Checking kicks hurts. It hurts no matter how you do it, but here are some techniques that will either minimize the damage checking a kick does, or allow you to counter so that you don't have to check too many. There are lots of arguments about whether or not to flex the foot... let's keep that going haha.

@@erccool why I'm here.
.
Here's the answer about the toes: it's about the follow up after the check. Toes up better for closer range and immediate push kick return (often to jam opponents hip). Toes down for longer range and immediate kick or step-kick return. -- so the real answer is like in the video "it doesn't matter", however, depending on your style and range, there would be a preference. Different parts of Thailand will develop this on that basis.
Someone checked my roundhouse twice in a sparring match exactly like that. Fractured my ankle lmao
This dude is a beast! You can already tell.
Try searching “the low kick destroyer”. Sylvie von Duuglas-Ittu talks about a technique where you check the kick with a knee strike. Sounds painful!
Sounds informed all the way through.
Kyokushin has a thing where you lift the foot and hook an incoming kick, throw the opposite hand. It disrupts balance when you make a kick 'stick' to your checking leg and turn their hips so their chest straightens up to you. If someone's good at it you regret trying to kick them.
This is spot on! Checking kicks sucks but this is the way to do it. Keep your knee inside your elbow is a must but the rest is just what feels best for you. Again another real and honest insight into fight techniques which is why I love this channel 🙏💥
I always curl for a more stable block and to stop the kick sliding down and off the bottom of my leg. Interestingly I also seem to pick my leg up much more to the side than you do, reason in my mind it to meet the kick at a point perpendicular to the direction of movement :) nice video
I was always taught that you can get your toes broken with your foot pointed out instead of down. But yeah JUST BLOCK THE KICK.
And there are probably dudes that say they'll get broken pointed down... I don't think anybody knows.
Thanks

6.17 ''i am a very small person and i want to be closer''
Best video ever!
IMO the best way to check a kick is with a knee straight to the shin.
I don't think the angle of the foot matters for checking the kick at all, I don't flex my ankle in either direction.
I agree
“But guess what? That shit happens.”
Can someone link me to the "leg muscles" video?
*LEG MUSCLE*
I have no idea how this is even an issue. Too many people standing with their legs apart when they should be strait up and down like you don't even have a stance so you can lift either leg. You can't raise your leg in a staggered stance, and you'll be off balance when you do, checking a kick or not. This is your neutral and you switch into whatever stance you want to do whatever thing you're going to do in the split second it takes to do so.
" can't raise your leg in a staggered stance "
not so sure about this one, there have been many exceptional fighters using all kinds of stances
@@driver3899 but my comment fixed all of your problems yes? You'll understand if it did
@@unregisteredaccount6555
I dont really understand what you mean by your comments fixing all my problems
on a side note if you are standing straight up and down and don't have your feet apart as you suggest then I would say that's not a very athletic stance
Having a good base under your center of gravity is usually pretty important, especially in self defense where grappling is as much a thing to contend with as striking is
@@driver3899 the point is that it's not a static stance. It's your neutral. You change into whatever stance for whatever you decide to do in the split second it takes to do so. Until then you need said neutral to maintain your fighting measure and choose your distance and move around... in particularly laterally, as in that little shuffle drill you do around the mat at the start of class, and variations of it.
@@driver3899 also as it pertains to the video, people only even have this question because they are trying to spend the whole match in a staggered stance. You need to be on your toes / balls of your feet until YOU decide otherwise.
Your so good and have all the ideas you got a black eye lol

When someone tries to kick me, I intercept the leg and bite the calf. Instant fight ender.
Do you intercept it directly with your face instead of catching it with your hand? I believe taking it in the face shortens the time it takes your mouth to bite his calf

I always got taught to point the foot down, prevents broken toes from the kick being lower than expected. I suppose it’s preference each way has pros and cons
Pedro Guerra I’m assuming you are talking about a teep/push kick? I broke my big toe when my partner blocked the teep w their knee. 2nd month into training. I am super cautious of teeping ever since. But I know how to time them better now.
Pedro Guerra yeah I must admit I’ve never had any injuries from throwing a teep. Maybe throwing it straight from the ground with no chamber I don’t know but breaking your toes with a teep is pretty bizarre
@Pedro Guerra one incident is more than enough to worry about it.
True, foot down prevents breaks but stops you from flexing that muscle
@@iiJaydeex yeah teeps are my comfort strikes haha, i never feel like im going to get hurt when I throw them

Could you do a video on stretching? I know it's important, and a lot of people disregard it, wanted to know your thoughts
dipdop fakename If you aren’t stretching on your own multiple times a week already, a video isn’t gonna help you. If you want to improve your flexibility, strength, endurance, your consistency is much more important than what path you take.
Kwonkicker and Sensei Seth
My muay thai coach also shows us to aim your knee down twords the kick. I use this one alot especially against guys that like to go for the back leg sweep.
Regarding "which way foot" - I used to think "whatever" till i got hit in the foot flexed up... If it's pointed down and you'll get kicked in it it just hurts, if it's pointed up and you'll get kicked, that shit makes you not want to walk for a week. The toes huuuurt AF + the ankle has way more give to it and it feels like it's sprained.
JohnnyBit cant u just wall in closer or out of range?
@@dayman161172 There are other methods to deal with leg kick and Icy Mike shows many. Checking kicks are a way to "punish" the opponent for trying to kick. Range management is different thing.
Sounds like you checked with the smaller part of your shin or you’re not conditioned.
Can you make a video on what to do after you get underhooks? We’re always swimming for under hooks in class but sometimes I’m at a loss as to what to do when I get them. Thanks! This video answered so many questions I had!!
Do you watch Teach Me Grappling? I bet he has a good answer.
I teach to point the toes down because I don’t want to check a kick with my toes.
My thoughts exactly
This is booming again due to Weidman lmao
4:46 it does, when you flex your foot up your leg is a lot more rigid and doesn’t cave in, plus your foot catches their shin if it slips off because if their shin slips off then it will hit your supporting leg.
Old video this but... foot up foot down is no different.
My old coach say foot down .i asked why? He simply said "muay thai martial art. Foot down more beautiful. Like statue. Good art". Never forgot it.
I just love how he immitates what he thinks his subscribers sound like!
mike, talk about that "check kick wing chun shit" that one of your students used against you one year ago in this video:
"Conditioning, Composure and Strategy Tips |10 Minute Sparring Round"
"min 4:42"
That's not really a whole video... maybe.
Maybe...just maybe...if u see the kick coming..just step back and let him fly past..and then...either give them the finger..or burst in and punch. Just sayin'. I no longer have normal shins after checking too many..I no longer wish to check if I dont have to. #mooncrater
Good point, the actual best low kick counter is don't get kicked
That was my tactics in the UFC, out of range until you want to smash
Anyone here after Blachowicz slowed down Adesanya by checking those leg kicks?
i relax and let the foot dangle so the tendons aren't smacked against the anvil while under load
also, to disrespect moar you teep the kick itself :3
A technique popularized by Dieselnoi is bending your leg and checking with your knee/kneeing the shin. Not really that well known or widely taught among westerners. Really painful.
@@BootyBot wonderful tech and very practical, i use it (watched maybe too many times every video of him i could find to improve my knee game when i was a kid)
lacks the insulting factor, a teep to the thigh also might or not slide towards the other guys nuts
@@mindbreak666 yeah it's more effective because the knee is so much stronger than the shin so once it lands there is a very very high chance they'll stop throwing leg kicks. Only downside is practicing it in sparring could hurt your partner and it's hard to time right.
@@BootyBot well, shin guards are a thing, and the other guy isn"t supposed to throw full force anyway
there's also those foam noodle stick things so you can practice aim and timing without crippling people, put some pvc inside and have someone hit you with it :3
There was no need in porier to mouth off while a guy lays with a snapped leg av lost all respect for him, n the folk sayin he was winning all coz porier got a bit time on top
Yo, definitely take in on the muscle. Muscles inflammation stays 10 times shorter then bone inflammation( Periosterum inflammation to be exact) and is much much! f... painful that muscle's one. I had one in my twenties. And it was precisely because of this technique.
Mark Delagrotte says to flex your foot up. Its called the thai shin guard.
For me, it really doesn't matter how the foot turns, it still hurts.I once checked a kick with my bare shin while practicing and me and my partner both fall cause we both took the damege.
" There was no check" - Conor McGregor, 2021.
anyone here after Chris Weidman breaks his leg
One front kick block I learned (disclaimer, hard to nail only works if it's telegraphed usually) they bring the knee up but before they fire the kick you meet their ankle with yours. As they fire the kick you guide it away by extending your leg slightly to the side. If you do the disrespectful kick at the end to kick their leg further, it puts em at a disadvantage. You're already up ready to step in and they're turned away from you
"kick me!"
"well not that hard"
lmao. jk
Here after Alex checks Izzy's leg kicks.
Why are your heavy bags touching the ground?
Fists clenched, but with both pinkies from each hand pointed upwards. Optimal balance.
Will try and report back.
Thank you, Mike. I've watched a lot of martial arts stuff over the last couple years.. I really only practiced for a few years, and the way I was taught was "hurt and leave". I was taught self defense, not to stand and fight. Every time I watch one of your videos, I learn something new, and I really dig that, and it's the absolute KEY difference between what you put up and what most people do.
@hard2hurt , few thoughts of mine: 1 should not check it "bone on bone" at like a true 45 degree angle, rather just beside your bone at like a 40 degree angle (if you understand what im trying to get at). 2 checking toes up increases the likelihood of your toes getting broken should the kick be low like a calf kick, toes down safer for the checker's toes. 3 I like your point of not lifting high to check with top of shin, with that being said I think you can lift lower/less than you are in the video, a bit less of a lift (4-6" off ground) and opponent will be breaking their foot on your knee cap. Thanks for your video, let me know what you think of my 3 points.

Speaking as a senior instructor with the World Thaiboxing Association, you put your toes up, because broken ankles happen. You can walk on a broken toe, not on a broken ankle ;-)
That being said, it really shouldn't matter, since you are blocking with the top six inches of your shin, which is why it is called a "Khao Bung", or "Knee block".
I like to relax (not too much) the calfs when im checking, just like when i throw an elbow (my hands)
Me too
Same. Relaxed but rigid. My calf flexes just very slightly at impact but I can’t help it and it doesn’t bother me.
Here after the Trilogy 😂
To all those wondering, checking kicks shin to shin is actually what elite professionals do and is not an easy thing for beginners so take it easy lol.
Psalms 10:7

@5:55 You were gonna say "Kick me, BITCH!!!" ;D The way I've seen it explained by an Thai instructor is that with the checking leg you want to basically catch the kick and then you stomp it down so it puts force on the kicker where he can't pull the kick back naturally and he winds up stumbling forward into your awaiting shot. I would hazard a guess though that you DON'T want to allow give on that check because Muay Thai guys wind up and kick through, so you if you allow give he's gonna just kick you and sweep you in the same motion, don't want that.
at 2:45 his pinky was pointed in the wrong direction.
Dammit
Was doing a little amateur scrapping with a buddy. No headshots allowed "no mouth guards." And after a few rounds, my left leg had been hit enough that I switched to southpaw. He threw a right leg kick, and as I went to check my inside I got hit right under the kneecap. Couldn't walk for 15 minutes. Fun walk home.
Checking kicks is dumb. Your shin is fragile and will snap if you try this without padding. Just move your leg out of the way. This is only popular in muay thai because the guys barely weight 100 lbs and have no power behind their kicks.
I usually step on the shin as it rises...is that wrong....I'd rather block with the ball or heel of my foot than shin on shin ....not because of the pain ...but because the momentum you generate while pushing off a step check from the leg you can follow up with another strike using the momentum...
When?
@@hard2hurt when what?
@@hard2hurt when did i try this? (When) i went to the M.M.A gym i tried out....(when) do i check? As soon as i see the leg rising. (When) do you use the momentum to execute a follow up strike? It depends on the stance and position of the fighters involved.
@@hard2hurt one more thing @ 6:13 this is opposite to my main way i feel comfortable while preparing to engage except i prefer to use the ball or heel of my foot.
@@hard2hurt but since the foot is a shorter "sheild" than the shin...you have to be confident in your own reflexes and threshhold of pain. And over all understanding of kinetic and potential energy ...the momentum that is generated between objects...and use it correctly at the correct time.
Point the toes. It does matter. Not because you are using the foot for more shielding as you correctly pointed out, but because it gives a harder contraction of the hamstring. This hardens the knee against the bony part of the leg maximally and helps the hips flexors to stabilize the leg more strongly in order to use drive it into an opponent's leg. Pro fights have been ended just by noobsthat didn't know that and just kicked at their opponent "how it feels good"..... Because it turns out that kicking without damn near perfect hip near the END of the kick makes that move exponentially more damaging and painful to be blocked against properly. I mean it is bad for the hips and knee, doesn't do bone crushing damage that every last knee is supposed to do, and hurts like hell when it gets blocked. I don't know why people still teach these techniques wrong lul.
The explanation I was taught years ago was foot up so that the foot creates a shelf. A downward chopping kick can run down the checking leg cut through due to leverage into the planted leg. I don’t know how valid it it but I’ve had several coaches preach it that way.
Thanks for this gem!
Beginners on leg kick checking point toes down. The correct way to check if pulling foot up so muscle covers the shin.. And yes.. If u get a pro fighter smashing in a hard low kick and u check it shin to shin.. Its hurts u just as much.. Hence that's why the foot pulled up let's the muscle asborb the impact.. K1 ref kakuda... Holds the world baseball bat's breaking record with round house shin kicks. He smashed 8 at once.. I trained with him and he pulls foot up when throwing his shin kicks so that the he doesn't smash his own shin when kicking through baseballs bat's
If you pull your toes upward during a kick check, the muscle on the front of your shin shortens and can help protect part of the shin bone from impact and thus pain, how is that not important? Unless you’ve gotten used to pointing your toes down. Or you’ve just kicked too many banana trees 🤣
I was always tought to intercept when you can and crowd the kick and take momentum off it by moving forward whenever possible but good advice overall main thing stop the kick folks with the upper shin
6:40 that absorbing thing isn't good for knees, surely? Maybe good variation to confuse them, if they are expecting a check.
have you ever seen anybody bring their knee down a little bit and turn it into the shin? so instead of them hitting the higher part of your shin they're actually hitting the rock hard spot of your knee.
hard2hurt Icy Mike why aren't you a cop anymore? Not related to this video, just curious. I read you got injured in a car accident or something, but just wondering if that's true or if there was another reason.
Bazooka Joe Valtellini says to point toes out when chucking leg kicks. I guess everyone has a different way of doing things.
when someone throws a kick at me I kick their shin with mine and it not only keeps my balance but also propels me toward my opponent who's most likely backing up, not to mention the pain you've caused your opponent. Have even wore ankle weights and wrist weights which improve speed and stamina
