Hey, it's here! Anyways, as promised, here’s my patented NEET Kitten Prima Guide to Devil Survivor. Like my Nocturne tips and tricks, this'll be aimed at newcomers who have never played the game before or haven’t delved too deep into the game’s mechanics. Alright, first off: How should you build your character? Like all SMT games, your main character can have their stats fully customized, but your allies have a set growth that they follow. They might gain stats in a different order, but they always end up at the same spot every time at level 99. This means that you don’t hafta worry about them at all and can focus entirely on the MC. The answer to this depends on which version of the game you're playing, and which ending you're going for. If you're playing the original, magic is the way to go nine times out of ten. A strength build is completely viable and sometimes even better than magic depending on the encounter you’re fighting and what route you’re taking, but you get a lot more magic to play with and the physical characters you get fill their niche really well. In Overclocked though, you have more skills at your disposal, so it's up to personal preference and what your team needs more in a given fight. Oh, and minor spoiler, but the boss of Day 3 is a gimmick fight. The gimmick being that only the main character can damage it. Since the gimmick attack replaces your normal attack, most people assume that the damage scales off of strength, but it's actually tied to your level. So don't feel like you need to build your character a certain way in order to clear it. You could put all of your points into vitality and still deal good damage to this thing, provided you're not fighting it at, like, level 15. I mentioned this because that boss is a newbie trap that makes you think that you HAVE to focus strength, and I wanted to clear up that misconception. Next, you want to make sure that your teams are diverse. Don't put your eggs all in one basket. If you have a physical party member, give him magic demons to cover him, and vice versa. If you've made one of your leaders a healer, give them demons that hit hard to make up for their lack of damage output. Later in the game, you fight enemy teams with varied weaknesses, and a lot of them cover for each other. You should do the same: Give your party good coverage and never have 2 demons that are weak to the same thing on one team unless you want to get pounded into the dirt by a big angry fireball, or the enemies primarily use one type of attack that they both resist. You get EXP and money bonuses for wiping an enemy party in one round of combat, and those bonuses are small individually, but they add up fast once you stack them with the other bonuses you can get from things like not taking damage or hitting weaknesses. What this means is that you want to make your demon slaughtering as efficient as possible in order to maximize rewards, and you can't do that if one of your teams is struggling to end a fight quickly because the enemy resists their primary method of damage. Experiment with different team compositions. In this game, demons have what are called "racial skills" and they give effects either passively or when you activate them. These effects can make or break battles, so you should get as familiar with them as possible. You can make some frankly broken strategies if you learn how to synergize your party. To give an example, having a Beast and a Kishin on the same team lets you move to an enemy, attack, move again, then attack again. Or using a Wilder and a Vile turns you into a highly mobile glorified demonic artillery strike. There's a lot of possible combinations and strategies to make all of them viable, so try out everything you can. Use and abuse Free Battles whenever you can. These are, as the name implies, battles that have nothing to do with the story and only exist for the purposes of grinding. Now grinding isn't usually necessary in SMT games, as the thing kicking your ass is usually just a hole in your strategy. But here, a few extra levels can be the difference between a powerful new ally or a new skill and getting your limbs torn off by a pissed off snake thing. It doesn't matter how good your strategy is if the enemy completely overpowers you. Now, you don't have to match the level of whatever boss/enemy you're fighting, and in fact you can usually get by being a few levels lower than them. But as a general rule of thumb, you'll be at a comfy spot for the next major encounter after you've gotten every available skill from the free battle. Use the "search" function when fusing demons. On top of being convenient, it's a good way to learn which combinations of races make which other races. For the simplest example, fusing two demons of the same race will always make an Element, and fusing two Elements will always make a Mitama. The roster of demons will change from game to game, but the formulas are usually pretty consistent throughout the entire franchise. This game lays out everything for you plainly, so it's the easiest one to figure this stuff out in. It's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the different combinations to help yourself out if you try out another game. Bidding in the Devil Auction is always cheaper than buying the demons outright. Every other bidder in the auction has a threshold that they won't bid over, and that threshold is dependent on the price of the demon. That said, I haven't experimented enough to figure out each bidder's exact limit, but passing it will always result in a cheaper price than the "buy now" option. The trick to the Devil Auction is bidding really high and forcing someone to give up. Once one person gives up, the others won't be far behind, and there's no penalty for rapid-fire spamming bids, so just keep jumping up the price in smaller amounts after one guy drops out and you'll get the demon every time. Generally you can hike up the price by 50-70% in the first bid and someone will drop out. Then spamming 5-10% increases from there will get rid of the other two in just 2 or 3 bids and save you roughly 15-30% of the "buy now" price. These numbers aren't guaranteed, but the strategy is. Also, fun Easter egg: A lot of the bidders are named after characters from the Devil Summoner series. This knowledge doesn’t help you win the Devil Auction, but I thought it was a neat little tidbit. And here’s where I talk about the game’s optional superboss. This probably doesn’t belong in the “newbie’s guide” since you can’t even fight him until New Game+, but I’ve seen even series veterans struggle against him so I’ll throw in a couple of tips to help out. First, make sure everyone in your party has an agility stat of 27 or higher because you NEED to outspeed him. Next, make sure that every team has a healer and a Tyrant. Why a Tyrant? Their racial skill pushes the turn of whatever they fought back on the turn order. Basically, you never want to give him a turn if you can help it. He hits like a truck, has infinite range, and he has one attack that’s incredibly bullshit, so you want to give him as few openings to use it as possible. You CAN’T fight this guy fairly. Don’t even try, you’ll get your ass beat before you can say “wait did that say “-dyne”?!” You’ll also want Pierce for your physical guys and as much almighty magic as you can get your hands on for the magic users. In particular, Drain is gonna save your ass because of how long the fight can drag on and how many resources you’ll be spending. Oh, and for your Tyrants, having Race O/D on them is not necessary, but very helpful. What these skills do is increase the damage dealt to and reduce the damage taken from demons of the same race. Since the boss is a Tyrant, you can expect these skills to come in very handy. That said, they’re not an absolute must, you can make do without them. It’s like a difference of 3 or 4 skirmishes in the end, so don’t worry too much about putting Race O/D on every Tyrant you have just for that little bit of saved time. Now, this part is important for phase 3 specifically: Have electricity resistance, but DON’T use Elec Repel. Drain, Null, and Resist are what you want to bring in because he uses electricity and heals when hit by it. I don’t need to tell you why healing the superboss is a bad idea. Though if you DO want to reflect damage back at him, Phys Repel is the way to go. Have at least one party member that has it in order to give yourself a little bit more breathing room. Lastly, make sure everyone you take into the fight is at max level. It’s a bit of a slog to get to that point, admittedly, but it’s not as bad as you might think. See, the boss summons demon minions during the fight, and the game treats this as a free battle, meaning that you can retreat from it. The demons are between level 59 and 62 and they give good exp if you can wipe the entire group in one skirmish. Use this to your advantage and grind levels on his minions, then retreat once you feel like you’re in danger. Is this cheap? Yes. But so is giving the hardest enemy in the game a true damage nuke that gets 50% stronger every time it’s used. If the game wants to cheat, then cheat it right back. Hope this helps you enjoy the game. Good luck and enjoy your new life as a demon tamer! HaAaaAAAVvE a NiCe DaAy Also, great video! Loved your take on Devil Survivor!
"not a good introduction point to the series" then there's me who got into the entire franchise because of this one and because of this game got inspired to start playing every game on hard mode on first playthrough
Got finished watching a bit ago, kino video. Don't have much to say other than it's kinda understood that gaining extra turns is based off your agility stat apparently (I think also getting it stolen from you prevents you from getting another one, but I'm not sure). Oh yeah and the vtuber and "Persona meter" japes were pure gold. Also really liked all the eyeball movement going on too.
Devil Survivor is definitely the easiest to curbstomp though, save for a certain NG+ optional boss. My favorite method is to go 40 Vit with Repel Physical and cast Drain on everything until they're out of MP.
Atlus sure likes their ways to cheese games. Be it taking no damage at all like what you did or just straight up nuking every enemy with almighty skills and 40 points in magic
I seriously love how your review feels very comfortable and fun to watch just like how this game is to me. I love how this game is like a pocket apocalypse you experience and uses basic SMT elements into something very modern and relatable for the time. Also this game is kinda like a Digimon game if Digimon actually tries to end the real world at the start.
18:20 this bit was way funnier than I expected. And its true, show that kind of stuff to anyone who doesn't play SMT or even RPGs and it would sound like that.
I like how you made noaya's face a snake I showed him to my friends who'd never played it and they could tell immediately he was evil He's got the face that would make people say "Lock him up and find out what he did later"
I'm genuenly impress of how good the editing is. Everything is so fluid and when It isn't It fits with the joke or context. You are truly underrated. I guess is the course of making quality content taking a long time.
It’s finally here. i’m gonna cry, this is like the second coming of christ. Next up, elden ring, smt IV (or V), or something else! do whatever you want, but first take a break man! you deserve it!
When I clicked this video, I was not expecting to find a strong argument for “Vtubers are modern-day demons.” Frankly, I can’t help but agree, having seen what effect they have on their followers.
After 93 hours of playtime having done every ending and every boss, after rewatching this video for the fifth time, I finally understand the "don't get microwaved" part of the title, I feel as if I have ascended.
This is my favourite megaten games of all time. Good story, nice battle gimmick (idk what you call those strategy placement thingy), good voice acting, and actually a good law ending that I enjoy lol (I usually went for chaos or netral, or whatever gives human freedom of themselves). On the side note, being a software engineer myself, I kinda like when they're (mostly atsuro or naoya tho) talking about cracking, servers, code in general, etc.
Dilbert bit was insane but also totally fitting for you, also vtubers being demonic invaders is so funny fantastic work as always brilliant editing and writng
You are literally the most based man on RUclips holy shit. The esoteric knowledge connected to real life things combined with video games I play and autistic (yet very well done) editing is done nowhere else on the internet and I couldn't ask anything more of your vids. They're perfect constructs of art.
12:14 someone has probably pointed this out already, but the reason for not getting an extra turn in this instance is because of toubyou's racial trait chaos wave/ evil wave. One of it's drawbacks is the entire squad can't score extra turns.
Got recommended this randomly, and gotta say this is a really good video, funny jokes and edits all around. Subbed for sure, I've only managed to play this once, and it was the 3ds rerelease/remaster of overclocked, I did not make it through this game alone. I had a bunch of help from a guy who played it a lot, from demon fusion to figuring out the routes. It's been a long time, I think I'll try and play this again on my own, just to see how far I can make it without what's basically a walkthrough.
I've been waiting for this. I've been waiting so hard. EDIT: VID WAS FUCKIN GOOD, really like how the ending was done, and seeing the Dilbert 3 clip made me choke on my pepsi. i hope you're happy.
I actually found that having to spend time blindly was a positive, the game making you choose whose story do you want to progress, thus which endings you will get
Okay after watching, absolutely sublime editing, insanely well done. Also, INSANELY divine music choice. Q's theme from SF3? Into Sandy's City? Good stuff my man, keep it up!
Real talk, this video is a work of art and will be picked up by the algorithm in another 5. The bit at 8:05 with real Television broadcast hijacking history just fucking sent me. 10/10
Honestly don't like any of these games but still loved every second of this video cause your editing style is genuinely top of the pile. Cya in your next fever dream video much love
I greatly appreciate the use of Dilbert in this video. As for the game itself, what you said is accurate. The auction is a nice break from negotiations, and the menu system detracts from the game's setting. Good stuff.
Just found your channel via your SMT 4 vid and I was so into it that I didn't even notice that autoplay had played your SMT3 vid and now the Devil Survivor one. Love your style man!
I keep coming back to your vids man. You've truly got some unique talent and spark in this endless ocean of homogenous trash; my wife and I love your vids.. please keep it up.
Really well done! I think you're hitting most of the main strengh and weaknesses of the game on the head. Though I'd disagree about Devil Summoner being "hard". It's tame compared to some of the other mainline SMT games (looking at you SMT 1 and 2). I think Devil Survivor 2 is also harder. Though Devil Survivor 1 is mostly a stepping stone for 2. I found 2 much more complete than 1. Hope you're gonna look at it next! Keep up the great work man!
Also the story for this game is great, but what I like the most relative to other SMT games is the passing, it's way less grindy and has more short events to liven things aside from just the battles
It's in a weird position, where it's a spin off but not a sub-series (ie: devil summoner, majin tensei), so kinda just falls under a weird classification of non-numberd mainline
Sincerely i would have suggested you to try overclocked over the original, but still happy that you could experience one of my favourite games in the series
Nothing can beat the fact that Atlus has MT (original) SMT (spin off) then SMT IF (the game that made Persona) then Persona (spin off,) then Persona 3 (side universe to P1-2,) then spin offs to Persona 3-5. AND SMT has spin offs from their branch too! Spinoff cenption.
Megami Tensei is the starter, Shin Megami Tensei is the permanent reboot establishing itself as mainline, and all other series that don't identify as Shin Megami Tensei by default are spin-off series (SMT I, II, if…, NINE, III Nocturne, Strange Journey, Imagine, Liberation Dx2, IV (Apocalypse), & V = Mainline SMT; all else is either spin-off series or one-off) Well SMT if… didn't “make” Persona per se, all that was lifted was the high school setting and demons acting as personal enhancers All Persona games share a timeline, they just stopped making direct connections to other games in the mainline starting with 3 (1 & 2 Innocent Sin are one timeline that went to sh*t, and 2 Eternal Punishment is a new universe where Innocent Sin didn't “happen” while P1’s were retained but duplicated, then all Personos from then on go from Eternal Punishment) Sorry for my sudden 🤓ing out
Was really mixed on trying devil survivor since I thought the combat played more like fire emblem. This seems a lot more interesting than I had imagined, will give it a try. Thanks for opening my eyes big papa
I must say phenomenal video dude there was acouple things wrong you mentioned, but there was also things I never knew that you mentioned like I've beaten desu multiple times and the superboss and never knew that turn priority worked that way...
The game (and Devil Survivor 2) are easy IF you know what you are doing. There are a lot of easily cheeseable strategies and builds one can go for even in the early game, but they aren't all that obvious for newcomers to the game/franchise/genre. The 3DS games are slightly easier on top of that (as far as I remember) so it's perfectly doable to go through a Deathless New Game run. Of course, that is part of the appeal of the games: Figuring out strategies and builds yourself, cracking open the mechanics and then running over opponents that you struggled with before feels incredibly satisfying.
I have to beat Belial, that boss is reawakening that inner factor that's been locked away in me since my childhood. Which is being stuck on an actual boss battle that is going to require me to actually grind more and rearrange my team. Also I just picked up the first 3 volumes of the manga, I really love the art from this game.

HaAaaAAAVvE a NiCe DaAy
Also, great video! Loved your take on Devil Survivor!
👍🏽🌟✨
"not a good introduction point to the series" then there's me who got into the entire franchise because of this one and because of this game got inspired to start playing every game on hard mode on first playthrough
Got finished watching a bit ago, kino video. Don't have much to say other than it's kinda understood that gaining extra turns is based off your agility stat apparently (I think also getting it stolen from you prevents you from getting another one, but I'm not sure). Oh yeah and the vtuber and "Persona meter" japes were pure gold. Also really liked all the eyeball movement going on too.
Definitely agree 💯!
@@covids12345 Mac what the fuck are you doing here
Devil Survivor is definitely the easiest to curbstomp though, save for a certain NG+ optional boss. My favorite method is to go 40 Vit with Repel Physical and cast Drain on everything until they're out of MP.
I'm not very good at videogames...
@@foulenergy That's fine too. Enjoy Devil Survivor 2 if you play it.
Atlus sure likes their ways to cheese games. Be it taking no damage at all like what you did or just straight up nuking every enemy with almighty skills and 40 points in magic
I played full magic and It worked just as well
@@milfmacron Oh yeah, magic nuke builds are always effective and fun. Seeing those big numbers is it’s own reward.
BABE WAKE UP IT'S A NEW FOUL ENERGY
18:20 this bit was way funnier than I expected.
And its true, show that kind of stuff to anyone who doesn't play SMT or even RPGs and it would sound like that.
I like how you made noaya's face a snake
I showed him to my friends who'd never played it and they could tell immediately he was evil
He's got the face that would make people say "Lock him up and find out what he did later"
Ah. A Pippa watcher. A man of true culture.
this is the most unhinged editing ive seen. its amazing
Foul Energy posts a vid?
My excitement is immeasurable and my day is saved
This was great. Pretty good summary. I loved all the animations and "If ya know ya know" jokes.
Dilbert bit was insane but also totally fitting for you, also vtubers being demonic invaders is so funny fantastic work as always brilliant editing and writng
The IGN cruelty squad meter has filled, time for flipperbucks
Great now i want an SMT demon based on the Max Headroom incident
Its rare i rewatch videos yet alone 5+ times theres something hypnotically enjoyable about these ones after work. 10/10 would sub again
You are literally the most based man on RUclips holy shit. The esoteric knowledge connected to real life things combined with video games I play and autistic (yet very well done) editing is done nowhere else on the internet and I couldn't ask anything more of your vids. They're perfect constructs of art.
Your editing is top notch. The two Devil Survivors are the only strategy games i've beaten, my brain is too smooth for the genre
It's been a long time, I think I'll try and play this again on my own, just to see how far I can make it without what's basically a walkthrough.
>a cosplayer with an orc tooth
Godamnit, I can't unsee it now
Man is the track that starts from 8:20 a rocket slime or dragon quest 9 song, my brain is so warped
Rocket slime, but it may be used in both games, I have no idea.
I've been waiting for this. I've been waiting so hard. EDIT: VID WAS FUCKIN GOOD, really like how the ending was done, and seeing the Dilbert 3 clip made me choke on my pepsi. i hope you're happy.
Highest Quality Foul Energy viewer right here.
@@Sneedboy im a chemtrail cowboy
I just love your editing in your videos.
That Pikmin rant at the end was awesome. You're awesome, bro.
1:55 where is this from? it sounds really familiar (the dramatic guitar, not the frog music)
Gutsman megaman butt discovery
I'm so late to the party but I loved the video man, your edits are on point
The editing in this is absolutely stellar. Time to go diving in the old content
Very interesting and entertaining video! Kinda just stumbled upon this channel when looking up some Devil Survivor and I'm glad I did. Really cool!
11:15 , like the ss13 music Foul, hopefully we'll see a video on that soon
These videos are so consistently good man. Can't wait to see what you cover next.
i like this smt series reviews that you are doing, hope you keep on doing some more smt franchise! :)
INSANE EDIT WORK. God damn. Your vids feels so fluid and nice to watch
I had to hold back a laugh so hard at that «why is my cellphone getting warmer?» 😂
goofy fella plays my favorite series, very nice.
Holy Crap, Your editing SERIOUSLY rules
My favorite time of the month has finaly come, great vid like usual!
Yooooo the editing! Really good review of one of my fav smt games.
Good stuff.
I was not expecting to see Pippa in a video about a now decade old game
I like this
I love your editing style so much , good video
Just found your channel via your SMT 4 vid and I was so into it that I didn't even notice that autoplay had played your SMT3 vid and now the Devil Survivor one. Love your style man!
I keep coming back to your vids man. You've truly got some unique talent and spark in this endless ocean of homogenous trash; my wife and I love your vids.. please keep it up.
informative, entertaining and most of all funny, the ending is great, rock on
Really well done!
Your editing it's just like the bizarre dreams I have...
Impressive 👏🏻🗿
devil survivor is fun, holy dance go brrr
I feel amazing when I remember doing all the events necessary for everyone to make it out alive while I did the snake face route
Also the story for this game is great, but what I like the most relative to other SMT games is the passing, it's way less grindy and has more short events to liven things aside from just the battles
Fantastically executed and very original editing. You're fucking funny dude, subscribed.
Beyond amazing editing, as always.
Also adding this game to my list of SMT titles I will have beaten before or after acquiring alzheimer's
Demon divine or otherwise, we can all agree that ARLO is best girl
Dude I fucking lost it at ARLO.
You should try strange journey next, it's a side game that feels like a mainline entry
Strange Journey is mainline.
It's in a weird position, where it's a spin off but not a sub-series (ie: devil summoner, majin tensei), so kinda just falls under a weird classification of non-numberd mainline
Strange Journey was, actually, supposed to SMT4, but apparently it was odd enough to be made its own standalone game.
Just don't play the 3ds remake, it sucks and fucks up the story.
@@guysome7469 I agree, they didn't even remaster the soundtrack
Great video! Didn't make me laugh as much as the Nocturne one, but still worth the wait.
Editing in this video is so good
Sincerely i would have suggested you to try overclocked over the original, but still happy that you could experience one of my favourite games in the series
Why am i not surprised that foul knows about Pippa.
7:37 HOLY SHIT YOURE RIGHT!
I did not go into this expecting this to get ambushed by a fucking pipkin pippa clip.
great as always. great job bing boi
Megami Tensei is the starter, Shin Megami Tensei is the permanent reboot establishing itself as mainline, and all other series that don't identify as Shin Megami Tensei by default are spin-off series (SMT I, II, if…, NINE, III Nocturne, Strange Journey, Imagine, Liberation Dx2, IV (Apocalypse), & V = Mainline SMT; all else is either spin-off series or one-off)
Well SMT if… didn't “make” Persona per se, all that was lifted was the high school setting and demons acting as personal enhancers
All Persona games share a timeline, they just stopped making direct connections to other games in the mainline starting with 3 (1 & 2 Innocent Sin are one timeline that went to sh*t, and 2 Eternal Punishment is a new universe where Innocent Sin didn't “happen” while P1’s were retained but duplicated, then all Personos from then on go from Eternal Punishment)
Sorry for my sudden 🤓ing out
This is literally the hardest game I've ever beaten and I'm proud of myself.
Im near the end game rn and just used your Mitama guide. Thx!
Was really mixed on trying devil survivor since I thought the combat played more like fire emblem. This seems a lot more interesting than I had imagined, will give it a try. Thanks for opening my eyes big papa
Love this guy's editing and script writing. It's like Thorhighheels if he wasn't a troon.
Here before Maou Gura finds this video and Megidos you into oblivion for your insolence
Really amazing as always man.
I must say phenomenal video dude there was acouple things wrong you mentioned, but there was also things I never knew that you mentioned like I've beaten desu multiple times and the superboss and never knew that turn priority worked that way...
This is a pretty cool video i remember having this game when i was a kid but i lost the copy
man just yesterday i was thinking about how pokemon needs cool spinoffs like megaten im glad you brought that up 😁
Tokyo's closed due to DEMONS
The game (and Devil Survivor 2) are easy IF you know what you are doing. There are a lot of easily cheeseable strategies and builds one can go for even in the early game, but they aren't all that obvious for newcomers to the game/franchise/genre. The 3DS games are slightly easier on top of that (as far as I remember) so it's perfectly doable to go through a Deathless New Game run.
Of course, that is part of the appeal of the games: Figuring out strategies and builds yourself, cracking open the mechanics and then running over opponents that you struggled with before feels incredibly satisfying.
I didn't expected a devil survivor vid.
I started with this game.
Devil survivor > persona 5
Based.
Same here
You know, I can really see Arlo as a Chaos rep.
I thought you would say NFTs at that part, but you are also correct
On schedule
t-time is relative...
One of my favorites.
Great to see some devil survivor love! This game rocks!
Smt is the refuge for those who are heartbroken by Polemons fall from grace
