Good topic on the realities of being a fishing pro. People need to realize. what is required before you even leave the dock. We see the big cheques on the stage but they don't show you what it takes to get there or keep your home and family going.

You're hitting on life lessons that anyone can apply to whatever they are doing in their lives. I run my own business and your message about beating yourself up hit home. Thanks for the content!

Good video, David. Thanks a lot for making this series. I'm an old, weekend, club level tournament , hack, so there isn't a chance of me ever being a pro, but I still enjoy watching the videos and being around the young kids who are trying to make it. Having that elusive, nebulous, hard-to-define "IT" factor is difficult, but I think it boils down to hard work, sacrifice, and a competitive fire, and having the mind set of every cast being the one that can turn it around, and IMO, these are among the keys to professional success, at least as far as being a TRUE "tournament pro" at the top levels. From what I've seen from the kids (not ALL, BUT many/most) is that when the going gets tough, they get GONE, and spin out. Having been in the boat with a number of ACTUAL pros, more than anything else I've noted among all of them, is that they really believe (even after they've been grinding for hours without so much as one bite) that the next cast will be the one they catch a fish on. They have that attitude on every cast. They have it in the morning, the afternoon, and the last cast before they have to go to the weigh in.
From the youth, more than anything, I fear its just a generational thing where the "everyone gets a trophy" mentality is rampant. This is even sadder considering that many/most from this generation have had every break possible. These kids usually have dads/relatives that had them into fishing since they were toddlers. They've grown up with information that is unfathomable to my generation, where most all we had was the monthly "Bassmaster Magazine", and the like, which were really mostly paid advertising. The TV shows we watched were "canned" with no such thing as a live tournament you could watch on TV. Plus, they have grown up in club, local, regional tournaments for kids, plus High School, college and now, even Jr. High bass clubs. Also, RUclips, the internet, bass fishing forums, etc, etc. This is made even worse by the fact that the vast majority of them are EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT sticks. They know more about bass fishing at 15-20 than I do at nearly 60. So, to me, they should (and to a small extent have, I suppose) dominate every tournament organization, but the thing they lack is "Ganas", which in Spanish equates to "You Win", or DESIRE. They hit a "bump in the road" and they fall apart and spin out completely. Obviously, there are a number of notable exceptions, but with this age group, I think its far more often, the RULE than the exception.
There are also a number of 'pros' who couldn't even place in a decent sized regional tournament, much less at the elite national level, BUT never the less, they are there. I'm sure you know the type I'm referring to. Those who are "independently" wealthy (rich businessmen types, those who have a rich wife and/or family, etc), who have the monetary means to "buy" their way in. Sadly, as the old saying goes, money talks and BS walks. I've never seen a tournament organization that failed to take their money/checks and let them fish in the elite level tournaments, regardless of the quality of their skill sets. Has to be frustrating for those guys who are having to grind it out and don't have a "daddy-deep-pockets" to buy their way in. A sub-set of this type are those that are some type of "fishing business owners", be it tackle, rods, lures, etc. They are in the elite tournaments just to pimp product and their tournament "success" is way secondary to being seen and advertising their product. Again, there are a couple of exceptions that are really competitive and want to win, but many/most are just there to advertise and make contacts.
So, in conclusion of my long diatribe, in future videos, could you address some of these points ??? I think it would be both helpful and informative, especially to the young up and comers, but also to the average fan (who are the REAL driver of this sport) as well. Obviously, you don't have to name names, but just address the "types" and highlight that they are out there and to get YOUR thoughts on it.
    Thanks, David.

And have the most fun. And that 2K figure is spot on. Im signed up for the Toyota central division this year as a back seater. And I budgeted for exactly that amount for each one. I know this is an older video, however this is still relevant. You forgot to add in taxes on those winnings. So its even less than $3,000.00 you keep.
On the subject of taxes, do you have to pay taxes for the state the tournament is in, like other pro sports people do when they have a game in another state, thats not their home state? What if the lake crosses state lines, hows that work as well?
Does your winnings fall under the windfall tax category like the lottery and you lose x amount off the top or do you simply pay taxes like any other business, paying quarterly?
