    You should have the current group of artisans "sign" the roof the same way that the 18th Century artisans did. They are part of this chateau's history now.

    Dibs, before you had even said 'I am going to cry, just look at this beautiful wallpaper' I was crying. My eyes started welling up as each colour drops were revealed in slow motion from the scaffolding, and I gasped with the beauty and finesse of the final production. What a magnificent collaboration with Farrow & Ball.....250 years in the making! 💝
    Once again, simply spectacular. 👏👏👏

    "I'm going to cry." Felicity, I think there are more than a few of us equally in awe (as I awkwardly type through tears). My breath was taken away as each roll unfurled towards the floor; absolutely stunning. Your ability to embrace the many facets of the chateau's rich ambience and atmosphère is revealed in every episode.

    Just one persons point of view, but I really enjoy the segments on the technical parts of the restoration, like the roof. The structural elements like the roof and the exterior rehabilitation are fascinating. What is the plan for the windows and shutters? Would it be possible to do some more video segments inside the attic to see the structure in there? Well done, and thanks for posting, good luck in your continued efforts.

    •  Месяц назад +2

      We're thrilled you're enjoying our journey. We wanted our restoration to place history and heritage preservation at its heart. Bonjour Felicity and Tim, I love your stone mason's the facade is looking picture prefect, they truly are masters at their craft, definitely second to none. The roofers as well, the painstaking task at getting each tile to fit correctly, definitely an art to cutting, placing the holes in the correct spots and laying them, with an ancient tool of the trade. You wallpaper is beautiful, I love the four-color pallets you have chosen, I can't wait to see it on the walls. What a busy week, well done everyone. Love from N.Y.

    ☕️ I love the fact that the architect or builders of the chateau façade were as pragmatic as they were talented. A veneer texture is something we'd do now. So, so very cool to humanize these ghosts. I think that's what I'm feeling when I see your videos... the people are long gone, yet they are somehow present, too. I feel them. ❤
    When you show the maker marks of the previous roofing crew, from 1884, I wonder if you can still talk to the people who owned the place in 1984. If they are still living... I think I learned, sometime, that these roofs last about five generations in England. So they must have been unable to afford the roof in 1984. I'll bet that's a story too. So much life was lived there!

      Looks like there was some substantial work carried out in 1938-1939 too (looks like août 1939 to me, i.e. August, can't decipher the month before 1938).

    •  Месяц назад

      Yes, that's right. The last week of August 1939. The week before the outbreak of the Second World War.

    •  Месяц назад +1

      Yes, we are still in close contact with the de Rochequairie family who owned the chateau from 1893-2020. There were several phases of work on different sections of the roof over the generations.

    I would love an episode on how France decides which properties are 'listed' and to what level. Often it seems the highest listed properties sit and rot because it is so expensive to restore in that manner and forces owners into styles they may not like.

    • @laurentdavid2147
      @laurentdavid2147 Месяц назад +1

      Listed properties get state and regional subsidies as well as tax exemptions for the money spent by owners. Generally speaking properties get listed only if and when the owner ask for that, so there are no big issues. It is not always true because in some case the government makes "classement d'office" which means that it lists some properties without owner's consent, but it is rare. There are 2 levels of listing : "classement" and "inscription", "classement" being the highest level. Most owners like "classement", because it allows a good level of subsidies/tax-exemption. "Inscription" is more of an issue, because constrains are nearly the same and subsidies or tax-exemptions are much lower. Also, "classement" or "inscription" can make problems for neighbors, because all external works on buildings that can be seen while seeing a "classé" or "inscrit" building will need special approvals.

      @gingermonette7455 Месяц назад +1

      @@laurentdavid2147 Thank you! That was very helpful. I thought the gov't often made "classement d'office". Maybe it's the UK, I'm thinking about.

    • @flojolivet512
      @flojolivet512 Месяц назад +1

      Also, most listed properties are privately owned. The responsibility of maintenance is on the private owners who can apply for help from various government agencies. The reason why some historical buildings are abandoned it’s because of fighting between heirs, or unknown heirs or any other kind of problem connected with ownership of the property.

    • @laurentdavid2147
      @laurentdavid2147 Месяц назад +1

      @@flojolivet512 Also, you can see listed buildings belonging to people that don't maintain them and don't sell them either, while other people are interested in buying and repairing them, because the owners expect unrealistic prices. Generally they get reasonable just before those buildings crumble, but sometimes it is too late. French administration has some power to prevent inappropriate works on listed buildings, but very little power to enforce owners to do maintenance works if they don't feel it that way...

    I must admit I was a bit surprised at first by your choice regarding the green and red wall paper, but as soon as I looked at it more closely, it quickly came to my mind that it would really make this room feel special, really much stunning and different from the other rooms ; a feeling that suits perfectly the room as it is the only room that is configured like this in the plans, in front of the Grand Escalier, in contrast with all the bedrooms in each wings !
    Your architect has truly an awe-inspiring knowledge and capacity to recreate those XVIIIth century decors.
    I can’t wait to see where you will hang the other wall papers from the collection « the Purnon’s papers » !

    •  Месяц назад +1

      Thanks for your message. You're quite correct regarding the significance of the location of this room. Each room will obviously have its own look and feel, but this room, sitting in the central location at the top of the staircase has a special role to play. Thank you also for acknowledging the expertise and insight of our extraordinary architect. His knowledge of the 18th century aesthetic is quite profound and while we are not creating a museum we nevertheless walk humbly in the footsteps of the people who came before us. We want to honour the creative spirit that built and styled Purnon at the end of the 18th century.

It seems like no one wears masks even when you visit workshops. As a wood worker and refinisher who breathed in dust from the Sept 2001 I can tell you that without masks the damage to my lungs would have ended my woodworking career. Please mask up! You guys have a lot more dust to stir up and I want you both healthy to enjoy your masterpiece for years to come. Best! Mel
