SMT: Nocturne is pokemon for insane people (good)

It's weird I somehow missed this game for so long, it ended up being the exact cross between the persona and pokemon game-feels that I was looking for; mixed with a uniquely liminal setting I really enjoyed. I'm definitely planing on trying out SMT 4, strange journey and apocalypse at some point now and hopefully SMT 5 further off.
Oh yeah, Dante is in this game I forgot to talk about that, it's the 2 design and he gets cool battle music, I pointed at the screen and shrieked like a howler monkey when I saw him.

So, I'm gonna explain a few things to help any newbies getting into this game for the first time (particularly regarding demon fusion and negotiation since those are the first big roadblocks most new players get stuck on)
*Fusion:*
So for starters, demon fusion has a few different factors that determine what you can fuse, how you can fuse, and what bonuses they gain. And most of it is based on the phase of Kagutsuchi (the big talking sun at the center of the Vortex World) is at when you enter the Cathedral. For example, sacrificial fusion can only be done during Full Kagutsuchi. And certain demons can only be created during certain phases. Furthermore, some demons can only be created through a sacrificial fusion using specific demons. Take Metatron for instance. For this guy, you need to fuse Michael, another Divine, and sacrifice a Tyrant, on top of defeating a certain boss before this formula is even available to you.
And if you have an item called a Deathstone, you can fuse the Fiends that previously kicked your ass six ways from Sunday (Red Capote is a lot more fun when you're not on the receiving end of it) with each Fiend having a different requirement for fusion. What I mean is that the Fiends don't have their own unique fusion formulas, but instead trying to create certain demons/races of demons with a Deathstone in your possession yields a Fiend instead. Now on to skills! Skills are learned randomly, and deselecting and reselecting the same fusion materials will make different skills get inherited. What this means is that you're gonna be pressing O and X a lot until you get the skills you want. Something to keep in mind is that certain demons have certain skill affinities, making some skills easier to inherit than others. So it's gonna be real hard to teach high level magic to a demon who's whole gimmick is "me hit things good." And if you want that Unga Bunga Me Smash demon to learn that magic because you want that spell on a magic demon that you can use Grog the Momonofu as material to get, all I can say is good luck and have patience.
Moving on to stats now. So, if your fusion materials are at a high enough level, you have the right Kagutsuchi phase, the demons you're fusing already have bonus stats, or some combination of the three, you can jack up the stats of the new demon you're making to frankly ridiculous levels. We're talking "level 10 demon with 40 in all stats" kinda busted here. Sacrificial fusion also gives bonus stats and levels btw. Aside from the initial stat boost, there's also a race of demons called Mitama. You get these guys by fusing 2 Elementals together, and they exist solely to buff your demons up. See, fusing a demon with these guys doesn't create new demons; they give stat buffs to that demon. So if you fuse let's say a Pixie with a Nigi Mitama (the blue one) then it gains more points in its magic stat. Red one (Ara Mitama) buffs strength, blue one buffs magic, yellow one (Saki Mitama) buffs vitality, and grey one (Kusi Mitama) buffs agility.
Also, some demons can evolve. This happens once they've learned every skill available to them, and your level matches or exceeds the level of their evolution. You'll know if a demon can evolve or not if you get the message "Signs of change can be seen on (demon)'s body" after they've learned a few of their skills. This isn't super relevant, as you'll usually be able to fuse the demon your demon evolves into a little down the line, but it's good to take note of if you have a demon that's starting to lag behind, but only has a skill or two left to learn.
*Negotiation:*
Oh boy, this system. This is either the easiest thing to understand and exploit, or it's an unintelligible mess of "WHAT?!" There is no in-between. So, here's just a short paragraph explaining the basics in order to get you into the former camp.
The first thing to know is that a lot of demons have answers they like depending on their alignment, or the specific demon. Knowing your mythology definitely helps as well, since a lot of demons at least loosely behave how they're depicted in their myths. Now, how to tell which demon is aligned with which Reason is as simple as "which places do I encounter them in?" Example: Yosuga demons prefer selfish responses, or ones that demonstrate power. Musubi demons prefer selfish answers that stroke the ol' ego and like it when you reaffirm their personal beliefs. Shijima demons like answers that reflect a way of thinking that focus on objectivity. Alternatively, there are demons that aren't aligned with any reason (Fairies, most Wilders, etc.) These guys are a complete coin toss (as are Yosuga's Brutes, simply because of how dumb they all are) And then some demons have questions and answers that pertain to them more than others. Two examples I came up with are Succubus and Badb Catha. Both are Yosuga demons, but they like answers that pertain to them more than ones that pertain to their reason. Flirting with and complimenting Succubus is almost a guaranteed success. Badb Catha is a Celtic goddess of war, so complimenting her strength works wonders on her.
Using these two as further examples, some demons ask certain questions more frequently. Both Succubus and Badb Catha ask the same question pretty often: (paraphrased) "Look at my skin. What do you think of it?" For Succubus, you answer "it looks soft", because obviously she wants to be complimented. Tell that to Badb Catha though, and she'll assume that you're calling her weak and get pissed off at you. Demons have different personalities, and playing into them increases your chances of getting what you want. Each race has a common personality type, with a few outliers, and figuring out how each personality type reacts to different answers is what's going to carry you through this game.
Of course none of this is 100% guaranteed to work and RNG will screw you over no matter what, but this comment should serve as a general guideline on how to increase your success rate.
And that's my "short", comprehensive guide to understanding demons in Nocturne. There's much more I could have gone into, like Magatama, and how curses affect what you can fuse, but I don't want this comment to scare even more people away with its sheer size. ...And if I have to type the word "demon" again, I'll probably commit Persona 3.

@@JulioCruz261 No problem, happy to help! ^_^ Tbh, it took me like 2 and a half playthroughs before I finally figured all this stuff out.
And sometimes, if you're EXTRA lucky with RNG, a Jack Frost will scoot across the floor at the beginning of the battle to ask you politely for a Life Stone. If you give one to him, he'll be so happy and grateful that he'll part with his most precious item: a Life Stone. Then he'll leave.

i love how any review of nocturne turns into the reviewer's psychotic philosophical ramblings at some point because nocturne just does that to you
Well when the game's story literally revolves around psychotic philosophical ramblings over who gets to create the new world, mixed in with a little Lucifer trying to get rich quick scheme, the game just becomes so deep it loops back around to being nonsensical. SMT is the logical extreme of human thought and what it entails about our species, using demons as a juxtaposition to really let it sink in how over the top we can really be.
That, or it's really just the raving fever dreams of a Japanese game development company named Atlus who just wants to bust the player's balls and give them the most surreal experience they can asspull. Probably both.

Expanding on that "fictional characters in a Vortex World-y" place recently the SMT gacha mobile game "Dx2 Liberation" recently had a crossover event with SONIC THE HEDGEHOG as an actual demon to use, and there's an ACTUAL PLOT TO IT. It's as ridiculous as it sounds but yeah it's a thing. Basically though some dude decided to hook up their demon summoning program to an old game cabinet and that somehow summoned Sonic.

Full kagatsuchi will also allow you to recruit demons you don't have the language for yet. You can use this to get a Petra in the initial hospital which will carry you for a while.
At one point I was going to mention the demons who can't understand you/ won't join you but I couldn't find a good place to include it.

Nothing will ever feel as good as getting my shit stomped by matador for hours and then coming back to that fight with a new bug and all new demons only to 2 turn him out of exisistance.
Or in my case, my first match against Matador being a 1 hour struggle of just me whittling him down with my tank build.
Fun fact: My first playthrough was on hardmode.
Hello Matador, have you met my friends? This is Hifumi, this is Nekomata, and this lovely lady is Ame-no-Uzume. I'm sure you'll get along SWELL.
That ending bit is godlike.
SMT always seemed cool, but a bit too imposing for my tiny lizard brain, but this video was really cool and motivated me to give it a shot! Love to see some more from you.
Thank you!
Just go into it ready to spend some time learning how things work and be prepared to die a couple of times. They're hard games and even when you start getting a hang of things you're pretty likely to die a few times to each boss in order to learn how they work and figure out what kind of a team you need to make to counter them.
If you are taking the dive just remember that these games are not difficult, they are essentially puzzles. If you take your time, strengthen demons against their weaknesses and make sure to buy all the different magatama you will have very little difficulty with the game.
Just a tip debuffs and buffs are very very important.

@@rpgfanatic9719 wasn’t even dissing the game. I’m just saying, a lot of the fandom doesn’t realize they are not the target demographic for that series.
Like Mfers complain the games are too easy, bro the game is literally designed to be potentially somebody’s gateway into video games. Of course it’s gunna be easy dude.
@@TheBrutalSax It's designed for all ages. The campaign is easy as hell with the AI using basic tactics, but that doesn't mean advanced tactical strategies can't be used, and the game...at least gen 6 and 7 have free multiplayer to encourage players to play with others using advanced strategical moves and passive abilities the game provides. I do agree that people are dumb for complaining about how easy the AI is. Do people complain about smash bros having dumb AI? No, because they play a lot among themselves too much not to care. I do not know why people do not feel the same with Pokemon, especially since it's one of the most multiplayer focused RPGs out there that isn't an MMO.
@@rpgfanatic9719 it’s designed for all ages yes, but the children are still the primary demographic. Nothing wrong with that, nothing wrong with being older and enjoying it. Older people are still encouraged to play it to some extent, and that’s why it’s not a baby game. But they are secondary to newcomers, mainly younger newcomers. That’s why they haven’t really tried to reinvent the wheel with that series like Nintendo is known for doing (or trying). Zelda is another series designed for all ages, but the primary demographic is the longtime fans, while still retaining the family friendliness, they’ve done stuff like going for stories that might be relatable to the older audience in some of the later entries. They feel like they don’t need to play it safe with that series.

Yeah Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse explains how all the demons are able to exist at once. Although people didn't like that since the game's story was written rather poorly for the most part.
On another note a Vortex World filled with famous people or fictional characters could be totally possible given how SMT II and Megami Tensei II feature bootleg demons of characters from popular horror films.
