I really enjoyed the "fish out of water" story, it's much easier for me to relate to a medieval knight completely lost in Tokyo than yet more Japanese high-schoolers doing yet more Japanese high-schooler things.
Also, on first playthrough, I thought the setting was going to be just "post-apocalypse fantasy" with all of the forgotten technology and modern references (don't forget Isabeau reading a manga which is totally "Rose of Versailles"). Something like the animated movie "Wizards". I totally wasn't expecting modern Tokyo still working fine 'underground', well, as fine as they can when the world had a nuclear war back in the '80s but they got magically trapped under a stone dome along with all the demons summoned with technology. I also now prefer "mystic script" over "moon runes" for Japanese text now.

i think the reason why the demon death animations bug out on emulators is because of the 3D feature on the 3ds. Everybody stopped giving a shit about 3D view on the 3ds, but it seems like smt iv utilized it quite a lot, since the game's cutscenes and battles feature 2D images that are supposed to pop out more with the 3D turned on.

I don't know what's better: that you've summed up SMT4 to a T or the fucking editing. Peak Video ma man.
How did I only find this video a month ago, keep watching it over and over marveling at its genius. Gotta say, that last point about if we hear the main theme blasting sometime during a reveal I'll be right there with you. First time I'll say a straight port is all I need, as someone from the UK with a digital-only release I feel for anyone here who hasn't bought it now the eshop is gone. Even I'm worried my 3ds will fuck up one day and delete this game from my life.
Amazing video as always, my favorite part had to be the one where jack frost gets launched into the upper stratosphere and lands in the security camera footage dimension.
0:53 This edit killed me. If I ever try my hand at video editing, I know who to draw inspiration from x) This was my gateway into SMT like a lot of people. Don't have much drive to revisit it nowadays, though, Apocalypse is pretty much this game and then some, provides some kind of Smirk fix, the game doesn't stop being tough two bosses in, you actually reach the level cap making every demon accessible to you unlike other SMT games I've played, etc. That said, I really don't like how the endings in these games are barely any more satisfying than saving Peach in your average Mario game, which kind of stings after 80 hours of a harder than average RPG. Sometimes I wish they'd drop the alignement system and focus on having only one ending/path that's fully realised (not like there isn't often a route with more meat/attention anyway)
Another fucking banger video. I'm so glad you covered SMT IV as its one of my favorite 3DS games of all time and what I would consider an absolute staple for anyone who owns a 3DS or is into the SMT/Persona franchise in general.
IV is more SMT than Nocturne and V (which has sense since Nocturne was thought as something different and "unique" for the series) and that's why I like it more. I mean, the post apocalyptic world is more alive, having different people here and there struggling for different reasons, with different associations with different ideals, I know that's still present in III and kinda in V. But having (more) humans in place of just demons makes it more credible and immersive. I like the idea of the conflict between humankind and demons/gods in the same scenario too. It's one of the things that makes me appreciate this series, along with those cyberpunk aesthetics and concepts Nocturne and V lack. I'd really appreciate if they come back to that I, II and IV offer in a hypothetical SMT VI. I still love III and V to death tho. SMT is still SMT. Gameplay, music, challenge, ideologies presentation are still top tier. My only issue with them is that dessertic approach to "the end of the world" and the kind of plot that comes with it. I don't dislike it I just prefer original SMT kind of world.
Can confirm that the unique death animations look fucking sick on original hardware. I'm playing the game for the first time on a modded N3DS and it does SO MUCH to save what should be horrible battle sprites.
This feels like a max0r video with 50% less sensory overload, just what i needed! Seriously though, video is hilarious and wonderfully edited, would recommend.
I wasn't expecting this video to be so interesting. SMT IV is easily my favorite mainline entry, rivaling Nocturne. It's just phenomenal on so many levels, especially the music. The music makes, defines, and amplifies the atmosphere and setting presented. Which makes up for the lack of visual representation.
I saw your SMT 3 video when I was finishing up Nocturne and now I'm seeing this as I start 4, you're editing and humor are as good as the story and gameplay of the games you've covered
I came across a physical copy earlier this year and bought it since I've always been intrigued by the franchise and this video was the pushing point to get me to start playing it finally. Great job.
This video has phenomonal editing and I can really feel the passion you have for IV. Id also go monkee if IV got a remake since it needs to get off the gaybabyjail that is the 3ds. Ty for the laughs my guy
Got into SMT through this game by watching someone get their ass kicked. That shit flipped a switch in me and I've been getting SMT'd ever since. Fuck Strange Journey. That game hurts sooo good.
12:34 Oh boi am i glad i was able to secure a physical copy before Nintendo was Nintendone with 3DS games. I get to enjoy those animations at their fullest. Also, i had heard complains about "clashing demon art", but I always found that charming in a way. Gives some of them an otherworldly quality, like Chemtrail or that Claymation one.
The inclusion of those few exceptionally-out-there-looking demons, like the stop motion basket guy, really does sell the mishmash of styles imo. I understand that some people might prefer a more cohesive demon "design language" like nocturne had, but I assume for SMT4 to feasibly feature as big of a roster as it did, dipping into older art was going to be necessary.
@@foulenergy I used to be mixed on it, but after seeing how SMT5 basically used the same 80 or so extremely recognizable demon designs I've been really missing some of the 90s designs like the hairy meatball with fire horns and deer legs

What is it from. I want to cry some blood tears today
@@mirraisnow6050 _Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse._ It's like if ATLUS saw the success of _Persona_ and tried to make SMT more like it, tonally. It's still pretty dark, and you can still choose to fuck everything up, but there's a lot of "power of friendship" crap.
@@TheCoolerDrilis oof. Ive seen screenshots of it and skipped it on the grounds of it seeming like glorified fanservice dlc. Im surprised that the smirking flynn isnt a cursed meme edit
@@TheCoolerDrilis eh, SMTIVA wasn't that bad. the demons were cool and combat were definitely improved quite a bit, which is saying a lot since smtiv has a really robust gameplay mechanic. that's about all the praise i gave for the game, but i personally dont think the story's as bad as people say. it definitely is a cashgrab, but i feel like it gets too much hate sometimes
@@GervasiusMC not bad at all, just your regular smt fans gate keeping the series
Dude your editing is amazing! You're one of the few smt youtubers that are actually entertaining to watch. Keep it up!
So glad someone used HL2 Brane Scan OST
Such a great track
Your Nocturne video is what got me into the series. It's very validating to finally hear that you enjoyed IV as much as I did.
Wonderful editing as always!
Was listening to the SMT4 boss theme and your vid popped up in the recommended.
You editing and commentary style is really cool.
I swear to god. I may be up at 4.20 am, having a smoke, watching a random SMT video I got shoved on my recommended feed: But you are a fucking genius and this is one of the best videos I've watched all year. I don't know what's better: that you've summed up SMT4 to a T or the fucking editing. Peak Video ma man.
This is like the 6th time I've watched this now. Cannot get over the editing stiiiillll! Big ups from Scotland
How have I been watching this for a year hahaha
I was wheezing the whole way through, holy shit. God tier editing.
"Persona is about high school shenanigans" oh boy wait until he plays 2 and discovers the identity of the main villain
Bro these memes are ON POINT. Every 5 seconds a new meme and a very creative one at that. I'll be sharing this with a few friends.
What a funny style of editing. I've seen many video analysis for this game but this was the most dynamic
Amazing video as always, my favorite part had to be the one where jack frost gets launched into the upper stratosphere and lands in the security camera footage dimension.
Very much worth the wait.
It says a lot that I want more of this video after I watched it.
The surreal editing style really makes these videos great.

This edit killed me. If I ever try my hand at video editing, I know who to draw inspiration from x)
This was my gateway into SMT like a lot of people.
I'm loving the baseball gags; that's just a small part of your excellent coverage and editing.
Your videos are always a blast! Good stuff
always hyped as hell to hear anybody talk about my favorite series, and smtIV especially. banger video, i liked the part where you talked.
The editing makes this video a masterpiece
I hope your channel takes off. It appears to be, as I found this video from a recommendation. Good job.
As of nightly build 1986, the black box glitch is finally fixed.
THAT FUCKING EDITING! I LOVE IT! 4:20 monster squish moment. 10/10 vodeo. skibby dibby
your editing is amazing, its chaotic in the best way possible
This feels like a max0r video with 50% less sensory overload, just what i needed!
Seriously though, video is hilarious and wonderfully edited, would recommend.
Wow, I can't believe I only found this now. The humor and editing is superb
I don't know why but you look like someone who could review Etrian Odyssey.
Unleash your TRUE editing power!
Man this was such an entertaining review, great video
5:38 bro the way I SCREAMED
>There's a chance they'll become aggressively smug
LMFAO
amazing essay and amazing editing to compliment it. I can tell how much passion and effort was put into it and it is well worth it
your editing fucks so hard, I laughed multiple times at the visuals alone
the car comment at the end is foreshadowing for foul getting sent to isekai world
Holy shit this blew up ! Glad to see you get more eyes on your work, its really fantastic.
Your videos are very entertaining, and I appreciate them a lot.
thank you truly for the tastefully 2006 editing style
Yo, pleaseeee make more of these! I've watched this video over ten times by now and I just keep waiting for more! It's insanely good!!
I saw your SMT 3 video when I was finishing up Nocturne and now I'm seeing this as I start 4, you're editing and humor are as good as the story and gameplay of the games you've covered
This was the entry that pulled me into MegaTen.
I now can't stop playing.
Also my addiction to Pokemon kept me here.
Your edition and commentaries are insane, friend. And SMT IV my favourite of the series. Thanks for this vid.
Awesome video. The editing is genuinely so far above what's expected
Came here from your Nocturne video. Awesome scriptwriting, had me grinnin'. Glad you discovered this gem from way back when.
Got into SMT through this game by watching someone get their ass kicked. That shit flipped a switch in me and I've been getting SMT'd ever since.
Fuck Strange Journey. That game hurts sooo good.
Your editing style has to be one of one my favorites, awesome work :)
And those games are fucking expensive too. Pretty sure $50 is the norm for a 3DS SMT/Persona
great editing and i always love to hear people talk about smt iv so nice job dude!
