Disgaea being the people who always touch each other is perfect with how much those games reference other entries.
They're kinda connected no with Laharl in almost every entry

Putting Baten Kaitos on the card playing kid was a truly inspired move.
That table should have had Lost Kingdoms 1&2 and Phantasy Star Online Episode III. If I had a nickel for each time a GameCube JRPG had a card based battle system I'd have 5 nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's crazy that happened 5 times.

Even though i started off from persona, im not gonna deny that SMT is a lot lower in popularity and needs the spotlight. It's kinda sad that the original series got overshadowed though. But also pretty funny too. Imagine getting beaten by your spinoff! Well, not really hard to when it already happened but you get what i mean. It's insanely unlucky.

This makes both Persona and SMT spin offs of the book. People just call SMT "the original" and created this whole confusion because the stupid localization team of the Persona games for some reason decided to release them as "Shin Megami Tensei: Persona" on the west, when in Japan it was "Megami Ibunroku Persona" or just "Persona". This is what caused the misconception that Persona is a spin off of SMT. One was never a spin off of the other.
In short: Perona isn't a spin off of SMT. Both SMT and Persona are different spin offs of Digital Devil Story.
Regarding the popularity. SMT was never mainstream, not even in Japan. It never got close to big names like Final Fantasy. And that's because it's been a nieche series for the start, even before Persona was ever a thing. SMT is very difficult to get into for new players and it's themes are pretty damn controversial with their relentless criticism of organized religion and mocking of political ideologies, not to mention the, admittedelly, really edgy dark humor. In short, really not for everyone. It's no wonder that the first SMT game to have come to the west was the third one.
Persona, however, especially 3 to 5, was designed to appeal to the mainstream. The colorful visuals, very marketable characters, easily digestible but very well done and tightly written story, the slice of life aspect, the dating sim, multiple difficulty levels, flashy action. All in all, Persona was created with the intention of catering to the mainstream audience. (And there's nothing wrong with that btw).
So yep, Persona did take SMT's place as ATLUS' most profitable IP (Yes, they are different IP's). But that was kinda their intention from the start, and it wasn't a spin off that outshone the main series because, as explained, it's not a spin off of SMT. Just wanted to clear up some common misconceptions people have regarding this subject.

Theta Beta Gamma I actually wanna ask the same, I can’t read or identify the dorks table- and the games look super interesting. I was able to read Valkyrie Profile, Golden Sun and Baten Kaito but the other two, I can’t read- If you can cite those two, I’d love to know more about those games ^^
Rose Clementine It’s hard to read because some are the back cover since the characters are faced from behind. But the other two at the dork’s table are Star Ocean: First Departure (PSP remake) and Shining Force III (Sega Saturn). Cheers!

As an SMT fan, I don’t even hate the Persona franchise nor the people who play the games. Because I understand why people like Persona more. But if I had to say, I hate the people who only play Persona 5 and start being biased saying that “this is the best RPG of all time”
I hate being a die hard persona 2 duology fan.
We had the best characters, the best story, a fun rumor mechanic and we were comndemned to see our world crumble as they turned our beloved dark world building into anime clichés : the game.
So we're just like Tatsuya in that regard, doomed to suffer forever.

@@masonwalsh3546 Nope, far from it. However, I highly suggest playing SMTV Vengeance since ever it has a good way of bringing in newcomers but also gives challenging content too. I personally love Nocturne and SMT4

Yep, only Strange Journey and Nocturne count, Raidou is part of Devil Summoner and Digital Devil Saga is it's own series.
They are still part of the Megaten multifranchise.(SMT is the mainline;Megaten includes DDS,Devil Survivor,Devil Summoner,Persona,Raidou Kuzunoha,Majin Tensei,Last Bible and probably many more obscure series that I didn’t listed and the mainline SMT.)

I want to try P1 and 2 at some point but the PS1-era gameplay and the concept of not really having social links worries me. I love the series and id just rather not expose myself to an experience that might taint my personal view of the franchise

@@DarknessDpa Yeah, but Conception 2 wasn't all lewd either. There were plenty of nice little side events that were fun, wholesome or just straight up fucked up (the Ellie subplot). Plus, it had Alec who is still one of my personal favorite rival characters in gaming.

I think Stella Glow is not that fanservice heavy honestly.
I mean, yeah it's not as bad as a lot of other games I could have put there (probably should have put dungeon travelers 2), but when I was putting this together I just kinda put stuff off the top of my head. And well, the bikini under-fishnet bodysuit wearing ninja with a bag on her head just never... seems... to leave... my mind...

Honestly Im just glad to see Stella Glow here, as one of the most recent RPGs (and last from that company) from an underrated standpoint on this list. The story was kinda generic but the world and character made up for it. The OST was always amazing.
Love Conception but damn the RPG aspects seemed to be an afterthought to the whole StarChildren/Dating SIM parts of the game.
It’s great that the President of the former (imageepoch) is doing well after being silent and leaving the company to go bankrupt. Made a new company under mikage LLC. Criminal girls btw seems to be getting a new console entry to coincide with the mobile version. And they have another project underway, “99girls bulls eye” there’s actually an official website for the game, only has illustrations of 3 of the female leads, and a synopsis of the story, along with a kickass music op so far..
Nothing else has been said about their projects, but hopefully these two games get revealed in some way. Stella glow is such an under appreciated game.

This is also true about Sega franchises in generall. Change Persona games into Sonic, Yakuza, Persona 3-5, Total War, and change SMT games into rest Sega franchises like Valkyria Chronicles, Jet Set Radio, Shenmue, Sakura Wars, Virtua Fighter, Shining, Panzer Dragoon, Phantasy Star Offline etc.
I just wanted to say that I like every franchise in this video.
