The Best Kick for Beginners to Focus On in Kickboxing, MMA and Muay Thai

- The actual kicking in our kickboxing program is about 70-80% lead leg stuff. It is a very demanding pursuit, but if you can make your lead leg dangerous people will respect your space more and react to feints from it.
The limited edition gloves we are wearing are not out yet, but will be released soon at revgear.com/?a...

Question for Viewers: Your lead leg sucks. Go practice with it.
Dayum such great wisdom lol
Jeopardy type answer. What is the lead leg?
I shall
Yes it suck, happy birthday by the way
Affirmative
Happy birthday, coach! Agreed on the lead leg, especially with closed stance.
@hard2hurt are we birthday buddies?
Shane fazen up in here
Mike liking the pendulum kick and seth not liking it is the most backwards thing ever lol
@Schöner Albtraum niceee 😭😅
I would have expected seth to love that kick. Now i’m just like “wtf happened to cause this big of a mishap?!”
This feels like the martial arts version of breaking the magicians code.
Yeah Cliff is old school he doesn't believe in doing this.
@@hard2hurt please dont stop I need this lol
I am SO frickin' glad you addressed the left (or I guess less dominant for most) leg and its propensity to suck. You very lightly touched on the topic a couple videos ago, but this video drove it home. I just started incorporating leg work on my heavy bag. I feel like I can ax a human or large wild animal in half with my right (dominant). When I executed a kick with my left leg, I found it might not even be connected to my nervous system or brain AT ALL. I'm relieved to hear it sucks. Here's the plan; get a gnarly prosthetic left leg with spikes and jagged, bright Olight flashlights attached. You want to talk about "hard to hurt?!" Can't hurt a prosthetic, especially if you're blind.
Edit: Commented before end of video. Happy Birthday Icy Mike.
If I ever lose a limb best believe I'm gonna have weapons mounted on my prosthetic.
bit ironic that your tree trunks are the ones doing the chopping
nice
You just turned 40? I thought you were already in your mid 40's because Sensei Seth is in his late 30's.
Bro same!
Seth just looks young. Still has a baby face.
Seth is like 26
@@ryanliu494 That's what I thought but are you sure?
Hes 37
When I started karate, I got really good with my lead leg. Then I switched to Muay Thai and got caught up on focusing on the rear leg kick. It was only recently that I said screw it and went back to throwing my lead more.
Well, how's it going with it on sparring?
hahaha this is exactly what i did too! my lead is also stronger than my rear, much more flexible too 😅
why do people keep saying muay thai is rear leg focused. they value both equally. watch a buakaw fight and that man is all lead leg.
@@jeffismywaifu4093 Pretty good actually. My opponents are looking for the switch and if you do it right, you can throw the kick without them noticing.
@@yarinelmaliach5891 I definitely do both. There’s definitely a place for switches and i love a solid rear kick but I also like having the lead leg be a trick up my sleeve.
Ahh yes Training kicks with your sidekicks just for kicks
Nice! Instead of gloves he should have been promoting shoes… or cereal ;)
You know what, Mike is finally right about me. My lead kick is shit.
Especially round house kicks, I got damaged tight hips because of skating too stupidity. Lol
those 3 stairs are rough brother
@@0vers33r1 you know what's funny about that, I don't skate stairs often. I live in a pretty flat and stainless town. But I really like this triple three set at our college. They have the perfect amount of setup in between to do stupid things on.
Right next to them is a7 flat 7 that I've never hit. Too much stair for me.
Me in the beginning of the video: yeah mike can use that lead leg in sparring but I bet it's not super heavy on the bag.
Me later in the video watching mike really smack the bag with his lead leg with no step: shit
Yeah it is a shame I didn't get into this kick more until after I was done fighting. Cliff made his kickboxing career off of it and he was always dangerous in sparring with it so I wanted to be more like him and put a lot of time in on it.
@@hard2hurt well now I wanna be like you so I'll put more time into mine lol
For me, the power comes from quickly driving the left hip through the kick.
It's that Elvis hip movement that Mike always stops and has to show in like this awkward dad humor way. It's shifting your weight. You want something to hit hard, you put weight into it.
coming from Savate, that was my bread and butter. when i joined a MT gym, they thought it was some kind of sorcery
I've been doing savate for a few months. Hoo lee fuck it is so underrated.
@@weefunkster indeed! the emphasis on movement, the distance management, the focus on technical proficiency...
@@MadDogXami i have my first fight next month. I am going to do this mixup until it stops working then box and chasse bas non stop ;)

Ps. you should do a video examining walking sticks as self defense weapons.
Lol

Hidden swords on walking sticks
Oh man, 40. You're officially an old wise man
Cit Firas Zahabi
Yeah Mike, well what about (insert advanced technique here that is completely irrelevant coz the video its "for beginners") 😂
In all seriousness, happy birthday. Looking good for 40 💪
As a grappler getting into MMA (many many moons ago) I noticed Dan Henderson would use a left leg low kick into overhand right and even if he missed the overhand he was close enough to get chest contact and clinch. I found it effective as a shorter grappler to close the distance on a taller kickboxer type.
Right-handed but weirdly left-footed my whole life. Lead kicks are my bread and butter.
I'm the opposite. Southpaw with a strong right leg. Left handed, always used my right for free kicks in soccer. And it's true, people really do give you the cross all day when you hit them with a lead leg head kick.
I once lead leg kicked the head off a bull
Nice
@@RFG012 Thanks, since then many bigger mammals have been beheaded
Happy birthday dude!
Happy Birthday, Icy Mike!
also 10:13 scared me, man. Thought my phone was possessed or some shit, jesus
I'm glad I'm not the only one lol
That’s the power of the new gloves!
I had told my google assistant something and I kid you not, at the same time, I heard the noise
Happy 40th yo !
Im right handed and left foot dominant so the right hand to lead left kick has always felt like a cheat code for me.
dude same! except for me my hands are equally good
@@arandompersonlol1202 Yeah I'm fairly ambidextrous as well. I wonder if it comes with the territory because I've never met someone else who's like that.
I so envy you lol
Happy birthday, Mike! Thanks for keeping us company during quarantine
"Its a f..ing leg" made my day. :)
Am I the only one who immediatly thought, "Don't let your gloves drop."?
And he falls over every time he throws the left kick. In Thailand they would say "No stumble! No stumble!"
@@Leadfoot_P71 It was a play on words. Because the new gloves are going to "drop". Do you get it?
Dude. Happy birthday 🍻🍻🍻
Happy birthday homie
My lead leg doesnt suck. It seems to be a southpaw thing for alot of people. I agree with this totally. The lead leg controls alot of the fight
Old age, and treachery, always beat youth and skill.
Treachery??
@@LizardMane trickery, attacks the opponent wasn't expecting. Like faking a head shot but attacking the body, that kind of thing. Shots that the opponent doesn't see coming hit harder because they don't block or brace for it. Mike Tyson was an expert, punches that seem to come out of nowhere. Great footwork like Mike had helps.
@@Explorshon123 ofc thank you
Always is such bullcrap. There is no always in anything. The young guy can be tricky too, he can be aware of the same tricks the old guy knows. Anything is possible.
Yooo, Icy Mike and my wee boy Cliff.
Hope both of you have a great day and happy birthday I guess. ❤🍻🔥
Happy Birthday 👌🏾
Funny how in sparring today I was just realizing this exact thing 😂
When you do TKD so most of your kicks are all side kicks and lead leg stuff XD
My right leg was my lead leg. Same in sword fighting my right leg was my lead leg. So it's odd getting used to left leg forwards.
I can confirm everything this man just said.
When I first joined a muay thai gym, years ago
We would practice Rear and switch kicks, almost solely
I watched some youtube muay thai oldschool technique videos, to get better
I dont remember exactly which one it was
But I do believe I got this front leg kicking idea from youtube
I just started practicing it over and over and over again, on the heavy bag
It felt weak, at first, it felt VERY weak, it still kinda does, compared to rear kicks
Except now I literally knock people down/out withem
With non-telegraphed front leg kicks, no switch
I can leadkick a fighter in front of me in the head from orthodox position
But that's not the good part, the good part is I can use it to knock a figher out with
Body shots, which hurts even if they block, which I know because they tell me so
That being said
Everyone in the gym believe that I have the strongest legs in there, which I dont.
Our trainer is a veteran muay thai and bjj competitor, his legs are stronger than mine for sure
See but even HE thinks that mine are stronger, which is insane to me, because It's not true
Shin bone conditioning probably has alot to do with it
I do that a lot more than anyone else in the gym
So when we kick each other for conditioning, they always quit first
If I had to give one tip: Set a goal, it'll help you persevere
I always wanted to be able to kick trees, nowadays I wanna kick iron.
In closing, I highly recommend working on your lead leg
It is like a secret weapon
It will suck no doubt, it will feel like shit for a long long time, but
persist, I promise you, it's worth it!! 🙏🏼 sawadee khap

Thank you so much Mike!
I have been Training Muay Thai for 3 weeks now and have been avoiding even looking at my lead leg. Now I spent 15 minutes throwing Lead leg kicks in my bedroom and they feel great! (Not that they are, but they feel good, haha)
I love what you are doing, especially for newcomers to fighting like myself.
Much love from Germany

LEFT KICK
KEEP THE RHYTHM UP
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Who else is orthodox but naturally kicks better with their left leg ☝🏼☝🏼☝🏼
Happy birthday Scrubby Shaolin Mike. Easily my favorite martial arts and shit talking channel on RUclips.
Great content. Saenchai uses this kick on a regular basis. There's a simple reason why most MMA and Muay Thai practitioners don't use it: it's Korean and "Korean kicks don't work." Also, your foundation being in traditional arts is why you're good at these kicks. If I may make a point, why not teach your students how to do switch kicks / knees instead of stepping forward to achieve the same goal? Unless you're following your opponent, switching is both quicker and sneakier. My coach teaches the cross-switch kick combo as a basic behind jab-roundhouse.
Also Alexander Volkonovski has excellent Lead leg kicks!
One millionth comment saying happy birthday Mike!
So many tips. Your channel should be called "fight tips" or something.
Hello White Belt Central
I have been asked by my client, Shane Fazen, to remind you that the name "fight tips" is off limits and has been claimed and tagged as protective material.
Therefore any further use of the name "fight tips" without consent from Shane Fazen will result in him "knocking down your door and turning you inside out from your rectum"- (Shane fazen 29/07/21, 1:54am).

Our national kickboxing team's program had 6 basic combos (based on what the Russians were doing to win) that everyone had to do a lot.
Combo #1: Jab, Cross, Lead leg round kick
Wanderie Silva in Pride taught the power of the lead leg.
use that front leg mawashi geri to setup other stuff....
Happy Birthday Icy Mike!
This reminds me of my taekwondo class 🤔 nice vid as always, keep rocking and happy birthday
Happy birthday man! Your channel is badass and I love your workout videos!
I have a student who is right handed but his left leg is better at kicking than his right. Perfect for sparring.
That's a dangerous combination!
Happy 40th man. You teach and make me laugh more than you know. Appreciate it brother.
Happy birthday Mike!
I'm more used to the left leg than the right, much faster and harder to counter, plus, the liver is right there :D
Pendulum kick is dumb
Happy birthday Icy Mike! ✊✊✊
2:08 that line was great
Happy birthday!
I know it’s not related to the video but what do you think to the crowbar for fighting? You can grapel with it, defend against punches damaging the puncher, hit and cut. Thoughts? Better than a hammer?
Too heavy for me.
@@hard2hurt yes the big ones are. Get a small one. I’ve got one no bigger than my lower arm. Also better for indoor.
One tip, don’t have the hook part out. Use the hook as a handle. Works better and lighter
You don’t look a day over 39!
Watching this like, "Yeah. My lead kick sucks ass..."
Him saying, "Right. Your lead hook also blows."
Damn. Yes. It does.
Happy birthday 🎈🎉🎂🎁
Mike, what are your thoughts on King of the Streets?
And happy birthday!
Happy birthday Mike! i wanted to thank you because of you and your older videos, my lead hook and lead kick are actually better than my other side and i feel really comfortable using them, this is mostly because you insisted on it being more difficult and that it required more training and practice to develop.
That is so awesome to hear.
@@hard2hurt I think the praise is deserved after all your hard work, what you have been teaching has helped me a lot to improve as a martial artist and to have fun too!
Kick that like button
I don't fight Orthodox, but at the very start, I always stand orthodox so I can use my left leg as my lead. Mike is right when he says it surprises people. I need to practice with my right leg for real though... My right leg is trash unless it's a side kick and we all know about those.
Happy birthday old guy
I love front leg kicks
I also like the lead kick when exiting close or clinch range. From clinch range just take one step back with the rear leg and lean onto it as you throw the lead leg head kick. People just aren’t expecting it.
bruh I'm right hand dominant so I take an orthodox stance but feel so much better kicking with my lead leg
Happy birthday Mike
I agree I started out kicking with my lead leg just because it was faster and I’m keeping my head pretty far back when I kick. (6’5 and got some long ass legs)
Mike's favorite combo is coincidentally my go to combo in ufc 4 lmao
Good info regarding the lead leg! I would agree that this is helpful for damage over time and combos, which is underutilized🤘
I will remember to train my lead leg more!
Happy birthday sir .
Da entire time, I had "Superfoot" Wallace on da brain, watching dis... In his fights, all he used was his lead left leg.
I'm right handed, left footed and though my right eye Is the dominant defolt I can shift to left eye dominance. I'm cross wired as all hell. Have you ever met somebody like that or should I go to a neurologist asap? Jk I don't need a Dr to tell me im messed up.
It’s your birthday? Happy birthday man! Mine is literally tommorow so I guess you won the race.
dude... thank you... i just realized i was content with my lead leg but bcs i was practicing both, orthodox and southpaw,.... and in southpaw my lead leg is good,... in orthodox... is... like a feet of target.... i hate it so... yeah... practice.
Nice! I've bee doing the lead leg to cross (or overhand) for a while now. Definitely a more intermediate combo though as the lead kick gets higher, as for it to be fast you need to have the mobility/flexibility to keep your body as upright as possible.
Any boxers here...
Don't pull as they kick, press forward and punch with the kick.
They're off balance and they now need a ground game 🤷
Very helpful tips as always, Happy Birthday IcyMike!
My lead leg absolutely sucks. I've already had to have ACL reconstruction surgery thanks to highschool football. Because of that I've noticed I have to force myself to kick harder than 50%. My good leg I just naturally kick with most of my power.
It's really funny how to current meta of mma, is exploiting the holes in the raw fundamentals of mma
honestly, I don't like the switch. It feels inefficient. I've been doing it because that's how they say it's supposed to be done.
i'm a southpaw and just switching up (lead kick, 2-1) and (1-2, lead kick) repeatedly is such a powerful tool in sparring lol
Happy birthday icy Mike ...we share the same birthday! Congratulations wishing you a great year ahead! Thanks for all the videos!
LMAO " This guy is like a lead leg master." This is true bro. I worked a lot of lead leg because of a tear. (It was weird but I just couldn't pivot and turn my hip)best thing to ever happen, in terms of my training. Got really comfortable throwing it, that's usually the issue with this kick.
It's funny, the first ever experience with kickboxing/Muay Thai was at a JKD concepts gym and for first several months they had the beginners focus on the lead round and lead push kick.
Icy Mike can you do a video on inside fighting techniques for southpaws?
Tuned in on a Birthday for a Birthday. Freakin' luv it. Nurgle Bless Our Constitution In The Kindest Of Ways
Happy belated birthday bud! On the next video: The best kick for masters! Flying spin kick 🤔
I did karate for years, was always taught in orthodox despite being left-handed. As a result, my left leg is far more coordinated than my right. I can kick to the head any time I'd like, no step required. People in my kickboxing/Muay Thai gym always tell me how confusing it is. A negative result of that, though, is that both my right leg and right hand are pretty much worthless.
I've just started muay thai but been trying to practice both my legs
Thanks again. I actually prefer the lead leg kick for quickness. Yes, and that bait motion! There's not a gym near me to actually train these techniques with humans, so I have no evidence that my lead kicks actually hurt and it is refreshing to hear you confirm that they likely are effective. I use that cheap step to gain space, but I think it's really the pendulum kick you show next. In case of this, I think it's important to point out (as far as the knee) that you are lifting your heal and are on your toes, which allows a little give in the twist/turn motion. A planted foot requires a very mobile ankle to spare the knee. Gonna go work that cross/lead kick combo now. ✌
Easy way to explain this the left hook and the jab. People naturally have decent straights but their jab and lead hooks are absolute trash.
People try to muscle the hook and the jab when they just need to let them fly with little telegraph. People also naturally resist the motion of trying to throw a punch forward but having to throw their weight onto their back foot. It's so unnatural that you throw a jab by slightly twitching your hips and not moving forward at all. The hook is even worse, you not only don't move forward, you actually move backwards.
The lead leg kick functions almost exactly like the lead hook. You throw your weight back and spin the hoops to almost try and hit your opponent from behind to drag them into you. Heck, when I'm tired and need to throw more lead leg kicks, I start missing a hook on purpose so my leg flies up with the momentum of the hook.
What I noticed from watching girls in sparring and guys. Instinctively the girls are always lead foot kicks n the guys are read foot kicking usually.
6.13 this is the big secret.. commercial pops in...:/
This is what you call a good cliff hanger 🤣
