- The first time I saw the picture of Flynn smirking I went sheet white and gripped my chest. Don't bother trying to tell me what it's from, I can't be convinced it's real, i won't believe you that it's real.
Sorry this took forever, I couldn't figure out what I was trying to say in what would have been a whole 10 minute segment of the video. The title/thumbnail feel less relevant without the removed chunk but they're also funny and relevant to parts of the plot (that I didn't talk about).
I'll turn the hunk of the script I carved off into it's own video at some point.

5:00 to 5:10 is the funniest transition between different set pieces I have ever seen in my life. Just seeing Johnathan claim he's pinking out while the High Priest Animorphs out of his cone form is so smooth and so fast it's inexplicably hilarious. Thank you, this video is a blessing to me.
I wanted to pay my respects to the amount of foreshadowing your video has in it to things you'll talk about later in the video. Upon rewatching it for the 10th time, I discovered just how much you laid out hints for. Truly a masterful video, I'm gonna pink out for hours watching this.

I find it odd how people can consider the point that Johnathan and Walter got killed off as anything else tbh. Yeah there's a tiny bit of leeway to say otherwise when concerning IV alone (even though it obviously does say they've essentially died), but IVA essentially solidifies that yes, they're dead.

Bro the plot twist when you go underground is still one of the coolest things ever to me. Like imagine going down a cave and find the thing the Joker hates the most.
I didnt get far into the game myself but decided to watch this anyways. That plot twist was indeed great! It really explains why a country from the 1500s have this oddly high tech gear from at least the 1990s
It's kinda the same thing they already had done with Etrian Odyssey, except it's at the beggining of the game instead of the end.

SMT 4 was my introduction to the smt series and I wish I could relive playing it for the first time cause it was such a good experience.

Same here, discovering Tokyo for the first time hits extra hard when you aren't aware of that being the setting for most of the games. I thought I was playing a medieval fantasy game.
Also my first smt. Went in completely blind and it blew my mind
Was my first SMT game too, i fell so envolved by the dark atmosphere,the great soundtrack and obviously the gameplay, the pressturn system was fresh air that improves the clasic system of rpg turn, allowing have better strategies.
Years later, I still find myself playing IV. (I tried III and wasn't into it, BUT I am more interested in I, II, and IF over III.)

Shin Megami Tensei IV is a JRPG built for the Citra Nightly Build 2104 on the Internet Archive.
I really enjoyed the "fish out of water" story, it's much easier for me to relate to a medieval knight completely lost in Tokyo than yet more Japanese high-schoolers doing yet more Japanese high-schooler things.
Also, on first playthrough, I thought the setting was going to be just "post-apocalypse fantasy" with all of the forgotten technology and modern references (don't forget Isabeau reading a manga which is totally "Rose of Versailles"). Something like the animated movie "Wizards". I totally wasn't expecting modern Tokyo still working fine 'underground', well, as fine as they can when the world had a nuclear war back in the '80s but they got magically trapped under a stone dome along with all the demons summoned with technology.
I also now prefer "mystic script" over "moon runes" for Japanese text now.
i think the reason why the demon death animations bug out on emulators is because of the 3D feature on the 3ds. Everybody stopped giving a shit about 3D view on the 3ds, but it seems like smt iv utilized it quite a lot, since the game's cutscenes and battles feature 2D images that are supposed to pop out more with the 3D turned on.
Actually kinda hyped to watch this haha, SMT IV is my favourite mainline megaten game and your editing style is never not fascinatingly hilarious

This game had such a good world. Its the only rpg where I wanted to listen to the npcs in everyroom talk. I even returned to the baker to see if he ever got anything after he introduced us to literature.
People are mentioning the follow up. Liked the story way less, but enjoyed being able to pick a npc helper. Navarre wound up being my main helper. I hate using turns to buff and he fit my playstyle.
The pass pro shop was supreme.
SMT4A is really interesting. I don't know if I'd necessarily call it good or even say I enjoyed it (there's also one really boneheaded thing in the late game that kind of puts me off it), but as an experiment in "SMT but it's a shonen", I think it's a worthwhile experience.

The music will always make SMT better. IV and now V have great sound direction that makes the combat which can be quite slow feel way faster. For IV this is especially true. The combat feels way faster and more action packed than it might be.
Edit: Smirking was definitely improved in Apocalypse, but I still don't hate it even in IV. Playing around the smirk is like a more evolved version of playing around the critical hit.
So story: I first played SMT IV around the spring of 2020 and the only reason I did so was because I had grown discontent with the newest Pokemon games at the time, For the rest of the year I was investing every bit of free time I had into the game and then some just because of how hard the game had me by the balls. I had previously played and enjoyed Nocturne but not to the degree I did IV, and especially to the point that it turned my discontent with Pokemon into borderline malignment. Ever since then this stupid 3ds Atlus rpg has become my gold standard for turn combat RPGs and I have a feeling it will be a long time before that changes.
Being dissatisfied with modern Pokemon is exactly how I got into this series too. You love to see it
The whole red pill plot point in this game is the joke that keeps on giving.
I want to say the red pills were based on a pre-existing conspiracy theory.
I got super annoyed with the emulation fucking up the transparency as well as the general crispness of some of the cutscenes so I did hack the 3ds and play it on real hardware and it makes a difference.
That said the emulated version has the capability to use a HD texture pack, it's kinda just waifu2x UI elements but it looks good actually
Man, it's unfortunate that SMT Apocalypse makes a great effort to balance smirk and instant death attacks. It also greatly improves the partner system by allowing you to choose who goes in to battle. I say "unfortunate" because it messes up pretty much everything else on both a character progression and story front.
I'd say if you or others want to replay SMT 4 do it before you start apocalypse because going back to it shortly afterwards is difficult

I'll have to look at it eventually. I thought it was strange there was 2 SMT4s going into this, but not ever using this game's setting again would have been a huge waste.

Ye apocalypse is really good with some of the best gameplay in the series but the story is really different and definitely not as good as other smt games, but it's still a good game that's unique and gives decent world building on the original SMT 4.

i actually played apocalypse first after personas 2,3,4 y 5; and then IVa and IV itself. it makes iv seem like a prequel which is kind of awesome and a unique way to experience the story

I think the reason Flynn can’t inherit passive skills is because he can get a bunch of them from equipment, so they’d be mostly redundant

Perfect timing, my friend jailbroke my 2DS and I've been binging some real Sheen Megoomi Tensay, like this game, and Strange Journey. Can't get the DLC working for the life of me but I've honestly enjoyed the game a lot more once I got to the twist. Can't stand medieval settings.

That last line is the icing on the cake. Honestly never considered this game being remade until others were talking about it. Just felt like the game is great enough. Graphics could use an update but I feel like any changes could negatively effect the tone and feel of the game.
Definitely my worry. There's obviously potential in a high end SMT IV remake but it feels so easy to just ruin it. Especially with Apocalypse and V coming after it and being awful in some of the departments IV excelled, I just don't think it's worth the risk.

Great video, I'm playing it right now on the 3DS (first run) and I love how it feels so different setting-wise, with a slightly modified gameplay and perfect soundtracks as always for me. It surprised me a lot after playing SMT 3 and 5, I'm getting different vibes from it.

IV is more SMT than Nocturne and V (which has sense since Nocturne was thought as something different and "unique" for the series) and that's why I like it more. I mean, the post apocalyptic world is more alive, having different people here and there struggling for different reasons, with different associations with different ideals, I know that's still present in III and kinda in V. But having (more) humans in place of just demons makes it more credible and immersive. I like the idea of the conflict between humankind and demons/gods in the same scenario too. It's one of the things that makes me appreciate this series, along with those cyberpunk aesthetics and concepts Nocturne and V lack. I'd really appreciate if they come back to that I, II and IV offer in a hypothetical SMT VI.
I still love III and V to death tho. SMT is still SMT. Gameplay, music, challenge, ideologies presentation are still top tier. My only issue with them is that dessertic approach to "the end of the world" and the kind of plot that comes with it. I don't dislike it I just prefer original SMT kind of world.
SMT 5 just makes me sad, they could have had great graphics and no bias on neutral route.

I didn't feel like getting very far, but I remember the english patch of SMT1 I played had an early NPC outright saying "don't let either side gain too much power", so I take it the series always wanted you to go Neutral.
@@VonFirflirch Yeah the first game says that and it's fine and all. Since that's what that game's neutral route literally does unlike future ones. Anyways this is something to heckin' lol at since SMTII decided to conclude with the interesting outlook that LAW is what things should lead to, at least in terms of that game's writing and storytelling and amount of content present per route (the game in the dev's words is quite literally law themed after all). Yes YHVH gets shafted in that route, no it's not the only law route in the series which does this. Actually most do kick him to the curb anyways. Even IV's does which makes it a better candidate for a replacement ending than Chaos if neutral wasn't an option lol. I'm digressing at this point kinda though.
Anyways to bring things back unfortunately with SMTIV onwards neutral essentially has just been treated as "How would our political/personal beliefs which go against the standard of attempts at altruism or full on anarchy would be BETTER than either of those?" So of course it's written as it's the intended path because it's what the devs want, but not in a good way since it quite literally comes at the expense of the quality of the other routes. Usually their answer is "HEY screw both sides trying to make new ground! Let's just go back to the old days because it's not like there's anything wrong with our society currently!" Which if you agree with this whole idea, then I'd certainly have to ask if you've been living under a rock for the past several decades. This in turn also leads to weird writing choices such as law being composed of fascist trying to push an altruistic regime and chaos as always being the "misunderstood" bad guys despite it literally being composed of warlords, tyrants, the actual devil etc. Who just want to wreak havoc under the false promise of "freedom."
On another note, if SMTV is any indication, neutral is SO hilariously fencesitting in a certain sense that it encourages the genocide and destruction of other races and cultures. With the whole grandiose "Let's just kill all the demons!" Plotpoint. Which in the franchise demons are fundamentally the culmination of the ideas of people, beliefs, emotions and cultures given physical form. IVA did something similar yes but the writing wasn't so bad to the point where everything was incredibly vague, and it was written as if the demons were instead becoming free from the views and ideas which put them together in the first place. Which has a different sound to it than just "genocide."
Ofc this is all because of V's rushed development and whatnot, (meanwhile IV's case of pandering to neutral had to do with it being a throwback at least so thats its excuse), so Atlus still has more chances in their bag obviously. But as with most other Atlus fans at this point I unfortunately obviously fear the worst for the future of it. That's due to multiple factors of course for everyone but for me at least the upcoming Soul Hackers 2 isn't one of them.

I'm not even done watching this but you got a ton of laughs out of me. Special shoutout to the Citra artefacting at the 12-minute mark. It's just assumed that 3DS games are played on Citra nowadays because the games are so expensive, the e-Shop is discontinued, and the console is discontinued too. But I dgress.

This was my gateway into SMT like a lot of people. Don't have much drive to revisit it nowadays, though, Apocalypse is pretty much this game and then some, provides some kind of Smirk fix, the game doesn't stop being tough two bosses in, you actually reach the level cap making every demon accessible to you unlike other SMT games I've played, etc.
That said, I really don't like how the endings in these games are barely any more satisfying than saving Peach in your average Mario game, which kind of stings after 80 hours of a harder than average RPG. Sometimes I wish they'd drop the alignement system and focus on having only one ending/path that's fully realised (not like there isn't often a route with more meat/attention anyway)

How did I only find this video a month ago, keep watching it over and over marveling at its genius. Gotta say, that last point about if we hear the main theme blasting sometime during a reveal I'll be right there with you. First time I'll say a straight port is all I need, as someone from the UK with a digital-only release I feel for anyone here who hasn't bought it now the eshop is gone. Even I'm worried my 3ds will fuck up one day and delete this game from my life.
