Bro, kwonkicker was the first fighting RUclips channel I ever got into, way back in the day. Now bcuz of him, I watch everyone in this circle. Good memories 😎
When everyone’s eyes lit up when Gabriel said “my backfist setup is a defensive setup not offensive” was awesome. Of course Mike returned the favor by taking advantage of positions that people just concede in true RKM fashion
I once did it orthodox vs orthodox (kicked with my back leg) span so much I hit the back of his front leg with my heel... well, he wasn't very happy about it, it was weird tho, I was strangely close to his powerhand and I have pretty long legs so that's probably why I reached all the way there to his front leg with it

That’s the difference between us mortals and an elite level competitor. Whatever he teaches has worked for him at the absolute pinnacle of combat sports
@@hard2hurt Why though? Do you have a video on it? I feel like the backfist recruits more of my back/shoulder muscles and I throw it with more force so I don't know why you and Gabriel don't like it
Only thing I can think of that is better with the back fist is elbow position if you miss. As a kid throwing them like an idiot against a bag I managed to hyper extend my own elbow when the bag swung forward. With the backfist you just bounce off. End result is I would get more speed off the backfist because I was gun shy about throwing the hammer fist
I've never been more enthusiastic about MA videos, this format is a fantastic idea! Super interesting to see so many different approaches all at the same time. But I am sad no one represented jumping reverse side kick, it never gets the love it deserves. :(
Shane: I used this spinning attack once in competition and missed. Gabe: I used this spinning attack to knock down one of the most evasive fighters in history ☠️
I really enjoyed the boxers ability to come up with a spin move that was able to go along with the discussion and offer such a different perspective on what a spin is and could be used for in a fight. Very cool move man. Everyone else also had really good input
Best one is a tornado kick off of a missed or a ‘fake’ round kick. A lot of guys (especially Thai guys) will let you fully spin around with a missed round kick. Plant and Jump and you can cover height and/or distance
We call Icy Mike's kick the dragon tail. My son has almost killed me a couple times with it. Super sneaky cuz the person throwing it just disappears if your in any type of shell then you eat a heel while trying to find them. Never thought of using from a dirty boxing position. Great stuff.
Funny how Mike's kick is basically the famous capoeira spinning heel called: "meialua de compasso". Slightly different setup, but basically the same mechanics.
I see Mike's scorpion kick in high level olympic taekwondo sparring a lot, where it counts as a spinning kick to the head and gets a load of points, even if you just tap with the toes
Sensei Seth's setup was something Conor McGregor did a lot in his best run, he pressured people to the cage, naturally they avoided going to his left and he spun kicked to get them escaping to his right
Thai white fighter with one arm no one takes easy about does more with that one arm more then four my aunts do cooking combined! limitations show true potential like music almost less is more

Who could have anticipated that the pure boxer would have the best technique of the bunch? Props to Jared! Shane's was classic too. And "dreamkiller" is a great name.
My first karate sensai landed Icy Mike’s favorite, back in the 70’s. It’s on film. The Fighting Black Kings documentary. His name is Frank Clark. He lands it at 42:34 minutes

That's got to be borderline illegal in a sporting context. Funny both high level competitors showed "banned" techniques they're so good at using that no one notices it.
I like the spinning back hammer fist. I saw a fight recently where the fighter was knocked out with a backfist while they were in a boxing exchange. His left hook slid across the other fighter's forearms and as the first fighter moved his guard to retaliate the second fighter kept turning and caught him in the temple to KO. It was badass.
Mike I absolutely love your setup! Watching your channel has got me really enthusiastic about dirty boxing/boxing in the clinch, but since I also have a karate background, my kicks have been way better than my hands..... absolutely stealing this for class tomorrow!
My two favorites: 1. Lead leg side kick into spinning back kick. As soon as the lead leg connects, just drop it straight to the floor without rechambering and already have the foot pivoted in midair for the back kick. 2. Oblique kick or front kick followed by a spinning wheel kick. Rechamber the front kick as fast as possible and go straight into the heel kick. If the first kick connected, the opponent/target should still be exactly in range for the heel kick to land.
As a guy w/ a TKD base I have a few cool things I'd like to share with the class that I've found work decently in kickboxing and MMA at least in sparing. The first one works great against lead-leg heavy fighters that like to shell up tight and rear-leg heavy, light lead-leg Thai fighters. It's the most simple, probably the most well-known of the 3 I'll share in that if you watch spin kick KO compilations you might see it a time or 2. You throw a rear leg low kick, usually a light one, then when you retract the kick you use that recoiling momentum to turn your body and point your standing heel at the target, put the kicking leg down, and push straight off it into your spin kick with the same leg, attacking from the other side. So, 2 kicks from the same leg hitting opposite sides very quickly while you stay in exactly the same spot. It's one of those moments you don't expect to get hit and I find ppl just tend to take a breath and relax when they get hit with a single low kick and nothing after, especially if you condition them to that a few times. The second one is inspired by yours Mike cos it's from the same loose clinch/ should to chest position. It's one from TKD competitor that I've found works when directly brought into kickboxing without any mods but not as much in MT and barely ever in MMA. That's the switching, jump back kick from the clinch. By "Switching" I mean the footwork you see in TKD or Karate where you jump very low off the ground and basically glide your feet so they swap places. Now, this is applied to the jump back kick by rather than jumping high into the air, just simultaneously putting your front foot where your back foot was and bringing your back foot up into the back kick. And that works well when combined with a little shoulder bump McGregor style to the chest to create a little gap. It's a cool way to land a hard back kick from super close range but in MMA I usually get grappled before I can do it unless the person is a pure striker. Lastly is the hardest to do but super cool when it works and is something I think is pretty unique to TKD cos I've not seen it done anywhere else, it's also a bit like what Gabriel was saying about spinning defensively, and that's spinning backward. You see it in TKD as a way to not get scored on but I've found some success against infighters that like to really get in your face. Spinning backward is like spinning forward in that you show your back to your opponent for a moment, just rather than stepping your rear leg in front, you step your front leg behind. By spinning backward you create distance and you can THEN throw your spin kick, so not at the same time as you do spinning forward. Similar to move 1 as soon as your none pivot foot hits the ground and you're back in stance, push straight off that leg into a roundhouse, or a back kick or whatever. It also works with the spin hammer fist which you can throw as you spin backward with the rear arm. The way I use this is when I have someone who keeps getting in close and likes to fill the gap after you hit them. I'll blast them with a big cross to get them off me for a sec, then as I retract the cross I use that momentum again to carry on going and spin backward to create space that I quickly fill with a spinning attack when they crash forward into it to get me. When you spin backward you essentially just take a whole step back so you get a lot of room but timing this can be tricky and I don't think to do it very often. TBH usually it just happens when I'm getting overwhelmed like I'm turning my back in panic and then I've back kicked you. It comes in a way you just don't expect or ever really see so it's pretty cool and another defensive way to spin kick. I wish video responses were still a thing as it would probably be easier to explain if I could show you.
I've always thought of spinning attacks of working best with defensive techniques...but you guys have convinced me that offensive spinning attacks are also not only viable, but can work well. Thanks!
Awesome! Thank you so much for your content. Its one of my highlights during the week trying some things of them out in gymclass. My favorit of the showed ones was Kevin s, because of no one awaits a spinning kick to inside thigh. nice weekend, and all the best from germany
I like having the spinning hook kick and spinning back kick start with the same chamber because people can really punish an open hook kick if they get close, so having the back kick set up that allows you to still kick them if they try to enter into the hook but also allowing you to open the kick in the end into a hook in case they move back. On Seth's kick. I love the idea of countering the kick with the spin, but there's the risk of getting kicked in the back, which might be very damaging or not at all, depending on where exactly it hits.
I'm very happy that at 14 the channels I watched cause they did senzu beans in real life and some fight stuff or talked about self defence. Turned out to be good choices
I've forgotten that scorpion kick existed; it's such a utilizable kick. Thanks, I will add that amazing kick to my repertoire, it's gonna be so useful.
Spinning twisting kick is definitely my favorite, lead roundhouse to the inner thigh, then "miss", and spin around to throw the twisting kick to the liver or head
sometimes if someone redirects your kick and makes you stumble past them you are half blinded and can do like a wild rat spin and hop away at same time, with a backfist thrown in in case they are chasing you. Desperate panic move. But some of that Rat Kung Fu stuff even saves rats from cats.
4:40 THANK YOU! exactly! the effing backfist is useless. its a huge danger to your hand (breaking metacarpals) and even shoulder. hammerfist is safer, better, and if the opponent moves inside it he still eats the ulna instead of the meaty part.
I liked what we sometimes did in training: Turn away from the opponent, hold your heads on your head, bend down, and make a show of being afraid. Of course, you do that when they charge, so that it doesn’t give away that you have a plan, but so that it looks involuntarily. Then we step away and raise the leg that is staying closer to the charging opponent. More often than not, the heel then just goes up straight to their head. It’s a trick you cannot do very often, of course. But in the end, everything in fighting is somehow connected to do the right thing at the right time. Ah, btw: I’m doing a Mantis Kung-Fu style.
Scorpion kick isn't really a technique in Taekwondo but due to the rules (WT) for clinching a few years ago they became really common until the rules changed, I remember it kind of blowing my mind, that just isn't where you expect a foot to come from (and this is Taekwondo where your feet go everywhere). Weird seeing it outside of that really spesific context.
Yeah they can clinch and trip and hip toss but as you cannot stall or grip fight it's pretty pointless (kinda like in point karate too now that I think about it)
@@ksodplsfiel1405 yes and no, nothing like an "real" clinch. You can't grab and round punches don't score, at the time you also couldn't push (sort of, that was during the transition to where we can now push) so you would often get the two fighters just standing pressed up against eachother too close to land anything, that is except weird stuff like scorpion kicks (and what are now called "monkey kicks" which is basically just reaching your foot up an patting them on the back/side/head monkey kicks suck to watch and are just an exploit of the system wich drove a rules change).
You know what hing these collaborative events is like watching an avengers team up movie. Its going to feel a little flat when you go back to your solo movies.
@@hard2hurt hahaha. That's me told. Seriously you content is amazing. Thanks for the years of hard graft both on the mat and on the camera. You make both look easy.
Verga's move would actually be good for sanda cuz you can hit with the cuff of your gloves and get away with getting a close spin on your opponent. Imma try to use that one. Also really like Kevin's move, imma see if I can use that too 😏

Weird seeing it outside of that really spesific context.
you guys have a clinch ?
Only to a casual.
Also really like Kevin's move, imma see if I can use that too 😏
He fought a lot of top level sanda guys back in the day, it’s all battle tested
İ can't believe he is not that kevin lee. Thanks for mentioning
God damn it Mike, you reinvented another kung fu move. I've heard it called the "purple helmet kick" for some reason and I've only seen like one dude who can use it effectively. And here you are as a non kung fu guy with a perfect tutorial.
Purple helmet huh?
@@hard2hurt yeah I have no clue why it's called that either
Spin to win used to work way better till they added in the time limit.
My favourite "Spinning Around" is by Australian singer Kylie Minogue..
All my favorite dudes in one place. You need Tom Yankello here and it’s perfect. Like the fkn Avengers. 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
