13:30 this is why every time i play nocturne, i waste 2 hours before the matador fight going around Yoyogi park on auto battle while watching a movie on the other monitor... last time i left with 93 chakra drops & 62 revival beads
Playing with recruitment demons is still easier, than doing it solo AND on Cronicles. Also, magic can pierce in that version (not present on Steam version, but can be fixed with a mod), and Lucifer removes your buffs with Root of Evil and uses Diarahan, instead of Diarama, which makes the fight a lot harder and RNG based. Despite people saying, that the level doesn't matter in this game, it actually does, but counting per 10 levels at a time. Being level 255 will make you dodge all the attacks significantly more, while reducing the accuracy of the basic attack. Which is very important for the TDE-related bosses. While it also does decrease the strengh of magic, it doesn't do the same for Wind Cutter and Magma Axis (but it is a much weaker spell). It also boosts the physical attack damage considerably, but using Iron Claw and other lower accuracy moves will make you miss a lot without accuracy buffs and debuffs. Single hit moves are king, as damage reduction on multihit ones is way too big (around 50%).
This is absolutely insane that you are doing this challenge. The magatamas and fusion is something that is so incredibly important and to play through the game with no fusion or buying magatamas would be insanely difficult and greatly limit your options. Massive respect for this run. Awesome to see someone doing a challenge playthrough of one of my favorite RPG games ever.
I'm stopping to write this at minute 14 to say, I came here by accident, but already I'm loving this challenge run! A few years ago, I made my own playlist series (I wish I was good enough back then to just cut things down to a 1 hour video, but I wasn't as good back in the day, I went too much into detail about anything 😅), where I beat this game on hard without fusing demons. It was really fun! I look forward to continue watching this and see how doable it is with your added stipulation!
I knew you were gonna regret going full magic as soon as you hit Lucifer. Even with pierce, the damage calcs for magic in nocturne make it so that it isn’t a viable option for demifiend damage late game. Magic drops off hard near the end of mid game
Something small I noticed, you said Prominence is the 2nd strongest fire attack behind Magma Axis. That isn't actually true in a number of ways. To start, the magic damage formula is messed up in a number of ways, and it turns out that the math works out such that Prominence is actually stronger than Magma Axis (on average, with only 1 enemy present) until level 81 (at level 80 with 40 magic, fire boost magma axis averages about 676, while fire boost prominence averages about 683). But furthermore, neither of those are actually the strongest fire attack. That would be Surt's Ragnarok. Not only that, but measuring by average per turn icon, then from level 48 (before which it's fire boost prominence actually, not like that matters since Surt is level 74 and learns Ragnarok at level 78) until level 134 (after which its technically focus-boosted kamikaze) Fire Boost Ragnarok is actually the strongest attack in the game period. At level 80 (40 magic) it outdamages the next strongest attack (999 HP, Focus-boosted Dark Sword) by 23.7% (average 1120 per turn on Ragnarok vs average 905 per turn on Focus Dark Sword). Going even further. Surts regular attack uniquely happens to be fire (affected by fire boost too), and it turns out that level 76 onwards, if combined with both focus and bright/dark might, it actually outdamages both Prominence and Magma Axis. Not that Surt is at all relevant to this run, since he's fusion only to my knowledge, but I thought that was worth sharing regardless.
Yeah. When I first played Nocturne way way back,I never knew how BUSTED Surt was. Hell,I didn't know that Power Charge and Element Boost/Amp Skills were that great till I saw the damage they could do.
I also want to add that apparently if you level up too much, the magic damage scales down. I think it is cause the stat cap is 40 and the level of the user is used to scale damage but it then gradually goes down after a certain point.
@@ZX-Gearrobin and Zephyr proved mathematically that magic scaling caps at 28, and goes down significantly by 50-70 Edit: they have a series on the maths of most of nocturne
Great vid per usual, might I suggest a funny run that can be done in both SMTIV games? A Jack Bros. challenge; your human self-insert has to guard nonstop while the actual fighting is left to Pixie, Jack Frost, Pyro Jack, and Jack Ripper. No restrictions otherwise, it’d just be perfect for Halloween is all. I would’ve suggested it for Nocturne since there’s a Beelzebub superboss, appropriately, but no Jack Ripper in the demon lineup so EIP.
🎶This is the story all about how my build got flipped turned upside down So I’d like to take a moment just sit down viewer I’ll tell you how I became a god inside the devils’ demon crawling sewer 🎶
Nice, No Fusion Run is always the 30:22 best kind of SMT Challenge Runs Though i wonder, how likely it is to do an SMT Nocturne No Physical Damage Run. Or the opposite, SMT IV without using MP (or at least Magic Damage) and yes, Tetrakarn/Makarakarn/Repels/and Counters count in this.
50:22 .... WAIT THEY DID THAT????? why in the name of recordscratch did they not do that for the hd version? i would have loved running magic builds but because of how pierce works there i couldnt.
the hd version has mods now that are adding in magic pierce to. It doesnt go through natural repel if i recall tho but its been a vastly hot minute since i went back to check.
As of posting this comment, I have a magic playthrough in the works on Normal difficulty, though on the Steam version of this game. while it sure is a step-up in difficulty from running phys, the skill that I absolutely ADORE in the endgame was Wind Cutter. Wind Cutter Gaming, when you slap four Makakajas on and debuff your enemy's defense with Rakunda or Debilitate, can easily come out dealing 2,000 damage each hit. Now considering that, think about how much damage total it can do if four of your demons had Wind Cutter Gaming... but there are downsides. Leaving obvious ones aside (set-up, affinities), the Magatama YOU get it from is very late-game, and your physical damage suffers if you do decide to go like this. Some bosses can also shut it down in some way despite affinity, but you can pull your other demons out to get around the issues.
I have absolutely no knowledge of Raidou's games, but noticed he seems to use those tube things to summon his demons. Judging from the fact that he was simultaneously preparing fucking *eight* of them, we're definitely lucky Gouto intervened.
A note I want to make is that using your first Lv in Vitality makes the first encounters much easier. Seriusly, you can survive a crit + hit from the Petra and giving you an extra hit aggaist the Kodamas. You also have access to 3 medicines. Also, the Spirit there is a doctor, ask for his help, there are 0 random encounters there. A lot of people don't use these making the first fights unnecessaly brutal.
Great run mate. Got me in a mood to try this out albiet im still way to noob at the game so while id restrict myself on Magatama for an interesting challenge... im much to a nerd and would want my fusions. Mostly cause I only beat the HD remaster about 2 weeks after launch. And I had Dante in my run cause my friend wanted to see the Dante action.
What always bugged me (no I'm not making a pun, sorry) was, if the magatama is removed, he's just a normal human again right? His abilities and all are gone? Yes he's a DEMI-fiend, but it makes me look at his power as just temporary or contingent on something, not him becoming a new being.
You made it harder on yourself playing the chronicles edition on the Lucifer fight. The maniax edition Lucifer is a bit easier, as they removed his ability to cast diarahan.
…The beginning is HIGHLY suspicious. This is a different challenge run so things are not 1-1, but the script feels VERY similar to Nyarly’s no buffs run script in the beginning. You were binging other challenge runs while making this didn’t you?

Metatron won't use Fires of Sinai until phase two, so if you make him waste all his MP during phase one, you're golden. Also, you can change what you get in the lucky ticket box by taking more/different steps on the trip from the save room to the shop. Put a little zig in your step.
Yeah I thought about MP draining Metatron but I lost patience very quickly. As for the lucky tickets, I wish I knew that so it wasn’t as time consuming. I’ll remember that for next time.
