Literally goose-bumps when the bust of Louis XV was placed on the already beautiful and spectacular roof! Such a moment! Not to mention the addition of Henry IV in his perch of old! A crowning experience (no pun intended) in the restoration! I have to add that watching it being done with the massive crane and available technologies, one wonders how it was originally done? Perhaps an ancient pully system of some sort? I will watch (for the third time LOL) to see if there was an answer given. So much going on and I am SO appreciative to be able to see this restore up and close and personal. THANK YOU! ♥ OMG That crane!!

I am curious whether posting your efforts to renovate the chateau on RUclips spurred the government to become involved. I remember your struggles as you single-handedly tried to catch the massive leaks in the roof with buckets and dug out the tunnels leading out of the dry moat by hand. Now you have armies of craftsmen swarming the building and a well-renowned architect talking about what a cultural treasure Purnon is. Don't get me wrong, I think it's incredible what they are doing. There is so much cultural history in Europe that is slowly sinking into the ground, the undertaking to restore it all is massive. I'm glad you found Purnon and are saving her and that so many people have rallied around to make it happen.

    •  3 месяца назад +17

The French Government (DRAC) has been by our side from the very beginning. In the weeks before we became the legal owners of the Chateau they met with us on site (which is virtually unprecedented) and said they would stand with us as we strived to save her. While it is true that we work tirelessly every day to save her (as you outline in your message) we have been strongly supported by an extraordinary architect, incredibly skilled artisans and, notably, by the French Government. Thanks for your message and for following our adventure.

What a wonderful balancing act! I kept thinking about all the weight that that stone façade must support, including the busts. Tim asks, "What do the busts have to do with the family who owned the château?" I thought, "Naturally, members of the family were elevated or gained prestige under the two reigns." Yay! Not far from what M. Didier made out at the end. And how good to see a member of the family on premises to learn with the rest of us. Great work, everybody!

While looking at how awesome the roof is, I noticed at 18:16 in the video, you can see a single slate broken on the roof behind the bust on the far right side of the roof (almost out of frame). Trivial but it’s a brand new (very expensive) roof

At long last! I have much anticipated what the busts would do to the overall appearance of the chateau. So unique. You really don’t see that on at least a lot of the chateaux I’ve seen being restored. One of those focal points of interest. If I didn’t already know, I’d point out that interesting shape that looked like a bust and ask what it was. I feel like there will be many visitors and onlookers who will ask just that!
It was also encouraging to get the story on the probable reason these two particular reigning monarchs were chosen to serve as busts for this magnificent chateau.

    •  3 месяца назад

Thanks for your message. Thankfully we have the elements of the originals now to display in our entrance. So people will see the busts on the roof summit as intended and the also people will be able to admire them up close in the chateau itself. The best of both worlds!

It's a question we ponder often here at Purnon. We'll cover some of the traditional construction methods in a future video. Thanks for your question.

Congratulations on getting to this stage! It's amazing to see. Sorry I know you have enough to worry about and work with but I'm wondering though do you have plans for or was there a lightening rod as part of the roof complex? Could, or are some of the orb like objects on the roof capable of being used as lightening rods? Have you discussed this with your architect?

    Dear Felicity and Tim,
As an Australian Veteran of 21 years service, I often reflect upon what Aussies have done for France, and I am damn proud that there are a couple of dedicated Aussies that have return to French soil to once again fight hard to defend and restore France's heritage.
My compliments to you both, and to the professionals and artisans who are assisting you in this epic tale.
    Yours sincerely
    Peter Thornton
    @ Canberra Australia

Hi Peter, thank you for your service. While our contribution to protecting France and its heritage pales into insignificance when compared to our veterans of past wars (so many of whom gave everything), we hope that our project plays a small part in cementing the incredible friendship that continues to exist between the people of France and Australia. Thank you for your message. We are thrilled that you're following our journey!

Qué trabajo más "monumental" (en todos los sentidos) One has to love that roof. Los reyes pueden estar bien contentos de cómo se les trata en la República de hoy. Eso sí: En Francia, sus cabezas siempre andan rodando por los suelos. Your videos are at a stratospheric level. Thanks for the effort. Sois maravillosos.

Simply amazing! Interesting that even today at the Chateau, min 14:35, the owners were drinking champaign while the workers were drinking beer. Clearly a choice made my the individual drinker but I wonder how many times in Purnon's past a major accomplishment played out just the same. Far less celebrating together I would imagine but the drinks probably matched the status of the person perfectly.

    •  3 месяца назад +1

Well, we were drinking Vouvray not champagne. Its a Loire Valley sparkling variety. But if you watch our chai roof restoration video you'll see us drinking beer with the team when the roof was completed. We're Australians - do you really think we have a problem drinking beer?!
