspicion that the "suits" of Nashville were never terribly interested in marketing his guitar skills. As with many artists, they focused instead on his vocal talent, which, for them, was (and still is) the medium that sells the record. What a terrible slap in the face of discerning fans. But that's how it works in today's "pop" country culture.
@@johnpastirchak1053 interesting point - that marketing him as the wonderful singer he was made him more accessible. It should be emphasized, though, as you probably are aware, Glen Campbell was a highly sought-after studio musician prior to the singing career. A musician's musician in the LA scene. Today, possibly, he could have more easily sold himself as guitarist-singer (not that today's music is of the highest quality). Could have crossed over genres more.
@@clips001ify -- Yes, sought after indeed. In fact, Glen scored a few miles with music's legendary studio ensemble, "The Wrecking Crew." Not bad for a self-taught musician.
Yeah I had no idea he was such a great guitarist.
I had no idea how great this musician was growing up; the guy was incredible.
RIP Mr.Glen Cambell
same here.....
Many didnt
Me two.. just appreciating him now. What a great musician.
Add me to the list. I recognized the subtle, understated genius in such classics like "Wichita Lineman" even as a child, right to "Southern Nights" but like most, never knew he could not even read music, but was one of the fabled "Wrecking Crew" studio musicians.
The small cadre of professional musicians amongst professional musicians, the ones you call when you want perfect execution right out of the gate. Quite frankly, most if not all of his commercial music was not a full expose' of his immense talent.
It's like an old college friend that got to be backstage during a RUSH concert and got to see Neil Pert do his warm up routine. He said that he was blown away, listening to this genius level musician let loose like he would never play during a concert with the prescribed list of recorded songs they were performing live for the fans.
Neither did Rolling Stone Magazine! He didn’t even get an honorable mention in their list of the best ever guitar players. Sad.
I'm a bit ashamed of myself. I listened to Glen through the 60's and 70's enjoying his voice and lyrics, but it's only in recent years I became aware of Glen's full talent as a brilliant guitarist. You were the full package Mr Campbell !!
Elsewhere in this concert he plays the bagpipes. It really is worth listening to the whole presentation.
He is a real gem.
Same here
I was very young in the 60's but certainly remember him from a few of his popular songs and TV appearances. Only with his passing and some RUclips videos did I realize his talent as a guitarist and musician. OMG!!!
ColinChris Nicoll - the same here. All that I was originally aware of was his vocal talent.
Such a multi talented man and treasure!!
R.I.P. Glen!!
The legendary Glenn Campbell playing the great Mason Williams! Spectacular.
Hi Kathleen, how are you doing
Glen Campbell was one of the best guitarists in the world. He never strained and was always relaxed when he played (like Pavarotti when he sang). The orchestra absolutely rocks, which Glen was clearly impressed with. They bring in another level of emotion, and I can't imagine this song without them.
The Orchestra really kicks it up a level. I can't imagine what it was like being there to hear all 88 notes in their full glory.
Have you seen Pavarotti with James Brown? Get ready for tears.
@@PlanetRockJesus Im not impressed with either of them in their later years. Especially The Big P.

@@zapkvr0101ciao Kevin!🙋😊😍😘💘🍀
This is a fantastic piece of music played perfectly by that virtuoso Glen Campbell, backed by an awesome orchestra. They can carry me out in the casket with this one.
Who doesn't love Glen Campbell ? The Rhinestone cowboy's still got it.
"If there was a case of one man having too much talent in his body, it was Glen"- Merle Haggard.
I recall him saying that. how true
Totally agree sad loss
Yes. One of the greatest guitarists ever.
He is beautiful.
Lol I actually heard that statement and Merle he had tears in his eyes too
An absolute genius on the guitar. I've been playing guitar for 40 + years, and cannot come close to this man's talent. You are sorely missed, Glenn.
Alice Cooper says public ally that Eddie Van Halen asked Alice to get a lesson from Glen. Glen and Alice were weekly golf buddies.
The Wrecking Crew wouldn't have been the same without Glen Campbell.
Agree
I read that too.. both plagued by demons but both great performers. Campbell an outstanding guitarist .. one of the best. RIP..
I wish I was one eighth as good as Glen on guitar..
I'd be making money..
I have been a musician for 59 years when I was five years old I replay the drums piano, guitar, ukulele, and accordion. I’ve been playing them all ever since. this man here has been my idol for years. I would’ve loved to have shared a stage with Glen Campbell. I know every single one of his songs by heart ❤️ rip Glen Campbell you were my favorite artist😢
Glenn was one of the best all time performers he didn't get as much credit as he deserved
He was a ace session guitarist for years. A true virtuoso........played on thousands of records.
RIP.......
This man deserved a "standing ovation!" What a performance by Mr. Campbell and the orchestra! BRAVO!
And that is an ovation guitar,he signed a contract with ovation (a kaman company) that he would always use their guitars when performing live and in concert,I noticed Taylor swift plays one also
When you see this you realize how great he really was as an artist.
AGREE
He worked for years as a Studio musician before he got any recognition!😊
We also realize how lucky we were to have guys like him around.
This never gets old.
This is by far the best rendition of Classical Gas ever made. Thank you Glen Campbell, God bless
From what I understand, Campbell was part of the "Wrecking Crew" studio musicians. He couldn't read a lick of sheet music but picked up every nuance in one take.
An underappreciated American legend in his work and his character.
Mostly true in fact but Glen was or developed into a perfectionist especially in the studio. Relaxed, fun loving and flexible as a professional when it was time in the studio Glen was in charge of the production and direction of his music which was in every household whether you knew it or not. Underappreciated
He was the greatest guitarist ever! RIP Glen! We miss you!
As for "Classical Gas," i was in high school when i furst heard it and it made me cry, though I didnt know why. It's just so very beautiful! Now I'm 66 years old and it still brings a tear of joy and remembrance to my eye. Best guitar solo ever written!
Glenn Campbell and Roy Clark ... two of my favourite guitarists ... Glenn showing his mastery of the instrument here
Two greatest guitarists ever....period
Agreed. There's clips of them playing together -- pure gold. Find them if you haven't. But the amazing thing is that Roy always seems to be working much harder at it than Glenn.
Now, that in itself is amazing. I mean, c'mon -- it's Roy Clark. That's otherworldly.
It's so generous of him to play with an orchestra and give people the wonderful music. I think he just enjoyed playing music with other people and was really really great at it.
When I was growing up in British Columbia, Canada in the sixties and seventies, Glen Campbell's music was everywhere. It seems every home of every friend or relative had a few of his albums. Wichita Lineman, Gentle on my Mind, these were kind words and uplifting sounds during a time of terrible strife in the world. He was in a class of his own.
True guitar master..2024 and enjoying this music
He was one of the greatest guitar players to have ever lived. Brilliant. R.I.P Glen❤❤❤
He was quite good, but you might want to check out Tommy Emmanuel or Gabriel Quevedo (or Chet Atkins, Al Di Meola, Alex de Grassi, or...)
Those are fine players, but Glen is the whole package. Singer, actor, guitarist...star power.
Hi Sheila, how are you doing today
@@aaronaragon7838ciao Aaron!🙋😍😘💘🍀
A great entertainer, and an absolute monster on the guitar. Rock and roll guitar greats will tell you how brilliant he was.
Prince named Glen the best guitarist of all time.
How could anyone NOT like anything Glen Campbell did! He was the best singer and guitarist in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hello Lisa, how are you doing
Wow Have always known Glen Campbell as an Iconic Country & Western Singer and yet here he is playing a master piece Classical Gas..totally awesome ❤️❤️
Folks, some of us could play all our Lives and not be Great--Glen Campbell is one of the Greatest!!!
Such a difficult song to get right yet he made it look easy....what a talent....RIP
And he even added his own flair to it - amazing
And then go hear Tommy Emanuel s version mind blowing
R.I.P Mr. Campbell
It's an instrumental NOT a song.
Me as well. The most beautiful Classic Gas I have ever heard. God Bless u Glen. In rock and roll heaven!!🙏💋
My father introduced me to Glen Campbell's music when I was a child in the 70s.
I wish I had appreciated his music more at that time, the man was a virtuoso.
RIP Glen
I don't think he was ever given enough credit for his outstanding guitar playing skills
One of my earliest guitar heroes for sure ! I could practice 24 hours a day for 50 years and still never touch him as a musician. He was amazing !
What??? Go look at the jobs he did, (wrecking crew) the number of albums he sold, and his being given his own television show. What do you want???
He was by other guitar players, they all knew he was amazing
I totally agree
Glen Campbell's music left an impact on the world! That could never be matched!
Hi Darleen, how are you
Got chills listening, I love this instrumental since day one.. and Glenn Campbell so talented and Mason’s creation. God we all miss you That Damn Dementia takes decent young souls away… Miss and Love to Glenn and his family… Godspeed my friend…❤️🙏
There are days, that i am at home and this is going on repeat all day. Just change to the version of Mason Williams from time to time. Those are my most happy days. So great music.
How many people realise that Glen couldnt read music ? He heard music and ingested it, then played it perfectly and that was the mark of his real genius. The man also had a particular grace about him, his natural humility and easy going personality enabled others to warm to him in any setting. To witness him operate a 12 string Guitar with a surgeons finesse was a marvel never to be forgotten.
One of the greatest guitarists of his genre. A most underrated musician. Brilliant.
Part of Glen's greatness was he was a master of many genres because of his studio work with the Wrecking Crew. When asked if he thought he was better than Hendrix, Prince, etc. he simply said, "I'm more versatile".
He was being modest. He was better.
@@lucillecrown1812 that's a silly comment. Hendrix was a studio musician who could play anything, just take time to look at his history. Prince, like Glenn was certainly underrated. I'd certainly find it hard to decide who might be the best, although Hendrix, by far the most influential guitarist of the last 50 year's.
Not underrated, but more famous for song interpretation rather than guitar prowess
A Master.
One of the best and most underrated guitarists to walk the planet
sad, but true!
Not underrated by other guitar players. He was one of the best in Nashville, and man that's saying something.
Only underrated by those who didn't know, anybody who plays or knows guitar, just have to watch and listen to see and hear just how good he really was...Will be missed.
In a very touching interview Alice Cooper said that rock guys would ask Glen for lessons.
Glen wasn't underrated by the Beach Boys and countless other rock bands. Glen and other members of the wrecking crew were the actual musicians you heard on many, many rock and roll recordings in the 60's and 70's. Glen couldn't read music, but could hear a song and then play it. He was known to have perfect pitch as a vocalist. A musical genius who will be missed. RIP brother.
This is so awesome. Like others, I'm sitting here with tears streaming down my face not only for this performance but because of so many fond memories from my childhood. Beautiful.
This is one of the BEST recordings EVER!
Glen Campbell --- a true classic!
So many forget, because of his amazing vocal career, that Glenn was an accomplished studio musician.
Tvideo one of the greats.
@@louchat333 Glen and his contemporary, Roy Clark were both GREAT studio musicians and their talent was hugely underappreciated by a lot of people.
Tvideo Roy Clark was incredible too. I love watching old videos of him and of Glen Campbell. They both made it look so effortlessly. Truly amazing....both of them.
louchat333
Jerry Reed belongs in the list as well.
@CD Smith He can definitely play.
I really had no idea what an accomplished musician Glenn Campbell was. What an awesome performance of Mason Williams' wonderful composition.
Campbell did a summer replacement show for The Smothers Brothers. It was so well received he got his own show for three years. Here he's playing a song written by one of the writers on the Smothers Brothers show, Mason Williams. The song reached #1 in 1969 and received three Grammys. Glen plays it like the pro he is!
Glen was an underestimated guitarist by some but highly revered by others that knew him and his incredible talent! A class act for sure. R.I.P.!
If there was a theme song for my life, I’d choose this❤❤❤
What a talent , what a legacy. Stand in Beach Boy , Actor , composer , studio Guitarist , the list is endless , Rest in peace Glen Campbell.
I agree with the rest, but "actor" is a bit of a stretch! lol
Wrecking Crew member!!
I heard Glen say in an interview that he didn't really want to do "True Grit" but that John Wayne had asked him to and Glen said, Well, it was the Duke.... so... But boy, Glen could do everything but act. I adored the man anyway. Mrs. Mechanic here....
Don't forget he was a member of the Wrecking Crew. Couchgrouch
@@bobjohnson205 So??
Same here/woke up 15 years ago…..A international treasure!!!!!
I could sit and listen to Glen Campbell all day everyday a brilliant singer and an equally 1st class musician
The Man was truly a Master at his craft , Thank You Glen Campbell it was a pleasure !!!!!!!!!!!
I remember as a kid playing "tennis racket guitar" to Glen Campbell music. Amazing then and always.
Born in 1962 I grew up with his name due to the names popularity at the time. Always clean cut, well dressed and manors only a Mother could dream of her Son to have. Glen rolled with the changes of the times growing out his hair a little during the late 60's early 70's but he was in style and classy, eclectic in his style of guitar playing, producing and directing his studio cut albums and singles as a professional and a perfectionist for the love of the art. God's hand definitely touched his life from a very young age, admired, adored and loved by many. Thank God for Glen Campbell lives were changed by you! Thank you
I'm sure his legendary music may still change some lives.
Gee it must be my day for crying over great music. I loved Glen Campbell.
One of the all time greats. Who couldn't love him?
It must have been quite a surprise to Glen's doctor when he was born and he came out holding a guitar. He was truly one of the best guitar players of all time. RIP Glenn.
@klr vlr It's not her horror I wouldn't want to imagine, think about BIRTHING a guitar! I mean the mechanics of it.
the man...the legend...dare we all risk to be so great....
Damn, sitting here, flipping on my chair, hearing his guitar, the other instruments. Am i in heaven? I just can't stop listening. repeat, repeat, repeat. Thank you, fabulous Mister Glen Campell/ Mason Williams.
One of the very greatest guitar players of all time. I was thinking that the symphony was overwhelming his guitar, and then at 2:04 he upped the output volume of his guitar and stood in front of the monitors to hear himself better. RIP Glen.
True that. The Legend.
Glen was the only one without a sheet of music in front of him! He is doing it all from his memory. We will miss you.
my wife found recently that he did not use sheet music cause he couldn't read it.
That's how you know incredible talent. They can just hear a song a few times, and then play it- note for note.
If ever there was a person with too much talent for his own good, it was Glen Campbell
The one the only man the world is so much more empty now, but man what you left us all incredible, RIP GLEN
This man was a very accomplished singer in so many ways. He was a musician’s musician.
When you make guitar play look easy and effortless you've mastered the instrument. Glen, what a legend..a true master. RIP legend.
I don't know how one person can have so many talents and excel in them. Only Glen Campbell.
Hello 🤗, how are you
@@lukegrayson4273 doing well. I hope you are too.
I loved Glenn Campbell . He was a delightful entertainer taken too soon . He was a genius . I can’t wait to see him on the other side.
It’s a shame that most people think “Rhinestone Cowboy” when it comes to Glen Campbell rather than the guitar virtuoso that he is.
To be fair, his big hits were REALLY big hits. Not too surprising since they were Jimmy Webb (McArthur Park) songs.
He played with the beach boys, too cool.
@@budkopach3163 He was a session musician. Kind of a waste, that but ya gotta start somewhere. I was so used to his hits that did not in any way feature his guitar abilities. I was blown away when I got a bluegrass compliation album and he just blew his track out of the water. WHOA! Of course, I was always mad at him (unreasonaby) for taking over The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, but that was a CBS fuck up, not his fault. Still.....took me a long time to get over that.
@@byronp2311 The greatest guitar players in the world have always been session musicians. They're expected to be perfect everytime. A few, like Glen Campbell, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, successfully made the transition into recording stars.
That's because many mistake loud for skilled. Glen Campbell could play almost all of them under the table.
Awesome!! Glen was such a great guitarist as well as singer. Never missed one of the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour shows along with the many talents back then.....Where oh where has good music gone? Missing those days......RIP Glen!
Hi Marilyn, how are you doing
Bless him, he was a top notch guitarist. A legend. 😍
AND I will argue that this is the best rendition of this song that has ever been recorded.
I was the Production Mgr for a metropolitan orchestra in the 90's, and Mr. Campbell was one of our guests for a weekend Pops concert. An hour before curtain, I went down to check on him, and he was in his dress shirt and boxers, just casually ironing his own pants. We had a nice conversation about life music and touring. He was as polite, and genuine a human being as you could ever want to meet. I met a lot of artists in those years, but I think Glen Campell was one of the nicest I was ever lucky enough to meet. Godspeed Sir.
One of the best EVER!!.. Performing Mason Williams' Grammy Award winning classic "Classical Gas" Outstanding!!! 👏👏👏🎉🎉
RIP Glenn, you were an absolute musical genius. I miss you every time I see or hear your music.
Glen Campbell was a member of "The Wrecking Crew," the top notch group of L.A studio musicians who backed up many (or most) of the biggest acts of the sixties when they recorded.
Magnificently talented human being. RIP Glen, thanks for the music. 🇨🇦😊
YES!!!
Hi Ashleigh, how are you doing
I have played this song over 100 times and never get tired of hearing this great song and performance by Glen Campbell.
When concert’s were clean and the songs meant something. Those days are gone forever. What a Time it was. All Classic. CWA
Playing with this Orchestra was I believe his best.

He had so many unbelievable moments!
This Orchestra, just clicked with him on all cylinders!
Glenn could play anything and make it magical, what a talent.
I miss Glen to the core of my soul. He always shared his musical gifts and talent with us, with the greatest of joy and giving that any human could muster. Rest In Peace my dear friend Glen. Clearly, this is one of the most wonderful demonstrations of Glen's resounding guitar genius, and with one of the finest Philharmonic Orchestras in our great nation, the South Dakota Symphony. Yes, in this great rendition of Mason William's magnificent song; "Classical Gas", just listening to the power leaves anyone positively transformed. I wish I had the opportunity to have been present that night in Sioux Falls in 2001. Imagine, if you will, such musical beauty, and it is so difficult to believe it was the same year as the tragedy of 911. Glen was one of the bravest men I know. I listened carefully to the words of his lovely daughter Ashley, as she described how she and her brothers guided her dear father while he performed his magic on stage, well into his battle with Alzheimer's Disease. One day medical science will conquer that horrible disease, Alzheimer's, and Glen's suffering will not have been in vain. I have lost a family member to it. Another great gift of Glen's was his bravery in showing the world how to stand tall in the face of a terrible illness, and to do so with the greatest of dignity. Mr. Campbell, I salute you, as you look down upon us all, be safe my friend, on the Wichita Line. Thank you Sir, play and serenade all those who rest peacefully in heaven.

Unfortunately, just had this pop up on my recommended list on Christmas Day, 2020. One of the best Christmas presents I have ever had. Three minutes of sheer bliss.
So many don't even know him, some remember him from reruns on tv.
Those of us who now qualify as "seniors", as in baby boomers, remember Glen going back years. He was, and I still believe, IS one of the greatest guitarists of all time, as well as a great singer and songwriter.
In the 60's, Glen was one of the artists who inspired me to learn to play guitar.
Thank you for all of the incredible music you gave us, Glen, and God Bless, RIP.
I was iin the Navy in 1972. While hitchiking with a buddy from Norfolk to my home in Ocean City, NJ, we ran across a fellowwho was also hitching. It was much more common in those days. Anyway, he had with him a guitar that must have cost $20 new, and was beat to hell. to boot. I asked him to play something, not expecting much. Frankly, he looked like a bum. He asked me what I wanted to hear, and I thought of the most difficuld song I could think of. Without any hesitation, he banged out this song without missing a note. He playing was at once both delicate and strong.50 years later, I remember it like yesterday. I still wonder what became of him. Finally, kudos to the music of Glen Campbell. In an era filled with legends, he might have been the best. Nice to see him reemerging since his passing. I know he would appreciate that.
One of my favourite instrumental songs of all time. Man Glen really does make it sound Classical....

I have always been a fan of Mr. Campbell. I listen to greatest hits collection of his sounds regularly. Great all around musician.
I for one didn’t appreciate what an outstanding guitarist he was. I do now. Always dipped in and out of his music over 50 or so years and greatly admired him , but you can really see his appreciation of the other musicians input to this great performance. They really don’t make them like this anymore. Also, didn’t realize ‘til recently that he was a great and trusted chum of Alice Cooper. Really makes me so sad to see the passing of true greats and GC was a true great RIP….

Perhaps not recently, but in the late 60s & early 70s he was a star. He had several hit records and his own TV show, and has also won several Grammy's. In the late 70s - early 80s, struggles in his personal life and a rapidly changing music scene unfortunately took a toll on his musical output, but he remains a true legend and icon to those who remember him.
He had MASSIVE respect among his peers.
